OCTOBER 2016 MONTHLY SUMMARY: ALL UNITS TOTAL SNARES RECOVERED & COLLECTED: TOTAL ARRESTS MADE: TOTAL WEAPON/EQUIPMENT CONFISCATIONS: TOTAL ILLEGAL STRUCTURES DESTROYED:
809 46 57 39
October was a busy month for the Anti-Poaching Units operating in the Tsavo Conservation Area. The continued drought saw a further increase in bushmeat poaching activities with an escalation in the numbers of snares found by the teams as well as a general increase in most illegal activities. Communities bordering the Parks and protected areas suffer during the droughts as they are unable to farm and their livestock, like the surrounding wildlife, perishes without enough vegetation and water. This drought stress causes community members to turn to illegal activities such as bush-meat snaring, charcoal burning, logging and encroachment to help create some income. In total the teams collected 809 snares with the Yatta team collecting 355 individual snares of which 115 were confiscated directly from poachers, which they apprehended. 46 arrests were made this month including 2 ivory poachers caught in the park with poisoned arrows and supplies and 8 bushmeat poachers who had bush-meat and snares in their possession. The remaining arrests involved livestock intrusion, charcoal burning, logging and grass harvesting. The Kenze team experienced high levels of illegal activities during October including the confiscation of over 60kgs of bushmeat from 2 captured bushmeat poachers and the collection of a high number of snares. 5 wildlife rescues were attended by the teams including 2 elephant rescues, a baby buffalo and a zebra. The teams also supported the Veterinary Units in treating three elephants during the month. Four elephant carcasses were also discovered and the ivory found was handed over to the KWS. The Ziwani, Tiva and Mobile Units were on reduced patrols for leave during October, whilst all other teams were operating full-time.

OCTOBER 2016 DSWT ANTI-POACHING DOG UNIT MONTHLY SUMMARY
The DSWT Dog Unit continues to support all anti-poaching operations in the TCA in partnership with the DSWT Aerial Unit and the DSWT and KWS Anti-Poaching Units. In its fourth month of operation the dogs are well settled and working well with their handlers attending any cases that arise needing tracking support. On one occasion the Yatta Unit followed fresh footprints of two suspects from the top of the Yatta Plateaux down to the Athi River. The Dog Unit was called upon to assist. The footprints were followed on the western side but the suspects managed to escape on a motorbike. The team did recover a snare and a knife as the suspects fled. Towards the end of the month the dogs were deployed between the Yatta and Athi River where a member of the community reported a suspicious person. The suspect could not be found but a followup was done with the dogs following scents for two more days in the area. The Dog Unit’s presence in the area most probably scared the perpetrator away, whilst any patrols the dogs undertake continue to act as a great deterrence.
