When November hits, the city’s thoughts turn to pounding pavement and the excitement of the TCS NEW YORK CITY MARATHON. Some 50,000 runners from every corner of the globe will be cheered on by millions across all five boroughs of the city. Get a jump on the running with a visit to the JAVITS CENTER and the TCS NEW YORK CITY MARATHON HEALTH AND WELLNESS EXPO, free and open to the public with more than 100 vendors and exhibitors from Thursday the 3rd through Saturday the 5th. If you’re looking to do some carb loading before or after a run, don’t miss the pasta pros at New York’s favorite Italian restaurants: PATSY’S, LA MASSERIA, DA ROSINA, and BUCA DI BEPPO. For a quicker pick-me-up, the ZIBETTO ESPRESSO BARS have desserts and coffees as only the Italians can do it. Need a massage or foot work before or after the marathon? Look no further than MASSAGE ENVY and SHEVA SPA. And don’t let an injury slow you down: accupressure specialist Injae Choe (646-823-5386, injae.choe@gmail.com) works with athletes to relieve muscular pain and get them back in the race. Village Halloween Parade

10.31

At Halloween in New York there’s something for everyone, from jack-o’lanterns to haunted houses to canine parades. A major highlight is NYC’S 43RD ANNUAL VILLAGE HALLOWEEN PARADE, which goes off at 7pm in Greenwich Village. All those in costume are welcome to join a parade of hundreds of puppets, bands, dancers, artists, and thousands of other New Yorkers in outfits of their own creation — it’s the country’s most wildly creative public participatory event. This year’s theme is REVERIE, inviting paraders to be inspired by their own waking dreams. Participants enter the line-up between 6:30 and 8:30pm on Sixth Ave. at Canal St. For spectators, the route follows Sixth Ave. north from Spring St. to 16th St. 7-10:30pm. halloween-nyc.com

Lower Manhattan’s MUSEUM OF JEWISH HERITAGE—A LIVING MEMORIAL TO THE HOLOCAUST celebrates the lives and traditions of both those who survived and those who perished in the Shoah. The museum’s three-story Core Exhibition doesn’t shy from chronicling the atrocities that took place, but it also serves as a testament to the strength and perseverance of Jewish culture. Rich with artifacts and film clips, MJH is an important institution worth visiting. Current exhibitions include SEEKING JUSTICE: THE LEO FRANK CASE REVISITED, the story of New York’s Leo Frank, lynched and decades later pardoned for the murder of a 13-year-old factory worker in Atlanta in 1915. 36 Battery Pl. Cover Story Life of Pie: Breaking Boundaries with Broadway’s Waitress

Joan Marcus

Well before Hillary Clinton became the first woman to land a major U.S. party’s presidential nomination, the historic sounds of a glass ceiling shattering could be heard throughout Broadway’s nooks, crannies, and rehearsal studios as the musical Waitress announced an allfemale creative team: a Broadway first.

Jessie Mueller bakes up a storm in Waitress.

The groundbreaking quartet of women responsible for whipping Waitress into one of Broadway’s top grossing shows are Tony-winning director Diane Paulus (Pippin; Finding Neverland; Hair); five-time Grammy nominee Sara Bareilles, the musical mastermind behind the show’s Tony-nominated score; Jessie Nelson (Corrina, Corrina; I Am Sam), who deftly adapted the show’s script from Adrienne Shelley’s 2007 film; and Julliard-trained choreographer Lorin Latarro (The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time; Lin-Manuel Miranda’s 21 Chump Street). 26 www.cityguideny.com

BY GRIFFIN MILLER

“I’m thrilled that Waitress is breaking boundaries as the first Broadway musical with book, score, choreography, and direction by a team of women,” notes Paulus, adding, “It’s a historic and long overdue moment for Broadway, and I’m honored to be working alongside such passionate and inspiring women.” The show zeroes in on small-town waitress Jenna (Tony winner Jessie Mueller), whose lousy marriage to abusive husband Earl (William Popp is counterbalanced by 1) her ability to bake amazing pies with names that tend to reflect her life’s cockeyed trajectory (“White Knuckle Cream Pie,” e.g.); and 2) her circle of friends at the diner where she waitresses, especially her fellow waitresses: prickly Becky (Keala Settle) and nerdy Dawn (Jenna Ushkowitz, who you’ll recognize from her role on Fox’s Glee). When Jenna learns she’s pregnant (“Betrayed by My Eggs Pie”), her imperfect day-to-day existence becomes a showdown of emotions and decisions: tell or don’t tell/dump or don’t dump Earl (“My Husband’s a Jerk Chicken Pot Pie”); have an affair/don’t have an affair (“Pursuit of Happiness Pie”) with her married OBGYN (Drew Gehling); enter the National Pie Bake Off in a nearby town (“Jumping Without a Net Bottomless Pie”) that would give her the money to revamp her life (“Getting Out of the Mud Mud Pie”)...or let insecurity stand in the way: “My pies are good but I’m no Sara Lee,” Jenna argues. Indeed, doubts, fears, and imperfections haunt pretty much all the charac-

“Uniquely human and wonderfully uplifting...”

