WOODS CROSS — In front of microphones and bright lights, judges and an audience of hundreds, 151 Davis County students stood to compete in the annual Davis Clipper Spelling Bee Tuesday.
Some were nervous, some relished the audience. Some recited slowly and thoughtfully, some fast and confidently. “Convivial, c-o-n-v-i-v-i-al, convivial,” came one response. And then, in the fractions of a second that followed each word’s spelling, the student and the audience
waited for either the,“That is correct,” from announcer Robert Rohwer, or the dreaded bell that signaled a wrong answer. At the end of the evening, after three rounds, 29 students had qualified to continue to a final round on March 23. The winner of that round will represent Davis County
in Washington, D.C. Besides the all-expenses paid trip sponsored by the Clipper for the student and a guardian, the winner will receive a Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, three one-year subscriptions to Encyclopedia Britannica Online donated by Encyclo-

WOODS CROSS — Woods Cross City and Silver Eagle refinery officials have finished an agreement, nearly a year in the making, designed to ensure the safety of residents and refinery employees. The agreement should be signed within the next couple of weeks. The agreement, unveiled at Tuesday’s city council meeting, will be reviewed quarterly, according to Woods Cross City manager Gary Uresk. It is the result of a process undertaken following the Nov. 4, 2009 explosion, which damaged up to 100 homes. That explosion came after several other incidents at the refinery over the past several years. Uresk said the agreement will outline any incidents which happen at the refinery quarterly from the most minor to catastrophic on a tiered system with tier one incidents being the most major, involving injuries and possible fatalities.Tier two would be a less significant event, while tier three events would be minor situations such as safety valves going off. n See “WX” p. Man critically injured in auto accident
FARMINGTON — A man is in critical condition following an auto accident on Thursday afternoon. Police say the 62-year-old man was exiting southbound I-15 onto Park Lane when his car was broadsided by a westbound SUV around 4:30 p.m. Police are continuing the investigation, because it appears one of the drivers ran a red light, but there were no witnesses and neither driver was certain who ran the light, Farmington Police Chief Wayne Hansen said. The injured man was flown to Intermountain Medical Center in critical condition. The driver of the SUV, a man in his early-to mid-20s, was not injured.

City taking donations for museum
CENTERVILLE — City officials are still welcoming donations to help get the Whitaker Museum open so that guests can go through it once again. The museum, which has been closed for more than a year now for repairs and renovations, will take more than $70,000 to open again. That figure comes from a recent intense evaluation by city staff and local experts in areas from plumbing to HVAC, done with the goal of making the building safe and sturdy enough to once again be open for tours. Donations to the project are currently being accepted at the Centerville City offices. Checks must be written out to Centerville City in order to be able to be legally accepted by the city (who are the owners of the museum building). Those who want to be more specific can write “Whitaker Museum Fund” on the designation line on the bottom of the check. Those who are interested may also call museum board chairman Paul Thomas Smith at 801-292-8003 to
make other arrangements or receive more information on the project. The remodeling process, which started in 2009, is also intended as a restoration to bring the building back to the state it was in when it was last owned by a member of the Whitaker family.

Kaysville husband ranks in ‘hottest’ magazine contest BY LOUISE R. SHAW Clipper Staff Writer KAYSVILLE — It’s not just looks that won her husband a spot as one of 25 of “America’s Hottest Husbands,” according to Christy Wasuita. “It’s what kind of a guy he is,” she said of her husband, Clint. Men who have depth and personality, who really care about their wives and families, are those who made the list, she said. Wasuita first read about the contest sponsored by Redbook Magazine when she picked up her first issue a year ago. As she read about the men who were nominated, she knew her husband was worthy of a spot in the rankings as well and nominated him for this year’s contest. In her nominating essay, she said it was the little things that “show what a catch he is.” She told of how when she leaves early for her work as a sonographer (ultrasound technician), he will get up and make her hot chocolate. When the roads are bad, he’ll drive her to work. Her husband, who is in medical sales focusing on pediatric nutrition products, has driven 40 minutes to visit her at the hospital when she has to work late, and prepared an “on-call bag” for the times she’d be called out suddenly. The Kaysville couple met at church and were married in October 2009. They are expecting their first child in mid-June.

“The thing I admire the most about Clint is his talent for listening,” she said. “When I’m talking, he has the ability to make me feel like I’m the most important person in the world.” The winner of the contest will be determined by votes from readers. Those interested in voting can visit www.redbookmag.com/hothusbands. The results will be announced in June, and the winner will receive an eight-day trip to Mexico. lshaw@davisclipper.com
Boulder is gone, but questions still remain for many Clipper March 6, 2011
News A3
BY JENNIFFER WARDELL Clipper Staff Writer BOUNTIFUL — Though the approximately 2,000 pound boulder has likely been removed from the garage wall it crashed into on Bountiful’s east side early last week, the question of who is responsible for making sure no more come down the mountain is still very much in the air. According to Bountiful Police Chief Tom Ross, the boulder that smashed through Bountiful resident Tim Fisher’s wall Tuesday night came from the unincorporated area of Davis County where parcels are owned mostly by several private parties. Though both the city and Davis County worked to put measures in place about a year or so ago that would make the area safer, the private property owners outside of the city lines didn’t cooperate, officials said. “We really tried to push some changes, but the private property owners did not feel the same way,” said Ross.“It kind of ended at that point.” For Fisher, however, the matter is only beginning. Crews were expected to

