A LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER

T

he city’s tourism industry came together Monday, August 30th for the “NYC Tourism Is Back, Start Spreading Your News” cocktail reception. The event was great, with members of the community getting back together after too long apart. City Guide and One World Observatory hosted more than 300 guests, serenaded by Tony- and Grammy-winning actor André De Shields just before his triumphant return to Broadway. We thank our many sponsors for making the evening possible. They really showed their support for New York City’s tourism industry, and also helped us contribute to three worthy charities. I hope you will take a moment to learn more about their latest offerings in these pages. Celebrating 40 years of serving NYC, City Guide provides readers, web searchers, and Facebook followers with resources to discover the best of the city and the media to reach them. I look forward to partnering with you in the future. In these pages you’ll find more information about several initiatives as we prepare for City Guide magazines to be delivered in November to hotels, information centers, kiosks, and other locations across the city where there is a concentration of tourists. We have launched an NYC Tourism Professionals Directory to make it easy to find the right contact in a time of so much industry turnover. Our Facebook Group, Everything To Do NYC, is a great resource for marketing your venue and finding out what residents and visitors are thinking. Our new video series Behind The Experience takes viewers backstage, revealing the secrets of iconic New York City destinations. We remain on top of city events, in our flagship This Week in the City digital article, and its weekly email equivalent. We also keep up with the latest in city tourism news with our weekly Tourism Happenings newsletter. We will rebuild together. Drop me a note if you have any ideas. Yours sincerely,

David L. Miller 6 TOURISM HAPPENINGS MAGAZINE—CITY GUIDE

ity Guide was founded in 1982 and has evolved from a tourism pamphlet to a full-blown magazine to a multi-channel media company that reaches millions of city visitors. As technology has evolved we have evolved, while remaining true to our core mission of developing content that helps locals and tourists get the most out of New York City—whether selecting a Broadway show, finding a tour or an attraction, or choosing a place for dinner. We are fortunate to have two Executive Directors, Eli Marcus and Vincent Timpone, who have been here almost from the start. They have built City Guide and each brings more than 30 years of experience to helping clients reach NYC visitors.

City Guide Magazine. Just ahead of Thanksgiving, City Guides will again appear across the city in all our traditional locations: hotels, information centers, kiosks, street furniture, street boxes, attractions, and other locations where there is a concentration of tourists. The print magazine will continue to be the #1 in-market media for reaching consumers who are making decisions about what to do when they arrive in NYC. City Guide is the only media that reaches 90% of the Manhattan hotels, plus selected hotels in Brooklyn, Queens, and Northern New Jersey. Along with the magazine, City Guide will again be publishing our City Map, with a new version arriving in the spring. CityGuideNY.com. Our print magazine is complemented by our digital presence, which provides coverage of key visitor categories: Sightseeing/Tours | Museums/Culture | Theatre | Restaurants Nightlife/Entertainment | Neighborhoods | City Secrets | Shopping Our flagship This Week in the City article highlights all the latest city goings on, with an email version that goes out every week. NYC TOURISM IS BACK! START SPREADING YOUR NEWS! Cocktail Reception

T

he city’s tourism industry came together Monday, August 30th night for the “NYC Tourism Is Back, Start Spreading Your News” cocktail reception. City Guide and One World Observatory hosted more than 300 guests, following the latest safety protocols. The evening’s special guest was André De Shields, the Tony- and Grammy-winning actor who was just a couple of days ahead of his triumphant return to Broadway’s Hadestown. De Shields serenaded the crowd while amplifying the room’s excitement about the return of Broadway and the broader return of tourism and NYC life.

David Miller, Davler Media CEO, said “It was gratifying seeing so many colleagues in person after too many months of being apart. New Yorkers know the city works best when we all come together. Our tourism community is strong and our city is resilient. The electric atmosphere Monday night really confirms it.” Beneficiaries of the evening were The Actors Fund, the New York City Association of Hotel Concierges Charitable Fund, and the Hotel Association of NYC Foundation. Feedback from guests consistently referred to the professionalism and hospitality of the One World Observatory staff. The setting was spectacular, with a dramatic sunset over the Hudson. In a fitting moment, guests got to see the lights of the city flicker back to life. The perspective, from the top of the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere, provided a perfect context for the beginning of the return of New York City as the number one tourist destination in the nation.

