Conducted by David Robertson and directed by James Robinson, this marks the first time the American classic has been performed on the Met stage since 1990. Cover Story Come From Away: A Once and Future Kindness

Drawing joy from an unlikely source: the cast of Come From Away. On the night of September 11, 2001, after the World Trade Center landscape had been desecrated into Ground Zero, Canadians Irene Sankoff and David Hein—along with a handful of their fellow NYC students—sat around a piano letting music mitigate their emotions. “Being in New York on that day and the days following, we wanted to help,” said Hein. “We were all in the same boat. Race, age, whatever—that moment eclipsed everything.” Not long afterwards, Sankoff and Hein married and went on to collaborate on the musical My Mother’s Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding. Michael Rubinoff, a Toronto producer, caught one of the performances and approached the couple with an idea: a musical focusing on the true-life story that unfolded when 38 planes were forced to land in Gander, Newfoundland on 9/11, stranding 7,000 passengers from across the globe. What made the situation especially heartening, he said, was the generosity and friendship shown these strangers by the people of Gander. Intrigued, the couple launched themselves into firsthand research during a visit to Gander for the 10th anniversary of the events that touched and reshaped so many lives. While there they began homing in on the heartbeat of the show through first-hand interviews—a process that involved spending weeks living in Gander among the locals. “They wouldn’t let us stay in a hotel; they gave us the keys,” said 24

By GRIFFIN MILLER

Sankoff, adding that the only instructions they received were things like, “Feed the cats,” and “Just let yourselves in and out”. This small town world greets audiences at the beginning of Come From Away. Here locals inform us that Gander is home to a two-person police department, an elementary school, an SPCA, a TV station, and a hockey rink. Theatregoers also learn that the town is situated “on a giant rock in the ocean”. Even when not interacting and conducting interviews in Gander, Sankoff, and Hein continued delving into the people and stories that served as inspiration for their musical. And when the interviews, emails, and international Skyping let up, they found themselves sitting on massive amounts of material. The challenge then became how to tell 16,000 stories in 100 minutes with only 12 actors. “Naturally, we had to create amalgamations of certain characters and details,” said Hein. “For example, the reporter character is a combination of two reporters, allowing us to tell both their stories compactly.” “We relied on the people who were there to tell us whether or not we got it right,”

A musical filled with humanity and humor...

continued Sankoff, “and actually taking on multiple characters is a sort of ‘Canadian aesthetic’ insofar as we tend to step in when needed. Playing different characters is kind of a metaphor for how we can all be in anyone’s shoes.” In Come From Away, the lives of the Newfoundlanders and those of the visitors unfold gradually…and gracefully. Sankoff and Hein’s creative superpowers are at their peak when it comes to telling a story in beautiful fragments with intertwining storylines. You can feel the energy and how in sync they became with both the passengers and the residents of “The Rock.” Before reaching Broadway, the perfectionist creators took time to develop the show at the Canadian Music Theatre Project, Goodspeed’s Festival of New Musicals, and the NAMT Festival of New Musicals. Eventually, it premiered at the La Jolla Playhouse and Seattle Repertory and went on to shine at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C., the Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto, and the Gander Community Centre hockey rink. Only then did Come From Away head to the Big Apple where, after three years, it remains one of Broadway’s hottest tickets. In the end, everything you see unfolding on the Schoenfeld stage actually took place, including the budding romance between Dallas divorcee Diane and British oil engineer Nick. Notable as well is the pivotal character of pilot Beverly Bass, whose revelatory song, “Me and the Sky,” stops the show. “Beverly’s probably seen the show over 100 times,” says Hein. “And I’d guess Nick and Diane have seen at least 60 performances.” Indeed, Sankoff and Hein have built a show that not only inspires repeat visits but allows theatergoers to bond with—even hug—strangers next to them. It’s a musical filled with humanity and humor and you will leave the theatre uplifted and inspired. Guaranteed. Come From Away is playing at the Schoenfeld Theatre, 236 W. 45th St. To reserve tickets, call 212-239-6200 or visit comefromaway.com. cityguideny.com 25

What’s been less well known are the enticements of Staten Island itself, which have significantly increased with the arrival of the city’s first outlet mall, Empire Outlets.

performing arts at the St. George Theatre, a sumptuous palace originally opened in 1929 which presents film screenings and live performances today. Located on the former site of the United States Lighthouse Service’s General Depot, the neighboring National Lighthouse Museum illuminates history with exhibitions like “Life at the Light: Lighthouse Keepers.” New York City’s best Sri Lankan food is nearby as well. Lakruwana in Stapleton is a favorite, known for their 300-year-old recipe for lamprais, a rice and curry mixture wrapped in banana leaf.