break up and remove the boulder over the weekend, but he’s reluctant to make repairs to the wall until he can be certain it won’t happen again. “I’m not willing to drop $50,000 to fix my home when I’m at the end of a bowling alley,” he said. “There’s still a pile of rocks up there that aren’t mine.” Bountiful City Police still
aren’t certain what caused the boulder to come down the mountainside in the first place.Though the recent moisture that has caused instability on North Salt Lake hillsides may have been a source, Ross said that it also might have been due to something as simple as vandalism. “We haven’t had this specific problem in as long as
we can remember,” he said. The earlier push for safety measures by the city and county came when an ATV rolled down the mountainside. According to Fisher, however, it may be more accurate to say the police hadn’t previously been told about this specific problem. He said that a neighbor visited him Thursday and said
a boulder crashed through into the living room of what is now Fisher’s home nine years ago. Fisher said that he bought the home six months ago from the bank, and that it had been empty for the previous five years. Though Ross said the city and county had even gone so far as to acquire barriers that would go up on the hillside, they only had a limited amount of authority since the private property owners are in the unincorporated area. “We felt like we had put
as much pressure on them as we could,” he said. For Fisher, however, that’s not enough of an answer. He plans to see if he can locate permits for repairs made to the living room to establish a history of boulders coming down the hillside, and use it to push for some barriers to be put up. “I’m glad my neighbor told me,” he said.“What if my kids get hurt next time?” jwardell@davisclipper.com
WX plans April open house for proposed police merger BY MELINDA WILLIAMS Clipper Staff Writer WOODS CROSS — City officials here are planning an open house in April to discuss the proposed police merger between Woods Cross and North Salt Lake, and get feedback on options being considered. The city council discussed the merger Tuesday during its regular council
meeting, but took no action. The merger has been under discussion for some time, and at this time is focusing on a merger of the two cities, although West Bountiful has been included in some recent discussions. Woods Cross City manager Gary Uresk said the city has looked at four options — maintaining the status quo; the city hiring a new chief to replace retiring
Chief Paul Howard, and one additional officer; contracting with the Davis County Sheriff’s Department for services; or consolidating Woods Cross and North Salt Lake. Should the merger move ahead, Uresk said the joint department would work under the framework of an interlocal entity under the administration of both city’s manager.
Uresk said that while the Sheriff’s Department has estimated they could provide police service for a half million dollars less than the city current budgets, council members have heard from several residents who don’t want the city’s identity taken away. He said that before a date for the public hearing is set, he must do more research on the overall cost.
He said that if the council decides to move forward with the merger, such details as ensuring equitable benefits for officers of both departments are worked out.“So far we’ve operated on the assumption there would be no increase in cost, but we haven’t actually built the budget,” Uresk said. Other factors to be considered include the loss of
identity and whether the merger would create a better department. The city’s police officers expressed support for the merger at a meeting held in January. They told city officials they believe such a merger would create more opportunities for a variety of assignments and for advancement. mwilliams@davisclipper.com
NSL starts grant process for those caught in landslide BY JENNIFFER WARDELL Clipper Staff Writer NORTH SALT LAKE — Help may be coming for the people caught in North Salt Lake’s Springhill landslide, but it’s going to take awhile. The North Salt Lake City Council recently approved starting the city’s application process for FEMA pre-mitigation disaster funds to help residents whose homes are being damaged and destroyed by the Springhill landslide. This will start the cost-benefit analysis needed for the application, which will then be put together and sent in after the analysis is complete. “It’s still probably going to be about a year,” said North Salt Lake Mayor Len Arave. FEMA’s Pre-Disaster Mitigation program provides funds to states, governments, and other groups for hazard mitigation planning and the implementation of
ONE OF THE NSL HOMES condemned due to landslide-related damage. NSL is working to get FEMA funds to help. Photo by Jen Wardell mitigation projects prior to a disaster event. Though the slide is already moving and damaging homes in North Salt Lake, city officials will base the grant off of the landslide
speeding up enough to quickly collapse homes and/or sending them suddenly tumbling down the hillside. “It’s probably the one grant we’re eligible for there,” said Arave.
Homeland Security will be fronting the money for the costbenefit analysis, which will determine whether the measures required for helping homeowners and making the area as safe as possible will cost less than the benefit that will be received. They have also promised North Salt Lake that, when it’s time, they will help the city with the application process. “It’s not something we’re really familiar with,” said Arave. The landslide area, which is 40 feet deep in some places according to a 1997 geologic report commissioned by the city, has fixed boundaries that cover about 12-15 homes. The cause is the clay located beneath the gravel and foundation, which becomes highly unstable when wet. Drought, however, meant that the land moved only a little more than an inch until 2005, and for the next several years moved anywhere from four to nine inches a
year depending on the area. Recent weather patterns, however, have caused the landslide to significantly pick up speed.According to the Utah Geologic Survey, the land at the top of the landslide stretched a full seven inches from December 2010 to Jan. 20 of this year, which is only an inch and a half less than the stretching the landslide did over the entire previous year. The slide has already required the demolition of some of the area homes, including one in February. A few other homes in the neighborhood are condemned and collapsing, but the banks that own them have not yet chosen to demolish. Though North Salt Lake has no legal liability for the homes, city officials have said they will continue looking for things they can do. “It’s hard to figure out ways to help these people and fix the situation,” said Arave.“I wish I knew exactly what to do.”
Kaysville City sends UDOT message on West Davis Corridor alignment A4 News Clipper March 6, 2011
BY LOUISE R. SHAW Clipper Staff Writer
KAYSVILLE — The Kaysville City Council unanimously passed a resolution Tuesday that sent a message to Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT), requesting in polite but determined language that they reconsider the alignments recently proposed for the West Davis Corridor. Calling on the need to protect “human habitat” and allow “the greatest opportunity for human flourishing,” and reminding them of the research done in the 2001 Corridor study, the council strongly suggested a route farther west than current proposals. Since UDOT announced its three best options in early February, there have been multiple protests. Kaysville especially is impacted by all three options, with 25 homes at risk of being removed. “Kaysville City has fully supported providing a transportation facility
through Davis County by incorporating the 2001 Corridor into master plans,” said the resolution, referring to a study done by the Wasatch Front Regional Council 10 years ago that outlined a proposed path for the route. “Kaysville City acted in good faith, following the 2001 Corridor and identifying it as our growth boundary,” read the resolution. “Residential development east of the power lines would never have been allowed if there was any indication the 2001 Corridor would not be followed.” “The original study had a lot to do with our planning,” said Ron Stephens, city council member. “For them to step in and interfere with that...” The resolution, which was titled:“Supporting the West Davis Corridor Project and Environmental Impact Statement Process,” stated that the city supports the process and the principles involved and agrees that a new four-lane freeway will be needed.
Further, it specifically states its support for an interchange at 200 North Street. But, city leaders said through the resolution that the city “strongly favors and fully supports the corridor alignment that begins at Legacy Parkway south of Glovers Lane, follows the Farmington Western Alignment to Shepard Lane and follows the 2001 Corridor (which is west of the power lines) to Gentile Street.” That would allow the new freeway to “truly be an alternative to Interstate 15. It will not use I-15 and can remain functional in the event of an emergency or when I-15 is closed to traffic or has restricted function,” it stated. Finally, city leaders stated that the corridor they propose would cause “the least loss of human habitat, while protecting the integrity of our community, and environment, and [providing] the greatest opportunity for human flourishing.” lshaw@davisclipper.com

