LARNACA REGION L o c a l - C o m m u n i t y - N e w s - E v e n t s - P e o p l e Cross Egypt Challenge Please allow me to introduce Cross Egypt Challenge, an international cross-country motorcycle and scooter rally that runs yearly in Egypt and aiming to promote the declining tourism to Egypt. Cross Egypt Challenge is an international series of endurance motorcycles and scooter rallies conducted throughout the most challenging roads and tracks of Egypt. It’s a breath-taking experience that is equally fascinating for spectators and riders alike. This is the only organized cross-country rally of its kind in the entire region and combines the best of adventure travel and extreme sport. Each season of the endurance rally introduces a new route throughout the most famous spots of Egypt, a track that nobody ever thought could be done on motorcycles or scooters. Riders from the four corners of the globe fly yearly to Egypt to take part in the Cross Egypt Challenge. To date, riders from over 28 countries participated in the previous seasons of the challenge and this year we are expecting riders from 13 different countries to take part in the adventure rally. On-Going Larnaca Projects The way in which Larnaca is expected to transform over the next few years was the focus of a recent meeting chaired by President Nicos Anastasiades at the Presidential Palace. In statements to reporters following the meeting, Transport Minister, Marios Demetriades, announced that the President had called Larnaca councillors to the meeting to discuss the progress of various development projects in the city and ways to speed up the process where delays were evident. The most important project in Larnaca at the moment is for the transfer of the oil refineries and fuel depots to their new location at Vasiliko. The project has already started and is following a schedule. A development study of the area, financed by the fuel companies, is being conducted by the Larnaca Chamber of Commerce and once completed will be submitted to the Town Planning Department and Interior Ministry for approval and to discuss incentives for investors. “What is important is the fact that this area of Larnaca is changing from an industrial area to a tourist area, in a few years we will be talking about a new Larnaca. These things take time, and even if the storage areas are moved, the area and the substrate need to be addressed before development can start,” explained Demetriades. The second important project is that of the Marina and Port, and the Minister is hopeful that the tenders process will start in October and that the project will be awarded in 2017. Demetriades indicated that there was interest from foreign investors in the Marina and Port, and specific measures were being taken to cut bureaucracy to make it easier for foreign investors to invest not only in Larnaca but Cyprus in general. “We are looking at three different aspects for the Port and Marina; Management of the Marina, the commercial use of the Port, and the simultaneous development of offices, a small hotel, and luxury apartments,” said Demetriades. Apart from the two main projects that were discussed, other development projects currently underway were also examined, with President Anastasiades giving specific instructions for certain projects that had fallen behind schedule to be speeded up. Fire Brigade Come to The Rescue of Kitten On September the 4th a small kitten fell down a man hole in a sewer in Ayia Napa. Locals tried to rescue the crying kitten, to no avail. Fortunately, the local Ayia Napa Fire Brigade were on hand and came to the rescue demonstrating that Cyprus is making progress in its attempt to care for stray animals in the region. Well done to all involved, at least in this case it was a happy ending. Unfortunately, we were unable to take a photograph of the kitten before it ran away, unharmed and free.

The event was hosted by Lisa Aston of Forever Living Products and Jo'Jo's owner Jo Kacenaite. Guests were invited to try a large selection of Aloe based products from the amazing Aloe Vera plant. This offered a variety of health and beauty benefits, as well as being given the opportunity to view the large selection of quality clothing and gift options which were available in the salon and adjoining shop. Due to its huge success there will be further pamper evenings in the near future, although individuals can choose to host a pamper evening in their own home should they prefer. Calling All Cat Lovers!

What a Crazy Summer!

Can anybody help me care for a colony of cats? There are at least 20 cats opposite the Bakers Arms, Ayia Traida, that I feed and water twice daily. All of these cats will require neutering at some point. There is also another small colony near the sailing club that I try to look after too. I have been doing this for the past six months and have spent a great deal of money ensuring they are looked after. All of this involves time and expense. If anybody is able to make a donation for both wet and dry food or any financial help with the neutering, this would be gratefully appreciated.

