January saw continued rains across the greater Tsavo Conservation Area and beyond yet there was a noticeable increase in illegal activities compared to December. In total during the month the teams lifted 1269 snares including 31 rope snares, which are being seen more often in areas such as Kajiado and in the Rift Valley. The teams also made 54 arrests including 8 bushmeat poachers, 7 livestock herders, 9 loggers and 4 miraa harvester, 2 fishmen, 3 charcoal burners, 2 fishermen and 1 trespasser. The teams also confiscated 290 logged posts and recovered consignments of wood carvings, bushmeat and dikdik carcasses, 13 sacks of miraa and small consignments of sandalwood. During January the teams destroyed 24 charcoal kilns and 27 poachers’ camps along with 7 livestock bomas. 1 elephant carcass was also discovered during the month and its tusks were handed over to KWS for safekeeping. The teams also supported the SWT/KWS Vet Unit in treating 2 injured elephants. In January the Tiva and Kapangani teams were on annual leave whilst the Jipe, Kulalu, Mukururo, Bura, Kwale and Kichwa Tembo teams worked part of the month. The rest of the teams were operating fulltime.