Catch stunning views from the ferry, which runs regularly between Whitehall and St. George Terminals.

EMPIRE OUTLETS Just steps from the ferry landing, Empire Outlets fills out a sprawling stretch along Staten Island’s newly rejuvenated waterfront (in summer you can catch the Staten Island Yankees minor league baseball games right next door). Stroll along the shops for fantastic deals at favorites like Nordstrom Rack, Levi’s Outlet, the Gap Factory Store, Brooks Brothers Factory Store, Nike Factory Store, Old Navy Outlet, H&M, American Eagle, True Religion, and the Columbia Factory Store. Families can also go on a virtual adventure here with Virtual Rush: New York. This state-ofthe-art ride takes you underwater, through the air, and into outer space. You can even ride with the crew of Apollo 11 astronauts who first landed on the moon! The food court MRKTPL isn’t quite ready for prime time, but Shake Shack, the city’s favorite burger spot, is up and running already.

ST. GEORGE & STAPLETON Empire Outlets is part of the historic waterfront neighborhood St. George. There are 28

A few minutes’ bus ride from St. George will bring you to a former home for retired sailors that’s now an 83-acre campus full of historic buildings, galleries, and institutions. You’ll find the Staten Island Museum here, the only remaining general interest museum in the city. Families will appreciate the Staten Island Children’s Museum as well as the botanical garden’s New York Chinese Scholar’s Garden, one of only two authentic classical outdoor Chinese gardens in the U.S.

RICHMONdTOWN New York City’s answer to Colonial Williamsburg is Historic Richmond Town, a living-history village and museum complex that presents three centuries of history, arts, and culture. Forty-five Staten Island historic structures have been concentrated here across 100 acres of parkland, revealing the lives of the mostly Dutch, English, and French who formed the first immigrant settlements here. When you’re ready for further exploration, the Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art, the circa-1690 Alice Austen House, which tells the story of one of America’s earliest female photographers, and the eight-acre Staten Island Zoo are among the surprises you’ll find in New York City’s “Unexpected Borough.”

See all of New York and beyond from the incomparable heights of One World Observatory. There’s only one tallest. Only one strongest. And only one destination selected as the Best New Attraction in the World. These superlatives belong to One World Trade Center, and its pinnacle, the One World Observatory, rising over 100 stories in the sky. With an attraction this popular, OWO’s all-timed-entry system is a major advantage. Computerized ticketing ensures wait times are always kept manageable. You can buy your ticket on the spot, or in advance online. You’ll see some fast facts as you make your way to the elevators, confirming the superlatives: at 1,776 feet, One World Trade is the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere; with over 40,000 metric tons of steel and a unique concrete core, it’s the strongest building in the world. After a minute’s ride and a short video, you’ll hit the Discovery Level (the main observatory), with 360° sights of the city and beyond. It’s all here, from the rivers to the harbor, from the Statue of Liberty to the Empire State Building. Jersey and Queens recede in distant horizons. Helicopters zip by like hummingbirds, well below the floor-to-ceiling windows. The skyscrapers of Lower Manhattan—some of which once claimed title to the tallest building in the world—cluster below your feet like toys. Observatory hours daily are 8am-10pm, with the last ticket sale at 8:45pm. General admission is $35 and there are great package deals like VIP tours and ONE Dine prix-fixe specials, where you can enjoy multi-course lunches and dinners accompanied by the greatest views in the world. You can also save on combo tickets that include Circle Line Sightseeing Cruises and the National September 11 Memorial & Museum. 285 Fulton St. (entrance on the corner Vesey & West Sts.), 844-696-1776, OneWorldObservatory.com cityguideny.com/sightseeing 43

Who’s Who & What’s Hot on New York Stages

Matthew Murphy

By GRIFFIN MILLER

Four-time Tony nominee Laura Linney solos in the haunting new My Name Is Lucy Barton. Fact: the New Year is well underway and, as it turns out, the ideal time to get a jump on the shows you’ve been dying to see. Broadway previews and openings are gradually entering the Tony candidacy fray while Off-Broadway is a plethora of remarkable new productions. And, of course, New York’s theatrical roster is always a treasure trove of long-running classics, with star power in perennial full force. Musicals, comedies, dramas—the adventure begins.

