KAYSVILLE — Youngsters need not worry. A check with Jolly Old St. Nick confirms he is planning to continue his tradition of bringing up the finale to the Kaysville Electric Light Parade.

The 13th annual event will be held Monday, Nov. 29 at 6 p.m., with the

annual Kaysville City Christmas Tree lighting ceremony to take place at city hall at 5:45 p.m.

The parade will follow the same route as for the past many years. It will start just west of the Davis Applied Technology College next to Davis High’s athletic fields at about 500 S. Main, here. The parade will proceed north along Main Street to 100 North, where it will turn east and disband at

100 East, adjacent to the city block and Kaysville Elementary School.

Santa will greet eager youngsters following the parade in the warmth of city hall.

This year, the parade is joining forces with the TUMBLEBUS to benefit the Family Connection Center Food Bank and Sub for Santa. Canned food items and toiletries are especially needed this year, as more people than

ever are seeking help from the Food Bank. In addition, Sub for Santa has seen a record number of requests, with new toys, gift cards for adolescents, gloves, mittens and scarves particularly needed.

DAVIS COUNTY — The latest terrorist alerts, and associated tightening of airport security, have been a big part of many Thanksgiving table conversations.

Many people aren’t bashful at making their opinions known about the new so-called “full-body scans” being required at many airports.

“I don’t like standing in one of those full-body screening machines,” said Richard Mann of Centerville.

Mann travels at least twice a month, and given the option of a physical pat down or the body scan, he takes the scan. But he would prefer neither.

“I feel very vulnerable when I’m standing there and these people are taking body X-rays,” Mann said.“I really don’t like it at all.”

Mann is not alone in his feelings.

Nine donation requests get cup funds FARMINGTON — County commissioners were able to approve nine funding requests from funds raised during August’s Commissioners’ Cup Golf Tournament held at Davis Park Golf Course.

Requests were received from 17 Davis County groups totaling $33,325.

Some $17,000 was raised during the annual event, which has always been geared to raising funds to help with children-adolescent-related programs.

BOUNTIFUL — Santa Claus will be the headline attraction at the seventh annual “Miracle on 2600” at The Square, Dec. 2.

Blaine Smith of Gem Smith has been a major force behind organizing this annual holiday event, which his year highlights the improved shopping experience people can have, here.

Many improvements were made to the parking lot and entrance and exit areas, making it easier and safer for motorists and pedestrians to navigate. The Bountiful Redevelopment Agency provided a loan that helped make the million-dollar effort possible.

The Square is home to several dozen businesses, most of them local, homegrown. They range from eateries offering Peruvian, Chinese and Mexican cuisine, to a wide variety of sandwiches to Smith’s Gem Smith, a greeting card shop, bakery, and many other types of businesses.

Multi-county trail honored by leaders

BY TOM BUSSELBERG Clipper News Editor NORTH SALT LAKE — The recent opening of the Davis County Jordan River Trail “Chevron Mile” attracted some top Salt Lake City and County officials.

Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon and Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker were on hand for the ribbon cutting, which celebrated Davis County’s extension of paved trail to the Salt Lake County line.

The trail was made possible by a collaborative effort.

A state grant, county funds, and a $50,000 donation by the nearby Chevron refinery.

“This was one of the top projects” identified by the county’s trail committee when priorities were set four or so years ago, says County Commissioner Louenda Downs.

“We applied for the grant in 2008, didn’t get it, and reapplied in 2009,” when it was approved, she said.“To do it right, we knew we needed a little bit more.

“Dan Johnson (Chevron general manager) stepped forward.This is so close to their plant, they were very interested in completion of the trail,” Downs explained.

Paving of the trail and related work by Davis County Public Works was the quick part of the project, and was completed last month.

It was all of the background work that took some time, she said. For example, environmental consulting was carried out from October of 2009 to May of this year, followed by wetlands impact, working with the Army Corps of Engineers.

In addition, the State Historic Preservation Office did a historic and cultural survey for the county, which helped lead to final permitting approval being awarded.

Mayor Len Arave from North Salt Lake and Farmington Mayor Scott Harbertson also attended, with bikers from Chevron lined up at the ribbon, along with youngsters and other bikers, who were already using the trail.

