Welcoming home a hero Soldier returns from Afghanistan By Elizabeth Hamilton Staff Writer
Michael Neighbours said he couldn’t have made it through a recent yearlong tour of duty in Afghanistan without the support of his family and the Dawson County community. That support was on full display July 24, as a patriotic, flag-waving crowd of hundreds lined the streets of Dawsonville to welcome Neighbours home. In honor of his efforts and service to the country, the Dawson County Chamber of
Commerce along with the Veterans Affairs of Dawson County, organized the homecoming event that was fit for a hero. “He is one of the few natives to come back,” said Wayne Watkins, local vietnam veteran and state president of the Vietnam Veterans Association. “I am glad to see the community out doing this (welcoming home one of their own from the military),” he added. “Patriotism is the most important part of welcoming home a solider.” Neighbours, 21, was over-

whelmed by the reception. He thanked everyone for their support, which he said helped him make it through his tour. “I am so lucky and blessed to have a loving family and loving community,” he said. “God bless you all. This homecoming means more to me than you will ever know.” A Dawsonville native, Neighbours will be home until Aug. 23, before going back to Fort Hood, Texas, where he is based, or possibly Fort Knox. Plan now to be a part of upcoming events This is the time of year to look at your calendar and be ready to take part in the chamber events that will help get the exposure that your business needs. Your various committees are working very hard
to pull these events together for the membership. In each of these you have the opportunity to network and grow your business, as well as that of your fellow chamber member. Let’s take a look at
what is coming up. Right around the corner is the reverse raffle on Aug. 27. This is a major fundraiser for the chamber and is not closed to just the membership. Anyone who buys a ticket can come and
join in on the fun. Each ticket holder gets two admission tickets, which include food and beverage. We will count down 350 tickets, stopping on every 25th ticket to give away a door prize. When we get to
the final 10, those ticket holders come up on stage and work their way down to No. 350 who walks away with $10,000.

Chamber brings leaders to the membership ❞
The membership council has a terrific line-up of speakers for the remainder of the 2009 membership meetings. I hope you have already made your reservation for the Aug. 13 meeting when U.S. Congressman Nathan Deal will be with us. I know we all are anxious to hear from him on the many issues that congress is addressing on our behalf in Washington. In September, Georgia Insurance Commissioner John Oxendine will be our guest speaker. Commissioner Oxendine’s office deals with one of the most important business issues, insurance.
The chamber provides opportunities, such as this, for you to have a voice locally, statewide and at the national level as well.
❞ Linda Williams Bruce Lucia, president of Kroger’s Atlanta Division, is our speaker in October. Mr. Lucia is a leader for one of the most respected companies.
Kroger is not only a great business model, but a company that empowers its employees to become involved at the local level in the communities they serve. Our community has certainly been blessed with the leadership provided by Kroger. Georgia Secretary of State Karen Handel will join us in November for
our last membership meeting of 2009. Her office is also responsible for many functions that affect our businesses. As you have noted, three of our upcoming speakers are also candidates for the office of governor. Now more than ever, we each need to be aware
of the issues facing our elected officials and educate ourselves and become involved. The chamber provides opportunities, such as this, for you to have a voice locally, statewide and at the national level as well. I anticipate a great turnout for each of these membership meetings. It is very important that you R.S.V.P. ahead of time so that our caterer at the
Lakeview Center may adequately prepare for each event. I urge you to R.S.V.P. as soon as you receive the first e-mail reminder for each meeting. I hope to see you at a chamber event soon. Won’t you join us?

Reverse raffle tickets on sale now By Elizabeth Hamilton Staff Writer
One of the most anticipated events of the Dawson County Chamber of Commerce for the past seven years, the Reverse Raffle will be held on Aug. 27 and is an event that Dawson County residents will not want to miss. Only 350 tickets at $100 each will be sold for this year’s raffle drawing party, which gives ticket holders the chance to win $10,000 cash. Every 25th number drawn will win a prize equal to or more valuable than the ticket price. “The event location will be on the ticket,”
said the Chamber Membership Director Pam Hamalainen. “When you purchase the ticket, you’ll find out where the drawing party will be.” Purchasing one ticket allows two people to enter the party. “This is the most exciting event we have,” said Linda Williams, president of the chamber. “It is one of our most important fundraisers, but more than that, it is an event that is enjoyable for everyone,” she continued. “It is not just your ordinary fundraiser with a raffle that you may or may not win, it is an entertaining event in which attendees can network with fellow resi-
dents and business representatives, as well as possibly walk away with a valuable prize.” Tickets are available at the chamber and through the chamber’s board of directors. You can also stop by Roger Slaton’s State Farm Office at the intersection of Hwy. 53 and Hightower Road to purchase a ticket from Margaret Bowen. The chamber accepts all major credit cards, cash and checks. Proceeds from the raffle support many chamber initiatives throughout the year. For more information on the chamber’s reverse raffle, call (706) 2656278.

