Group Project Fall 2012 Time Span: 2 weeks Square Footage: 12,240 sq ft Located in a historic campus, the Cerebrum will be the classroom of the future higher education that embraces the new culture of learning and supports diverse ways of thinking. As right-brain thinkers and left-brain thinkers come together in this space as a ‘collective’, they can collaborate and contribute their different ways of thinking. The space will promote ‘whole-brain thinking’ and the space will reflect different thinking styles. The left-dominant thinking will be represented by space that is more quiet, promotes individual and more private study, and has a strong organizational grid. The right-dominant thinking will be represented by space that promotes social group work, collaboration, and is more free-flowing and organic. Where the two zones meet, a central ‘whole-brain’ thinking zone emerges that is flexible, adaptable, and supports aspects of both types of thinkers.

The University of Florida Career Resource Center (CRC) plans to rehabilitate and upgrade its existing facility. The project includes rebranding of CRC and redesigning its spaces to reect the center's core values while providing spaces that better support its activities in career development of students. Prior to concept design, pre-design research is conducted, including benchmark analysis, behavioral and physical observations, and staff interviews.

Hotel Lobby Lighting Design: A Cross-Cultural Comparison Keywords: Lighting, Hotel, Culture, America, China Hotel, especially hotel lobby, is an environment that travelers with different cultural backgrounds come together day after day. Atmospheric elements in a hotel lobby have been found to influence guest experience. As one of these elements, hotel lobby lighting plays an important role in creating the overall impressions. So far, no study has compared the effects of lighting on guests with different cultural backgrounds in a hotel lobby setting. Base on this reason and the lack of understanding in light contrast, the present study was conducted to identify the effects of hotel lobby lighting with two correlated color temperature (CCT) (warm and cool) and two luminance contrast (uniform and non-uniform) on emotional states (arousal and pleasure), lighting preferences, behavioral intentions (loyalty behaviors and approach/avoidance), and perceived hotel image by comparing American and Chinese cultures. The experimental research was conducted by utilizing computationally rendered images of a hotel lobby and online survey tools. A total of 102 responses were collected from American subjects, and a total of 120 responses were collected from Chinese subjects who live in China.
Thesis
The results identified the significant impact of light contrast, and the constant interactions of culture by contrast on arousal, pleasure, and behavioral intentions. The effect of light color was negligible. While American subjects express pleasure and loyalty under both uniform and non-uniform lighting conditions, Chinese subjects felt more pleased and were more willing to revisit, recommend, and stay in the hotel under uniform lighting than non-uniform lighting. In contrast, the two cultures agreed on lighting preference. Both American and Chinese subjects preferred warm/uniform lighting the most and cool/non-uniform lighting the least. A possible reason might be the changing trend in hotel lobby lighting. This study also confirmed the associations between lighting attributes and perceived hotel image.

Designing a surface-mounted luminaire for an airport counter
THE WOVEN LIGHT
The design concept of the Woven Light comes from the woven texture of materials. It uses an OLED panel woven between the metal framing, which is dynamic yet elegant. OLED is a promising light source, which gives out diffused light. It has a variety of color options, and it is dimmable. The Woven Light uses OLED for its exibility, durability, and sustainability. The Woven Light is a surface-mounted luminaire. It provides general lighting to airport counter area, and provides task lighting to airport staff behind the counter. It can also be used in other counter spaces, such as ofďŹ ce or hotel reception.
