Landscape Architecture Portfolio David Ross
Personal Statement There are two things that draw me to the field of landscape architecture. One, is the creative aspect. I am a creative person. I like working with my hands. I enjoy the process of picturing ideas in my head, getting them down on paper, and seeing where they move to next. The other is knowing that everything we do as landscape architects goes towards creating a better place. I usually avoid trying to sound too corny, but it’s true! Whether it’s a garden, a street, or a city. Whether it be environmental, functional, aesthetic, or all three combined. Our ideas form what the world is today and fuel what our world will become tomorrow. I’d like to be a part of that. I am only a few steps from the starting line, which excites me. There is so much more to come. This is a field where there are always things to learn and always more to discover. I realize the plethora of opportunities that lie ahead and I couldn’t be more excited to see where they lead me.

Cultural Landscape Design Lawrence, MA The intent of this studio project was to elaborate on our previous Greenway Planning studio (see next project), specif ically to develop a selected part of our Legacy Greenway Plan, with a focus on the idea of cultural landscapes. My partner and I chose to create a new cultural center for the city of Lawrence and fashion a new take on the post-industrial park. The goal was not to create an escape from the city, but within the city, unveiling to the people of Lawrence a new type of landscape that doesn’t currently exist in their neighborhood. This project taught me the importance of cultural landscapes and has played a large part in constructing my personal design style. Due to the combination of the site, my teammate, my instructor and the final product, this project proved to be one of my favorite undertakings during my undergraduate career. Team Credit: Julia Sim

Greenway Planning Lawrence, MA The Legacy Greenway Plan is the product of a six week studio project with the goal of developing a greenway system connecting various assets within the city of Lawrence, Massachusetts and throughout the city’s greater regional context. Our team’s vision was to create a multi-purpose greenway for the people of Lawrence that will provide longterm benef its to the future generations of the city. The greenway aims to contribute to preserve natural landscapes, encourage physical activity, provide recreational benefits, promote alternative transportation as well as draw visitors and tourists from the surrounding areas. The product is a timeless process that will endure for generations. This project greatly increased my conf idence and understanding of working on larger scale projects in addition to teaching me the importance of the community’s involvement. Three-Phase Plan The Legacy Greenway in Lawrence will be an on-going process constructed and expanded over generations of people in Lawrence. To aid this project we are proposing a three phase implementation plan.
Phase 1 will focus on developing important aspects of the greenway’s backbone as well as completing simple improvements, such installing additional bus stops and mapping out a historic trail in the city.
Phase 2 aims to conquer the more difficult tasks that require more time and capital, like re-purposing the North Canal and completing the Spicket River Greenway.
Phase 3 is a period that will not have a completion date. This phase will be passed on from generation-to-generation. It includes programs that create awareness for health, the environment, and community, while also adding to the constructed foundation of the Legacy Greenway.

Forest Park Neighborhood, MA My goal in this project was to create a space that would aid in the revival of the local Bing Arts Center. This was fashioned by restructuring the neighboring gas station into an inviting space for local residents to gather while also creating an outdoor exhibition space. The idea behind the design was to create a playful and artistic landscape that would attract passers by and become synonymous with the arts movement in the Forest Park neighborhood.

This residential site design studio posed the challenge of creating a housing development on a site with signif icant grade change. The project required a select amount of units as well as on-site parking. The biggest task was working with the intricate topography on site. A ridge runs through the middle of the site providing a portion of relatively f lat land we found ideal for development as well as providing a platform for stunning views of the surrounding area.

This experience is shaped by a system of visual portals throughout the city that engage and connect viewers to specif ic historic landmarks. The concept behind these glass portals is the level of interaction users will experience and introducing a new way to view the historic sites of Boston. The dome-like form of the glass portals stand as a recognizable beacon throughout the city that people will grow to identify with while also absorbing the attention of visitors.

Physical models continue to be one of my favorite ways of demonstrating a design. As important and practical as today’s computer programs are, I plan to keep in touch with the more literal and hands-on method of representing design.

The client requested a small-scale affordable planting design for an inactive planting bed situated at the front of the house. To keep in style with the rest of the garden I designed a simple woodland themed planting bed, using hardy native plants, expanding the size of the bed to allow space for the requested river birch in addition to creating a stronger edge for the house in a lawn-dominated garden.
While searching for opportunities in the field of Landscape Architecture this fall, I learned that the town of Lexington was looking into re-vamping a narrow pedestrian walkway in the town center. I saw an opportunity and decided to play around with a design for the walkway. I chose to focus on the strong artistic presence in the town, implementing wall art and plantings to soften the tall, narrow space. Seating allows passers-through to pause and engage with the art before continuing on their journey.