WX latest city to give OK to Legacy Trail agreement BY MELINDA WILLIAMS Clipper Staff Writer WOODS CROSS — Woods Cross City became the latest city to sign the Legacy Trail maintenance agreement Tuesday night, joining Farmington and Centerville. North Salt Lake,West Bountiful and Davis County have still not signed the agreement which places responsibility for maintenance of the 13-mile trail system on the shoulders of each city and the county for the unincorporated county. Woods Cross City manager Gary Uresk said council members were concerned about the cost of the upkeep for the city’s portion of the trail, but after analyzing it, Uresk explained to council members that much of the trail that appears to be in Woods Cross is actually unincorporated county. “There’s not a lot in our jurisdiction,” he said. Uresk said the area which is now unincorporated county will eventually be annexed into the city, but not until there is more development along the western portion of 500 South. “In the short term, we don’t have a lot of responsibility,” he said. The city will also be responsible for maintaining the trailhead at 2425 South.
The maintenance issue has been a thorn in the side of the five cities and the county. The jurisdictions all believed the trail, which runs adjacent to the Legacy Parkway would be maintained by the Utah Department of Transportation, but transportation officials came to the local jurisdictions after the road was opened, telling them it was their responsibility to maintain the parkway after the first year. Uresk and UDOT officials have described the problem with who should take care of the maintenance as a case of miscommunications. “I don’t believe it was intentional,” Uresk said last summer.
“I think UDOT was more focused on getting it (the parkway) built and didn’t even think about the maintenance issues.” Again last summer, Uresk said the maintenance has to be done, regardless of who does it, because of the expense of having put in the system. “Regardless of who pays to maintain it, I believe the residents want to make sure the improvements don’t deteriorate,” Uresk said. Currently, each city is doing its own cleanup of litter on and near the trail. Those using the Legacy Trail, however, worry it will deteriorate if the maintenance issue is not settled soon. mwilliams@davisclipper.com

FCC director knows first-hand of clients’ needs BY MELINDA WILLIAMS Clipper Staff Writer
WEST BOUNTIFUL — When Gene Lopez helps those coming to the Family Connection Center, he has a very real understanding of what they need and why they need it. He’s been in their shoes. Lopez, director of the Community Action Program at the Family Connection Center in Layton, shared his own story with members of the Bountiful Breakfast Exchange Club Thursday morning, as he gave an overview of how budget cuts will affect his agency. Lopez worked in the state youth corrections system for 17 years, a position he’s proud of, and which has left him with a passion for helping young people. But while employed there, he had a mental breakdown. He told Exchangites he and his family lived off savings, but funds ran out, and he wound up having to ask the food bank for help. “I drove by (the food bank) six times before I went in because of pride,” Lopez said. He filled out the necessary forms, then the former director asked him some questions about his situation and his education, made a call and turned to Lopez and said,“Do you want to work for us?” Now he heads the third largest community action program in the state, working at “eradicating poverty, one person at a time.” He told the club members that he understands, and supports, the need for a balanced budget, but “unfortunately it’s a sign of the times,” that while budgets for safety nets are cut, the need is still growing. Lopez said that while many still view those asking
GENE LOPEZ, director of the Community Action Program at the Family Connection Center, spoke to the Bountiful Breakfast Exchange Club recently. Photo by Melinda Williams for help as on welfare or lazy, the FCC has found that 38 percent of those coming to the agency for help hold college degrees. He said when two parttime positions came open recently, they had 40 applicants, 28 with college degrees. Lopez told club members that in the past, the bulk of the agency’s clients were female, heads of household.Today, there are more two-parent families. “They could be your neighbors, your friends.” He said the agency’s Community Service Block Grant has been cut by 50 percent and that means that a full third of their total budget “has gone away.” Lopez said that a community assessment made in 2009 showed the greatest need was for employment
support, an area the FCC now emphasizes, helping the unemployed to gain the skills they need to find employment. He said they found they need to teach especially young people, how to dress for a job interview, and even such things as not putting email addresses such as “freaky@yahoo.com” on their resumes. In 2010, six case workers within the program helped 76 families. Thirty-seven of those families found employment and three found jobs which provided a living wage. Lopez said families who work with the case workers are in the program for three months, and then there is follow-up. Through the FCC’s food pantries, in 2010 the center helps 900 families a month.
They’ve also provided hotel vouchers for 212 nights and helped 70 families find permanent housing.“In Davis County, chronic homelessness is not as vivid as it is elsewhere,” but it exists, Lopez said. He views his current job “as showing Washington why they should keep the grants in Davis County.” He said staff members are frustrated and tired, but are dedicated. To a question, Lopez told club members that what the center needs most is committed volunteers wiling to help out for six months or more. He also said they are in need of personal hygiene items such as toilet paper and detergent, in addition to food drives. mwilliams@davisclipper.com
LAYTON — A state strike force has dismantled a high-tech fake identification mill and arrested three alleged illegal immigrants operating in Layton. Victor Zarco-Hernandez, 22, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on suspicion of violating two third-degree felony counts of possession of a dangerous weapon by a dangerous person, five third-degree felony counts of forgery, five, third-degree felony counts of possession of a forged writing and one second-degree count of racketeering. Caesar Hernandez Barajas, 36, and Juan Ramon Garcia Negrete, 20, were arrested Wednesday night in Provo in connection with the Layton operation. Both were booked into Utah County Jail on forgery
charges. Members of the Utah Attorney General’s SECURE Strike Force conducted the arrest on Wednesday, seizing computers, printers, laminating machine, cutters and highquality blank printing stock. They also confiscated Mexican consular identification cards, drivers licenses from Utah and other states, Social Security cards and electrician licenses. “This is the first time we have ever seen fake documents needed for professional employment,” said SECURE Strike Force Commander Rhett McQuiston. “We found incredibly realistic-looking identification documents. We have also never seen anyone creating false identification cards from so many states and federal government agencies.” Agents say Zarco-Her-
nandez used runners to deliver fake IDs in Salt Lake, Davis and Utah counties and may have been operating in other counties as well. The suspect has been apprehended four different times attempting to illegally enter the United States. He was arrested in downtown Salt Lake City while other agents were executing the search warrant at his Layton home. Agents also seized two handguns and new professional grade high speed CD/DVD replication equipment typically used to pirate music CDs and new motion picture DVDs. During the process, the Strike Force was assisted by agents from the ICE Enforcement & Removal Operations Division and detectives from the Layton Police Department. The SECURE Strike Force was launched in June
2009 to target major crimes by undocumented aliens. mwilliams@davisclipper.com

