ongoing It’s hard to believe that Studio 54, the mecca of the disco era, lasted just 3 years. After its opening on April 26, 1977, the legendary midtown club quickly achieved iconic status. Celebs from Andy Warhol to Farrah Fawcett flocked to this outrageous and exuberant party scene. By February 1980, the club was shut down, but its legacy remains vital 40 years later. A new exhibition at the Brooklyn MuseuM, Studio 54: Night Magic uses photographs, drawings, film, and fashion to document how this nightclub came to reflect a particular moment in the cultural history of New York City. The exhibition design parallels that of the club itself and features a soundtrack of disco hits like Chic’s “Le Freak” and Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive.” 200 Eastern Pkwy. Cover Story Hop to It: Easter in NYC

Find extraordinary steak and much more at Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steakhouse New York. Easter in New York brings egg hunts, fine brunches, and a bonnet-filled procession down Fifth Avenue. Celebrate the holiday in true New York fashion with a trip to the Easter Parade. The tradition dates back to the 1870s, when upper class New Yorkers would stroll down Fifth Avenue after church and show off the fashionable new outfits they’d purchased for the holiday. Traffic shuts down for the parade on Fifth Avenue between 49th and 57th Streets from 10am to 4pm on Easter Sunday, letting paradegoers fill the streets in their elaborate Easter finest. After the parade, New York’s restaurants will be rolling out memorable meals for the holiday. The Sea Fire Grill’s superior service, super-fresh seafood, and cosmopolitan vibe make it a great destination. This Easter enjoy a three-course prix fixe with the likes of lobster bisque, rack of lamb, and New York–style cheesecake. A classy steak scene awaits at Benjamin Steakhouse, which also serves a prix fixe menu for Easter. Look for possibilites like oysters, filet mignon, and dry-aged USDA Prime beef. The Village’s Villa Mosconi has been keeping customers happy for over 40 years with authentic Italian cooking. For Easter, roasts of lamb or veal, homemade manicotti and cannelloni, and tiramisu are among the temptations, served at three seatings. 24

facebook.com/cityguideny

David Burke Tavern, from celebrity chef David Burke, showcases a creative, contemporary approach to classic fare. On Easter this year, you’ll find braised lamb, burrata carbonara with spring peas, cured egg yolk, and crispy prosciutto, and pretzel crab cake Benedict. Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steakhouse New York boasts a multi-level space of wood columns, winding staircases, and exposed wine cellars. Look for USDA Prime and dry-aged steaks, fine imported wagyu beef, cold-water lobster tails, and the everpopular crab cake. Upper West Side favorite The Ribbon has arrived in the Theater District in a glamorous setting that pays homage to old New York. Join them on Easter for spit-roasted meats, seafood, Blue Ribbon classics, and a terrific cocktail program to match the cuisine. Famous for USDA prime-aged beef, fresh seafood, fine wine, and elegant desserts, Morton’s The Steakhouse (5th Ave.) is the ideal place for a memorable dinner. This Easter will be no exception; surf ‘n’ turf is always a great option here.

Patsy’s Italian Restaurant is one of the city’s favorite spots, owned and operated in the Theater District by the Scognamillo family since 1944(!). Look for Old World classics to celebrate the season. One of New York’s most spectacular experiences is getting out on the water. Hop aboard the all-glass Bateaux New York for a Hudson River spin, with the Hornblower Bateaux Easter Sunday Bottomless Mimosa Brunch and a special Easter dinner ride. Enjoy the harbor and incredible skyline views aboard NYC’s most luxurious cruising vessel. Both outings will feature live music and plated meals—the luxurious dinner runs from caviar and blinis to seafood towers, lobster bisque, short rib, and mushroom ravioli. Or jump on Spirit Cruises for an Easter brunch cruise, featuring a lush buffet, DJ and dancing, and kid-friendly activities—

including a special appearance by a certain VIP rabbit.Enjoy the day from a unique perspective: out on the water, with the skyline as backdrop.

