Core Studio 01:

Dynamic Terrain

Design Criteria: Create a park space with the use of a repeating module as the interactive elements. Solution: Morphing triangulated elements from the landscape and creating arched and inhabitable spaces between the structures of the repeating module unfolding.

Core Studio 02:

Research Facility

Design Criteria: Design a research facility in the Mississippian swamp landscape that responds to a natural phenomenon. Solution: Basket like pavilions that float in the flooded swamp landscape, bridging the dry and wet elements of the nature preserve to incorporate external research labs.

Finland Studio:

Finnish/America Center Design Criteria: The Finnish/America Center to encompass both nations’ values and represent their relationship with a library, classrooms and Fulbright Scholar living quarters in Helsinki, Finland. Solution: Providing vibrant color and warmth to the harsh and low lit winters of Nordic city through light sailing walls, while the building face can provide a blank canvas for summer activities such as movie and art projection.

Vertical Studio 02:

Kansas City Airport

Design Criteria: Allow for a minimum of a 60-gate terminal and the ever-growing expectations of the frustrated traveler and TSA agents who heard them. Solution: A building gesture connecting the landscape and act of flight as a way to greet and bid farewell to the over 12 million yearly passengers. A single level change will move people up as they depart the land to take off or move others down as they arrive to their awaiting city.

Vertical Studio 03:

Grinnell, IA Theatre

Design Criteria: Understanding the small town feel of Grinnell, Iowa, with it’s Louis Sullivan “Jewel Box” Bank and Grinnell College, design a three venue theater for the community. Solution: The undulating landscape of fields of wind blown corn drives the form of sweeping veils of the roof structure allowing for slivers of sun light penetration and interior performance expression.

Thesis Studio:

Current Project | Working

Geology Museum

Design Criteria: Final studio semester thesis with program and site chosen by the student. Solution: A geology museum that highlights both natural and human induced erosion of the landscape. Site located on a narrow strip of land overlooking the limestone bluffs of the Mississippi river and deep canyon like mark of a limestone quarry. A series of pavilions house the geology displays while bridges guide you to understand the eroded landscape.





Spring 2011 | Built | Seat: 9 Single Sheets Birch Plywood, Glue Legs: Welded and Bent Steel, Screws

Furniture Design:

Bent Plywood + Steel

Design Criteria: Use elements from four precedent Finnish bent plywood chairs as aid for own, built, full scale design. Solution: A low back chair with an embracing seat. Side slits alleviate breaking of the wood over the double curves of the two elements coming together.