“It’s already been a wellused trail, is an important piece of the lake-to-lake trail,” Downs said. Ultimately, the Jordan River Trail will run from the north end of Utah Lake in Utah County to the Great Salt Lake, going through Davis County and reaching into Weber and eventually Box Elder Counties.

“In doing background research, when it was the wedding of the rails (in 1869), with an ocean to ocean connection, this will

be the wedding of the trails, with a water connection lake to lake,” Downs said.

Connections are being made through most Davis County cities, with such cities as West Bountiful, Kaysville and Clearfield already open and getting heavy use. Other communities are in various stages of developing their trails.

“I think within a year or two we will see that (Jordan River Trail) entirely completed). It will open another roadway for pedestrians, bikers, equestrian.

“You’d be surprised how many people will use this trail, not just for recreation, but for commuting purposes.Also when companies are looking at moving here, they look at trail systems.” tbusselberg@davisclipper.com

LAYTON — According to AAA a lot more people hit the roads and skies this Thanksgiving holiday than last year.

That trend appears to be showing up, as well, when it comes to hotel stays in Davis County, says Davis Area Convention & Visitors Bureau CEO Barbara Riddle.

For example, last August, hotels were at 81.5 percent occupancy compared to 74.5 percent the year before.And a strong July saw rooms filled 77 percent of the time vs. 71.5 percent in July of 2009.

That doesn’t mean it’s all smooth sailing, Riddle said.

Take October for example.This year, occupancy stood at 60.2 percent compared to 62.1 percent the same month in 2009.And this September saw occupancy at 63.9 percent compared to 68 percent in 2009.

Traveling patterns still haven’t recovered to 2007 levels, however.

That year, October saw hotel rooms filled 72.3 percent of the time, locally, and 67.1 percent for the year.

Tourism plays a major role in the county, providing thousands of jobs. That comes down to construction jobs. For example, at the new Hotel2Suites in Layton is reportedly providing about 100 construction jobs, with the Hilton Hotels-affiliated property due to open next spring.

Taxes generated from hotels are used to help repay bonds for such facilities as the Davis Conference Center, or help fund the CVB, which brings in thousands of hotel and conference bookings.That’s done in partnership with the county’s hoteliers and event facility planners.

Tourists visiting the county, whether from Salt Lake County or Europe, mean dollars poured into the economy without having to provide schools and other long-term services for those people, Riddle says.

Antelope Island continues to grow as a tourism destination, second in the county only to Lagoon, which officials also said had a strong year in spite of the recession.

With most ski resorts now open, local hotels are offering ski packages and promoting proximity to ski resorts both on the north and south end of the Wasatch Front. tbusselberg@davisclipper.com

Cenus provides detailed portrait of Davis County residents

BY TOM BUSSELBERG Clipper News Editor DAVIS COUNTY — There’s a lot more behind that population count that takes place every decade than most people can probably imagine.

And prior to knowing what the “official” population of Bountiful or Layton or Davis County is, the U.S. Census Bureau releases a lot of other data-filled reports.

For example, a recent general profile report on Davis County included population breakdowns of various sorts, with July 1, 2009 estimates.

The county’s overall population was listed at 300,827 (current estimates are about 307,000). It is the 210th most populous county in the country, by the 2009 estimate.

The 2000 official figure was 238,994, with 61,833 added since then, or almost as many as there are residents in Layton. The percentage growth is 25.9 per-

Sheriff-elect names chief staff members

BY TOM BUSSELBERG Clipper News Editor FARMINGTON — Sheriff-elect Todd Richardson has announced key staff appointments and his transition team.

He will assume duties as the new chief county law enforcement officer in early January.

Richardson ran unopposed in the general election earlier this month and replaces Sheriff Bud Cox, who chose not to run for another term.

Veteran employees of the Sheriffs Department Brent Peters and Kevin Fielding have been named as Richardson’s chief deputies.

“Together, with my chief deputies, we will work our way through the process of making this transition as smooth as possible,” Richardson said in material he provided.

His transition team will be led by Rep. Paul Ray, RClinton. In the House, Ray serves as chair of the Health and Human Services committee and as a member of the law enforcement committee.

In addition, Ray chairs a national task force dealing with issues of national security and criminal justice.