CLEARFIELD — Even as demand is up, there are more crews working to install those double-pane windows or upgrade furnaces. Tri-County Weatherization, is a Davis County Health Department program that serves Davis, Morgan and Weber Counties. Low and moderate-income households, both homeowners and renters, can potentially receive everything from a new furnace to better insulation. And although 450 households in the three counties are on a waiting list, more people are being served, says program manager Ian Spangenberg. “It’s almost double right now what we were doing before the (federal) funding increase,” he said in terms of people being helped. About 103 Davis County households were assisted last year. Where there used to be three work crews to serve the entire area, now there is “a whole mix of crews, including specialized heating and air conditioning and a window and door crew being set up, along with an insulation crew. “We’ll still be able to serve more people. It’s just our waiting list grows,” Spangenberg said. “Right now (wait time) is between 18 and 24 months – but that’s based on priority, he emphasized. “If there is someone who has no income and is disabled, they might get more points than someone else and might get theirs done before others,” Spangenberg said. Income guidelines for those eligible to participate have recently been modified. Currently, the income of those who take part can be at 150 percent of poverty level.
For example, for a family of four, an income of $2,794 a month or $33,259 a year is allowed. Furnaces are a big part of the program’s workload. Recently a contract was signed with Questar Gas with funds coming from that utility’s thermal-wise program. It provides funds to replace furnaces that are at 60 percent efficiency or less. That contract provides nearly $149,000 and, while not a large sum, can replace dozens of furnaces, Spangenberg said. Before a household can be considered, an audit must be conducted of the home. Efficiency and age of the furnace must be evaluated. Also checked are needs for tune-ups or repairs of any major appliances, the water heater, or even a gas stove if there is high carbon monoxide levels or settings. “The mix between replacing that older furnace with a new one, to save them money,” is a consideration, along with tracking heat exchangers, proper venting. “Where it creates a health and safety issue with incomplete combustion,” that means action must be taken, Spangenberg said. “We also focus a lot on insulation, make sure the interior, floors, walls, attack are insulated,” as well as checking duct work, he said. Double pane windows will be installed in some cases, as well. Whatever measures are taken, those people receiving the help are grateful, Spangenberg said. “Our work is well received. The problem is when people have to sit on the waiting list” for a long time, he continued. Not so worried about being ‘cool’ anymore The views expressed in this column are the opinion of the writer and not necessarily those of the ownership or management of this newspaper.
friend celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary last week in a lavish country club event. Most of those attending were of his approximate age, men and women in their late 60s to mid 70s, all of whom had shed their youth in the Sputnik years. One of the celebrant’s daughters approached me. “I didn’t recognize some of these people,” she said. “Some have held their age well, but some of them…..” “I understand,” I said. “But one thing they By Bryan Gray have in common: they don’t need to worry about being ‘cool’. They can just be themselves.” We all remember about being “cool”. Every generation has a different definition. And in every generation, most of us were utter failures. USA Today columnist Craig Wilson recently recalled that the “cool” kids in 1960 were set apart by their belt buckles. The “cool” teens did not position the buckle in the front but “rakishly slid three or four inches over to the side.” That’s how Elvis wore his belt buckle, and it sent a naughty “devil-maycare” vibe to one’s classmates. (Especially the girls – important since, as Waylon Jennings noted in his landmark song ladies love outlaws!) I can’t remember anything strategic about belt buckle positioning. In my high school, the traditional students loved the Beach Boys while the left-of-center “cool kids” fancied the Rolling Stones. The Wil-
A
son brothers were safe and dreamy, but Mick Jagger carried the bad boy image. Senior citizens don’t have to worry about the coolness factor. They might worry about the price of Polident, but they don’t care if the sweater they pull over their heads is from Abercrombie or something they picked up on the T.J. Maxx clearance rack. In their teens, some of them probably thought it was “cool” to light up a Marlboro in the high school parking lot.Today, they recognize that emphysema is the polar opposite of being “cool.” I’m not sure what it takes to be “cool” today. One college student told me his idea of “cool” was bringing a 12 oz. Starbucks into his first class of the day. Considering the prices Starbucks charges, the cost of being “cool” on a daily basis is pretty high! Some 10-15 years ago, sporting a tattoo might have been “cool.” Today, tattoos are too. I’ve noticed a few young men sporting Mohawk haircuts, but a Mohawk is too freakish to really be “cool.” It also depends on the school. As some schools, being in the drama club or the band is “cool” while athletics is the ticket at other schools. The definition of “cool” may change, but “coolness” also remains constant. Remember that Barbie found Ken irrelevant at the beginning of this century, but thanks to Toy Story 3 Ken has regained his “cool” footing. As we advance in age, being “cool” loses its thrill. If we still want to be a “bad boy”, we simply have to convince our wife that we really do need to own a Harley. That might be “cool”, but no one will be calling us “hot” again.

