PRACTICE PEOPLE EXPERTISE AWARDS ACADEMIA MEDIA PROJECTS
Davis + Davis Architects is a partnership between husband and wife team Matt and Sally Davis. Based in Adelaide, South Australia, the practice was established in 2007 after many years of travelling, living, and working together in Australia, United Kingdom, Europe and North America. The practice brings together our distinct skills and is centred on a shared passion for beautiful, well-considered architecture, and an ongoing optimism in architecture’s ability to enrich the lives of its users and society. The potential of the practice was realised in the first project undertaken, the Ningaloo Reef Eco-Resort, which received second place and the people’s choice award in the Architectural Review Propositions design competition in 2007. We recognise that architecture is inevitably with us for a long time and if its going to be built, it should be worthy of the long ride. After honing our skills in a number of high calibre design practices, Davis + Davis provides the opportunity for us to produce architecture with clients that are willing to be surprised and delighted. MATT DAVIS Director
SALLY DAVIS Director
Graduating with a Bachelor of Architecture degree with first class honours from the University of Adelaide in 1998, Matt received several student awards including the Kenneth and Hazel Milne Travelling Scholarship in Architecture, which facilitated graduate study at Columbia University, New York, in 2000.
Sally received a Bachelor of Architecture with first-class honours from the University of South Australia in 1994. Working with a number of practices in Adelaide, she developed expertise and a portfolio of completed projects in areas of residential, educational, urban design, and heritage architecture.
Working with Flightpath Architects in Adelaide, Matt developed expertise in residential, education, and heritage projects, before moving to the highly respected practice Allies and Morrison in London. This shift brought a new focus of finely crafted commercial architecture, an area subsequently developed with Bates Smart in Sydney where Matt was Associate Director up to 2006. Matt played a key role in the conceptual design and strategic direction of commercial, institutional, high-density residential and master-planning projects undertaken by the practice and was design leader on a range of competition and award winning projects.
Following an extensive study tour of contemporary European architecture, Sally moved to London and completed a range of high-density housing and boutique commercial projects with Harper Mackay and Johnson Naylor. Returning to Sydney, Sally developed strong design leadership and project management skills working on major commercial, public, and multi-residential developments with Woods Bagot before finding her niche with Alexander Tzannes Associates, focussing on exquisitely conceived and executed houses.
In 2006 Matt returned to Adelaide to establish Davis + Davis and commence as Lecturer in Architectural Design at UniSA.
Sally was a member of the Salisbury Urban Design Advisory Panel from 1997-2000 and maintains a strong interest of the role of architecture in the development of our cities.

Regardless of any formal intentions to collaborate, there is an inevitable cross polination of ideas between the two entities. This brings a strong research or enquiry based approach to the design work of the practice, allowing ongoing investigations of broad concerns in addition to the resolution of specific projects. The success of this relationship is evident in projects such as the Ningaloo Eco-Resort which received second place in the AR Propositions national design competition. This project built directly on Matt’s studio teaching where students were asked to design tourism infrastructure for the thermal springs located in remote South Australia. Matt teaches primarily in areas of design and construction, with a strong emphasis on the emotional and experiental potential of architecture, materiality and detailing, and the role of architecture in the city.
