The best way to build your strategy is to look at the stats of the best to see where improvement is possible. From inside of five feet, the best are nearly perfect at about 98 percent. But that number includes a lot of tap ins and putts that are way less than five feet. Still, 95percent from five feet should be achievable for the best putters. I think that 80 percent would be acceptable for the average golfer. That is making four out of five from five feet. Once you get outside of five feet, in the 5 to 10 foot range, the percentage made by the best putters drops to about 66 percent. That is 2 out of three for the best, so the average golfer should make at least half. Once you get outside of ten feet, the percentages drop significantly. To the point that it is not worth it to try to make them. You are far better off trying to leave a tap in second putt. The best rule is to lag anything over ten feet. Using a proper strategy for improving putting will make your life easier on the course by reducing the number of short putts you have to grind over. You will also find yourself getting closer to that 98 percent number within five feet if you leave yourself a tap in 9 times out of 10.