Layton mayor nearly unwitting foreclosure victim BY TOM BUSSELBERG Clipper News Editor LAYTON — Steve Curtis had never missed a mortgage payment on his Layton home. But the mayor of Davis County’s largest city nearly had his family’s home sold from under him. The first inkling he had that such a possibility could materialize was when a notice was posted on his door in October of 2009.A foreclosure sale was due to be held on the steps of the county courthouse the following January. “The largest banks, especially Bank of America who I’ve affiliated my mortgage with, they’re doing a lot of lawlessness and fraud,” he said. “My wife (RaeLynn) and I sought a little relief,” he told the Clipper.“We had been out of full-time employment for nine months. We had talked to
LAYTON MAYOR STEVE CURTIS, speaking at a city event. Although current on his mortgage payments, he was nearly victim of foreclosure. Photo by Louise R. Shaw our creditors about a possibility of modifying payments that were owed. “Other than Bank of America, they said they wouldn’t work with us because our payments were
up to date,” Curtis said. “That makes sense. You have to be behind to get relief,” he said.“BofA was different. They said they have this new program (TARP, federal Trouble
Asset Relief Program). They said it looks like you can qualify for a trail payment, reduce payments some $300 a month. “That helped us immensely. It all looked above board,” he said. “There was no reason why we shouldn’t trust the mortgage company. All my adult life I had been current on every payment for a home. There didn’t seem to be a problem.” For 10 months, there were discussions back and forth with the bank, Curtis said.“They (bank) said once that’s (modification) processed, that’s what your loan payment would be. I said,‘you’re putting us on this trail plan. “Does this mean when you get to a decision, should we not qualify, do we have to pay the difference we would’ve paid originally? They said,‘No, that’s not necessary.’ Just go back to the original payment.”
It was in October of 2009 that the family received notification foreclosure proceedings were starting. “That totally astounded us. We had done exactly what the bank told us to do,” Curtis said.“My wife had kept very meticulous records. We have that to fall back on.” They contacted the bank and were told the foreclosure proceedings were “just a normal process. You’re up to date on your modified payments. You don’t have to worry until you don’t make payments. If payments falter, there is the possibility of foreclosure,” the bank reportedly told Curtis. “We were gullable,” he admitted.“The week before Christmas, there was the notice on our doors that the house would be foreclosed Jan. 18, 2011.That was very hard and difficult” to take, he said. “There was no reason for it.We had done exactly
what the bank had asked. We made our payments on time. Everything was done according to the rules,” Curtis said, adding, “There was bait and switch that whole 10 months. “One arm of the bank was doing one thing, the other arm another,” he said, noting they’d call the bank at least weekly, sometimes twice a week.“Each time we’d get a different service rep who had a different answer. “The saddest thing in the whole scenario is, it isn’t just the Steve Curtis family. It’s thousands upon thousands of people throughout the whole country who they’re doing this to,” he said. “My neighborhood matters,” he added, noting it’s better for everyone if a home can be maintained, their inhabitants remain there – rather than being forced out by foreclosure . tbusselberg@davisclipper.com
Seminar on saving your home from foreclosure set for March 12 BY TOM BUSSELBERG Clipper News Editor SALT LAKE CITY — “Saving My Home” is the theme of a seminar set for Saturday, March 12, 10:30 a.m. to noon at AAA Fair Credit Foundation offices, 230 W. 200 S., Suite 3104, Salt Lake City.To register, call 1800-351-4195. Director of Counseling Services Will VanderToolen, a West Bountiful resident, said the number of homeowners seeking help from the nonprofit foundation is increasing – with Utah ranked fifth in foreclosures nationwide. “Things are really rough right now. There are a lot of households that need assistance, many having difficulty, even those who went through a rough patch and are back to work. They’re still having problems,” he said.“They become so past due on credit debt and other loans, that even if they’re back to work, they don’t know how they are going to dig out of the hole. “We meet to provide a comprehensive plan for all of their debts, personal loans, mortgage debt, using different counselors” who are experts in each area, he said.
“The first step individuals need to take when facing foreclosure is contact a HUD-certified housing agency – we’re able to do that. “These families are trying to discover their options and learn a whole industry while they’re trying to take care of their finances,” VanderToolen said. “It’s not that uncommon,” he said of Layton Mayor Steve Curtis’s experience (see above story).“People find themselves trying to navigate without a background in foreclosure prevention. “It can be very confusing. It’s very in-depth. Our counselors know who to talk to to help homeowners receive results,” all at no charge, he emphasized.“There are many cases where one department (at a financial institution) is not talking to other departments. It’s very common for homeowners to get multiple answers depending on who they talk to.That’s another reason they should have assistance from a HUD-certified agency. “Even if you’re in the middle of a modification, that doesn’t prevent the foreclosure from moving forward,” he emphasized.“One
department might have the final say, and restrict the house going forward as a (foreclosure) sale, but the collection department will continue with collection activities. None of that process will actually stop. Your collection department will try to get things caught back up, post a notice on the door, etc. “Ultimately, if we work with specific departments, there are times we can postpone (action) until a satisfactory conclusion is met with the loan. It works both for homeowners and the servers,” he said. “Some homeowners understand if the numbers just don’t make sense, there’s still a chance they will lose the home,” VanderToolen said.“The modification program isn’t going to fix every single scenario. If the numbers don’t make sense, the mortgage server will continue with (proceedings). Sometimes we have the task to inform the homeowner there doesn’t appear there server is willing to modify.” That said, he noted that “mortgage rates are great right now. If someone still has good credit, and they haven’t fallen behind, they might want to consider refi-
nancing, might be able to get a lower payment,” such as through a federal home finance modification. How-
ever, anyone buying a home after January 2009 may not have that same option, he said.

WX, Silver Eagle draw up safety agreement Continued from p. A1
Under the agreement, Silver Eagle would also pay for a yearly audit to review the refinery’s safety score card, Uresk said. In return, the city would advise Silver Eagle of any development planned in the area of the refinery and solicit input from refinery officials on ways to ensure the development’s safety. “It’s a very good agreement,” Uresk said.“They voluntarily entered into it. It’s a great step in the right direction.” Uresk said that safety issues surrounding any industry can be compared to a block of Swiss cheese.
Equipment is bound to break down, and humans do make mistakes,“but if all the holes line up and bad things get out (of the business), it affects the community,” Uresk said.“The concept is in any industry, if the holes don’t line up, it doesn’t get out.” He explained the agreement ensures the refinery is doing things they need to, such as training employees, and equipment inspections, under a system of leading and lighting indicators. Leading indicators monitor the positive things an industry does to ensure safety, while lighting indicators show things which need
attention. Uresk said the November 2009 explosion, a fire in a tank in January 2009 and a furnace explosion years before were all lighting indictors which should have signalled something was wrong at the refinery. Uresk said Silver Eagle has repaired and replaced much of the equipment since the 2009 explosion and has better trained employees in the past two years. “(The agreement) has been a very good move on Silver Eagle’s behalf,” Uresk said.“It makes us as a city much more comfortable.” mwilliams@davisclipper.com

The group’s purpose also is “to assemble a group of able-bodied students if he needs our help.” That assistance could come in many ways, from staffing phone banks to canvassing and more, he said. Hess had the chance to meet the potential presiden-
tial candidate and his wife, Ann, at the State Capitol a couple of weeks ago. He says he’s behind Romney all the way. “For me, it’s all about someone who will get the economy on track. He knows financing and the economy,” Hess said.“He is a family man, a strong supporter of the traditional family.” It doesn’t bother him that Romney once supported gay marriage, for example.“He has changed his opinion. I don’t agree with gay marriage, but if a state wants it at the state level – it’s a states’ rights issue. “He just looks like a president,” Hess said.“He’s kind of a role model.” Romney came in second out of a long list of potential
presidential candidates at the recent Conservative Political Action Conference. That event is where the Romney student organization was officially unveiled. In his spare time, Hess said he enjoys traveling, people and culture. The former LDS missionary served in Brazil, where he learned Portuguese, and he learned German while living there. “I would love to end up in government: state, federal or international politics,” he said. “I just love to get involved in anything that I can.The decisions being made today are going to affect me. CLEARFIELD — Clouds of black smoke could be seen through much of north Davis and south Weber counties as fire crews from several agencies fought a fire that began in a biofuels business here late Friday morning. As of press time, about 50 firefighters from six agencies — North Davis Fire District, Syracuse, Sunset, Layton, Clinton and Roy — had responded to the three-alarm blaze, and the number “was growing by the minute,” according to North Davis Fire District Capt. Chris Tremea. The blaze started just
after 11:30 a.m. in the business, Clear Sky Biofuels Inc., 395 W. 200 South, but then spread to an adjacent auto shop.Tremea said there were reports of minor injuries. He expected crews would be on the scene throughout the evening and into the night monitoring hot spots. The company processes alternative fuels for various uses.Tremea said district firefighters are very familiar with the business, having conducted inspections there. Tremea said the district will put out any needed public health notifications. mwilliams@davisclipper.com