Broadway in Bloom: From the Small Screen to the Great White Way

Liz Lauren

By GRIFFIN MILLER

The ultimate femme sextet: the wives of Henry VII soar in SIX. Interesting thing about New York City theatre in the spring: close encounters of the celebrity kind are seemingly everywhere. Walking along the street…sitting at the next table (or bar stool)…taking in a concert, show, or sporting event…shopping. Sometimes you I.D. them immediately (“OMG, that’s Beyoncé!”) and in other cases you’re less sure: ”Wasn’t that Cyndi Lauper? I think it was. I’m not sure. What color is her hair these days?” There’s no confusion, though, when you’re holding tickets to a Broadway show featuring a personal favorite. This season, that may well be a star best known for their work on television or in cinema. Take for example Jesse Tyler Ferguson, a theatre vet known for playing Mitchell Pritchett on Modern Family, who’s appearing in the first revival of Richard Greenberg’s Tony-winning play Take Me Out. Another sitcom alum in this spring’s lineup is Emmy winner Debra Messing of Will & Grace fame, returning to the stage in Noah Haidle’s Birthday Candles. Among her costars are fellow-Emmy VIP André Braugher (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) and Enrico Colantoni (Veronica Mars; A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood). Meanwhile fans of Sex and the City and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off may have their hearts set on seeing couple Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker share the stage in the Neil Simon triptych comedy Plaza 50

facebook.com/cityguideny

Suite, just as Downton Abbey followers will want to check out Dan Stevens in Martin McDonagh’s Hangmen—alongside Mark Addy, aka Game of Thrones’ Robert Baratheon. Of course, it wouldn’t be right to partake of the 2020 Broadway season without embracing the most dynamic musicals on the roster, starting with Roundabout Theatre Company’s breathtaking revival of Tony Kushner (book and lyrics) and Jeanine Tesori’s (score) Caroline, or Change. Kushner, who picked up a Tony and Pulitzer Prize for his groundbreaking Angels in America, and Tesori, who received a Tony for her amazing long-running musical Fun Home, will be honored with New Dramatists 2020 Distinguished Achievement Award on May 21st. Notes Emily Morse, New Dramatists’ artistic director, “Through decades of commitment to their art and craft, groundbreaking storytelling, and deep collaborations with other brilliant theatre artists, both Kushner and Tesori have had a transformative effect on the American theatre, and all of us who have been fortunate to sit in their audience are grateful”. Another musical wowing audiences big time is SIX, an awesomely original look at the ultimate femme sextet. Conceived and penned by 20-something Cambridge grads Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss, this happy hybrid of rock concert and history lesson unleashes one show stopper after another

@cityguidenyc

as the resurrected wives of Henry VIII sing it like it was. After some serious UK crazy love, Marlow and Moss crossed the pond, noting, “We are so grateful that we get to share our show with an even wider audience, especially somewhere as iconic as the home of musical theatre—BROADWAY BABY!!” Suffice it to say, NYC audiences are over-the-top smitten, making SIX tickets hard to harness…but way worth the wait! Speaking of musicals with crowd appeal, might I suggest turning your attention Off-Broadway to playwright/lyricist Mark Saltzman’s Romeo & Bernadette: A Musical Tale of Verona and Brooklyn, a hilarious twist on Shakespeare’s quintessential love duo. When, centuries-post-poison, Romeo winds up in circa-1960 Brooklyn, he mistakes Bernadette—a Juliet doppelganger with mob lineage—for his love. But that’s only the tip of the plotline. Mirroring the Bard, insofar as it centers on a couple of warring families (the Penzas and the Del Cantos), this Brooklyn-accented spoof is one part pasta, two parts meatballs, and a spicy serving of loopy goodfellas. Mix into this al dente feast a score cleverly adapted by Steve Orich from a gaggle of vintage Italian melodies and what’s not to like? Molto bene, I miei amici!

ONE FINAL NOTE Little Shop of Horrors, the critically acclaimed Off-Broadway revival starring Emmy winner Tammy Blanchard (Life with Judy Garland; Gypsy) and Tony winner Christian Borle (Something Rotten; Falsettos), recently welcomed Tony and Grammy nominee Jeremy Jordan (Newsies; Supergirl) to the cast for a limited run through May 10th. Jordan plays hapless flower store employee Seymour who finds fame and love when his pet plant Audrey II takes on a life of its own.

