By now, most of the gold making strategies in the World of Warcraft Cataclysm expansion are known, and almost every single one of them are overcrowded, which means that you won't be making any decent money by following those strategies. One of the things I've been doing since I started playing back in 2006 is taking advantage of the maintenance. This is one of the most simple things in the game, yet there's almost no competition Taking advantage of maintenance as a buyer Many people put up actions with a normal buyout and undercuts the other auctions, but sometimes they will post it with a really low bid to be the first auction buyers see. This may be good some days, but not on maintenance days. 15-20 minutes before the servers go down you should make time for an auction house trip, check what items are posted with low bid and simply bid on them, I do this every Wednesday, the main items you get from this are epic gems, epic BoE gear, enchanting mats and ores/bars. Because the maintenance is on a week day most people will be at school/work and unable to cancel their auctions if they happen to get bid on, but the auctions will mostly run out during the maintenance when there are no people online so you can just wait at the mailbox for the items. Taking advantage of maintenance as a seller Selling items after a maintenance is the only time you will be able to have monopoly on all the items you sell, if you know how and when to post. Because most off your competitors post 12 hours auctions these will expire during the maintenance, which is good for you because 15 minutes before the servers go off you post all of your regular auctions for 48 hours, and buying the cheap items listed for 24hours+ at your fallback price, doing this you will be the only seller when the servers come up at 11.00 (eu). At this time people will be at school or work and having to chance of posting their auctions (unless they have the auction house app for their iPhone but this rarely happens). This way you will be the sole poster of gems/glyphs/enchanting scrolls/flasks or whatever your market is.