Beyond the photos on the following pages, you can see your friends on Monday night on our video slide show. We’ve also got the photos posted to an album on the NYC Tourism Industry Professionals (NYC TIP)—if you’re not a member yet, now’s a great opportunity to join. City Guide would also like to give special thanks to the sponsors, who not only made the event possible, but also provided the opportunity to support three charities. It was amazing to see the community in person after too long apart. City Guide is looking forward to rolling up our sleeves and getting down to work—NYC TOURISM IS BACK! 14 TOURISM HAPPENINGS MAGAZINE—CITY GUIDE

The Latest Dates and Details for Theater’s Return By Griffin Miller

v ive theatre has returned and won’t be taken for granted again. We’ve got the latest dates and details on Broadway—and Off Broadway—continuously updated on CityGuideNY.com.

L

UP & RUNNING

Up & Running: Aladdin (New Amsterdam Theatre). Like The Lion King, this Disney musical developed from animated origins has been a total crowd-pleaser since it arrived in 2014. In this case, it rises from the hero’s lamp a magically madcap Broadway draw!

Queens Theatre, this unique “funereal” comedy comes to Broadway starring Tony-nominee Norm Lewis (Porgy and Bess), and Michael Urie (Torch Song; Ugly Betty).

(aladdinthemusical.com)

Up & Running: Come From Away (Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre). 2017’s celebrated musical based on the true story that unfolded on 9/11, 2001, when thousands of airline passengers were diverted to Gander, Newfoundland. FYI: Apple’s film version of the musical is also set for release this fall. (comefromaway.com)

Up & Running: Chicago (Ambassador Theatre). It picked up a Tony for Best Musical Revival back in 1997 and has reigned as one of Broadway’s fiercest hits ever since (pandemic notwithstanding). Roxie, Velma, Billy, Mamma, and the cellblock vixens are now poised to sizzle their way back into our hearts! (chicagothemusical.com)

Up & Running: Chicken and Biscuits (Official opening October 10th at Circle in the Square; limited run thru January 2nd). Following a COVID-truncated Off-Broadway debut at the 42 TOURISM HAPPENINGS MAGAZINE—CITY GUIDE

Up & Running: David Byrne’s American Utopia (St. James Theatre). Former Talking Heads frontman Byrne and his enormously talented ensemble of musicians from across the globe return for a limited run thru March 6th, 2022, once again serving up a unique blend of concert and theatricality. Up & Running: Hadestown (Walter Kerr Theatre). 2019’s haunting Tony-winning musical follows the overlapping love stories of Orpheus & Eurydice and Hades & Persephone. The action unfolds in both a stylized New Orleans setting and Hades stomping ground, The Underworld. As for the score, think New Orleans jazz melded with American folk music.

Up & Running: Hamilton (Richard Rodgers Theatre). Visionary Lin-Manuel Miranda’s white-hot historical musical that redefined Broadway. Told through a score of musical theatre, hip-hop, jazz, and R&B, the Pulitzer Prize-winning show has also scooped up Tony, Olivier, and Grammy awards. Act fast. (hamiltonmusical.com)

Up & Running: The Lehman Trilogy (Official opening set for October 14th at the Nederlander Theatre). The acclaimed epic play, tracking three generations of the family who helmed Lehman Brothers investment bank from its beginnings to its apex to its dramatic fall, resumes Broadway performances after sell-out houses in London and New York. (thelehmantrilogy.com) Up & Running: The Lion King (Minskoff Theatre). The longest-running Disney production to grace Broadway—it arrived in November of 1997—this Tony-winning stage adaptation of the animated classic is a musical and visual treasure-trove to be savored and shared generation after generation. (lionking.com) Up & Running: Moulin Rouge! The Musical (Al Hirschfeld Theatre). A gleefully flamboyant stage adaptation of Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 genre-bending film, the acclaimed musical that launched the 2019/2020 season is poised to kick up its decadent heels anew. Up & Running: Is This A Room (Official opening set for October 11th at the Lyceum Theatre). The spellbinding story of a former Air Force linguist who was surprised at her home by the FBI on June 3, 2017. The play’s text is taken from the FBI transcript of her interrogation and finessed into a theatrical thriller/human drama by playwright Tina Satter and actress Emily Davis. Up & Running: Pass Over (August Wilson Theatre). Antoinette Chinonye Nwandu’s acclaimed play, inspired by Waiting for Godot and the Exodus story—and set on an urban street corner—was last seen at Lincoln Center Theater’s LCT3. Masks will also be required for audiences inside the theatre, except while eating or drinking in designated locations. Under the policy, guests will need to be fully vaccinated with an FDA or WHO authorized vaccine in order to attend a show and must show proof of vaccination at their time of entry into the theatre with their valid ticket. “Fully vaccinated” means the performance date must be at least 14 days after the second dose of a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine, or at least 14 days after a single-dose COVID-19 vaccine. Stay with Us With more than two dozen hotels and thousands of rooms waiting for you, it’s easy to make East Midtown your base, no matter what you want to see in New York City. As a bonus, we’re just a short walk from Grand Central Terminal, Times Square, the United Nations, Broadway theaters, and Museum Mile, and if your destination is more than walking distance, the 10 subway lines running beneath our streets will take you almost anywhere.

