The Literacy Promise Opening Doors for the Adolescent Learner CONFERENCE PRESENTERS Janet Allen

Janet Allen is an international consultant recognized for her literacy work with atrisk students. She is an author and has taught high school reading and English in northern Maine from 1972 until 1992 when she relocated to Florida to teach English and reading education courses at the University of Central Florida. During her tenure at UCF, she directed the Central Florida Writing Project and assisted in the creation of the Orange County Literacy Project. Dr. Allen has received several teaching awards including the Milken Foundation’s National Educator Award.

Donna Alvermann

Donna Alvermann is University of Georgia Appointed Distinguished Research Professor of Language and Literacy Education. She teaches courses in adolescent literacy and young people’s online literate practices. A former classroom teacher in Texas and New York, she has authored numerous books, chapters, and articles on researchbased literacy instruction for middle and high school students and worked on the 2009 NAEP Reading Framework.

Brod Bagert

Brod was born on November 22, 1947 and raised in the City of New Orleans, where he studied the classics in Latin and Greek, wrestled and boxed to vent adolescent angst, fell in love with and married his high-school sweetheart, practiced law, served in public office, and reared four children that are the joy of his life. Brod has written poetry his whole life. In 1992, Brod closed his twenty-one year law

practice and became a fulltime poet. Brod loves to entertain audiences with poetry. He tours some thirty weeks a year, and has visited Asia, Europe, South America, and just about every nitch and cranny of the good ole USA. He has written 15 books of poetry for children and adults.

Cathy Collins-Block

Cathy Collins Block, Ph.D., is a Professor of Education at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas. She is a member of the Board of Directors and/or Editorial Boards for the American Psychological Association, International Reading Association, and National Reading Conference. Cathy was the recipient of the prestigious Paul A. Witty Award for Meritorious Service from International Reading Association (1998), received the Texas Christian University Chancellor’s Award for Distinguished Research (2005), the highest award the University affords faculty, elected to the Board of Directors for the International Reading Association (2002-2005), and has been honored as one of the Outstanding People of the 20th Century, 2000 Outstanding Intellectuals of the 20th Century, Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers, and Who’s Who in the World.

Carrice Cummins

Carrice Cummins has served education for over thirty years as an early childhood director, elementary and secondary classroom teacher, administrator, staff developer, professor, and educational consultant. She received her doctorate from Louisiana State University in reading and is currently Associate Professor at Louisiana Tech

University where she teaches graduate courses in reading and early literacy and pursues various research interests. Her research and instructional strategies in the area of comprehension through retelling have helped teachers understand the importance of making retelling an integral part of the instructional program prior to using it as a form of assessment. Carrice is very active in professional organizations at the local, state, national, and international levels and just completed a three year term as a member of the Board of Directors of the International Reading Association.

Donna Ogle

Dr. Donna Ogle is a professor in the Reading and Language Department of the National-Louis University. Her primary areas of interest are reading strategies and the process of instructional change in schools. The K-W-L strategy that she developed is widely used across North America as a major component in expository reading and leaming. Dr. Ogle has many articles in journals including The Reading Teacher, The Journal of Reading Behavior, Educational Leadership, Phi Delta Kappa, and The Journal of Reading. She is co-author of the book Strategic Teaching and Learning: Cognitive Instruction in the Content Areas, and author of book chapters and video-tape programs. Dr. Ogle is active as a leader in professional associations. Ongoing involvement in public school programs is a central aspect of Dr. Ogle’s professional commitment.

Timothy Shanahan

Timothy Shanahan, professor of urban education at the University of Illinois at Chicago and director of the UIC Center for Literacy, is the current past-president of the International Reading Association. His other contributions to IRA include Board of Directors; Illinois Reading Council (IRC) Board of Directors; coeditor, IRC Journal; editorial boards of The Reading Teacher, Thinking Classroom, Reading Research Quarterly; chair of the assessment committee, and member of publications, government relations, and family literacy committees; coauthor of Informal Reading Assessment; volunteer, IRA-RWCT Program; recipient, Albert J. Harris Award; participant in National Language Arts Standards Project. Shanahan’s research focuses on the relationship of reading and writing, school improvement, the assessment of reading ability, and family literacy. He chaired the National Literacy Panel on Language and Minority Children and Youth and chairs the National Early Literacy Panel.

Shane Templeton

Shane Templeton is Foundation Professor of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Nevada, Reno, where he is also Program Coordinator of Literacy Studies. He is also a member of the Usage Panel of the American Heritage® Dictionary. Dr. Templeton’s research focuses on developmental word knowledge. Read his current research study, co-authored with John J. Pikulski, entitled Building the Foundations of Literacy: The Importance of Vocabulary and Spelling Development.

David Warlick

David Warlick, a 30 year educator, has been a classroom teacher, district administrator, and staff consultant with the North Carolina State Department of Public Instruction. For the past ten years, Mr. Warlick has operated The Landmark Project, a consulting, and innovations firm in Raleigh, North Carolina. His web site, Landmarks for Schools, serves more than a half-million visits a day with some of the most popular teacher tools available on the Net. David is also the author of three books on instructional technology and 21st century literacy, and has spoken to audiences throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe, Asia, and South America.

Patricia Wolfe

Pat Wolfe is a former teacher of Kindergarten through 12th grade, county office administrator, and adjunct university professor. Her major area of expertise is the application of brain research to educational practice. Dr. Wolfe maintains that while many current educational practices fit well with the research, others run counter to what we are learning and pose significant challenges to those who work in schools. She is an author of the awardwinning book, Brain Matters: Translating Research to Classroom Practice and coauthor of Building the Reading Brain. She has appeared on numerous videotape series, satellite broadcasts, radio shows, and television programs. Dr. Wolfe is a native of Missouri. She completed her undergraduate work in Oklahoma and her postgraduate studies in California.