The transition committee also is due to include Sheriff’s Office staff as well as community leaders and “concerned citizens who understand the challenges and issues facing law enforcement and public policy in general,” Richardson said. tbusselberg@davisclipper.com

Births per 1,000 population in 2007 was 21.4; 10.1 in 2000, and 20.5 in 1990.

Infant deaths per 1,000 live births in 2007 was 6.3, 5.4 in 2007 and 7.2 in 1990.

People of all ages in poverty in 2007 totaled 17,875.The median household income was $67,005 in 2008. By comparison, that figure was $53,726 in 1999 and $35,108 in 1989.

The civilian labor force jumped from 86,550 in 1990 to 119,528 in 2000 and 145,041 in 2009.

The business community

has grown steadily along with population growth, the Census figures show.There were 2,629 “private nonfarm establishments” in 1990, 4,606 in 2000 and 6,303 in 2008.

Per capita personal income, meanwhile, stood at $31,518 in 2007.

The number of children in the county under the age of 5 totaled 31,044 in 2009, at nearly one in 10 resi-

dents; those 5 to 9 totaled 29,045, those 10 to 14, 26,412, and those 15 to 19, 23,268.

Those aged 20 to 24 totaled 20,207, while 25 to 29 was a bit higher, at 24,456.

The 30 to 34 age bracket had a very similar number, at 24,887, while 35 to 39year-olds totaled 19,062.

In the 40 to 44 category, thee were 17,154 as of July 1, 2009, and 18,179 in the 45 to 49 age range. For 50 to 55, there were 17,078, with a far lower number in the 55 to 59 category, at 14,053.

The 60-64 age group showed 10,569, while there were 7,658 in the 65 to 69 bracket.

There were 5,826 in the 70 to 74 age range, 4,692 in the 75 to 79 age category, and 3,383 in the 80 to 84 age range.There were 2,963 aged 85 and over, or nearly 1 percent of the county’s population.

Collinwood: South Davis tied together historically, today

BY JENNIFFER WARDELL Clipper Staff Writer BOUNTIFUL — Though south Davis is no longer the single, unified city it once was, there are still links that bind the region tightly together.

Dean Collinwood, a member of the Bountiful Historical Commission, touched on some of the shared history of the area at a recent meeting of the Bountiful Rotary. It’s that shared history that is serving as inspiration for the regional history museum the commission is currently in the process of raising funds for.

“People might think that once the cities were created their histories became separate, but that’s not true,” said Collinwood.“Practically, historically, and economically, it’s still connected.”

like to say that the water drowned the deal.”

Despite those separations, however, the area still remained functional as a unit. Families from one area would settle in other cities, and even now the street

numbers will sometimes blend into one another.

As a larger unit, the area is also a force in the larger world. Collinwood highlighted some of the leadership that has come from the area, including two former

governors and the Secretary of the Treasury under Eisenhower.The area has also produced several religious leaders, including John Taylor, Heber C. Kimball, Henry B. Eyring, and Anson Call.

Call was the one who raised the money for the Bountiful Tabernacle, which Collinwood pointed out was a particularly impressive feat back in the area’s early days.

“Remember, they were poor back then and it wasn’t a completely cash economy,” he said.“I think it was really impressive that he was able to do that.”

It’s those examples that the historical commission hopes to highlight in the new museum. In addition to climate-controlled archives that would store historical records from all over the area, the commission plans on focusing on the stories of Davis County residents reaching from the pioneer

days all the way to today.

“We don’t want to say that history stopped in the 1890s,” said Collinwood.

“History just started a minute ago.”

For the museum, however, history has been slow going. Fund-raising started just as the economy dived in late 2008, and the group is still $400,000 short of their goal. Many people have donated – the Bountiful Rotary, for example, will do a pioneer orchard and garden outside the museum – and the commission is currently looking at a slightly scaled back version of the museum.

Still, their goal of celebrating the entire area in one place is a ways off.

“We’re grateful for every $10 check,” said Collinwood.

Clearfield hosts Dec. 11 Breakfast with Santa

BY TOM BUSSELBERG Clipper News Editor CLEARFIELD — It’s Breakfast with Santa with a water twist added in, here.

The city’s annual Breakfast with Santa will be held Dec. 11 at the Clearfield Aquatic Center. Early registration is recommended.

Limited spots are available for children ages 2-12, and for adults.

Activities begin at 8:45 a.m. when Santa and Mrs.Santa Claus arrive to kick off the show, riding atop a North Davis Fire District truck.

