Kylene Beers, author of When Kids Can’t Read/ What Teachers Can Do (Heinemann, 2002) and Robert E. Probst, author of Response and Analysis, 3rd edition (Heinemann, 2004) are respected authorities on reading instruction. Kylene— focusing more on reading skills—and Bob —focusing more on engagement and literary analysis—work together to show teachers and administrators how skills, engagement, and literary analysis work together.

Explorations Beneath the Surface: Strategies for Reading Deeper This session contains a variety of strategies for assisting students with unlocking Type to enter text deeper meanings in texts through strategic reading and writing activities as they craft critical responses to texts. K. Reading in No Time This session is an interactive presentation introducing Cive "no‐time" strategies that require little or no preparation or extra class time. These strategies draw on 21st century skills to enhance students’ reading comprehension while reinforcing content objectives.
L. Zooming in on Organization in Writing This session is designed to assist teachers in identifying practical strategies to help students organize their writing. The strategies presented are applicable to various writing genres. Portions of the session will examine student work and equip teachers with ideas they can implement on Monday morning! M. Strategic Teaching: The Framework for Effective Implementation of Literacy Strategies Teachers will learn best practices to effectively implement literacy strategies. These instructional practices can be used in content area classes to increase comprehension of various texts. Teachers will enable students with strategies to become independent life‐ long learners. N. The Gossip Café: Where Literacy Skills Are Acquired and Writing Is Inspired! The Gossip Café is a twisted version of Harvey Daniel’s literature circle phenomenon. It allows students to “gossip” about various literary or content area text with their peers, while enhancing their reading and writing skills. Practical content area literacy strategies are implemented to activate prior knowledge, monitor comprehension, generate questions, and ultimately evoke higher order thinking.

Transform learning using the power of the web and the imagination of teachers and students. B1. My 4th Grade Teacher Changed My Life In this presentation, you will learn how to coach, cajole, and inspire your students to write all kinds of stories. B2. Catching Stories in Monroeville: Finding the Narrative NonCiction Voice This session will focus on research and how the interview process through storytelling established the groundwork to write the biography of Harper. C. Special Effects in Reading Learn to use digital special effects such as green‐screen technology to make it seem as though your students were really there. Find out about creating your own audio books complete with sound effects and different voices. Discuss and sample various digital storytelling websites that will motivate readers and authors at any level. D. Reluctant Reader, Not Me : Strategic Lesson Plans using A.R.I. Strategies Learn techniques to increase comprehension and higher order thinking for reluctant learners. SpeciCic strategies discussed will include text coding, magnet summaries, vocabulary webs, margin notes, and anticipation guides. E. Refresh: Adolescents Critically Examining Culture Using Voicethread Our session will illustrate how we developed the culture projects and collaborated across county lines. It will focus on how we used tech tools to plan and execute the projects in our classrooms. SpeciCically, the tech tools that will be shared are wikis and voicethreads. F. Using Primary Documents to Promote Literacy Teachers will classify primary & secondary sources, analyze primary documents, and recognize the importance of primary documents in social science. G. Writing for Tests: The Other Genre This session will provide proven strategic lessons and assessments for scoring well on the ADAW in all modes. H. Student‐Relevant Literacies This session will examine everything from leet to media design and social networking to the latest web technologies. This will be useful for teaching visual rhetoric and for technology integration. I. PODCAST and Education: Is There a Connection Introducing podcast into the classroom.
