Gabriele Koch After the Rain
Gabriele Koch After the Rain 3 - 27 November 2017 Concentrating on simple forms, acclaimed ceramicist Gabriele Koch successfully integrates balance and tension, stillness and movement, expansion and the containment of volume in her work. In some vessels she has incorporated texture to create a contrast between rough and burnished surface areas. The distinctive patterning which complements these burnished forms is achieved in a carefully organized secondary smoke firing. Koch completed her undergraduate degree in English and History at the University of Heidelberg before studying at Kings College, London then Camden Institute and attaining a Diploma in Ceramics at Goldsmiths College, London. In 1984 she won the Crafts Council London Individual Biennale Internationale de CÊramique d’Art Prize, Vallauris and has gone on to lecture on art and ceramics in the UK and overseas.

“Elemental. The dictionary says that means ‘of or pertaining to the four elements.’ And what are they? According to classical philosophy – earth, water, air and fire. Gabriele Koch’s lovely pots speak of all four of those elements as vividly as any I know.” Sir David Attenborough