Registered guests will then be treated to a holiday breakfast inside the commons area of the adjacent North Davis Junior High.

Festive background music will be provided by the Clearfield Community Band.

After breakfast, each child can visit interactive

booths based on the theme, “Holidays Around the World.”

Participants aged 2-12 can also have their picture taken with the Clauses.

“As I passed through security last week, I heard the TSA agent clearly tell a gentleman.‘I’m going to pass my hand very high on your leg.’ The man's eyes got very large as the security agent very professionally ran their hand up his entire inseam.”

He was so surprised by the approach, Horman decided to hang around and watch how things went at security.What he saw surprised him.

“I sat just past the TSA station and watched for maybe 20 minutes. I saw four women in their 60s and 70s become visibly disturbed as the TSA agent’s hands were placed squarely between their buttocks, run straight between their breasts, and examining their waistlines.

Horman then talked to the women.

“One said, ‘I am mortified, I don’t even know what just happened to me,’” Horman said.“The other, who looked just like my 80-yearold aunt, said ‘I just looked forward while she groped me. I didn’t know what else to do.”

Horman prefers to do the scan and avoid being touched.That’s a preference shared by many.

Katrina Morgan, who has been traveling in Eastern Europe, is actually thankful for the security measures

being taken in the United States. She said after traveling overseas it gives her a different look at security.

“I can’t count how many times I have walked up to a security check point in another country and they don’t even ask to see my passport or visa,” Morgan said.“They don’t even ask for my driver’s license to prove I am who I say I am.

“It is scary.”

Farmington resident Mike Kylie is a pilot for Delta Airlines, and he too is forced to take security steps he’s not used to. Because of this, he understands why passengers can get upset about the measures.

“Even the crew has to go through security screenings,” Kylie said.“It can be frustrating, but what are you going to do?”

Kylie said what these current TSA approaches can do is increase the security on the front lines. But what the average person is experiencing will do very little, if anything, to stop the so-called professional terrorists.

“If someone really wants to take down a plane they are not going to try to smuggle something in though the front,” Kylie said.“Those who really want to penetrate the security system are doing things we don’t know about. But they are also being investigated and watched on a federal level.

“A body screening or pat down is not going to stop the real bad guys.”

A new county administration building will house most other offices.The existing Memorial Courthouse, meanwhile, is due to retain at least the front one-third portion, which includes the well-recognized classical columned north front.The fate of the two other, newer additions has not yet been determined by the county commissioners.

“We’ve had quite a few people pick up (bid packets),” but not as many as anticipated, said Barry Burton, the county’s planning department director.

The county commission is due to open bids in a special Dec. 16 meeting and award the bid Dec. 21.

Contracts related to bonding, meanwhile, are due to be signed Dec. 28.

“The bidding climate is still very favorable,” Burton said.“It’s kind’ve been the perfect storm as far as construction projects go.

“Bond rates are extremely favorable,” as well, he added.

County Clerk/Auditor Steve Rawlings noted previously that thanks to bond interest rates below 3 percent,“millions of dollars” will be saved on the project.

Some $21.6 million in economic recovery bonds are being tapped for the project, although anticipated cost is far lower.

Bids have also typically been very favorable for large construction projects, such as for the health building.

“We think they’ll (contractor) start right away” in January, Burton said.“We’ll

KAYSVILLE — It’s one art form celebrating another.

Several well-known Utah artists, including Davis County’s own LeConte Stewart, are represented in a new database of film clips being made available online by the Utah Division of Arts and Museums.

More than 70 clips are currently available online at www.artsandmuseums.utah.gov,

searchable by both artist and filmmaker.The clips, taken from a wide variety of documentary films made by Utah filmmakers, allow the artists to talk about their creations, their technique, and how they see the world.

“These films bring together the perspectives of artist and filmmaker to create something unique,” said Margaret Hunt, Director of the Utah Division of Arts and Museums.“We hope the showcase will prove to be a valuable resource and inspiration

for artists, educators, filmmakers, and the general public.”

Other artists included in the clips are well-known modern dancer Virginia Tanner, sculptor Avard Fairbanks, and maestro Maurice Abravanel. Some filmmakers included are Jan Andrews, Steve Olpin, and several others.