I have personally witnessed lots of suicidal driving this summer. On many occasions, vehicles were overtaking in 30/50 kph zones at motorway speeds. This would have resulted in death for any pedestrian struck by these offending drivers. I saw many near misses with cars reversing out from a parking slot, who were then met with a car on their side of the road travelling at high speed. I can't count the number of times I’ve been woken up by cars and motorcycles in the early hours of the morning, racing one another and then the sirens of the emergency services attending the possible carnage of road accidents. Hopefully with Autumn approaching this craziness may cease.

Another way of generating cash for the animals is by collecting empty aluminium drink cans. I would be able to receive those as well. I am happy to collect any donated food and cash from your home and a record of any monies donated or spent will be available on request. I can also collect direct from the person donating. I can be contacted on 9952035. Written by Graham Inch

Depression As a writer and someone who tries to support and guide others, I feel it is important that I pull from my own experiences, whether that’s personally or from someone close to me. For instance, how could I write about being a millionaire when I’m not? I could only imagine, but not really understand, the delight or despair something of that magnitude could bring. Personally I have struggled in earlier years with the dark clouds and little sunshine. Depression can feel like everyday life is an effort and you seem to lose interest in things which used to bring you joy. Loss of appetite, feeling constantly tired and teary are also indicators that life is becoming a struggle. For a period of time we tell ourselves that it’s just a bad day, a difficult week or a punishing month. Then before we realise it we have found ourselves in a place which seems tiring, frightening, tearful and isolating. So we are now questioning that something might be wrong. Luckily it’s a condition that can be treated by medication, change of habits or therapy, which can lead to a full recovery, but to do this we need to seek help. Maybe a visit to the doctor or share your thoughts with someone and tell them how you are feeling, but choose someone you feel comfortable with and someone you trust. It’s important to choose the right friend or family member to confide in, someone who will listen and comfort you. When we feel brave enough to speak out about these darkened feelings, it is so disheartening to be told to snap out of it. You also don’t need someone who uses the opportunity to tell you all that’s wrong in their own life! One thing is for sure - once we realise there is a problem, things will start to slowly get better. Just speaking out and talking through your rollercoaster ride of feelings, worries and emotions will erase all of the negativity and you can then start to rebuild by replacing it all with positivity. It’s not going to be quick or easy but it will be ok in the end, I promise you. Try to look to what makes you happy not sad and don’t overwhelm yourself with life. Break down things into smaller tasks that you can cope with. Exercise, even if it’s just a 5 minute walk - every little helps. Allow yourself moments to reflect on how far you have come by moving forward and be proud of yourself that you are fighting your way back to happiness. Stay connected with your family and friends, whether by text, phone call or by meeting for dinner. Finally, everyday may not be good, but there’s good in everyday!

Brief Encounter It was a rainy Monday night in January. There were only two customers in the Cyclops Bar. Niko, after generously refreshing our respective drinks, went out the back to have a smoke. The other customer that night sat in silence at the far end of the bar toying with a cute palm held gizmo. He was strangely attired for the local dressed simply in a silver jump suit. You might be forgiven for thinking he had undergone plastic surgery, because his facial skin looked tightly stretched across his near perfect bone structure. In a certain light his eyes betrayed a pinkish hue, a little like those of an albino. Then without so much as a word, he strode towards me sucking loudly on his index finger en-route. He then thrust the offending digit firmly into my ear. I wasn’t having that. Oh no! So I pinned him up against the bar and warned him if he tried that again I would deck him for sure. He was so apologetic I was almost feeling sorry for him. Especially after he explained that he just arrived from the Andromeda Galaxy and had not had time to learn the local conventions. Yes, as I suspected, the poor soul had obviously escaped from an institution somewhere and was acting out his delusions. But when he started emitting pink and blue orbs from his mouth that floated round the room, I started to have a crisis of faith. Anyway he enthusiastically explained at great length all about life in his home galaxy. Struggling for a suitable intellectual question to ask him, I enquired about the quality of the female talent up there. He explained that there were no women. When I asked how they procreate he started sucking his finger again. I took a contraceptive two steps back. After consulting his giz he walked to the exit enquiring…“As you are now the chosen host body for my baby, I should at least ask your name”...“Arthur mate” I replied with a grin. “Yeah very funny Space Cowboy. See ya” I concluded. Turned out the joke was on me, because after 22 months of morning sickness and night-time cravings for obscure Troodos cheeses whilst on the run from the world’s media, I proudly gave birth to a lovely Andromedan baby. A happy and contented child, he gurgles a lot and likes to blow little pink and blue orbs all around the nursery ceiling as he gazes adoringly up at me through his pretty albino eyes. By the way, I named him Androm. Well, Arthur just didn’t seem to fit somehow. Written by Clive Gardener