Get a Taste for East Midtown What are you in the mood for? With more than 100 restaurants within a 10-minute walk, we have what you want. East Midtown boasts two Michelin-starred restaurants. For the absolute best in Scandinavian cuisine, make a reservation at Aquavit (65 East 55th Street), and make Caviar Russe (538 Madison Avenue) your destination for caviar and other seafood and shellfish dishes. Other neighborhood fine-dining favorites include the Mediterranean restaurant Amali (115 East 60th Street); the venerable steakhouse Smith & Wollensky (797 Third Avenue), the French-influenced fare at Copinette (891 First Avenue), the Greek dining at

Nerai (55 East 54th Street) and Isle of Capri (1028 Third Avenue), which has been dishing up authentic southern Italian meals since 1955. Looking for something a bit more casual? If P. J. Clarke’s (915 Third Avenue) was good enough for Sinatra, Jackie O, and many other celebrities since opening its doors in 1884, it’s good enough for you. Other hotspots include the popular Irish pub Bloom’s Tavern (208 East 58th Street), where they host an annual Bloomsday celebration honoring the inspiration behind the bar/ restaurant: author James Joyce and his novel, Ulysses. And if you’re not ready for a meal, we’ve got your nosh covered, too. Visitors from across the globe make a point to stop into Ess-A-Bagel (831 Third Avenue) for their “Authentic New York Bagel” fix.

The design showrooms can be so specialized that we even have two shops devoted to selling “just” one type of product: Just Bulbs (237 East 58th Street) sells light bulbs and lighting accessories, and Just Shades (230 East 59th Street) sells lamp shades. And, yes, both stores were gently teased on the old David Letterman Show for their singular devotion to their lines.

Indulge in some Retail Therapy No shopping trip in East Midtown is complete without a visit to Bloomingdale’s (1000 Third Avenue), the national flagship covering a full city block. So please stop, and shop… but don’t use all your energy there, because we have a lot more to offer. Insiders know that East Midtown Manhattan is an international destination for home furnishings, décor, and antiques, with a concentration in the blocks between East 57th and East 60th Street, which roughly defines the Decorative Arts District. Of particular note are two design centers: the Decoration & Design (D&D) Building (979 Third Avenue) and the Architects & Designers (A&D) Building (150 East 58th Street).

But we’re not just Bloomingdale’s and home décor! Here you can explore watches and fine jewelry, the latest in audio technology, cutting-edge fashion, and even the world-famous Hammacher Schlemmer (145 East 57th Street), a go-to destination for electronics and unique gadgets and gifts.

Enjoy our Culture Broadway is great, but it isn’t the only theatre in New York City. East Midtown is home to 59E59 Theaters (59 East 59th Street), an Off-Broadway theater that brings dynamic programming to its three stages and hosts several popular annual festivals. Theatre lovers will also want to check out the York Theatre Company (619 Lexington Avenue), which develops new musicals and rediscovers under appreciated gems from the past. You can also travel back in history at the Mount Vernon Hotel Museum & Garden (421 East 61st Street), which dates back to 1799. And as befits a community with a strong presence of the arts and artists, the Society of Illustrators (128 East 63rd Street) offers year-round exhibits and programs.

We’re waiting to welcome you to East Midtown. Experience the hundreds of stores, restaurants, and other sites we don’t have room to mention by visiting www.EastMidtown.org. We’re looking forward to seeing you soon!