KAYSVILLE — The key to enjoying the holidays is to spend them with people you really like.

For people all across Davis County that person is local songwriter/performer Cori Connors, who seems to return the sentiment.This year, she is holding both her “Perfectly Christmas” concerts in Farmington, scheduling them for Dec. 4 and 6 at 7:30 p.m. at the city’s community art center (though tickets for Dec. 6 are almost completely gone, there are still plenty for Dec. 4).

“I just like the feeling at Christmas concerts,” said Connors, who will be performing with Mark Robinette and Dave and Carla Eskelsen.“People are very warm-hearted, responsive, and nostalgic about childhood.”

She laughed.“They tend to embrace my kind of songwriter during the holidays.”

For the last several years, Connors has done a Christmas concert in both Farmington and Salt Lake.This year, though, she decided to move them both to Farmington both to make setup easier and because her Farmington concerts have a history of

selling out well in advance.

“We may have a string quartet at the concert this year. It depends on how many tickets we sell,” said Connors.“We usually sell out, but I always have this fear that I’ll be stuck.”

No matter how stressful setting up the concerts are, however, the magic of performing Christmas songs that never goes away.

“There’s a little door inside of everyone that’s often shut because we’re way too old and cynical, but at Christmas we open that door and let the tender, childlike part of ourselves be exposed,” said Connors.

She’s seen even grown men wipe tears from their eyes at her concerts.

“It touches people, whether they want to be touched or not,” she said. “If that door inside them is even slightly open, music is the breeze that can sneak in and swing it open a little more.”

Why I have a fervent interest in sports The views expressed in this column are the opinion of the writer and not necessarily those of the ownership or management of this newspaper.

often encounter readers who are surprised (and sometimes even disgusted) that I have a fervent interest in sports.

The comments are varied… “You have an interest in literature and politics, so how can you waste your time on sports?”…

“Who cares about a bunch of arrogant college athletes and highly-paid professional players?”…

“Oh, I turn on the Super Bowl and maybe watch the Jazz in the playoffs, but I By Bryan Gray don’t have time to follow sports any other time.”

My intrigue with sports is that, unlike many other aspects in life, sports is unscripted. In the recent election, for instance, there was absolutely no chance that Sam Granato could beat Mike Lee for the U.S. Senate seat or that Morgan Bowen was going to unseat Rep. Rob Bishop in the 1st Congressional District. In fact, throughout the entire Wasatch Front there were only a handful of tightly contested seats (mostly in southern Salt Lake County).

But sports are different.

The Wall Street Journal gave the Miami Heat a 91 percent chance of defeating the Utah Jazz on Nov. 9.

The Jazz fell behind by 22 – and then won in an improbable overtime. Similarly, I have not heard of anyone who had the San Francisco Giants and the Texas Rangers playing for the World Series.The “experts” envisioned a close one-touchdown difference when the Utes played TCU this month.

We all know what happened to that prediction.

I

Indeed, life does have its share of surprises from unplanned pregnancies to job promotions/layoffs.

But many things in life can be foreseen from reaping a guaranteed 2 percent return on a money market account to the long-term effects of cigarette smoking.

Not so with sports. On November 10, for instance, I jotted down the Las Vegas odds on 10 NBA games and six pro hockey games, then compared them to what actually happened.

The Utah Jazz were supposed to lose by 9 points to the Orlando Magic.The Jazz instead won by 10.

New York was favored by 7 – they lost by 5…Atlanta Hawks were favored by nearly 6 points – they lost to the Milwaukee Bucks by 17…Sacramento Kings were favored to beat the woeful Minnesota Timberwolves by nine – the Kings lost by 10…Cleveland was favored by five points – they lost by eight…Houston,Toronto, and Memphis were all supposed to win – and they all lost. In only two of the 10 NBA games were the odds-makers close (hitting the San AntonioClippers game exactly).

The National Hockey games went similarly. Of the six teams expected to lose, four of them won.

That’s the magic of sports.While the arts can lift our spirits and show us beauty and unrecognized possibilities, sports immerses us in hope, the concept of hard work, and that desire can sometimes trump sheer talent.

That’s why I watch.

That’s why I cheer.And when my favorite team loses, I don’t don sackcloth and ashes and wander in the desert.

In sports, there’s always next season.