Affirmations When attempting to manifest through affirmations, many people make the mistake of affirming something that does not feel right or true to them, they may believe that they are lying to themselves. So now, that story's vibration comes into existence within them and that is what they will attract more of, not the actual affirmation. When affirming, it is important to pay close attention to how you feel. If the affirmation does not feel right, break it down until you can believe it. For example, if you affirm, ''I am attracting money'', but at the same time you feel that you are lying to yourself, then you will never attract money. Instead, begin by saying, ''Maybe I can attract money'', then when that feels right, affirm, ''I can attract money.'' And when that feels right, say, ''I am attracting money.'' So you have gone from I can't, to - maybe I can, to - I can, to - I am. Spooky Halloween Tic Tac Toe If you fancy playing games this Halloween, then this is the ideal craft for you and your little ones. It is a simple craft and a game that even young children can learn to play (although I do not recommend this if they are still in the habit of putting things in their mouths). I have seen this done with ladybugs and bees so I thought why not adapt it a little so it suits hallows eve instead. What you will need: Orange, green and brown craft foam or card A black marker Scissors Glue Green and white paint or nail polish 12 Pebbles How to: Step 1: Start by painting your pebbles as this will give them time to dry. Paint 6 white and 6 green. Step 2: Using your orange foam or card cut out a pumpkin shape and then cut out a brown stem, a green leaf and some vines. Glue these together to make your pumpkin game board. Step 3: Using your black marker and a ruler, draw out your grid for your game (make sure to create 9 squares so that you have enough spaces to create 3 in row). Step 4: Check your painted pebbles are dry, then using your black marker again, add Frankenstein faces to your green pebbles and ghostly eyes and mouths onto your white pebbles. Split your pebbles between two of you, one having ghosts and one having Frankenstein’s and then take it in turns to try and get 3 of your pebbles in row, blocking each other as you go. First player to get 3 in a row wins. Simple, yet a ghastly good game! My Kids love tic tac toe, or noughts and crosses, as its also known, and my eldest couldn’t wait to give daddy a game and frighten his socks off with her scary pebbles and spookily good game tactics! There is still time to nominate!

go to www.thedaxigroup.com and click on Business Awards to fill out our simple nomination form. Nominations close 15th October 2016 Before making a nomination please read the information below carefully: 1) Anyone Can Nominate Any Business - all nominations are anonymous. Nominations opened on 1st September 2016. 2) A Category Will Close Once It Has 12 Individual Companies Nominated - that have all been confirmed to meet the criteria of that category. If upon research the company does not meet the required criteria the nomination will become void & that company will not appear in that category. 3) Nominating A Company Puts That Company In The Award Process - and in front of the panel. It does not matter how many times a company is nominated for the same category & the number of nominations has no bearing on how the category winner is decided. The final decision is made by the panel once all research & interviews have taken place. 4) Businesses Can Only Be Nominated For One Category - so think carefully about the category you are nominating the company for. Is it the ‘best fit’ category for that company where they have the best chance of standing out as epitomising the award itself & what it represents? 5) Check The List - When you go to the nomination link there will be a list of companies that have already been nominated, where criteria has already been checked & confirmed for the category they have been nominated for. If the name of the company you want to nominate is already on the list then we cannot accept any further nominations for that company for that or any other category. 6) The Basics - All nominations made must be for companies located within the Famagusta or Larnaca region & must be legitimate businesses. If a company has more than one branch only the branches situated within Eastern Cyprus will be considered. Nominations DO NOT have to be for businesses who are Daxi Magazine advertisers or businesses who are clients of any of the sponsors or panel. Any type of business of any size can be nominated. 7) Rules - In the event that two nominations come through at the same time for the same company but in different categories, the nomination received first will be accepted & the company will be placed in that category only once it is confirmed that they meet the criteria required for that category. 8) Check The Award Criteria - Before nominating a company please consider the criteria for each award category (you can find this information on our website www.thedaxigroup.com or on our Facebook Page: Daxi Business Awards Cyprus. Try to give as much detail as possible as to why you think the company you are nominating fits the criteria of the award. When nominating for a specific award for example: Best Newcomer, please ensure the company you are nominating is between 12 & 36 months old as per the criteria. The same applies to the Lifetime Achievement Award where a company must be 20 years old or more to be eligible. Always check the criteria - remember if they don’t fit the criteria your nomination won’t count! 9) Have Specific Info To Hand - To fill out the nomination form correctly you will need to give specific information including: Name Of Company You Wish To Nominate, Type Of Company (ie shop/restaurant/mechanic etc), Location (ie Larnaca or Famagusta Region & name of area ie Dhekelia), Category You Wish To Nominate This Company For & most importantly The Business Owner's Name & Telephone Number. 10) You Can Nominate As Many Companies As You Want - There is no limit to the amount of separate nominations for separate companies you make.