BROADWAY’S LATEST

Brian Derballa

You’ll know her the moment you see her, if not for her extensive theatre resume (Little Foxes; Time Stands Still) then for her roster of TV and film roles (Ozark; Tales of the City; The Big C; Sully; Kinsey; The Truman Show). She is award-winning actress Laura Linney,

the solo star of My Name Is Lucy Barton, a poignant drama for which she received rave reviews in London. An extraordinary cast of high-profile actors is bringing their A-game to Grand Horizons, playwright Bess Wohl’s funny, shocking, and painfully honest new play that opened on Broadway January 23rd. Sharing the stage are Tony and Emmy winner Jane Alexander (The Great White Hope; All the President’s Men; The Blacklist), Oscar nominee James Cromwell (Babe; Succession; 24), Tony winner Priscilla Lopez (A Chorus Line; In the Heights), Ben McKenzie (Gotham; The O.C.), Maulik Pancholy (30 Rock), Ashley Park (Mean Girls), and Michael Urie (Torch Song; Buyer & Cellar; Ugly Betty). ography (by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker), the revival of West Side Story opens with an electrifying young cast—most making their Broadway debuts. Primed to break barriers for contemporary audiences, these electrifying young performers breathe reimagined life into the musical’s urban Romeo and Juliet storyline and iconic soundtrack. Previews are up and running through opening night, February 20th. Fans of Talking Heads alumnus David Byrne will want to act fast if they plan on scoring tickets for his American Utopia at the Hudson Theatre. The last performance of this cutting-edge concert, featuring 11 of the world’s best musical artists, is slated to end its standing-ovation run on February 16th. Unique (it is David Byrne, after all), this 100-minute milestone event is all kinds of amazing. On the longrunning musical Chicago front, two new cast additions are adding to the show’s legendary adrenaline: Tony-winner Paulo Szot (South Pacific) as hotshot lawyer Billy Flynn and Real Housewife Ericka break-out star of Jayne lights up Chicago. Bravo’s “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” Ericka Jayne in the role of bombshell murderess Roxie Hart. Szot, who is also known for his celebrated operatic career, will be with the show through January 31st, returning on March 16th for a nine-week run. Exciting news on the casting front comes from Disney’s Frozen as the musical’s original Broadway stars Patti Murin (Anna) and Caissie Levy (Elsa) pass the torch to McKenzie Kurtz and Ciara Renée respectively. Meanwhile, Ryan McCartan will be replacing Joe Carroll in the role of Hans. And if McCartan is familiar to some young theatergoers, it’s because he comes to the show

already packing Disney TV cred: he played Diggie (Maddie’s love interest) on the Disney Channel’s popular Liv and Maddie. Timingwise, Murin, Levy, and Carroll will play their final performance on Sunday, February 16th, with the newcomers taking over on the following Tuesday—roughly a month before the Broadway production celebrates its second anniversary on March 22nd.

NOT TO BE MISSED OFF-BROADWAY If you have yet to discover the singular writing and acting talents of Charles Busch, please make note: he has resurrected his 1930s tearjerker-inspired comedy The Confession of Lily Dare via Primary Stages at The Cherry Lane Theatre. Busch, as New York insiders know, is a transformation virtuoso, specializing in retro cinematic divas and dames— which is not to say he shies away from things like nun’s habits and vampire fangs. For this current production, he takes on the title character’s many life changes. He also gets to pour his heart out: hysterical hilarity, there’s no other way to put it. Joining Busch in this tongue-in-cheek comedy are several actors who have worked with him in the past. Longtime collaborator Carl Andress directs.

ON A FINAL NOTE On February 9th, The Pierre New York, A Taj Hotel is presenting its second Sunday evening with The Phantom of the Opera. Part of the hotel’s Broadway at The Pierre series (call 212-940-8113 for reservations), the performance includes songs and stories from Broadway’s Tony-winning/longest-running show by Meghan Picerno (Christine), John Riddle (Raoul), and, keeping the mystery alive, a former Phantom who will reveal his identity at show time. Making the evening even more seductive (it is close to Valentine’s Day, after all), audiences can order Phantom-inspired indulgences like a “Music of the Night” cocktail served under a glass with billowing smoke, or “The Phantom’s Encore” dessert, teeming with decadent ingredients, including a white chocolate mask and Playbill.

Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the duo behind South Park, are the masterminds behind this off-the-charts hilarious musical comedy about a pair of wide-eyed Mormon boys whose first assignment as missionaries takes them from ringing doorbells stateside to a remote village in Uganda where cynicism is the tongue-in-cheek way of life for the povertyriddled residents. Divinely profane, the show is an ongoing Broadway phenom thanks to infectious performances and a first rate score. Classic musical comedy with a wickedly twisted cachet!
