The products found in actual vape shops, called Advanced Personal Vaporizers (APVs), “vape pens”, or “vape mods” (pictured below), are the choice products for regular electronic cigarette users. APVs and mods are very different from the products known on mass media and are extremely attractive to younger generations. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes with adjustable voltages and wattages that are customizable to allow for diverse vaping experiences.

It is important to be familiar with e-cigarette products so they can be recognized as more than simple electronic gadgets or fancy pens if they are seen in schools or with underage students. Many vape mods or pens are customized with trendy designs, super hero logos, Star Wars and Disney princess themes (as pictured in the bottom right corner), skulls, Nintendo controllers, and more. Clothing tailored specifically to electronic cigarettes, often termed “vapor wear”, is new on the market also. Sweatshirts, like the one pictured to the right, and dresses have been made with e-cigarette vape systems inconspicuously built in to their drawstrings. With changing technology and culture, it is crucial to be aware of the enticing products advertised in our society today.

The Utah Department of Health’s Tobacco Prevention and Control Program recently released their 15th Annual Report. The report includes updated county-specific tobacco and electronic cigarette-use rates. Davis County data is included in the table below. When most people think of an electronic cigarette, they envision the first generation e-cigarette products pictured to the left. These products look very similar to regular cigarettes and are found mainly at gas stations and convenience stores with the usual tobacco products. Although they have impressive sales numbers, the vast majority of electronic cigarette “vapers” do not continue using these “cigalike” products for long.

Davis In 2015, Davis Students Working Against Tobacco (SWAT), a tobacco prevention youth group facilitated through a partnership with Program CARE at North Davis Junior High School and the Davis County Health Department, hosted several school based events and participated in various community events. In February, 18 students attended the Utah Tobacco Free Alliance’s Day at the Utah State Capitol along with dozens of other youth groups from around the state. The purpose of this event was to educate local legislators about electronic

Raise Legal Smoking Age to In 2015, Hawaii became the first state in the nation to pass a law prohibiting the sale of tobacco products to anyone under the age of 21. Over 100 counties and cities in eight states have now taken strict action in an effort to reduce the number of young adults and students who become lifelong smokers. Many lawmakers in other states, including Utah, are currently proposing to raise the legal tobacco age. There is also proposed tobacco legislation nationwide supported by several health groups including Campaign for TobaccoFree Kids and American Cancer Society. But what is their reasoning? Below are points to consider: 95% of adult smokers begin smoking before they turn 21. The ages of 18 to 21 are a critical period when many smokers
move from experimental smoking to regular, daily use. A substantial percentage of those supplying underage users with
products are friends and family between 18-20 years. The Institute of Medicine predicts that raising the minimum legal
age to buy tobacco products nationwide will reduce the smoking rate by 12% and the rate of smoking-related deaths by 10%. This equates to 223,000 fewer premature deaths, 50,000 fewer deaths from lung cancer, and 4.2 million fewer years of life lost. *NOTE: The sole purpose of this article is to relay facts and keep our readers current on nationwide/state issues. Popcorn lung is a condition in which the tiny air sacs in the lungs become scarred causing shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing, fever, night sweats, and more. The disease often results in the need for a lung transplant.
According to Joseph Allen, the lead author of the Harvard University study, “Recognition of the hazards associated with inhaling flavoring chemicals started with ’Popcorn Lung’. However, diacetyl and other related flavoring chemicals are used in many other flavors beyond butter-flavored popcorn, including...candy flavored e-cigarettes.” The candy flavorings often disproportionately appeal to younger people. Even if some e-cigarette vapors and e-juices do not contain nicotine, they may contain diacetyl increasing the risk of damage to the lungs. New Legislation Standards for Electronic Cigarettes During the 2015 Utah Legislative Session, the Electronic Cigarette Regulation Act was signed into law. The sole purpose of establishing the regulation is to prevent harm to kids and limit the increasing number of nicotine related poisonings in the state. Setting comprehensive standards for the industry to follow will ideally help. The act focuses on the standardization of four parts:
Labeling Nicotine content Packaging Product quality
The labeling requirements will allow the consumers to know what is in the product they are buying and using, including additives they may not have known about before. Having the nicotine content regulated will make the concentration of nicotine per item more reliable. Having packaging standards will help the package containers to be more child-resistant and also tamper-proof. This should lead to lowering the amount of child nicotine poisonings. A wide variety of ingredients is used in e-cigarette product production. The act will regulate product quality by monitoring these ingredients. The Electronic Cigarette Regulation Act will not go into effect until July 1, so retailers will have time to negotiate with their suppliers and comply. Local health departments will perform checks to ensure e-cigarette products meet these new standards. Source: www.rules.utah.gov DAR file no. 39797

Researchers tested a convenience sample of 51 different e-juice liquids from prominent vendors for three high-priority flavoring chemicals: diacetyl, 2,3 pentanedione, and acetoin. Results detected at least one flavoring chemical in 47 of the 51 unique flavors, and diacetyl was identified above the laboratory limit of detection in 39 of the 51 flavors.
Diacetyl made headlines 15 years ago when former workers in a microwave popcorn plant reported multiple cases of lung disease due to cumulative inhalation of the heated artificial butter flavoring containing diacetyl. Since this occurrence, many toxicology studies have associated diacetyl with the development of an irreversible and debilitating lung disease called bronchiolitis obliterans, also known as “popcorn lung”.
