David Bowie, the beloved English singer/New York transplant who sang about “Changes” and is revered for perpetually changing his sound and look over a five decades-plus career, is being celebrated in DAVID BOWIE IS, a major exhibition that is making its final stop at the BROOKLYN MUSEUM. This first-ever Bowie retrospective includes hundreds of significant objects from Bowie’s teens to his death in 2016, including handwritten lyrics, diary entries, photography, set designs, album artwork, and rare performance material, with many items exclusive to the Brooklyn Museum presentation. This spring, come to the MUSEUM OF ARTS AND DESIGN and see Schapiro’s work along with that of her artistic heirs at SURFACE/DEPTH: THE DECORATIVE AFTER MIRIAM SCHAPIRO. Schapiro proved a multidisciplinary master throughout her long career. She produced astounding paintings, embroidery, fabric work, and sculpture. Schapiro was fiercely protective of arts and crafts’ legitimization in the art world. Cover Story Life of Pie: Breaking Boundaries with Broadway’s Waitress

Matt Murphy

A handful of years before the #MeToo movement turned the spotlight onto female empowerment, Broadway shattered the glass ceiling when Waitress announced an all-female creative team. It was a Broadway first.

Katharine McPhee bakes up a storm in Waitress. The groundbreaking quartet of women responsible for whipping Waitress into one of Broadway’s top grossing shows are Tonywinning director Diane Paulus (Pippin; Finding Neverland; Hair); five-time Grammy nominee Sara Bareilles, the musical mastermind (and sometimes star) behind the show’s Tonynominated score; Jessie Nelson (Corrina, Corrina; I Am Sam), who adapted the show’s script from Adrienne Shelley’s 2007 breakout film; and Julliard-trained choreographer Lorin Latarro (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time). “I’m thrilled that Waitress is breaking boundaries as the first Broadway musical with book, score, choreography, and direction by a team of women,” said Paulus at the

BY GRIFFIN MILLER

time, adding, “It’s a historic and long overdue moment for Broadway, and I’m honored to be working alongside such passionate and inspiring women.” At the heart of Waitress is another woman, Jenna, a small town waitress whose lousy marriage to an abusive husband, Earl (Ben Thompson) is counterbalanced by a) her ability to bake amazing pies with names that manage to reflect her life’s cockeyed trajectory (“White Knuckle Cream Pie,” e.g.); and 2) her circle of friends at the diner where she waitresses, especially her fellow waitresses: prickly Becky (NaTasha Yvette Williams) and nerdy Dawn (Caitlin Houlahan). As for Jenna, Katharine McPhee—whose impressive fan following, taking off during Season 5 of American Idol and snowballing throughout her subsequent recording career and emergence as the breakout star of NBC’s Smash—is the latest actress to assume the role (April 10 through June 16th). The show’s storyline finds McPhee’s Jenna finessing her way through various emotions once she learns she’s pregnant (“Betrayed by My Eggs Pie”), and her imperfect day-to-day existence becomes a showdown of emotions and decisions. Tell or don’t tell/dump or don’t dump Earl (“My Husband’s a Jerk Chicken Pot Pie”)? Have an affair/don’t have an affair (“Pursuit of Happiness Pie”) with her married OBGYN (Drew Gehling)? Enter the National Pie Bake Off in a nearby town (“Jumping Without a Net Bottomless Pie”) that would give her the money to revamp her life (“Getting Out of the Mud Mud Pie”)...or let insecurity stand in the way? (“My pies are good but I’m no Sara Lee,” Jenna argues.) Indeed, doubts, fears, and insecurities haunt pretty much all the characters inhabit-

“Uniquely human and wonderfully uplifting...”

ing this uniquely human and wonderfully uplifting musical. In the end, it’s a contemporary musical about imperfect people seeking happiness in large or small doses, and the highs and lows they encounter along the way. Prominent in this regard is Dawn’s reticence to forego TV dinners for dating, although she eventually gives in to Ogie—played by Tony nominee Christopher Fitzgerald—an endearing customer so smitten by the self-effacing Dawn that he declares his love with full-blown musical comedy panache in the show-stopping number “Never Getting Rid of Me.” How could Dawn resist? And while true romance may elude some of the show’s key characters, love does not—which makes Waitress one of those remarkable, heartwarming Broadway success stories, told by women, but with universal appeal. And wait till you get to the final scene...Spoiler alert: it’s a lulu!

The Sweet Smell of Temptation Apparently, it’s not enough that diner-inspired towers of luscious-looking pies flank either side of the Brooks Atkinson stage—a heartless study in diet assassination if ever there was one. The provocateur producers opted to up Waitress’s mouth-watering ante with an olfactory enticement that’s simultaneously evil and delicious—a kind of “surround smell” wafting from the theatre’s entryway. It’s a scent that pays homage to pie virtuoso Jenna turning out pie after pie starting with Act I, Scene I. Indeed, not long after not long after Waitress opened (4/24/16), producer Barry Weissler confessed to “desperately” wanting the baking aroma to be part of the experience. And, as it happens, the best way to achieve a genuine pie scent (apple, of course) was to install a convection oven in an area just outside the orchestra seating area. Bottom line: it’s a good thing you can buy pie during the intermission...

