The complementary shows, one by a legendary watercolor painter/ sketch artist and one by a Madison Square Garden photographer, offer an intimate perspective of the heavyweight boxing champion’s trailblazing career. Cover Story History Lives Downtown New York’s history, or at least the European-influenced portion of it, begins downtown. This is the oldest permanently inhabited part of Manhattan, and over the years it’s seen stints as a Dutch fort town, a British outpost, a center of the American Revolution, and the first capital of the United States. The story of New York and the story of America are told here.

Past and present come together at the South Street Seaport.

Although the city has been remade many times over since then, important traces remain, including Federal Hall, constructed on the site where George Washington took the first presidential oath of office; St. Paul’s Chapel (1766), where Washington worshipped; and Fraunces Tavern, where Washington bid farewell to his officers at the conclusion of the Revolutionary War. At the very tip of the island stands Castle Clinton, an original battery for the defense of New York Harbor. It’s now the base for Statue Cruises, the only way to reach two of the area’s top historic attractions: the Statue of Liberty (you won’t truly appreciate Lady Liberty until you see her up close) and Ellis Island, the gateway for 12 million immigrants to the United States. For more on the importance of the waterways to New York’s 22 www.cityguideny.com

development, visit the South Street Seaport Museum, a collection of historic shops and structures along the East River. Moving up the island you can immerse yourself in the city’s more recent history. The National September 11 Memorial & Museum features two core exhibitions at the foundation, or bedrock, of the former World Trade Center complex. A memorial exhibition—In Memoriam—pays tribute to the 2,983 men, women and children killed on 9/11 and in the 1993 WTC bombing. A historical exhibition tells the story of what happened on 9/11 at the three attack sites in the U.S. and around the world. It also explores what led up to the terror strikes, examines the immediate aftermath, and shows how 9/11 continues to shape our world. On the plaza outside the museum you’ll encounter two reflecting pools, featuring North America’s largest man-made waterfalls. In the spaces the Twin Towers previously occupied, there’s a clearing with 400 oaks and the “Survivor Tree,” a Callery pear nursed back to health following the attacks. There’s only one way to get complete perspective on downtown, which is a visit to One World Observatory, 102 flights up at the newly completed One World Trade Center. The tallest building in the Western Hemisphere, a trip on the world’s fastest elevators will deliver you to jaw-dropping views of downtown—not to mention two rivers, New York Harbor, the midtown skyline, and out into New Jersey and the boroughs. You’ll have vantages of another historic downtown landmark, Union Square. In

The story of New York and the story of America are told here...

the aftermath of 9/11, this was a popular point for vigils and memorials, following in a long tradition. Union Square has been a historic rallying point for workers’ causes; in 1882 it was the site of the very first Labor Day parade. When you need refreshment, you’ll also find some historic opportunities downtown. New York experiences don’t come any more authentic than Katz’s Delicatessen, on the Lower East Side. This institution has been holding down a prime Lower East Side corner since 1888. Get your ticket for slow-cured corned beef and pastrami that’s the best in the city. Across town, Washington Square might be the only Greenwich Village landmark older than Monte’s, a traditional Italian trattoria on MacDougal Street. This quintessential Village walkdown spot has been here for just shy of

a century and there’s good reasons for its longevity: it serves spirited, robust Italian classics—Italian Mama cooking, a bit better than Mama made it.

See the full sweep of New York at One World Observatory.

MUSEUM OF JEWISH HERITAGE— A LIVING MEMORIAL TO THE HOLOCAUST

Be moved by the Museum of Jewish Heritage.

Lower Manhattan’s Museum of Jewish Heritage celebrates the lives and traditions of both those who survived and those who perished in the Shoah. The museum’s three-story Core Exhibition doesn’t shy away from the atrocities that took place, but it also serves as a testament to the strength and perseverance of Jewish culture. Rich with artifacts and film clips, MJH is an important institution worth visiting. Don’t miss artist Andy Goldsworthy’s beautiful living memorial, Garden of Stones. Current exhibitions include Seeking Justice: The Leo Frank Case Revisited, the story of Leo Frank, lynched and decades later pardoned for the murder of a 13-year-old factory worker in Atlanta in 1915. 36 Battery Pl. A Confident and Compelling Othello: The Remix BY GRIFFIN MILLER On the record: I have a thing for Shakespeare’s Othello. I know, it’s a tragedy, a happy ending is not to be expected, death and heartbreak are pretty much a given, and the play’s provocateur is evil personified. Still the story grabs me every time.