If you do not see the company you have nominated listed on the following pages this may be because they do not fit the criteria for the award you have nominated them for. Please remember ONE nomination is all that is required as the decision regarding the winners will be based on business panel interviews and research NOT decided by the number of nominations.

THE BFG The BFG is an animated film directed by Steven Spielberg and written by Melissa Mathison. The movie is an adaptation of a Roald Dahl novel. Steven Spielberg shed a lot of his anarchic magic over this heart touching story. This amazing combination of mystery, adventure and some unrecognised truth had awoken the inner child of the Director. The story of the adventurous Sofie takes us to the world of the giants. Sofie is an orphan who is kidnapped by a friendly big guy. It doesn’t take long before the giant becomes Sofie’s BFG (Big Friendly Giant). The mysterious creature catches and bottles dreams but as any heroic figure, our BFG has a huge problem. He is constantly bullied by the superior. BFG doesn’t find the courage to stand up for himself but he is going to learn a life changing lesson from his new friend Sofie. The innocence radiated from this brave girl enhances her power to influence everyone around her. The production is the first Walt Disney Picture project directed by Steven Spielberg. With all of the unique effects and touching story, the movie surprises us with a box office of 153$ million only, while its budget was around $140 million.

Shantaram Although released in the far away 2003, Shantaram still remains a memorable piece of art in the autobiography genre. The author is George David Roberts, who is a convicted Australian bank robber and heroin addict who escaped from Pentridge Prison and fled to India. The novel is already translated into 39 languages in more than 180 countries. Warner Bros were planning to adapt the novel into a film with Jonny Depp in the main role but many disputes and failed plans have lead the project to stop functioning. The first plans for the productions started in 2003 but with the unfavourable circumstances the project was promised attention in 2015. Rumours state that the adaptation is still in process, this time with Jonny Depp as a producer. The story of a man completely expelled from the community shows us the secrets behind many social, political and psychological human aspects. The journey of Roberts to

Bombay and his stay there show us the truth and mixture of feelings hidden behind the Indian ghetto’s poverty. The taste of adventures, revenge, suffering, fate and hope decorate every single page of the book. Words which would never be said nor understood in court, show the reality behind the criminal’s soul. The heart breaking complex philosophy combined with tough experience, shows how love can change the views of any person. Quotes form the book ‘’Sometimes the lion must roar, just to remind the horse of his fear!’’ ‘’Optimism is the first cousin of love and it’s exactly like love in 3 ways, it’s pushy, it has no real sense of humor and it turns up where you least expect it.’’ ‘’Justice is not the only way we punish those who do wrong. It is the way we try to save them’’ ‘’Prisons are the temples where devils learn to pray.’’ Written by Daniela Amura

