This is the last time you will see the name Dawson’s Furniture on our bi-monthly catalogue - our store has been on a journey of evolution over the past five years culminating in the opening of our second Auckland location this coming August. To mark this milestone we are taking the opportunity to make a small but significant shift in our name to Dawson & Co. Those of you familiar with us will know the Dawson’s Furniture story - from it’s roots 38 years ago in 1978 when my Mum and Dad - Athol and Patricia Dawson opened their first furniture store in Auckland’s Birkenhead to our current location on Holder Place just off Constellation Drive. This new name reflects how far we have come from the humble beginnings of my one-armed father delivering sofas by himself or with my brother and myself in the school holidays, while Mum looked after the store. We are still the Dawson’s family but our family has grown. We have an incredibly loyal and passionate team that is a very important part of our ‘family’ and we feel the name change to Dawson & Co better encompasses who we are now. Our philosophy still remains simple - to showcase great quality, honest furniture from brilliant craftspeople in a welcoming environment. We travel extensively, collaborating with our manufacturing partners to ensure we bring the best value product we can find. We are extremely lucky to have fostered strong relationships with some of the market leaders in our field including Timothy Oulton, Manutti and now Tribu. Thanks for all your support over the last 38 years, and I personally look forward to the opportunity of welcoming you into our new store.

It may seem odd to lead with a picture of the stunning Tosca day bed by Monica Armani for Tribu in the middle of a New Zealand winter but we can’t not share the exciting news that we have added Tribu to our collection of outdoor furniture. Designed and hand finished in Belgium, Tribu manufactures exquisite furniture. The 2015 assemblage will be in store from Septemeber. Welcome aboard Tribu!

For over 90 years Italian design icon Calligaris has been in the furniture making business. From humble beginnings, Antonio Calligaris’ first piece of commercial furniture was the Marocca chair, a utilitarian chair typical of the Friuli region of north-east Italy. A sturdy wooden frame with a hand-woven seat, accentuated by legs that curved out slightly. Production of the chair involved women weaving the seats and apprentices handling the dying of the straw. Today Calligaris is sold in over 90 countries around the world. Fiercely loyal, the Calligaris family still produce most of their beautiful collection of lounge and dining furniture in Italy.
American lawyer turned designer Thomas Bina effortlessly merges old and new worlds with his environmentally conscious designs. Bina’s designs highlight the raw materials from which the furniture is made. Architectural elements such as glass and concrete evoke the brute strength of American enterprise. Wood represents the organic vitality of the soul and individuality. Bina’s materials are raw and honest to represent his core values of longevity and hard work.

“The story of Timothy Oulton started back in 1976 with a small antiques shop, owned by his father. Profoundly influenced by a love of antiques, his father’s military background, and an inherent affection for British heritage, Tim created an authentic, visionary brand with the deepest integrity and a passion to deliver the extraordinary. Handcrafted with only the best traditional techniques and fabrications, each Timothy Oulton piece is inspired by the past, but reconceived from a modern perspective, producing uniquely authentic collections that push the boundries of furniture design.”