O bi tu a ry Robert Donald Dobias 1953-2010 Robert Donald Dobias, 57, passed away Nov. 21, 2010.

Bob was born Sept. 24, 1953 in Sidney, Montana to Robert and Mary Dobias. He was raised in Bountiful, Utah. He attended Viewmont High School.

He married Lynn Bullock Nov. 21, 1980.

They had two wonderful children, Allen and Tana. Bob and Lynn later divorced, but remained close friends.

He was employed by Delta Airlines for over 20 years retiring in 2005. He enjoyed many vacations with his family during those years.

He worked as a base operations manager for PHOS- CHEK in Billings for the past three summers, returning to Scottsdale for the winters.

Bob was a kind, soft-spoken person and well-liked by all that knew him. He will truly be missed.

He enjoyed reading, endless hours on his computer, and soaking up the Arizona sun.

He is survived by his son, Allen of Herriman, Utah; daughter, Tana of Ogden, Utah; two grandsons, Carson and Mason; his parents, Robert and Mary Dobias; sisters, Cheri (Steve) Corson, Debbie (Jim) Tabbert, and Cindy (Dave) Metzger, all of Billings, Montana.

He had many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his brother, Steve.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 2, 2010 at the Russon Brothers Bountiful Mortuary, 295 North Main where friends and family may gather Wednesday evening from 7-8 p.m. and Thursday one hour prior to services.

Penny War surpasses expectations CLEARFIELD — The goal set by students at Sunset Junior High was to raise $1,500 to help Clearfield families. But the goal turned out to be a little conservative.

Students, contributing in an event they called a “Pennies War,” donated almost three times that amount and as a result, hope to bring Christmas to may more homes.

The effort started slowly, with only $80 coming in the first day of the drive. But each day drew an increasingly larger amount in the sub-for-Santa program, resulting in a total take of $4,180.

“It’s been an absolutely madhouse here,” said Jeff Powers, an assistant principal. “It started off slow, but it’s gone absolutely crazy.”

School supporters now hope they can share Christmas with 20 homes.

Junior high students get look at real life

DAVIS COUNTY — Students at Bountiful and North Layton junior high schools got a feel for real life when they participated in Reality Town this month.

The educational program offered mini-lessons in researching careers, writing resumes, applying for jobs, writing checks and balancing checkbooks.

It culminated in half-day simulations in which parents and volunteers manned businesses. Students were given careers and paychecks and had to budget and pay monthly expenses for themselves and their Reality Town families.

While doing so, they learned about the realities of adulthood and dealt with money and issues surrounding children. They also were able to see how their grades affected their income levels.

“As the students try to work within their income...and experience the challenge of paying one month’s worth of bills on that income, they gain a greater appreciation for what they will experience as adults,” said Jane Shock, a vice president at American Express.

Sometimes it means buying a helmet for a child or teaching parents how to read with their children.

And for being the kind of teacher who does that and more, Kari Cahoon was recently honored by her peers with the 2010 William and Pat Child “Excellence in Teaching”Award.

Cahoon, who grew up in Bountiful and graduated from Bountiful High, obtained her teaching degree from the University of Utah and has been teaching in Salt Lake City schools in the 24 years since.

She was one of 10 Utah teachers who were honored with the award at a UEA presentation.

Cahoon began teaching kindergarten, has taught first- and second-graders and now teaches third grade at Dilworth Elementary in Salt Lake.

“She’s done a lot of wonderful things with helping her children,” said her mother, Gwen Liston of Bountiful.

“She’s bought clothes and shoes so kids wouldn’t feel left out or be made fun of.

She’s put in a lot of extra time and energy in helping her children in school,” said Liston.

“My focus is more on trying to meet every kid’s needs,” she said. “Emotional needs, physical needs, helping families, helping parents know how to be better parents.”

A large part of that is focusing on the positive with both students and parents.

“A lot of parents have checked out,” she said, “thinking that the school will teach their kids.” She said

she looks for every opportunity to help parents learn the skills they need to help their children.

Having a positive attitude and a rewards system can help the kids as well. “I really believe we don’t do enough positive,” she said.

“Sometimes kids are always in trouble because they haven’t been successful at school. But even the tiniest successes can really make a difference.”

Cahoon remembers one student whose attitude changed after Cahoon saw the needs in his family situation and got him help from specialists. “His attitude totally changed,” she said.

