Alumni News We have received some great updates from alumni. Below are a few. We would love to get an update from you too! Carla (Daquano) Schubeck (class of 1992) received an Associate Degree in Commercial Art. Carla shared the following with us. “I am writing to give you my story if you want to publish it that will be great. I hope it inspires others that good things come to those who wait and to never give up dreaming to become something better then you are today. After college and some setbacks, I worked odd jobs for many years but I never gave up the dream that I was meant for something better than a mediocre life. I was released from 3 sign companies for not being fast enough even though I was only there for a few weeks. So I quit dreaming altogether until in 2000 I landed a job as a printer in a chemical factory. I was overjoyed at the chance to get to print and succeed at doing so. Pretty soon I was training people but yet I did not get a promotion. Then they put me in charge of overseeing temporary special projects for the company President/CEO but yet no promotion. During my time at the day job, I decided to take charge and get everything in order financially and resign. I had decided to live my life with a purpose that would use my talents and skill to start a part-time small design business for churches out of my home. I was already involved in church and wanted to do something with purpose and meaning. I do flags, banners and design garments for church dance teams.
In addition to that I teach beginning dance at churches, sell my products at conferences locally and out of town and have taught at conferences about the uses of color and incorporating the arts in a church setting. These areas involve drama and dance. About 5 years ago my garments were featured on a commercial that was advertising their church. I now have been doing this for 6 years and have been very successful at it. Despite the recession my business is booming and growing. My products have gone as far away as Alaska and Romania, and I only look forward to seeing it keep growing and expanding. I am blessed and I am living the life I used to dream when I was younger. First of all, I thank God for giving me the life I always wanted to live. I also give credit to my instructors at Davis who have poured their knowledge, wisdom, and insight into me to inspire me to dream, reach my personal and professional goals and live the dream life. To offset business, I also work at a day job I absolutely love at the schools helping tutor dance and art and other subjects to ESL (English as Second Language) K – 1 students. I hope my story will encourage others.” Kathleen Russell (class of 1985) sent us a card saying, “sure miss my time and friends I had when I went to Davis College. Hope to come and visit this year.”
In a recent letter from Freda Davis Raszka (class of 69 – 70), we learned she and her husband Phil have been married for 36 years and she has three children Jennifer, Heather, and Andrew, and one grandson Jacob. Freda worked in an office until she was married and then stayed home and raised her family. She volunteered at school and at her church for several years working in the Preschool program (PSR). She eventually took classes and received a teaching certificate for the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland. Freda still teaches PSR and organizes the Pre-K program, trains teachers, and works on the Generation of Faith Team through her church. Bonnie Lech (class of 1985) sent a note saying that she developed software for Pike Delta York Schools. She was also a substitute at the school. Bonnie taught driver’s education for Fulton County Schools, and then became the manager of Key Driving School in 1993. She now owns Key Driving School. She said that Davis College taught her the skills she needed to manage. Bonnie sent a note saying that she developed software for Pike Delta York Schools. She was also a substitute at the school.
