Zebra Snared Peppercorn Farm
The owners of Peppercorn Farm reported a male zebra foal with a snare around its neck.
Immobilisation, examination and treatment
The zebra foal was darted with 3 mg Etorphine and 60 mg Azaperone. Upon physical examination, it was observed that the foal’s neck had been bruised by the snare. The snare was removed then a fly repellent (Alamycin® Aerosal) was administered. Anaesthesia was then reversed with 75 mg Naltrexone given by IV & IM route to avoid re-narcotization. The zebra foal has a good prognosis.

Case 9 – 18th
2023
Case 10 – 20th March 2023
Elephant Post-mortem Kamnarok National Reserve
On 19th March 2023, the Kenya Wildlife Service – Kabarnet Station reported a sick adult female elephant. The Rift Valley Mobile Veterinary Unit clinically examined and treated the elephant on 20th March 2023, but unfortunately the elephant died during treatment. An autopsy was carried out after the elephant passed away to determine the cause of death.
Examination and treatment
The elephant was found recumbent, it has lost many of the key reflexes including trunk, ears, eyes and limbs movement. The elephant had a toe injury and an overgrown claw or growth on the left front leg which is a source of infection. Muscle degeneration and wasting was severe, and the animal was in poor body condition. There was also accumulation of fluid in the ventral abdomen(anasarca). The elephant was also severely dehydrated as the eyes were sunken. There was no response upon administration of emergency therapy including IV fluids, antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, and multivitamin. The elephant was comatose and breathing was shallow and irregular; mucous membranes were turning bluish and dry; and venous blood was dark in colour. The elephant had a poor prognosis and died while undergoing treatment.
Post-mortem findings
Gelatinization of body fat, including fat tissue in the muscles; increased fluid in ventral abdomen; gelatinization and reduced omental fat; gelatinization of coronary band fat; petechiae and paint brush haemorrhages on the surface of the heart; gelatinization of the fat covering the kidneys; pus in the uterus –Pyometra.
Cause of death
This elephant died due to multiple organ failure caused by malnutrition and uterine infection. Bacterial toxins were in circulation for prolonged period. The lameness was a disability that limited the elephant’s search for water and forage during this prevailing drought.