“He really, really blossomed.”

Over the years, she has seen other needs and worked to meet them.

Last fall, it meant buying a helmet for a student who had taken up skate boarding. Sometimes she involves her family in being Sub-forSantas when she’s heard of parents out of work. Some-

times she’s helped with coats. Sometimes with supplies.

“A lot of supplies come out of teachers’ pockets,” said Cahoon, when addressing some of the current challenges of teaching. Besides funding, class size and testing are concerns.

“Class sizes are so large now it’s really hard to get to every kid and their needs,” she said. She now works with 27 students.

“The pressure on testing is making it really hard to do creative stuff like the arts,” she said.

“I love the kids,” said Cahoon. “I love to see them learn. It’s fun. You can be creative in your teaching. I get attached to all my kids — there is so much satisfaction when you see them grow and learn and see the lights come on. I love the early grades because you can help them become readers and it’s amazing when they work hard and they can get it.” lshaw@davisclipper.com

Eleven players take home All-Region honors ALL REGION 1 TEAM

DAVIS COUNTY — The class 5A football championship team was decided a week ago Friday, with the Bingham Miners taking care of the Fremont Silverwolves 30-7 to cap off a great football season.

Now that the dust has settled as to who reigns supreme in 5A, the coaches have voted and comprised a list of the best Region 1 members among the nine schools.

In all, 13 students from both Davis and Viewmont High schools were named to the all Region 1 team.

Davis’ Troy Hinds took home a codefensive Most Valuable Player (MVP) award and Viewmont’s Carson Shepherd was named as special teams MVP as a punter/kicker.

Other Davis High players named to the first team were Landon Hart, Andrew Sillotti, Daniel Moffett, Spencer Wiggins, Landon Simonsen, Brock Beyer,

Cade Miller and Kaden Hoskins.

Three Viking players were also named to the first team in Region 1, including Logan Edmunds, Caleb Hogan, and Adam Hewlett.

Hinds’ co-MVP award was much deserved, as he shared the moniker with Syracuse player Hunter Dimick.

He helped Davis become one of the best defenses in Region 1, allowing an average of 10 points per game during the regular season.

Hinds finished the season with 58 tackles and 7.5 sacks, leading the team in the latter category.

The Darts finished 8-1 in the regular season before losing in the first round of the football state 5A playoffs.

Hart was mainly a defensive player for Davis, racking up 42 tackles and four interceptions in the secondary.

He also had 96 yards receiving.

Sillotti led the team in tackles this season with 77, while also adding a pair of interceptions on the year.

Moffett was the second leading receiv-

er on the team, catching 34 balls for 476 yards and two touchdowns.

Beyer was another special defensive player for the Darts, as he finished second on the team in tackles (71) and third in sacks (1.5).

Miller was the second of the two favorite targets for Gavin Fowler this season, catching 29 balls for 554 yards and four touchdowns.

Hoskins finished the season with the second most sacks on the team, racking up three sacks to go along with 34 tackles.

Shepherd’s season was a very good one for the Vikings, who finished 3-7 on the year including two blowout victories against Roy and Clearfield to cap off the season.

“He’s well-deserving of the award,” said Viewmont coach Brad Lloyd. “He’s a great athlete and was very good for us.”

Shepherd was voted a special teams MVP as a punter, however, he had seven made field goals with 23 point-aftertouchdowns (PAT’s) on the year.

Edmunds played well on both sides of the football this season, carrying the ball 22 times for 118 yards and three touchdowns.

On defense, he was second on the team with 57 tackles and led the team on the year with five sacks.

Hogan was another good key player for the Vikings, getting 30 tackles and half a sack on the year.

Hewlett was another player for the Vikings that played well on both sides of the football, although most of his statistics came from the offensive side.

Hewlett was second on the team in catches, yards and touchdowns, pulling down 23 balls for 283 yards and four scores.

He also had 10 tackles on defense.

Ten athletes from the two schools made the second team in the region, including Davis’ Fowler, Garrett Walker, Kyle Bodkin, Tyrel Day and Dallin Hart; as well as Viewmont’s Justin Rupe, Bryant Dixon, Zach Kitchen, Brayden Evans and Carson Buhler.