Sponsors needed for upcoming business expo Event planned for Oct. 6 By Elizabeth Hamilton Staff Writer
The Dawson County Chamber of Commerce will host its ninth annual Business Expo, an event designed to give local residents a glimpse at the many businesses in Dawson County and give Dawson County Chamber of Commerce Business members a networking forum, from 4-7 p.m. Oct. 6.
The chamber is currently seeking sponsors for the event, which offers 70 businesses the opportunity to showcase their products and services to hundreds of potential customers. “As a sponsor, you will receive prominent exposure before, during and after the event,” said Linda Williams, president of the chamber. “Being a sponsor is a very affordable way to bring expo-
sure to your business.” As a $500 sponsor you will receive: your company logo printed on all flyers and promotional advertising, your company’s name will be in all press releases, your company’s table will be prominently placed at the expo with sponsorship signage, your company will be announced as a sponsor over the loud speaker repeatedly during the event, and a representative of your company will be interviewed over the loudspeaker during the event. Williams added that
the expo will have a business resource area for entrepreneurs and future entrepreneurs that can answer any business startup questions. Last year’s event featured more than 70 booths that included donated door prizes, and a vast amount of information and delicious samples from a variety of local restaurants and caterers. “We are excited about and looking forward to the event this year,” Williams said. “We are confident this year will be just as
successful as last year.” All chamber members are invited to participate in the annual event. Admission to the public at

took the plunge in Dawsonville. “There were no places in Dawson County to purchase wedding gowns,”
she said, adding she is pleased to be able to serve the North Georgia region with their wedding needs.
Christi’s also offers a variety of formal accessories, like tiaras and jewelry, and is the only tuxedo rental in Dawson
County. A selection of formal gowns for all ages is available for purchase, in addition to a rack of gently worn formal dresses available through consignment. The formal wear shop opened earlier this year and celebrated it’s opening with Dawson County Chamber of Commerce members July 28 by hosting the organization’s Business After Hours event. The chamber welcomes Christi’s Bridal and Formal Wear to the community and would also like to thank the following local businesses that donated door prizes for the event: Bella Sol Salon, Anidewehi at Forrest Hills Day Spa, Paul Thomas Chocolates, Yorkie Doodle Embroidery and Annette Walden of Painted Lady Enterprises. Chamber members are encouraged to attend the monthly Business After Hours in support of other local businesses, as well
tainment and my favorite part ... where we honor a local public service hero for going above the call of duty to serve their community. As well, the staff at Amicalola Falls always adds to the event with hayrides, wild animal events and terrific hospitality.
The Business Expo follows on Oct. 6 at the Lakeview Center. Come show what your business has to offer and enjoy great food and prizes as you network with others. This is one that I make sure that my business is in every year, as it sets the pace for holiday
selling for my company. The following week, the membership has something new for you. If you were at last month’s luncheon, you got a small sample of what the chamber has to help grow your business. Kristie and her team have put together a “boot camp” in order to get the
word out, and to go into detail, as to the many facets of chamber membership. It will be held from 9 a.m. until noon, Oct. 13 at the Bowen Center for the Arts. Refreshments will be served and you can come and enjoy the current show at the center as

Many little girls begin planning their wedding with their first childhood crush. The cake, the venue, the wedding party and of course — the dress. A new bridal and formal shop in Dawsonville can take the hassles out of planning one of the most important days in a woman’s life by offering a variety of wedding services, including a beautiful selection of some of the most elegant dresses in North Georgia. Christi’s Bridal and Formal Wear, located at 66 South Dawson 400 Center Lane, Suite 235, is a one stop wedding shop, according to owner Christi Franklin. Her father also runs a jewelry store downstairs to make that special day even simpler. Franklin said she always dreamed of owning and operating a dress boutique and recently

Cover to Cover Used Books opens to eager readers By Michele Hester Staff Writer
Until a few weeks ago, the closest used book stores were in Cumming or Gainesville. Now with the opening of Cover to Cover Used Books on Grant Road, readers can find just about any literary genre they are looking for at a great discount here in Dawson County. Patricia Moyer opened Cover to Cover Used Books last month after over a year of research into the used book market. “There was a lot of community interest,” she said. Cover to Cover Used Books offers thousands of reading selections for
children, teens and adults. With everything from classic novels to mystery, fiction, sci-fi and romance, Moyer hopes she can fill the area’s used book store void. “The community needed something like this,” Moyer said, adding especially in today’s economic climate. Cover to Cover accepts used books in exchange for credit at the store. Credit consists of 25 percent of the book’s MSRP. Cover to Cover Used Books is located at 42 Grant Road, Suite 100, just off Ga. 400 North, Dawsonville. Hours of operation are as follows: Tuesday Friday from 10 a.m. - 7