Embracing art, onstage and off BY JENNIFFER WARDELL Clipper Staff Writer CENTERVILLE — At the Davis Center for the Performing Arts (DCPA), you don’t have to wait to get onstage to experience Davis County's artistic talent. There’s still a week to experience the Bountiful/Davis Art Center’s “Celebration” invitational exhibit, currently on display in the lobby of the DCPA during the run of CenterPoint Legacy Theatre’s “Hairspray” (both shows end March 12).The exhibit, featuring 22 well-known Utah artists, is an inaugural effort by the DCPA to collaborate with other local arts groups and open its doors to all kinds of arts. “We were very happy with how it turned out,” said BDAC Executive Director Emma Dugal.“The whole thing came off beautifully.” The collaboration came as a request from the group in charge of the DCPA, who have said from the beginning that they want the performing arts center to be a home for as many of the local arts as possible. Well-known Bountiful artist Sandra Rast helped to organize the exhibit, which also includes other local stalwarts such as Diane Turner, Scott Durrant,

Local students shine in Springville show BY JENNIFFER WARDELL Clipper Staff Writer DAVIS COUNTY — Even when they’ve got the entire state to compete against, Davis County high school students have an artistic touch worth celebrating. Davis County students were among the award winners at the Springville Museum’s 39th Annual Utah AllState High School Art Show, running now until March 25, and several others were accepted to be included in the
exhibit. “It’s a wonderful show this year,” said Dr.Virgil Jacobsen, Assistant Director and Curator of Education at the Museum.“It continues to amaze me that the quality and quantity seems to improve every year.” Bountiful High student Morgan Lynn Bronson won a Master’s Award with her “Dulce Et Decorum Est” (which roughly translates into English as “It is sweet and fitting.”) Bronson also won a Hein Academy of Art Schol-
arship. Woods Cross High student Catherine LeVitre won a merit award with her “Tonalist Portrait in Beech,” made with beechwood and acrylic. In the Congressional Awards category, Olivia Anne Snarr won third place with “Connections.” “The students received certificates of commendation by the State Senate and the House, and were recognized by the Legislature,” said Jacobsen, adding that they also had a reception with the
governor.“It was phenomenal.” The exhibit itself, which can be seen at 126 East, 400 South in Springville (directions are available online at www.smofa.org), includes the work of students from Bountiful High, Clearfield High, Davis High, Layton High, Legacy Preparatory Academy, Northridge High,Viewmont High, and Woods Cross High. “DULCE ET DECORUM EST” by Bountiful student Morgan Lynn Bronson. Rebecca Mann,Theresa Otteson, and Anne Marie Oborn. The work is mostly displayed along the lobby’s north wall, either hung directly on the wall or collected in small artistic groupings on both the first and second floors. There are also a few pieces of art on independent stands, as well as one in the main stairwell at the front of the theater. The idea is similar to the longrunning Loge Gallery at the Simmons Pioneer Memorial Theatre in Salt Lake, which displays a different group of Utah artists during the run of every Pioneer Theatre Company show. Though the Loge Gallery is largely meant to entertain theater attendees both before the show and during intermission, you don’t have to buy tickets to see the “Celebration” exhibit. The DCPA’s box office is open Mondays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., during which time anyone is welcome to come view the art on both floors. Anyone who’s interested, however, might want to do it soon. There aren’t any immediate plans for the BDAC and DCPA to collaborate on another exhibit — Dugal said that the performing arts center was currently ironing out some of its policies — the BDAC is more than willing to do so. “We hope to be able to work with them again in the future,” said Dugal.“There’s been a great response.” jwardell@davisclipper.com

Courtesy photo president, Mike Youngberg, who took it before the Bountiful Lions Club Board and got it approved. Youngberg, who owns MY Enterprises (a construction company in West Bountiful), along with fellow
Lions member Dean Richman, did most of the construction themselves. Youngberg stated that the Club spent about $800 in supplies and donated all of the labor. This is not the first time
the center has benefited from the Lions Club service. According to Henderson, a few years ago the club built two large floor-to-ceiling cabinets in the foyer of the center. When asked how Youngberg got involved with the Lions Club he responded, “I’m always looking for service. The Lions Club has been a really great place for me to be able to do these kinds of projects.” According to the Lions Club International website, “Lions meet the needs of local communities and the world. The 1.35 million members of our volunteer organization in 206 countries and geographic areas are different in many ways, but share a core belief – community is what we make it.” Henderson echoed these sentiments when she stated, “It’s just been wonderful. We really appreciate what they have done for us.”
‘Crowd Pitch’ draws many entrepreneurs BY TOM BUSSELBERG Clipper News Editor KAYSVILLE — It was a chance for budding entrepreneurs to vicariously see what it’d be like to pitch their money-making ideas to potential investors. That was the idea behind Tuesday’s “Crowd Pitch” sponsored by the NorthFront Entrepreneurial Alliance at the Simmons Business Center, here. “It was extremely well attended, we had over 150 people there,” said Steve Cloward, business center director.“It was interesting and fun.You get to see all kinds of benefit out of it – any who are entrepreneurs or who want to be.” Lendio of Sandy sponsored the event, one of many the firm hosts around the country.
It gave entrepreneurbased ideas and companies the opportunity to make a very short presentation in front of either an investor group or in this case in front of a crowd of entrepreneurinterested parties. Spectators received two fake $50 bills that they could put toward the idea or ideas they liked the best following the five presentations, Cloward said. QR Ciode City, developed by three Brigham Young University students, was the winner. It’s a form of bar code but in the format of a square. “They’ve isolated about 2 1/2 billion different codes they can use on all kinds of different products,” Cloward said. “Universal Studios will put it on their posters, and it can be used on the iPhone
where you turn the camera on, click on this code, and it goes immediately to a website,” he said. “All five companies had pretty impressive products, it was pretty tight,” Cloward said of the voting. Other presenters included H2OTech, which is developing a water pressure dentist’s drill, eliminating the noise and pain, no need to numb the mouth. Max’s Price Guide was also presented. It’s similar to the Kelly Blue Book but designed for diamonds. Splitrock Solar, meanwhile, developed a solar panel for home use, including a camping-type for lowenergy consumption. The V.I.E.W. is creating a new product for 3D imaging and teaching for use to replace the current 2D that is used in a lot of online edu-
cation. It’s targeted to forprofit colleges. Each applicant had four minutes to present their ideas, followed by a threeminute question and answer session.A panel of experts spent another few minutes talking about each presentation. “There were positive, positive comments,” Cloward said.“A couple of groups even came from Idaho (Idaho Falls),” he said. The next meeting of the group will be held April 6, 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. It will feature Boomstartup, a mentor-driven investment program developed in Utah County.

