Do you ever wonder exactly what is in dry dog food? What exactly has been pressed to make those little kibbles? There will be all sorts of rubbish; bone meal, blood and fat, quite possibly coming from diseased animal carcasses. If the animal isn't actually diseased then who knows what drugs it may have been fed. So, the obvious alternative is a raw food diet for dogs. In the wild, a creature of the same family as a dog, for example a wolf, would eat what he killed, starting with the stomach. As his likely prey will be a herbivore and as he will start his meal with the animal's stomach, the wolf, by default will eat vegetable matter which contains nutritious enzymes. The wolf, will of course, eat the meat and perhaps even chew on a bone or too so he gets calcium and protein. Actually, our wolf purely by instinct is eating an excellent, healthy diet. So surely a raw food diet for dogs which have been domesticated would be a good idea. It's natural to assume that a dog with a diet consisting mainly of captivity bred animals which aren't healthy will, in turn, develop health problems of his own. A raw diet for dogs will feed the animal's immune system and the natural ingredients will stave off disease and improve all round health. It's not difficult to prepare a raw diet for dogs once daily and it surely must be worth the minimal effort involved to make sure that your dog is healthy. However, it's a good idea to consult your vet before changing a dog's diet as he will be able to advise what ingredients will be suitable for the particular breed as some may be prone to kidney disease or arthritis and certain foods may be indicated. A raw food diet for dogs would contain lean meat, grains, vegetables and fruit with about fifty percent being meat and the other fifty percent non-meat. The total quantity should be approximately the same as the dog would normally be fed. Any meat should be lean such as turkey or braising beef (fat removed), vegetables are easier for a dog to digest if they are juiced or minced. Carrots are a good source of vitamins A, B, C, D and E as well as potassium and calcium and should always be included. Green veg contain vitamins A and C as well as chlorophyll and apples contain vitamin C. Kale, watercress and mustard greens are all good for the digestive system. Parsley, celery and beets are also beneficial in a raw food diet for dogs. However, cabbage, turnips, potatoes, onions, broccoli and cucumber should be avoided as they are not easily digested. Flaxseed is really good for a dog's coat and joint because of the omega 3 and 6 it contains.