Even the character breakdowns are miles away from the original, yet they fit into the plot like puzzle pieces. The always surprisingly malleable Othello is likened to Jay-Z; the villainous Iago to Eminem; Cassio, who “raps about dancing and flirting with the ladies,” is a Will Smith type. As for Desdemona, who is never seen onstage and heard very occasionally, she basically falls into the Adele/ Christina Aguilera category. In re-envisioning the Bard, the Q Brothers turned Othello the general into a ghetto kid who rapped his way up in the world to become a “hip-hop mogul.”

I first read Othello in high school; I directed a scene from it in college; I’ve sat through countless stage productions and I’ve caught a few film versions here and there (thank you, TCM). But I have never been as swept up in the emotional trajectory of the characters as I was in the Q Brother’s hip-hop take, Othello: The Remix. And, despite its ability to cut to the jugular at appropriate times, it comes steeped with animated sight gags and verbal shenanigans. A tsunami of hip-hop dialogue surges throughout the production non-stop as these four young guys—Q Brothers GQ and JQ, Postell Pringle, and Jackson Doran—bring it home under an infectious beat by DJ Supernova. Bottom line: performers and audience are in a kind of virtual sync throughout this confident and compelling Othello revamp.

Yes, a word has been dropped to protect the innocent, but then again this is hip-hop: sterile won’t cut it. That said, the show calls to both middle schoolers and adults...and, like Hamilton, you can walk in all anti-rap, but you’ll walk out with a whole new appreciation for the genre. As for the other male characters, for the most part instead of captains, ensigns, and so on, they are members of Othello’s crew or techies; Desdemona is “a powerful soul singer.” Those are the basics. I’m not going to go all minutiae on you—it’s a tragedy... but it’s frequently hilarious. There are dudes in ladies’ wigs. There are wonderfully bizarre quasi-costumes by Christina M. Leinicke. And sometimes a pillow can be a soul-wrenching item. Oh yes, it’s also produced by John Leguizamo and it should be #1 on your “must see” list!!

Carol Rosegg

Postell Pringle puts a contemporary slant on Shakespeare in Othello: The Remix.

“Momma so cracked out, she don’t recognize me. I had to get out, for my life and my sanity, ‘Stead o’ gettin’ high waitin’ to die like my family Grabbin’ me a pen with a will that’s rare... Now I’m a mother----in’ millionaire!”

Very Tasty Shades of Spain in Greenwich Village

Tio Pepe has prospered since 1970, and considering this Greenwich Village hot spot is right in the middle of one of the most competitive restaurant neighborhoods in the world, it must be doing something right. It is, in fact, doing many things right. Tio Pepe offers different strokes for different folks. Up front there’s a lively bar scene, a sidewalk cafe, exposed brick walls, bare tables of colorful inlaid tiles, peppy Latino music, and wall-to-wall young people. Patrons who walk through the restaurant’s main dining room and reach the skylight patio room in the rear enter a place of candlelight, stone and brick walls, a wood-burning oven, and romance. In both rooms, and everywhere in-between, the fresh guacamole is made to order (hot, medium, or mild) tableside with a stone pestle and mortar, the homemade corn chips are warm, and the salsa is snappy. Starters to savor include: sopa Castellana, a smooth, traditional Castilian garlic soup with poached egg and croutons; gambas al ajillo, sautéed shrimp with garlic and albariño wine; and pulpo a la piedra, Spanish octopus cooked over volcanic stone in the house’s wood-fired oven with roasted paprika-dusted potatoes. Jumbo pitchers of margaritas and the very good sangria are the order of the day. And then there’s the rice. At many— perhaps most—restaurants, rice is neutral at best. At Tio Pepe, the rice is not only impeccably cooked and moist, but it has a full flavor of a sort that has diners eating

it not just because it’s on the table, but because it tastes good. Also recommended is the paella Valenciana, saffron-laced Bomba rice with clams, mussels, shrimp, chicken, and chorizo; Pollo Madrileña, free range chicken roasted in their wood oven, stuffed with Serrano ham and Manchego cheese; and a chef’s pick of entrecôte a la parrilla, a choice sirloin steak fresh off the grill. Dinner is not the only time to be here. Weekend brunches are served from noon to 4pm and come with favorites like flatbreads, egg casseroles, and torrijas, a Spanish take on French bread. A good deal gets even better when you add bottomless margaritas, mimosas, or Bloody Marys for only $12. Another amazing deal Tio Pepe offers is their happy hour, with $6 cocktails and $6 tapas. It’s best when you combine; a favorite is the gambas al ajillo with a glass of rioja ($12). Happy hour is served TuesdaySunday from 4-8pm. At dessert time, try the arroz con leche, traditional rice pudding with a toasted lime cream; caramel custard (flan); or churros con chocolate, served with molten chocolate, dusted with cinnamon—they’re extraordinary. So is Tio Pepe.

A place of candlelight, a wood-burning oven, and romance...