We are just so proud.” She emphasized their gratitude to the community, saying it was “nice to know that we live in a community that cares.” While in Afghanistan, Neighbours was stationed at the Honaker-Miracle forward operating post near the Pech River Valley in Kunar. “Being over there, you realize all the precious little things of life that you take for granted,” he said. “As the U.S. Army, we need to be there for our country and I am ready to go back to the battlefield if that is what I need to do.” Neighbours is an infantryman specializing in mortar combat. During his tour, family members said, he faced many hardships, often enduring stretches with little or no food and months without a shower. Mountain Home Rentals has new location By Elizabeth Hamilton Staff Writer
Eight-year chamber member Barry Cooper recently celebrated the opening of the new location of his business, Mountain Home Rentals of Georgia, through a ribbon-cutting ceremony sponsored by the Dawson County Chamber of Commerce. Located in the Foothills Shopping Center in Marble Hill, Cooper says he is glad to have found the new place for his business to call home. “We love our new location, its a great place to be,” Cooper said at the July 16 ceremony.
“We have had an increase in business, and people are able to find us easier.” A licensed real estate agent, Cooper offers short and long term properties in the North Georgia area, including homes in Big Canoe, Bent Tree and the surrounding area. “We offer rentals of private homes, luxury homes and cabins for vacation or weekend retreats,” Cooper said. “The communities in which the homes are located offer golfing, tennis, fishing, swimming, hiking trails and much more.” Cooper noted his appreciation of the chamber and the support in which it has provid-
ed to him over the years. Jay Walker, chairman of the chamber’s board of directors, was equally as complimentary. “Barry (Cooper) has also been very supportive of us (the chamber),” Walker said. “He is an excellent example of a noncounty member making the most of a resource such as the chamber of commerce. He is a good team member, and we are glad to see him in a new location and we know it will benefit him well.” For more information, contact Cooper at (770) 894-4444 or visit www.mountainhomerentals.biz.

Council supports impact fee reduction Golf tourney From staff reports
After careful review of information on the county’s impact fee program, the Government Affairs Council came out in favor of a reduction in the fees as applied to new or expanding businesses in Dawson County. Impact fees are charged at the time a building permit is granted. The revenue from the program is set aside to help defray expenses on specific projects such as road expansion, new fire station construction and other projects for the general good. Impact fees have been a growing method used by both municipalities and counties to off set the burden increased growth places on a local commu-
nity. While an excellent principle, the council noted that the fees set by the county were amongst the highest in the state. As such, it was felt the fees had become a detriment to all growth along the Ga. 400 corridor. “The Government Affairs Council brought before the entire chamber board information that showed a number of businesses had selected other locations to expand. Dawson County lost out on these new businesses and the sustained tax revenue such new business would bring to the county,” said Charlie Auvermann, council chairman. “Impact fees have an important role in growth, but when they are too high, they place the county
in an uncompetitive position.” The county, during hearings on impact fee rollbacks, heard that the fees collected had fallen significantly during the economic downturn. The results of the review saw the chamber board supporting efforts to lobby for a reduction in the impact fees. The chamber, represented by Chairman Jay Walker, joined a very significant cross section of the business and development community in speaking to the Dawson County Board of Commissioners, urging a reduction in the fees. The result was an overwhelming vote to reduce the fee to zero for the next year. “The decision by the
commissioners to roll back the impact fees to zero for the near-term shows that all of the commissioners understand the vital importance business plays in, not just our local economy, but also in a sustainable tax balance,” Auvermann said. “This was a critically important decision at a critical time.” The Government Affairs Council continues to engage in open dialogue with all regional, county and city government officials with the specific goal of promoting local business. The council works constantly to make sure our government officials understand the essential role that chamber members play in helping our county stay healthy and vibrant.
set for Oct. 15
From staff reports
Save the date for the chamber’s annual golf tournament, set for Thursday, Oct. 15. Chairman of the golf event, Mike Underwood announced: “This year’s tournament will be held at the beautiful Chestatee Golf Club. Players will be competing for some great prizes and there will be a variety of competitions to test everyone’s skills. Although individual players are accepted, why not start assembling your hand-picked team today?” “The golf tournament is an important fundraiser for our organization. It is also an event that our membership and the community can support by participating as a player and as a hole sponsor,” said Chamber President Linda Williams. Helen Taylor honored as ‘Pioneer Ambassador’ By Michele Hester Staff Writer
Helen Taylor thought she was attending the July 9 Chamber Luncheon at the Lakeview Center to make up for an Ambassador meeting she missed a few weeks earlier. Shortly into the meeting, she learned the truth, as
Chairman of the Ambassador Program Denny Putlak presented her with an award for the years she’s devoted both to the chamber and as one of the first ambassadors. Graciously accepting the plaque, Taylor spoke highly about the Ambassador Program, in which she and her late husband, Morris,
helped form several years ago to help promote the chamber. “The ambassadors became a very important part of the chamber’s success in Dawson County,” Taylor said, encouraging members to consider being a part of the group, which acts as a liaison between the chamber and its members.
“When we started the Ambassador Program, it was an honor to be asked to be an ambassador. The new ambassadors need to realize it’s still an honor. They are the vital link,” Taylor said. The Ambassador Program meets at 7:30 a.m. the fourth Wednesday of each month at Ryan’s in Dawsonville.
For more information, call the chamber at (706) 265-6278. The chamber’s next luncheon will be at noon tomorrow at the Lakeview Center. U.S. Rep. Nathan Deal is scheduled as the guest speaker. E-mail Michele Hester at michele@dawsonnews.com.