Waitress is playing at Broadway’s Brooks Atkinson Theatre, 256 W. 47th St. For tickets call 877-250-2929 or visit waitressthemusical.com.

The museum includes the Space Shuttle Pavilion, home to Enterprise, the world’s first space shuttle. Also on display are 27 authentically restored aircraft, including the British Airways Concorde, the fastest commercial aircraft to ever cross the Atlantic. Among temporary exhibitions you’ll find Ports of Call, which shows photos, souvenirs, and film footage of young sailors traveling the world as part of the Intrepid crew. With over 500 exhibitions, many of them world-famous relics, there’s something to hold anyone’s attention at Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Times Square. Robert Ripley himself tracked down many of the items in the collection—he was a long-time presence in New York, having moved to the city in 1912 and opened his museum here in 1939. New to the attraction is the interactive experience Ripley’s SMASH DASH, exclusive to Times Square. You’ll be in a race against time with buttons buzzing and lighting up all around you; the more you turn off, the more points you earn. Beat the clock, or challenge a friend! 234 W. 42nd St.(btw. Spectacular views from dawn to dusk at Top of the Rock. See for miles and miles from the incomparable heights of One World Observatory. There’s only one tallest. Only one strongest. And only one destination selected as the Best New Attraction in the World. These superlatives belong to One World Trade Center, and its pinnacle, the One World Observatory, rising over 100 stories in the sky. You can buy your ticket on the spot, or in advance online. You’ll see some fast facts as you make your way to the elevators, confirming the superlatives: at 1,776 feet, One World Trade is the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere; with over 45 tons of steel and a unique concrete core, it’s the strongest building in the world. BY GRIFFIN MILLER

Danny Skinner, Lilli Cooper, and Ethan Slater sing under the sea in the crazy fun SpongeBob SquarePants musical. Pedal-to-metal doesn’t begin to describe the annual frenzy surrounding Broadway’s busiest time of year. Rehearsal studios in and around the Great White Way are booked to capacity; trucks crammed with newly minted scenery belly up to loading docks; preview performances take their first baby steps; paparazzi scramble for primo spots on opening nights; ticket holders snake their way into legendary Broadway houses; reviewers spill their critical guts with make-or-break gusto. In short, the dash to the Tony Awards finish line is officially on. Spring 2018 is proving itself a “something- for-everyone” draw thanks to an eclectic catalog of choices from revivals to new musicals and dramas featuring A-listers from theatre, film, and television.

STAR-POWERED REVIVALS Tony and Oscar winner Denzel Washington’s stage buzz is stratospheric now that he’s back on Broadway playing Hickey in Eugene O’Neill’s The Iceman Cometh. His press-worthy costars include Tony winners Bill Irwin (Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?; Legion; Law & Order: SVU), Frank Wood (Side Man; The Night Of), and Tony nominees Reg Rogers (Holiday; Primal Fear) and Tammy Blanchard (Gypsy; Life with Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows). (Six degrees of separation alert:

56 www.cityguideny.com

Blanchard’s costar in Gypsy was Bernadette Peters, currently dazzling audiences in the Tony-winning musical revival Hello, Dolly!) Also on the revival menu this spring are two musical theatre classics boasting impressive acting lineups: Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Carousel starring Tony winner Jesse Mueller (Beautiful), Tony nominee Joshua Henry (The Scottsboro Boys; Shuffle Along…), and opera great Renée Fleming; and Lerner and Lowe’s My Fair Lady, with Downton Abbey’s Harry Hadden-Paton as Professor Henry Higgins, Lauren Ambrose (Six Feet Under) as Eliza Doolittle, Tony winner Norbert Leo Butz (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels), and Diana Rigg (yes, The Avengers’ Emma Peel during the 1960s—definitely worth a YouTube visit), whose more recent credits include Game of Thrones and Victoria. Tony Kushner’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Angels in America—with Tony winner Nathan Lane (The Producers; A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum) and Oscar and Tony nominee Andrew Garfield (Hacksaw Ridge; Death of a Salesman)—is back on Broadway in a mind-altering new staging by director Marianne Elliott. I know, it’s a two-part commitment, but it is epic, blistering, beautiful, and unforgettable. Angels in America is marking a quartercentury return to Broadway, but you can also find a much earlier and equally groundbreak-

ing work. Mart Crowley’s The Boys in the Band returns to Broadway in a 50th anniversary production with a killer cast that’s led by Zachary Quinto (Star Trek; American Horror Story), Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory), Matt Bomer (The Normal Heart; White Collar), and Tony nominee Andrew Rannells (The Book of Mormon; Girls).

