01 PDX TERMINAL BALANCING + EXPANSION Portland International Airport - Port of Portland This project includes the expansion of Concourse E and improvements to the terminal building that will balance the passenger demands on the north and south sides of the facility at Portland International Airport. As part of extending Concourse E, new ground loading facilities and spaces to serve airline operations will be designed. I was brought onto the project during Construction Documents to oversee the documentation of the walkway structures that extend east of the new concourse. My duties have included Revit modeling, drawing and sheet management, technical detailing and consultant coordination.

02 STRAND AGRICULTURE HALL RENOVATION Oregon State University Strand Agriculture Hall is a 100 year old classroom building located at the core of the Oregon State University campus and within the designated OSU Historic District. In 2011, a renovation effort was initiated to restore Strand as an important campus building and home to the College of Agricultural Sciences. Central to the renovation were seismic, energy, accessibility and finish upgrades and the addition of a new portico at the west entrance. Historic Preservation principles were engaged throughout to retain the original character while providing for modern use and function. Wherever possible, existing materials were restored in place or repurposed for continued use in the building. I joined the Strand team at the start of Schematic Design upon the completion of the Pre-Design phase. I was fully engaged from the beginning, working closely with the project architect through Construction Documents and then leading the CA effort to the end of construction. My duties included Revit modeling, drawing management and production, detailing, design studies, digital and hand rendering, code and product research, permit preparation and extensive coordination with the client, consultants and contractor.

03 OUTDOOR ADVENTURE PAVILION Portland Children’s Museum The Outdoor Adventure Pavilion was designed in close collaboration with Mayer-Reed’s landscape vision to create a simple, site-inspired structure for informal gatherings, outdoor classes, performances and events. Located at the base of the steeply sloping hillside, the greenroof shelter serves as a visual and acoustic backdrop for the open air amphitheater and provides activity space, restrooms, a preparation counter and storage. My role started in Schematic Design and carried through to the end of construction. I created and managed the Revit model and construction drawings, prepared all presentation material, developed design options closely with the project architect, and lead the Construction Administration effort.

04 OUTDOOR ADVENTURE TREE PODS Portland Children’s Museum In addition to the Pavilion, the original scope of the Outdoor Adventure project included an Observation Deck and three Tree Pod Structures. Creating a sense of enclosure and discovery, while still maintaining visibility and access for all, was an integral aspect of the Tree Pod design. Wood-clad skins and railings were designed around willow supported frameworks, providing three varying degrees of enclosure: open interaction at pathways, semi-enclosed transitions at thresholds and areas of undisturbed play within. The articulation of the cedar shake skin was designed to reinforce visual openness and encourage unique vantages at each of the three pods by opening up to the natural elements: sky, meadow and water. The project team was small, so I worked closely with the project architect/manager on most aspects of the project. During design, we worked through design options by hand and with digital models and animations to study the forms and constructability methods.

05 ZABEL HALL RENOVATION Eastern Oregon University Zabel Hall is the primary classroom building for EOU’s College of Business and College of Education. The comprehensive renovation balanced deferred maintenance and system upgrades with improved teaching and learning spaces. Classrooms were reconfigured to incorporate both traditional and modern instructional tools and provide for flexibility in teaching. The transformation included a revitalized building entry, full window replacement, and the addition of a student commons and informal learning spaces to encourage more interaction between students and faculty. I worked on Zabel Hall from Schematic Design through the end of Construction Documents, producing drawings, details, renderings, design options and presentation material for the project. I also assisted the CA effort, making site visits and coordinating owner, consultant and contractor correspondence.

The Stark’s Pre-development Study, funded by a Portland Development Commission (PDC) grant, included a half-block mixed use commercial building, a quarter-block apartment building, and an adjacent quarterblock parking lot. Two partial-block lots to the north, owned by Stark’s and PDC, were also considered. Preliminary structural evaluation, architectural design and financial analysis services were conducted by the project team. The scope of the study included assessing the site and existing structures and exploring the potential for renovation, upgrades and new development on the subject properties.

07 MSU THESIS PROJECT Gallatin Field Airport 2025-2050 “The physical and perceptual redefinition of threshold subverts divisionary necessity and propagates opportunity for social experience.� The intent of this thesis was to investigate the potentials at the edge conditions of the current airport model by challenging the location and design of distinct airport thresholds: entrance, security and gate. Current dualistic relationships (inside/outside, secure/ non-secure, arrivals/departures, passenger/non-passenger, local/ tourist, public/non-public, etc.) were studied. The idea that airports have the opportunity to change and evolve when the dividing line is reconsidered was argued. Findings included: 1) Redundant uses and activities signal a potential for reinterpreted thresholds. 2) The blending of boundary does not inherently infer singular space, but rather allows for greater freedom of varied experience. 3) Where division is necessary, there is opportunity to express it’s role in the system. 2009 First Place Outstanding Thesis Award Montana State University School of Architecture

08 OREGON RAIL HERITAGE CENTER Oregon Rail Heritage Foundation Located across the street from OMSI, the new Oregon Rail Heritage Center includes room to restore and maintain three historic steam locomotives and their tenders, with space for machinery, offices, a conference room and a viewing area for visitors to watch activities on the shop floor. This watercolor rendering was initiated during design to serve as a fundraising tool for the foundation. I worked closely with the client and design team to capture both the details of the new structure and the excitement of Oregon’s railroad history. 2012 Juror’s Award - 27th International Exhibition American Society of Architectural Illustrators

09 NATIONAL GUARD READINESS CENTER Polk County, Oregon Home to the Oregon Army National Guard’s 160 Engineers, the proposed 40,000 SF complex included an armory, classrooms, offices, and a large drill space, as well as public areas such as a central hall that the surrounding community could access when the Guard isn’t using the facility. I assisted the team during a fast-paced proposal phase by producing this watercolor rendering to convey the design concept for the building. The layout for this piece was established from a quick Revit model and hand sketches.

10 FOREIGN STUDIES ILLUSTRATIONS Zacatecas & Guanajuato, Mexico In 2007, I joined a group of 12 MSU students for a Foreign Studies semester in Mexico and throughout parts of Central America. Hand sketching and painting were integral to the trip and ranged from quick observations to formal paintings. The watercolors here were done in the field, requiring a full day of graphite layout and another for painting. 11 MISCELLANEOUS ILLUSTRATIONS Design + Presentation Hand illustrations have been a core part of my architectural design process from my first year in architecture school, and they continue to hold a place in my work now as a professional. Whether from observation or rendered from design drawings and 3D models, capturing a scene by hand never fails to reveal something more about a place than was immediately apparent. The renderings here are a sampling of the pieces I’ve done over the last 12 years. 12 BUTTE HERITAGE CENTER ILLUSTRATIONS Butte, Montana The Butte Heritage Science & Technology Center, sited above the Berkeley Pit in Butte, Montana, aimed to be a focal point for the entire region. The project encompassed community park areas, a museum, educational space and a community memorial. Multiple design studies were explored during the course of the project. In addition to assisting with the Revit model and design drawings, I worked closely with the design principal on watercolor renderings to convey his vision. These studies were extremely quick and relyed on an iterative process.
