MARKET 2010

„THE MARKET“ DIPLOMA PROJECT was thought of as a multi-layered building, both functionally and configurative. It replaces an existing market trying to solve many of its problems, mainly hygine and accesibility, but also it tries to solve circulation and loisir problems within the neighborhood it is situated in. Its peculiar layout with a system of plazas creates an inner space that can be used in many ways: market during the day | public space (loisir) during the night. The building houses shops, plazas, gardens, offices for rent, a motel for the sellers, wharehouses, parkings and bars. Last but not least it provides a revigorating new image to boost its bleak sorroundings.

_according to the “local urbanism regulations of Bucharest” and “the general masterplan of Bucharest” _1 the site is type M3 - “mixed subzone with continuous or discontinuous buildings with a maximum height of P+4 floors”; _2 in the case of the public buildings built separately the minimal area is 1000 sqm and the main facade of at least 30 m; _3 the public equipment will be withdrawn from the alignment of at least 10 m or will be put along the alignment depending on the function and the existing norms; _4 the public building will be built in separate volumes, the withdrawal from the site limits will be of at least a half of the height in that area, but not less that 5 m; _5 there will be identified, protected and kept during the construction all important trees over 4 m in height and the trunk diameter over 15 cm; in the case of cutting down a tree ten more trees will be planted in the public areas nearby; _6 60% maximum usage of terrain surface (POT) with maximum 75% of the usable surface covered by at most 2 story high buildings (8m) for commercial activities, expositions, parkings; _7 total area usage coefficient (CUT) 2.5

M A R K E T _the sun _Bucharest has 2157 direct sunlight hours per year; _an average photovoltaic panel outputs 300 W/h at full capacity (20% efficiency); _this means at least 647kW/year, but the panels work with indirect light also; _solar heating panels: can heat up to 1000L per day each: 15-20 panels should cover the consumption of the whole building;

M A R K E T _the shade _the way the inner plazas are covered by a metal-glass structure is susceptible to produce a very unpleasant green-house effect during summer | that is why specially designed shading panels have been added | the panels are opaque during summertime and transparent during wintertime; _also there are some other totally opaque panels perpendicular on the first type, for shading during the afternoon and sunset (W-E) while the initial panels provide shading towards the south;

_winter lighting diagram the angle of the shading panels’ elements is 25 degrees which coincides with the sun’s angle in that period, thus allowing perfect illumination during winter;

_summer shading diagram the angle of the panels and the angle of the panel’s elements combined offer perfect shading in summer | lighting is possible by reflection between the panel’s elements (reflective glass);

ISOVER CONTEST 2010

The ISOVER contest of 2010 featured a reconversion of an old warehouse in the Pantin suburbia of Paris. The challenge was to keep the overall shape of the building while giving it a new look and a new function. We thus opted for a simple but effective facade sistem consisting of vertical blinds. They protected both the walkways on the building’s exterior and the building’s walls from overheating while still providing sufficient daylight inside. The vertical blinds have an intelligent rotating system that keeps the blinds “shut” towards the sun in summer and warm months and “open” in winter and cold months.

As overall image the original and recognizable box shape was preserved but it was added color in order to bring the area to life and thus become an icon of the area. The function chosen was that of a community center with inner functions varying from auditoriums to exhibitions and various classes such as painting, sculpting and music. 1st place National Competition Team: Vladimir Moldovanu, Alexandru Hoffman, David Stancu

RESIDENTIAL C O M P L E X the

2009 This project before the diploma was part of the internship mandatory in the final year. The internship was at Bogoescu Arhitectura si Urbanism S.R.L. (www.bogoescuarhitectura.ro) where I worked in a small team given the task to prepare the first stage of a residential complex project. The complex stretched between two large bulevards in Bucharest and also compsed of an additional intended office building. The work included drawing up the apartments, distributing them in accordance with the percentages given by the client, facades, plans, 3D model, renderings and final presentation.

M U S E U M 2009

The Museum project was intended as a historical area insertion excercise. The site is located on one of Bucharest main boulevards: Calea Victoriei, and sorrounded by a historically protected area. The project asked to make a museum of our own choice on that particular site. I chose to make a museum of the city of Bucharest, portraying the developement of the settlement, its particularities, and that can also house conferences and exhibitions. One of the strongpoints of the project is the inner garden, a small green oasis within the city; protected by the building itself and the Stirbei palace towards Calea Victoriei. The garden is both central but intimate.

The image of the building is neutral as not to interfere with the area, and retreated from the street in oder to give space for viewing the nearby buildings. The volume’s shape is conditioned by the nearby buildings, being attached to their blind perimeter walls. In this way the shape is the result of the area, and the whole building is in perpetual communication with its surroundings.

CONTEST 2009

The ISOVER contest of 2009 required the development of an office building that would house the ISOVER headquarters for the respective participants’ countries.

The solution became a compact form, with an inner atrium used as an exhaust for the used air and also as a light source for the inner spaces.

We chose in Bucharest a site in an area that is being remodeled from an industrial site into a business center. The building was supposed to house up to 60 employees and, of course be self-suffcient within the PASSIVE HOUSE standards.

1st place National Competition

Our answer was a compact shape, with natural ventilation through the CANADIAN WELL system and GREEN BUFFERS on the facade (small greenhouses), part of its energy being produced in situ from the roof of the parking lot. Also the rainwater is being reused.

TOWER 2009

This project is placed in a zone in Bucharest that is undergoing extensive reorganizing: a new suspended highway is being built and the nearby industrial area has been reorganized as an office center. The most important aspect of this project was the relationship between the tower, the low-rise apartment blocks nearby, the current street, the river and the future suspended highway. The solution proposed consisted of a main tower placed at the intersection of several perspective axes, and of several low-rise annexes that would house conference rooms, galleries, exhibitions, shops ans restaurants.

Also, a key aspect was the auto circulation as the whole area had to be accessed and evacuated quickly during the rush hours. The facade is a Mondrian-like composition, made out of colored perforated metal sheets, that have the role to filter the light, keeping the heat outside while still allowing light inside.

WAREHOUSE 2008

This was a conversion project for the Technical University of Construction in Bcharest form a warehouse to a modern laboratory. The challenge was to create a whole new interior partitioned in order to fullfill the needs of the client and to accomodate the various installations needed, while keeping the perimetral structure intact. Also a new facade was needed both for insulations and exterior image.

ART SCHOOL 2008

The National Arts University organized a contest for an extension of the building, given the fact that it is located in a „protected area“ and that it has a „protected building“ on its site. They needed new spaces for classes and offices, and a new image of the institution. Our answer was an organic shape that stretched from the actual building and ecnompassed the whole site, thus creating a new image towards the city, and new spaces in the courtyard.
