Dion Salvador Lloyd’s

paintings are music made visual; marks and colours are interwoven in rhythms and melodies, lifting and carrying you into them, making the hairs on your neck stand up. As you travel visually across their surface and explore the spaces they suggest, a poignant voice talks to you of places you have been, memory you half-recall, journeys you have made. The surfaces he creates are loaded with a tone of times past or lost, emotive worlds. These landscapes are not planned or site-specific but emerge out of a journey through paint, intuitive descriptions built by worked layers that reveal and conceal. They are atmospheres, energized and charged, they move and sway as the wind blows through them and takes our breath away. The confidence and energy of Dion Salvador Lloyd’s work seems to constantly develop and his studio currently thrives with a fluid practice and looser suggestions. Possibly driven by his decision to make more gestural and immediate works on paper, Lloyd has found an impetus and sense of freedom. The abstraction and improvisation of his recent works is a window onto his belief in paint as a living material; able to become both image and emotion. The canvases that will form the backbone of his show at David Simon Contemporary in Bath, are alive and kicking, structured so as to breathe in and out. They have been left unpinned, harnessing energy from their freedom, kinetic compositions and markmaking. They continue to explore gravity and the interplay of horizons and skies but they allow space and physical suggestions to float and freefall; treelines and rivers disappear if you look directly at them and imagined mountains seem to melt away. Lloyd’s signature style remains; his marks and palette are his handwriting, as they describe his decision-making and tell tales of his soul. All these elements are logical extensions of his previous paintings, building and retaining the unique qualities that define his work, but more excitingly, they start to sing about a future unbound.