Cracker Barrel reduces usage BOUNTIFUL — Cracker Barrel Old Country Store developed its Utility Conservation Program to provide its local restaurants, like the Cracker Barrel Stores in the Layton area, with the tools they need to help reduce their usage of water, gas, and electricity. And, most of those tools are based on straight-forward conservation steps that area homeowners and businesses can also use to achieve real energy cost savings. “The program that we developed helps all of our stores control their energy use – and of course their costs,” said DeAnna Fry, Strategic Sourcing Manager, Services at Cracker Barrel.“While we know that everyone isn’t dealing with biscuit oven and potato oven equipment sequencing, we realized that many of our guidelines could also help members of the communities where our restaurants are located. By sharing these tips and ideas, we hope to multiply the impact that our initiative has on energy conservation nationwide and help our customers and neighbors cut their energy costs, too.” Some elements of the conservation include turning off lights and equipment that aren’t in use, keeping their water heaters at a safe but energy efficient temperature, finding and repairing water leaks, and directing ceiling fan rotation up in the winter to keep warm air circulating.

Jonas Lee Webster, age 35, died Feb. 22, 2011 in Salt Lake City after a brave battle with many illnesses. He was a warrior and fought to the end. He was born Aug. 21, 1975 to Dennis Lee and Kathy Todd Webster. He graduated from Taylorsville High School in 1993 where he enjoyed being on the swim team and playing polo. Jonas met his future bride Brittney, while the two of them were working as lifeguards. After serving an LDS mission to Bahia Blanca, Argentina from 1994-1996, he married the love of his life Brittney Leary. They were married on June 26, 1997 in the Salt Lake Temple. He graduated from the University of Utah in 2003 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He was an amazing daddy to his three boys that he loved and adored with all his heart. He was pursuing his PhD when in 2007, he became too ill to continue his education. He loved learning, doing research for his PhD, and spending time with his family. Some of his hobbies were reading books on physics, solving logic puzzles, and being in the outdoors. He worked for Summit Microelectronics and loved his work and the association with his co-workers. As a family we deeply appreciate their kindness and support during his illness. He loved having fun with his boys, they especially enjoyed fishing and camping together. Sam loved playing Xbox with his dad, Ben loved building legos with him, and Jack loved pretending to be his doctor when he was being taken care of at home by Brittney. He loved watching the Utes play and has taught his boys to be true fans of the “RED.” Go Utes! Jonas was kind, loving, and compassionate. He followed the example of Christ by never judging others. His example and infectious smile will be dearly missed by all who knew him. He will be deeply missed by his wife, Brittney, his three darling sons, Sam (7), Ben (5), and Jack (2). Parents, Denny and Kathy, sister, Melissa Person, brother, Tyler (Mandi), grandma Alberta Webster, three nephews, two nieces and many extended family members. Marilyn Geertsen Erickson returned to her Heavenly Home on the morning of March 1, 2011, shortly before her 85th birthday. Mom will be remembered for her infinite love, abundant joy and unshakable faith. She was born to Joseph and Eloise Geertsen on March 31, 1926, and was the oldest of six children. She met her sweetheart and devoted husband on a New Year’s Eve blind date in 1943 and they were married on Oct. 29, 1945 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They exemplified love and devotion for 65-1⁄2 years of marriage and were fiercely loyal to each other and their family. Dad’s enduring tender care for mom showed their abundant love. Mom modeled the Savior’s love throughout her life. She showed us all by her example, how to love, serve and sacrifice. She was devoted to her husband, six children, 30 grandchildren and 24+ great-grandchildren. She loved serving in numerous church callings and volunteered for the DUP (Daughters of the Utah Pioneers) for 48 years. She will be remembered fondly as an elect lady. The family would like to thank the Erickson’s loving neighbors and friends, the Bountiful 23rd ward members who served them tirelessly and endlessly and the caring staff of Applegate Hospice care. We can never repay the kindness and love you showed our Mother. Mom was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Paul and Jim, and a daughter, Judy Whitaker. She will be sincerely missed by her husband, Delmon W. Erickson; and children, Susan McAdams, Judy (deceased) (Bruce) Whitaker, Dave (Aura) Erickson, Doug (Cerrie) Erickson, Karen Crist (Julie), Kris (Chez) Steel; and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Strong fourth quarter lifts Braves to the finals WEEKEND • March 6, 2011 • B1
Braves score 25 in last quarter to beat the ’Cats BY SHAIN GILLET Clipper Sports Editor OGDEN — It was the semifinals to be a part of for fans, media, and anyone else that loves high school basketball playoffs. Until the fourth quarter started. That’s when the Bountiful Braves posted 25 points in the final eight minutes to lift themselves into the state 4A championship for the first time since 2008, beating the Woods Cross Wildcats 62-52 Friday night. “I think what won it for us was our three centers,” said Bountiful coach Mike Maxwell. “They keyed in on Austin Bankowski the entire game and just beat him up in the middle. “By the end of the game, we could tell he was running out of steam there. Those three players did a heck of a job against Bankowski tonight.” The three centers that night against Bankowski consisted of Dan Prawitt, Britt Harding and Brock Yates, who combined to hold Bankowski to just 16 points. Bankowski’s output was only half his 32 points he scored against Olympus in the quarter-finals game. The trio for Bountiful also combined to score 14 points with 16 total rebounds in the game. The first three quarters of play were a tight affair from the opening tip off, as the two teams finished the first quarter scoring a combined 15 points. But six key free throws made by Nick Williams and Yates helped the Braves to a six point halftime advantage. The starting five of Williams, LaSalle, Prawitt, Salazar and John Maxwell were slightly outdueled in the third quarter, as the Braves were outscored 19-13 and the Wildcats came back to tie the game. Woods Cross’ effort was led by Bankowski and ZachHunsaker, who scored 15 of the team’s 19 points in the quarter in order to tie the game. The Braves started the fourth quarter on a 6-0 run, holding the Wildcats scoreless for the first few minutes. But when the Braves lead went down to one point, Salazar came back into the game and scored five straight points to give Bountiful a 48-42 lead with about four minutes left in the game. “That was a pretty important part of the game,” said Maxwell. “That turned the tide of the game. He stepped in there, scored those five points and the rest of them stepped up and finished off the game for us. “I think they’ve figured out that winning the rebounds and battling throughout is the key to winning these ball games, especially in the playoffs.” From that point forward, the Braves went on a 14-6 run to end the ball game with the berth into the 4A finals, where they will take on either Region 6 opponent Highland, or Region 7 Lehi. “It’ll certainly be interesting to see a Region 6 final,” said Maxwell. “But Lehi is a tough team in Region 7 too. So we’ll have to be aware and be ready for whichever opponent steps in there.” Salazar finished the game with 16 points, six ebounds and five assists on the night. Nick Williams led all scorers with 17 points while pulling down six rebounds himself. “It’s a happy feeling,” said Salazar after the game. “But you've got to keep your head.” When asked the question of whether or not facing Region 6 opponent Highland made a difference, Salazar responded by saying the opponent doesn’t matter as much as being prepared to win the game. “We’ll just go out there and keep playing hard,” he said. “Last year we were all juniors so it was a learning experience, but we’ve played together for a very long time. “We’ve been around the block and faced some good teams. But we’ll play our hardest, go out there and see what happens.” Bankowski led the Wildcats with 16 points and five rebounds, while Hunsaker had 11 points and Ryan Peterson scored 15 points with five ebounds in the loss. As of presstime Friday night, it wasn't clear which team Bountiful will play in the final, which is set for 3:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon at the Dee Events Center in Ogden.

