Celebrating 40 Years For
four decades, City Guide has grown as tourism has grown in the Big Apple. The origins of the magazine are with founder Dana Matthow, a theater producer (and nephew of Walter Matthau), who launched a theater magazine called Bill of Fare at the TKTS booth in Times Square. Gradually the magazine made its way to the hotels, adding attractions, restaurants, shopping, and TV listings— which gave additional incentive to keep it in the rooms. Dana and his partner, Peter Insalaco, changed the name to City Guide and the rest is history. The magazine grew to be the largest circulation visitor publication in NYC.
Davler Media acquired City Guide in 2004 and expanded the offerings to include a popular website, concierge and influencer outreach, City Map, This Week in the City emails and articles, Tourism Happenings emails for the NYC tourism community, Thought Gallery coverage of NYC talks and culture, the 100,000-member Everything To Do NYC Facebook Group, and tourism-oriented digital marketing services. City Guide is the city’s leading independent tourism marketing firm, anchored by the magazine, which still distributes 60,000 copies to city visitors every week.
For 13 years, Davler co-hosted the Concierge Choice Awards and continues its events experiences with last year’s Tourism Is Back gathering and this year’s Women In Tourism Awards and NYC Tourism Fall Kickoff.
Like NYC tourism, City Guide has weathered 9/11, the Great Recession, and a global pandemic to come out stronger than ever. A key to City Guide’s success is the deep knowledge of New York that can only come from long experience. Our sales and marketing duo of Eli Marcus and Vincent Timpone have been the face of City Guide for a remarkable 34 years. Our Director of Operations Ray Winn has 11 years experience and is our Honoree at this year’s NYC Tourism Fall Kickoff.
We would not have made it to 40 years without the support of many individuals and organizations. Special thanks to the thousands of concierges who hand out our magazines and maps, BIDs and organizations who support our street distribution, and most important, our dedicated veteran staff, almost all with us for 10 years or more.
remarkable 40-year journey from its founding in 1982 to becoming part of the fabric of New York City and a world-class cultural institution. We invite you to join our year-long celebration as we re ect on key moments from our past and present, and take an exciting look at our future.
The Intrepid Museum, a private non-pro t educational institution, was founded by New York real estate icon and philanthropist Zachary Fisher and his wife Elizabeth, who saved the storied aircra carrier Intrepid from the scrapyard and led the e ort that brought it to its current home at Pier 86 on Manhattan’s west side. Zachary and Elizabeth both believed strongly in our nation’s responsibility to honor the men and women who served in the armed forces and their families, while educating children and the general public about history and innovations. Their nephew, Ken Fisher, currently serves as a Museum co-chair and works diligently to carry on its mission.
NYC Mayor Ed Koch, Navy o cials and Intrepid former crew members joined philanthropist and Intrepid Museum founder Zachary Fisher in a celebration to mark the Museum’s opening day on August 2, 1982.The Museum opened to the public on August 2, 1982. Today, 40 years later, Intrepid, now a National Historic Landmark, serves as the centerpiece of an entire Museum complex that includes Growler, the only American diesel-powered guided missile submarine open to the public, and the space shuttle Enterprise, NASA’s original prototype orbiter.
The Museum’s renowned collection also features 28 historic aircra , such as including a Lockheed A-12, the world’s fastest military jet and spy plane; a British Airways Concorde, the fastest commercial aircra to ever cross the Atlantic Ocean; a WWII-era Grumman Avenger torpedo bomber; and the Douglas F4D Skyray that ew o of Intrepid.
The Intrepid Museum, in its 40 years, has evolved into one of the world’s more unique and beloved cultural institutions.
As we re ect on our four decades and look ahead to the future, we are incredibly proud of our Museum and the role it plays in elevating extraordinary stories of heroism, bravery, signi cant accomplishments and overcoming adversity, to educate and inspire today, tomorrow and always.
— Susan Mareno -Zausner, Museum President.
