Well, you have decided you would really like to learn how to sew, but what on earth would be a good first project? If you look through a pattern book at the fabric store, or do some surfing for patterns, you will see a truly enormous selection of patterns. You can get patterns not only for clothing, but also for craft items and home decorator projects galore! It may seem like a daunting task to choose your first project. Let me give you some recommendations. Your very first project should be something that has predominately straight seams. This is the easiest sewing technique to master, and one of the most used. You want your first project to be successful so you will be motivated to learn more complicated techniques. I would also warn against choosing a knit fabric for your first project, as knits are much harder to work with than woven fabrics. You don't want your first project to be frustrating, so choose carefully. If you are an absolute newcomer to the sewing world, I would recommend a project such as: Pillows Short curtain panels Simple tote bags Skirt or shorts with elastic waist

I would suggest that you stay away from clothing for your first project, especially if you have never sewn a stitch before. Clothing pieces, no matter what you choose, will have more complicated directions and techniques than a simple pillow or curtain panel. This is certainly not to say you cannot make a garment for your first project. If you really want to make a piece of clothing, stick to a "beginner" pattern. These patterns have much more detailed instructions, and if you follow them carefully, you should do just fine. If you have done a little sewing, and are familiar with some sewing terms, but are still a beginner, you could choose any of the above items or maybe something like these: Shaped window treatment such as a swag Longer curtain panels Patterns that are rated as "beginner" or "easy"

A purse or tote with pockets

You want to create something with your first sewing efforts; that is why you are learning how to sew. But the real object of your first few projects should be to get the "feel" of working with your machine, to learn to begin and end seams correctly, and to master some simple finishing techniques. Have fun and give yourself permission to experiment. Your first project doesn't have to be perfect! Sewing is not hard to learn at all. You just have to work step-by-step through a few basic projects and you will be amazed at how soon you will be sewing anything you set your mind to. Have FUN while you learn how to sew!
