David Stephen Johnson (b. Pittsburg, 1949), abstract painter. Star quarterback, South Dakota State. Self-taught, 30 years, deliberately unpublished until now. A natural athleticism and grace led him toward the great action painters. He works very large on the ground en plein air and moves around the canvas with acrylic, house paint, oil, pastels and graphite, which are applied directly on the surface. He works and reworks the materials, sometimes doing eight or nine paintings underneath. He uses a scraper, paper and rarely, a brush.