Sept replacement_Layout 1 7/29/16 10:26 AM Pa

ters inhabiting this uniquely human and wonderfully uplifting musical. In the end, it’s a contemporary musical about imperfect people seeking happiness in large or small doses, and the highs and lows they encounter along the way. Prominent in this regard is Dawn’s reticence to forego TV dinners for dating anyone, but eventually gives in to Ogie— played by Tony nominee Christopher Fitzgerald—an endearing customer so smitten by the self-effacing Dawn that he declares his love with full-blown musical comedy panache in the show-stopping first act number “Never Getting Rid of Me.” How could Dawn resist? And while true romance may elude some of the show’s key characters, love does not—which makes Waitress one of those remarkable, heartwarming Broadway success stories, told by women, but with universal appeal. And wait till you get to the final scene...Spoiler alert: it’s a lulu! The Sweet Smell of Temptation Apparently, it’s not enough that diner-inspired towers of luscious-looking pies flank either side of the Brooks Atkinson stage—a heartless study in diet assassination if ever there was one. The provocateur producers thought it best to up the mouth-watering aspects of Waitress by coming up with an olfactory enticement that’s simultaneously evil and delicious...a kind of “surround smell” that ties into pie virtuoso Jenna’s ability to turn out pie after pie from Act I, Scene I through the grand finale. “I wanted that aroma, and I wanted it desperately,” producer Barry Weissler told the New York Times last April, not long after Waitress opened. As it happens, the best way to achieve a genuine pie scent (apple, of course) was to install a convection oven in an area just outside of the orchestra seating area. Bottom line: it’s a good thing you can buy pie during the intermission...seriously. Waitress is playing at Broadway’s Brooks Atkinson Theatre, 256 W. 47th St. For tickets call 877-250-2929 or visit waitressthemusical.com.

New Broadway Musicals: The Rush Is On

Joan Marcus

BY GRIFFIN MILLER

Original cast members Jack Epstein and Liz Larsen return to Broadway smash Beautiful.

Matthew Murphy

The opening round of the new fall-winter production schedule is up, running and zigzagging all over the Big Apple, scorching a wildly diverse path across Broadway stages. For theatregoers, this means that no matter where your heart or preferences lie it’s pretty much a slam-dunk you’ll find your perfect match (no online dating required).

Ben Platt astounds as Dear Evan Hansen moves up from Off-Broadway.

It’s worth noting that, in contrast to the usual checklist of fall previews that veer almost exclusively to drama (with a comedy or two thrown in for good measure), the latest kids to saddle up at the rodeo are musicals. And not just one or two—it’s a full-blown gaggle that includes 58 www.cityguideny.com

A Bronx Tale (culled from Chazz Palminteri’s semi-autobiographical solo show; codirected by Robert De Niro, who costarred with Palminteri in the 1993 film version, and four-time Tony winner Jerry Zaks), starring Tony nominee Nick Cordero; Dear Evan Hansen, an Off-Broadway sell-out that zipped onto Broadway in the flick of an eyelash; Falsettos, a musical farce starring Tony winner Christian Borle alongside Tony nominees Andrew Rannells and Stephanie J. Block; Holiday Inn, an adaptation of the film featuring an Irving Berlin score; In Transit, the very New York, very a cappella original musical; and Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812, a musical adaptation of War and Peace (and another show to blow the lid off of Off-Broadway) starring multi-platinum singer, songwriter, actor, you name it Josh Groban and Denée Benton of Lifetime’s UnREAL. And this heavy-hitting roster doesn’t even take into account the two superstar concerts that will visit Broadway for extremely meteoric runs: Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons On Broadway!, a show that arrives as a must-see and departs in a blaze of memories; and Kristin Chenoweth: My Love Letter to

