Field of Vision

11th October - 8th November 2014 A multi-media exhibition exploring the subject of landscape through painting, ceramics, glass and silk. Peter Ceredig-Evans, David Ralph Simpson, Sarah Purvey, Gillies Jones & Penny Seume. Peter Ceredig-Evans, recent graduate from Bath Spa University, and David Ralph Simpson are two painters from the Westcountry, who have both developed their own distinctive semi-figurative approaches in their response to British landscape painting. Ceramics by Sarah Purvey use references to earth, horizons, clouds and sky within each piece. The use of different clays provides beautiful textures, tensions and sense of atmosphere. Drawing inspiration from the rural surroundings of the Yorkshire Moors, Gillies Jones, a husband and wife team, have created a beautiful range of bowls and vases in glass. These bold one-off pieces are hand-blown and then etched on a diamond lathe with designs examining patterns in the landscape. Textile designer Penny Seume has created a very unique range of silk scarves using designs from her own paintings of the local scenery of Bath. This exhibition provides great variety and interest, both in terms of each artist’s approach of interpretting their chosen subject of ‘landscape’, as well as through the different mediums that they work in.

Peter Ceredig-Evans Peter Ceredig-Evans graduated from Bath School of Art and Design in 2011 after growing up in Cornwall. Working in oils, Peter depicts subjects from rural landscapes, creating a sense of place with visual suggestions of memory that allow the audience to connect with the work on a personal level. His inspiration for these atmospheric, dream-like paintings comes from his time by the sea in Sennen, Cornwall. Peter describes “an overwhelming sense of isolation and space, which he relished, and it is these emotions that he reproduces in his work.