Q&A WITH DIANA’S ERIN DAVIE

t

Every so often a new musical comes along predestined to take Gotham by storm and such is the case with Diana (subtitled “A True Musical Story”). Among the stellar company—whose female cast members

include two-time Tony winner Judy Kaye as Queen Elizabeth and Jeanna de Waal in the title role—is Erin Davie, already a Broadway notable for her outstanding performances in Sunday in the Park with George and Side Show). Davie, who plays Camilla Parker Bowles, finds her role as “the other woman” (now “the woman”) in Prince Charles’ life, far more complex and less villainous than most of us remember. The versatile actress sat down with us to tap into her controversial character. GM: How did you happen to get involved with Diana? ED: I was asked to do a weeklong reading of it about two years ago. I thought, “Oh, great team to work with. I want to be in Erin Davie takes on Camilla Parker Bowles in Diana. that room”. GM: What was your opinion of Camilla before taking on the role and how has it changed? ED: I’m always rooting for the underdog. I felt bad for her because she has been so hated in the past. That has only deepened in reading more about her and playing her. I thought she was more uptight before I really started to research her and she actually seems to be a very relaxed, funny person. GM: Can you expand a bit about the character of Camilla as portrayed in Diana? ED: Camilla is a very sympathetic character in our show. The fact is that she couldn’t be with the love of her life for years and years, so if you think about it, it’s actually a good love story. GM: Finally, going into the show, would you describe yourself as an Anglophile? ED: I have for quite awhile been drawn to the UK and the people there. I feel like I would fit in better there in some ways. And I have never been! (I hope they still let me in!)

Authentic Flavors of Spain at Lamano You can immerse yourself in an authentic experience of Spain at Midtown Manhattan’s new Lamano. Spanish folklore plays a big role here, drawing on a trio of key elements: esotericism, gypsies, and sobretaula—the tradition of relaxing at a table after a heavy meal. These aspects combine to make Lamano more than the sum of its tapas: guests experience a full taste of Spain with an incredible chef at the helm, sharing his passion.

Lamano’s newest location is also its largest, holding down a prime spot in Hell’s Kitchen, and following on the success of Chelsea and West Village outposts. A simple, striking logo of a hand is clear to see upon entry, a reminder of how one savors some tapas (Lamano means “by hand” in Spanish, which also references the care with which the food here is made). The handsome, elongated restaurant walls are adorned with artwork

BY LINDA SHERIDAN

by Joan Miró. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming. With stellar options from consulting chef Jose Fuentes (of Madrid’s renowned KultO restaurant), Lamano offers classics from all regions of Spain alongside tempting modern dishes. The moderately priced menu zeros right in on what you came here for: cocktails (martinis and margaritas, a variety of gin and tonics with a choice of strawberry shrub, grape, or fig), homemade white and red sangria, and a generous selection of wine and beer. (You can sit up at the bar in the front, if you just want to grab a drink.) Then it’s on to Spanish tapas, such as chorizo y tetilla (sausage with fondue), coca de carrillera (braised beef cheek), an assortment of cheeses, and delectable croquetas de jamon (ham croquettes) served with a chipotle sauce. These are joined by paella entrees, available in equally delicious choices of seafood or chicken. For dessert you’ll find almond cake and mouthwatering churros, cut and presented with a caramel dip. Don’t miss weekend brunches, with eggs and other breakfast favorites joined by tapas like patatas bravas (crisp potatoes) or red shrimp with garlic, wine, ginger, and soy. Spanish influences make their way to the drinks, which include an orange sherry touch for the house mimosa and a “bloody sherry” with beets, spices, fresh tomato, and lemon Amontillado sherry. Lamano restaurateur Jorge Guzman is also the co-owner of the popular city Mexican restaurants Black Ant, Ofrenda, and Temerario. You’ll find that his mission at Lamano is to immerse people in a culture that leaves them with a love of the drinks, tastes, and music of Spain. This is real food. Made by real manos.

More than the sum of its tapas...

Lamano’s Hell’s Kitchen location is at 688 Tenth Ave. (48 St.), 646-559-0989, lamanonyc.com. Additional locations can be found in Chelsea at 265 W. 20th St. (Eighth Ave.), 212-741-2398 and the West Village at 39 Christopher St. (Waverly Pl.), 212-243-3200. 66