Broadway, which follows Frankie and his Four into the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre. Chenoweth will be sharing 12 shows with her fans, beginning 11/2 and closing 11/13 (unlike Valli, who signed on for seven performances—10/21 through 10/29). As for Chenoweth’s show, I think it’s safe to expect her to share her most memorable Broadway moments (i.e. any song she’s performed on the Great White Way), as well one or two signature Chenowethian surprises. GETTING FRESH ON BROADWAY

Roxie Hart: Veronica Dunne, known to young audiences as Marissa on the Disney Channel’s K.C. Undercover. When Thomas Wolfe first wrote the words “You can’t go home again,” he clearly had no idea how seductive the Broadway stage can be. Jake Epstein— who originated the role of Gerry Goffin, Carole King’s first husband and writing partner in Beautiful —returns to the part and his Stephen Sondheim Theatre “home,” reuniting with another original cast member: Tony-nominee Liz Larsen, who plays the mother of Carole (Chilina Kennedy). Finally, as of November 1st, fans of Todrick Hall—including his 672,000 Instagram followers—will celebrate the international YouTube sensation’s latest Broadway venture, playing the show stopping “diva” Lola in the Harvey Fierstein-Cyndi Lauper musical Kinky Boots. Hall, who began amassing fans as he made his way to the semifinals in the ninth season of American Idol, replaces Alan Mingo, Jr., who has been with the show since March. And since Hall will soon be a guest judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars, may I offer the Kinky Boots suggestion that, while these boots are made for walking, they’ll also do nicely for some scene-stealing vogueing.

Meanwhile, a number of long-running Broadway musicals are introducing some new and noteworthy players. The Color Purple, for example, recently welcomed Tony and Grammy winner Jennifer Holliday as sexy honky-tonk siren Shug Avery. The latest addition to fiercely popular School of Rock is Broadway fave Jenn Gambatese, known to fans for star turns in All Shook Up and Tarzan. She took over the role of tightly wound principal Rosalie Mullins from Sierra Boggess, who jumped one Andrew Lloyd Webber ship to star in another: the Paris production of The Phantom of the Opera. On the blockbuster Hamilton front, Mandy Gonzalez, who appeared alongside Lin-Manuel Miranda in his first Tony-winning show, In the Heights, picked up the Angelica Schuyler 18th-century gauntlet in September after Tony winner Elise Goldsberry departed to wrap up filming HBO’s The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks and to start work on Netflix’s new Altered Carbon. European Charm Meets New York Sophistication at 57 Belle House BY ETHAN WOLFF Manhattan’s 57th Street is one of the most famous stretches in the world, with its high-powered shopping and elegant residential buildings. For an oasis of hospitality there, point yourself toward 57 Belle House, where you can restore yourself during a daytime outing or relax over a French-American dinner.

A friendly hostess greets guests in front of a long black marble bar. A graceful curve along the pressed-tin ceiling leads to a cozy back room with dark red banquettes. The results are a mix of European charm and New York sophistication. Ambiance is key, from the welcoming staff to thoughtful details like a soundtrack that shifts depending on the mood of the room. (A lunchtime scene might feature upbeat French guitar music, or a laidback classic like “The Girl from Ipanema.”) Menus change with the seasons, with brasserie favorites taking center stage. The house C’est Belle Burger is a favorite, with cooked-to-order beef packing a charcoal sear under caramelized onion, earthy mushrooms, and extra richness from a layer of melted gruyere. On the side, matchstick fries achieve that perfect balance of tender interiors and golden

outsides. Weekend brunches are also big draws, with smoked salmon Benedicts, French toast, and crepes among the popular choices, well matched by Bloody Marys and house sangrias. There are few bargains to be found in Midtown East, but 57 Belle House is that welcome exception. Weekdays, take advantage of a prix fixe lunch ($19) that pairs appetizers like a warm goat cheese salad with beet and walnut and entrées like linguini primavera, or a grilled steak sandwich. The dinner prix fixe ($35) covers three courses, with appetizers like the La Vie Organique Salad with orange, candied walnuts, endive, and arugula, followed by a choice of ratatouille, grilled salmon with chorizo, or chicken Francese. There are even two happy hours (weekdays 4-7 and 9-11), with bites at the bar and beer, wine, and spirit specials. The wine list globetrots successfully, but you may find yourself tempted by the martini glasses chilling behind the bar. Original cocktails include the Midtown Manhattan, which mixes vermouth and German bitters with Rebel Yell Bourbon. That hospitality runs strong here should come as no surprise, given that proprietor Octavian Şuşman is a veteran of 10 successful bistros in Europe. You’ll find his effort at 57 Belle House combines a taste of the Old World with the New York energy of 57th Street.
