Inductees for 2016 include:

Ken Carstensen - Class of 1970 During Ken’s time at Start he was on student council, the Shield yearbook staff, and numerous service groups, all while lettering in three sports (football, basketball, and baseball). He remained successful in sports, gaining a full scholarship to Ohio University, graduating in 1974 with a degree in business. He went on to receive a MBA at the University of Toledo, and eventually became a part owner in C.J. Schneider Mfg. Company. He remained a supporter of Start High School, Ohio University and other numerous community causes before passing away in 2013 due to pancreatic cancer. Mary Mikesell Cianci - Class of 1973 While a busy student at Start, Mary learned her most important skills from her mother, especially that of sewing. Feeling college wasn’t for her, Mary started working in the alteration department at the Lion store, making the clothes look great on the customers. After having two sons, she started her own alteration business in the basement of her West Toledo home, building a great following over 5 years, eventually buying her own store, Sew ’n’ Such, on Sylvania Avenue. She has been in business there for the last 25 years doing mainly formal and wedding dress alterations. Mel Harbaugh - Class of 1965 Mel, a 1965 Start graduate, served for four years in the United States Air Force from 1966-1970 in Tucson, Arizona. After his service, he spent four years as a tool and die apprentice and obtained his journeyman card. He then worked as a manufacturing representative for Harbaugh –Walworth Association. In 1989, Mel, along with his father and brother, bought Toledo Molding and Die where he served as Vice-President until his retirement in 2005. Mel has served on several committees throughout the years, his latest being Wreaths Across America which he started in 2013 at Toledo Memorial Park. Ronald McCracken - Class of 1969 While at Start, Ron played football his first three years, as well as being vice president of his sophomore class, a member of the Quill and Dagger Literary Society, and the Junior Council on World Affairs. Following high school he received his undergraduate degree from the University of Toledo, and then graduated cum laude from The Ohio State University College of Law. In 1988 Ron started his own business, RJM Waste Equipment Company which eventually had revenues of $22 million, and was inducted into the National Waste and Recycling Association Hall of Fame in 2010. Ron currently is the founder and president of RJM Associates, a marketing, strategy, and relationship development firm focusing on the waste industry. Keith Jordan - Class of 1991 Keith, a 1991 Start graduate, serves as V.P./Director of Development for JLI Vision Outreach in Toledo. His career has included many successful years at Ford Motor Company in Maumee. Upon leaving Ford, Keith has devoted his life to addressing the needs of at-risk youth . He has developed an in school mentoring program for elementary students with Toledo Public Schools, and has partnered with the Lucas County Juvenile Justice Department. He has also established an employment service for young adults called the Men of JOEB helping young adults gain work experience. Thomas Ross - Class of 1966 Tom has worked in law enforcement since 1969, starting out as a foot patrolman for two years and serving another two years in a paddy wagon. In September 1973, he was selected to join the detective bureau working on burglary and robbery cases, moving to homicide in November of 1975 until his retirement in May of 1999. Since then, Tom has worked in the cold case unit of the Lucas county Prosecutor’s office for the last 15 years. Gail Schwind - Class of 1974 While at Start HS, Gail was involved in many activities, including cheerleading, track, student government, mat maids, hall guard, pep club, and office assistant. She was also crowned homecoming queen the year of her graduation. She loved and excelled in science which led to her studies in radiologic sciences at the St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center X-ray program, also associated with the University of Toledo. Gail has just finished her 41st year as a radiologic technologist and is still performing X-rays. She also sits on the Start HS Hall of Fame Committee. Charlie Shapiro - Class of 1966 Dr. Shapiro, a member of the class of 1966, is a Doctor of Health Science and practicing physical therapist in Knoxville, Tennessee, with 40 years of experience in physical therapy and rehabilitation. Charlie obtained his Doctorate degree from the University of St. Augustine after studying at Miami Dade College, the University of Toledo, BGSU, and New York University graduate school. Dr. Shapiro has also designed exercise equipment, ergonomic seating, and clinical documentation software. Charlie has also spent time as a lecturer and faculty member at several universities, as well as being a published author for textbooks and medical journals.