Invitational sees hundreds of swimmers compete

BY SHAIN GILLET Clipper Sports Editor BOUNTIFUL — Every year, the Viewmont Invitational – which takes place at the South Davis Recreation Center in Bountiful – sees dozens of schools with hundreds of athletes competing in one of the biggest events of the year in swimming.

This year was no different, as more than 20 schools showed up for the meet, with some athletes breaking records along the way.

In the final team rankings, the Woods Cross and Viewmont girls teams both finished in the top 10, placing fourth and ninth respectively.

For the boys teams,Viewmont, Davis and Bountiful all finished in the top 10 as well, placing second, fifth and eighth respectively.

Helping the girls team in Woods Cross’ finish were a sixth place finish in the 200 medley relay, which saw Jessica Nielsen, Rylee White, Alexis Ralph and Kaitie Jowers complete the relay in a time of 2:03:13, just threetenths of a second behind Judge Memorial for fifth place.

The Wildcats also had finishes of fifth in the 200 individual freestyle, fourth in the 200 yard individual medley, sixth in the 50 individual freestyle, fourth in the 100 yard butterfly, third in the 500 freestyle, and fifth in the 200 freestyle relay.

The Lady Vikings’ overall performance was fueled by finishes of seventh in the 200 medley relay (just behind Woods Cross), 11th in the 200 individual medley, 10th in the 50 individual freestyle, 11th in the 100 individual butterfly, 12th in

the 500 yard individual freestyle, 10th in the 200 freestyle relay, and a fifth in the 100 individual backstroke.

The Viewmont boys team was led by Corban Bothell, a senior who ended the meet second in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:54:99, a Vikings’ school record.

Bothell also broke the school record during the 200 Freestyle event with a time of 1:48:41, finishing second in the event.

The Viking boys as a team finished third in the 200 medley relay, and had individual finishes of second in the 200 freestyle, seventh in the 200 medley, second in the 50 freestyle, second in the 100 butterfly, and sixth in the 100 freestyle.

As a team, they also finished fifth in the 200 freestyle relay and fourth in the 400 freestyle relay.

The Darts’ high finishes include a fourth in the 200 medley relay, second in the 200 individual medley, fourth in the 50 freestyle, eighth in the 100 freestyle, fifth in the 500 freestyle, second in the 200 freestyle relay and sixth in the 100 backstroke and breaststroke.

The Braves’ high finishes included a third in the 100 individual butterfly, seventh in the 100 freestyle, ninth in the 500 freestyle, fourth in the 200 freestyle relay, and fifth in both the 100 individual breaststroke and the 400 yard freestyle relay.

The next swim meet for both Viewmont and Davis will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 30 along with the rest of Region 1.

Woods Cross’ next meet will occur on Dec. 4, according to the school’s website.

Many locals compete in Thanksgiving race

BY SHAIN GILLET Clipper Sports Editor BOUNTIFUL — The Thanksgiving holiday is all about eating lots of food, spending time with family members, and watching football from morning until the skies are dark.

And for others, it’s all about...racing.

The Thanksgiving fun run held at the South Davis Recreation Center in Bountiful was another successful event, seeing many locals from Davis County compete in either the 10, five or one kilometer races.

In the 10K, Dillon Despain of Woods Cross took home the top time in the male 15-19 category with a time of 40:04.5, more than nine minutes better than Bountiful’s Braeden Dustin, who finished second.

Spencer Johnson of Hill Air Force Base finished third in the 20-29 age division with a time of 43:16.7, while Craig Devries and Brice Williams of Bountiful and North Salt Lake fin-

ished first and third in the 30-39 division.

Michael Frame of Bountiful finished third in the 4049 division, with Fred Dunbar and Jeff Bryson finishing second and third in the 5059 age group.

Laura Devries,Amy Uboldi and Holly Barker, all from the Davis County area, finished first through third respectively in the female 30-39 age group, with Devries posting a time of 46:53.1, just over a minute better than Uboldi.

Barker’s third-place time of 49:44.1 was just 14 seconds better than fourth place.

Other top local female finishers include: Shannon Engberson of Bountiful finishing third in 15-19 age group, Natalie Braegger finishing third in the 20-29 group, Sylvia Saitman and Joy Furubayashi finishing first and second in the 40-49 group; and Cindy Gough finishing second in the 50-59 age group. sgillet@davisclipper.com