Hunsaker sends WX to battle with Bountiful BY SHAIN GILLET Clipper Sports Editor OGDEN — Austin Bankowski had 32 points for the Woods Cross Wildcats Thursday night. But it was his one assignment without the ball that helped lift the Wildcats over the Olympus Titans 66-65 in the quarter finals of the 4A state basketball tournament. With 24 seconds remaining and coming off a time out,Woods Cross inbounded the basketball and had a play set up for the gamewinning field goal. Down by one point, Zach Hunsaker was given the ball and Bankowski set up in the perimeter to create a pick, opening up a lane for Hunsaker to go through. Hunsaker’s shot went into the basket with under 10 seconds remaining, and the defense held off the Titans from getting a good look. Olympus’ final shot hit off the rim, and the rebound shot fell short as well, sending the Wildcats to the semi finals against the Bountiful Braves. “It was my job to set up the pick,” said Bankowski. “So I was there and Zach got a good shot and it went in. “I’m excited to play Bountiful. They’re good and they’ve beaten us twice this
game after a pair of three pointers gave Olympus a one point lead. Wildcats coach Todd Street had a quick message for his players during a time out. “Keep our composure,” said Bankowski. “He said to keep it together and keep our composure, things will come to us when we need it.” After the Titans took the lead, the ’Cats never let the
deficit get any bigger than three points. But in the final three minutes, Jordan Jensen and Ryan Anderson hit a pair of baskets that kept the game a one-point affair. Titans player Sam Williams also missed a free throw that could have given the Titans a two point lead. After Bankowski grabbed the rebound, the ’Cats called the time out to
set up the game winning play. “The biggest thing in that final moment was they kept battling,” said Street. “They just kept fighting. “And they’ve done that the entire year. They’ve known that we’ve needed to battle during a lot of our games, and they’ve done it all year long. “This is such a big win for us.”

Braves run over Red Devils BY SHAIN GILLET Clipper Sports Editor OGDEN — The Bountiful Braves started their offensive attack with the first seven points. In their game against the Springville Red Devils, the Braves continued to go on scoring streaks, while the defense held Springville to just seven points in the fourth quarter to win 51-37 Thursday night. “That’s just good defense,” said Bountiful coach Mike Maxwell. “If you look at all the Region 6 teams, they all like to battle in the fourth quarter. “Every team in our region is strong in the fourth.” The Braves went on the offensive attack scoring the first seven points, while holding the Red Devils scoreless for the first four minutes of the game. The second quarter started with a similar output, as the Braves didn’t allow Springville to score until 3:19 remaining in the first half, building up a seven point lead. McKay LaSalle had a strong first half for the Braves, scoring 13 of his 25 game points as he was a strong presence from the inside and the outside during the first 16 minutes. “He’s been tremendous for us,” said Maxwell. “But this is a team, as you can tell. “Last game it was Dillon (Salazar) who picked us up when we needed it and this
the game. The win set up the semi final match against Woods Cross, which LaSalle stated he was looking forward to. “It’s tough to play a team three times,” he said. “Especially in our region where there are four really good teams in here. “And we know who each other are, so the game should be a tough one.” The winner will go to the finals of the 4A boys basketball tournament, which tips off Saturday.

time it was McKay that came up big for us. We perform as a team and that’s why we win.” The Braves extended their lead to 10 points before the third quarter ended, as Britt Harding became the focal point of the offense in those eight minutes. Harding scored seven of the Braves 14 points in the third quarter, including four points that came after a pair of steals that turned into baskets for the Braves. Bountiful finished the fourth quarter by holding the Red Devils scoreless until the final few minutes of

Vikings’ Logan Edmunds ready to play for SVU BY SHAIN GILLET Clipper Sports Editor BOUNTIFUL — Logan Edmunds isn’t just a typical high school athlete. A two-sport star in football and track, the senior has already had a multitude of accomplishments during his high school career. And now, he has a reason to leave the state of Utah other than to serve on his mission. In early February, Edmunds was one of many athletes across the state of Utah to sign his letter of intent. But unlike many local athletes who sign to play for an in-state university, Edmunds signed on to play football for Southern Virginia University located in Buena Vista,Va. “I love the feeling of being able to play football after high school,” said Edmunds. “I have always loved playing football and now I have four more years to play. “I am really excited to have this challenge of playing in the next level.” The two year varsity starter and virtually all-purpose player had a stellar season under Brad Lloyd in the fall. Edmunds finished last season with 118 yards rushing with three touchdowns on offense, but also led the team in sacks (with five) and was second on the team in

The Wildcats soccer team will also host Copper Hills in soccer Tuesday at the Woods Cross football field. The Bountiful Braves first scheduled game, accord-

ing in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) as an independent team. “One of the greatest things about them are the small class sizes,” said Edmunds. “And you get to know your professors personally. “You can really get involved if you want to. I haven’t decided what I’m going to study, but probably something similar to sports medicine.” Viewmont high school is also apparently a favorite visit for SVU Knights football coach DeLane Fitzgerald, who signed former Vikings Jeremy Lieber and Austin Cheney last year. Edmunds said that teammate Brayden Evans is also considering the university, adding to the excitement of playing for the Knights. “I loved playing with
(Lieber and Cheney) as a junior and I look forward to playing with them again,” he said. “Both of them love it and have nothing but good words to say about the coaches, program, and school.” As a final thought, Edmunds said he looks forward to moving to Virginia and taking in all the experiences of the campus before going on his mission. “I want to move out and live on my own before an LDS mission,” he said. “And what better place than SVU? I really like the small town feel. “Moving to Virginia is going to be great. I’m excited to play for coach Fitzgerald and the rest of the staff. This will be a new experience for me, so I’ll just go with the flow and have a great time with it.” sgillet@davisclipper.com
