The marathon is one of the greatest tests of endurance and heart, in some ways quite literally. Over the distance of 42 kilometres, the average athlete’s heart can beat up to 43,000 times pushing up to 8000 litres of blood through your body against high pressures. With the appropriate training the heart handles this task exceptionally well. However ageing, onset of heart disease and environmental factors like heat, can sometimes result in overstraining the heart resulting in an increased risk of heart injury and a small but transient increase in the risk of sudden heart rhythm disorders.
In several instances, the heart shows some warning signs when being pushed too hard, many of which can be picked up by measuring the ECG and can be seen as skipped beats or changes in the ECG shape. Our study looks to assess the feasibility and ease of use of recording the continuous ECG, using the Frontier X2 wearable over the course of a marathon.