KINKY BOOTS & WAYNE BRADY: WELL-HEELED & TOGETHER AGAIN The stiletto siren that seduces actors to take on the role of Lola in the Tony-winning Harvey Fierstein-Cyndi Lauper hit, Kinky Boots, has evidently lured Emmy winner Wayne Brady back into the crimson thighhigh boots he first filled in 2015. At least temporarily. Through April 26th, he’ll be filling in for J. Harrison Ghee, who’s taking a leave of absence. “Lola is a role of a lifetime for an actor, a true tour de force,” says Brady, adding: “In this current political and social climate, we need more people to see characters like Lola… unafraid to speak her mind and unabashedly true to herself.” Recently, as I was binging on vintage Whose Line Is It Anyway?, I was struck not only by Brady’s versatility, but by his charisma as a performer. Since I missed his first go-round at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre, I’m hoping to catch him now—this time alongside Jake Shears (Scissor Sisters) as Charlie Price (through April 1st) and Grammy-winner Kirstin Maldonado (Pentatonix) as Lauren (through April 8th). “To say that I’m thrilled to step back into Lola’s fabulous shoes would be the understatement of the century,” says Brady.

crazy fun surprise with a cast that ingeniously creates living cartoon characters. Wicked is another show that keeps improving with time, as new Elphabas, Glindas, Fiyeros, Nessaroses, and Boqs take over Emerald City. And should you have a Harry Potter fan in your family or friend circle, beware: the sell-out London import Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is a coveted two-part wonder that requires pre-ordered tickets. If you have them in hand, congratulations. But if you don’t, may I suggest another Hogwarts saga now playing at Off-Broadway’s New World Stages: Puffs, Or: Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic and Magic. This hyper-funny, majorly clever parody centers on a gaggle of misfit kids sorted into Hogwarts’ lesser house: Hufflepuff, whose sole celebrity, Cedric Diggory, was chosen to represent Hogwarts in the Triwizard Tournament. Fans of the Potter books and films love it…many show up in costumes. Inside jokes abound, but outsiders get the manic gist and enjoy it as well. I’m preparing for a return visit. One final thing: the regular show can be a bit bawdy for young kids, so two weekend matinees are totally “family friendly.” Brilliant.

Kids are well served this season by some awesome new shows. Frozen—Disney’s latest addition to its stable of must-sees (Aladdin and The Lion King are already bona fide hits)—is already selling out, but happily there are other options if you failed to book ahead. Steak, Scotch, & Much More: Empire Steak House Empire Steak House has perfected the classic combination of steak and scotch. Whether you’re looking for a luxurious meal in Midtown East or West, Empire has you covered with attentive service and tip-top ingredients, from jumbo shrimp cocktails to start through to the tiramisu at the end of your meal. Brothers Russ, Jack, and Jeff Sinanaj opened Empire after training at Peter Luger Steakhouse; every night they show off their mastery with USDA Prime steaks that sizzle, sing, and satisfy.

THE STEAK. Black-and-blue, rare, medium, or well-done, the steaks are the showstoppers at Empire. Empire serves only USDA Prime beef, the highest quality of meat on the market. Their steaks are dry-aged on-premises, from the ribeye to the rack of lamb. Don’t miss the tomahawk, a bone-in ribeye with a bold presentation. Empire also serves the creme-de-la-creme of Japanese steaks, A5 Wagyu ribeyes, and tenderloins. You’ll be asking for tureens of their signature sauce. (Don’t worry; they sell it by the bottle.) THE SURF. Empire serves fantastic fried calamari, as well as a delicious salmon entree. A classic surf and turf is yours for the taking as well: an 8-oz. filet mignon paired with 10-oz. lobster tail. Crab cakes and tuna tartare are among the standout appetizers. THE SPACE. White tablecloths, chandeliers, and plenty of space welcome at both locations. The original location in the Theater District

BY MERRILL LEE GIRARDEAU

opened in 2013, while the newer space opened in 2016 on East 50th St. in a former opera house/cabaret (you’ll see the origins right when you walk in the door). THE SCOTCH. Whether you’re a scotch aficionado or a complete novice, you’ll be guided to the perfect single-malt through a list 100 strong, broken down by region. The whiskey and bourbon outlay is impressive as well, as is their list of house specialty cocktails (go for the old fashioned). And that’s in addition to over 400 vintages of wine! In the Midtown East location, the wine room with its tall ceilings and lit shelves can be reserved for private dining. THE STEALS. The original Empire Steakhouse takes advantage of its central Theater District location to offer a prix-fixe pre-theater deal. For $42.95, you’ll get three courses and a side dish. You can sample the soup of the day, enjoy a 12-oz. sirloin, and take bite after bite of heavenly chocolate mousse cake.
