Judengang

Design Studio Spring 2012 Charles MacBride

Design a structure that will hold the archives for John Hejduk. The building is to be placed within the opening at the northeasterly Judengang entrance in Berlin, Germany. This site is very powerful both culturally and physically in the fabric of the city. The spiritual and historical significance of the site, combined with Heduk’s own work and personal connection to Berlin as a place, will play an important role in the design.

Base Frame Design Studio Fall 2012 Jessica Garcia-Fritz

12’

SDSU DoArch program asked the 30 students to build a base frame that they had modeled. The students were to split into 2 different groups. Each would model one side of the baseframe based on which student idea was chosen. Within each group was 5 sub-groups0, construction, inventory, assembly, quality control, and documentation.

Digital Modeling Tutorial Workshop Spring 2013 Sara Lum

Each individual was to take six photo of a space/structure. The images were then to be collaged together to create a composition from those images. The collage was then analyzed separately into three different diagrams, orthogonal, tension, and architectonic. The three diagrams were then overlaid onto one another. From this overlay students used Rhino 3D modeling to extrude, boolean, and etc. to create a 3D model from their diagrams. The models were then pushed farther by using more advanced commands such as twist and array. The final model was then placed into a realistic environment.

Lightweight and Tensile Structures

Building Shop Spring 2013 Charles Macbride

This course focused mainly on two architects, Frei Otto and Buckminster Fuller. Otto was known for his tensile structures like the West German Pavilion at the ‘67 Expo in Montréal and the ‘72 Munich Olympic Arena. Fuller was known for his lightweight geodesic domes and his tensegrity structures.

Hotel MontrĂŠal Design Studio Fall 2013 Sara Lum MontrĂŠal Canada has an empty lot on the intersection of Rue McGill and Rue Le Moyne. A hotel made of 50-150 rooms is to be built. From analyzing a modern-day hotel room students are to focus on a certain area to improve and push throughout the project. This project focuses on boundaries.

Bedrooms in the hotel are at a set layout. Beds and walls are on tracks and guests are able to controll how they want their room laid out. If a floor is rented out there is and opportunity for an open event space.

Moveable panels on the building facade enable guests to be able to have a fully open room or a completely private space.

Aberdeen Museum

Concept Design Fall 2014 Federico Garcia-Lammers

Co-op Architects in Aberdeen, SD are adding an addition to the Dakota Prarie Museum. The new addition will be a mix between a children’s museum and an educational space. The outdoor space is also part of the new addition. It needs to be a designed greenspace for activites such as a farmer’s market and/or skating rink. This was a 3 week study where the students were to make 7 generations of massing models, 24 models total. The idea that Co-op would possibly use partial or whole design ideas from a student’s work.