Donkey Milk – The Hot New Health and Beauty Product Donkey milk is the milk given by the domesticated donkey. It has been used for hundreds of years for cosmetic purposes as well as infant nutrition. In the Roman era, donkey milk was recognised as a common remedy with health benefits, but it wasn’t until the Renaissance that the first real scientific consideration was given to donkey milk. Napoleon’s sister was also reported to have used Donkey milk for her skin’s health care. The donkey’s milk was sold until the twentieth century to feed orphaned infants and to cure delicate children, the sick and the elderly. For this reason in Italy, Belgium, Germany and Switzerland many donkeys are born on farms. Milk production from donkeys is very rare in Europe and the Americas. The reason for this is simple, this enterprise requires a farming know-how. Milking of the animal is done by hand six times a day, in the presence of their foal - otherwise, failure of milk! All this for about two litres of this precious dairy, against thirty per cow. Always known but forgotten for a while, donkey milk reappears as the star of cosmetics and promises great benefits and fantastic results. Donkey Milk (or asses's Milk) is the closest mammal milk to human milk in biochemical composition. It contains Cassein, Albumin, Fat, Salt and Water. It is very rich in vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, D, C and E and its very high vitamin C content slows down the ageing process. Thanks to its rich composition, it is an excellent moisturiser which is very effective as an anti-age treatment. With it’s essential fatty acids it contains anti-ageing, regenerative and healing properties.

Psoriasis When a new patient comes in to see me I will ask them lots of questions. One question I ask is about any skin conditions. A common skin condition is psoriasis so I thought I would provide you with some basic information. Psoriasis is a non-contagious lifelong skin condition that appears as red or pink areas of thickened, raised, and scaling skin. Psoriasis commonly affects the skin of the elbows, knees and scalp. It has a variable course, periodically improving and worsening. It is not unusual for psoriasis to spontaneously clear for years and stay in remission and then return for no apparent reason. There are several different types of psoriasis, including psoriasis vulgaris (common type), guttate psoriasis (small, drop-like spots), inverse psoriasis (in the folds like of the underarms, navel, and buttocks) and pustular psoriasis (small pus-filled yellowish blisters). When the palms and the soles are involved, this is known as palmoplantar psoriasis. Psoriasis can be associated with joint problems in about 10%-35% of patients. The joint disease associated with psoriasis is referred to as psoriatic arthritis. Patients may have inflammation of any joints (arthritis), although the joints of the hands, knees and ankles tend to be most commonly affected. Psoriatic arthritis is an inflammatory, destructive form of arthritis and is treated with medications to stop the disease progression. A few facts about psoriasis • Psoriasis occurs when the immune system mistakes a normal skin cell for a pathogen (something that can harm the body like a bacteria or virus) and sends out faulty signals that cause over-production of new skin cells. • Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease. • Patients with psoriasis who are obese are predisposed to diabetes and heart disease. • A predisposition for psoriasis is considered inherited in your genes. • Psoriasis is not contagious. • Psoriasis gets better and worse spontaneously and can have periodic remissions (clear skin). • Psoriasis is controllable with medication. • Psoriasis is currently not curable but responds to environmental factors, such as stress, injury to the skin (cuts, scrapes, bug bites, severe sunburns), cold weather, allergies, infections, smoking and heavy alcohol consumption. So, do Osteopaths treat psoriasis? The simple answer is no, it is recommended that a patient see a dermatologist for a diagnosis and treatment plan. Osteopaths can however treat the side-effects especially in psoriatic arthritis. If you have any changes to the skin or are concerned that you may have psoriasis it is advised that you seek medical advice from a dermatologist who will be able to advise you further. THIS ARTICLE ‘PSORIASIS’ IS FOR INFORMATION ONLY AND IS NOT A SUBSTITUTE FOR MEDICAL ADVICE. PLEASE SEE VIKKI WOOLLETT FOR AN INDIVIUAL DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT PLAN.

How to Transfer Data When Upgrading to a New Operating System Greetings ladies and gents, Michael here with this month’s gadget article. I hope that you’re all staying cool in the heat! I have something a little different for you this month after hearing from a Daxi reader. Just a quick shout out to Dave who actually inspired this month’s post. I hope that you’re upgrade went well and that you’re new operating system is on the right track. So, what was Dave’s question? Well, it’s actually one that I’ve been asked a couple of times now and I think that it’s something that many people will face at some point when considering upgrading their computers. Dave was wondering how he might be able to keep hold of the photos and information present within the internal hard drives of his computer, even though he needed to upgrade his operating system. The thing is, when you upgrade from an older system (XP for example), the operating system will be written over entirely. There are ways to store data but that can get a little too technical (it will involve partitioning a drive and labelling it for the new operating system) and if it isn’t done right, the files and documents might end up getting wiped anyway. So, here’s a safer option for those of you reluctant to upgrade through fear of losing your treasured memories and important documents. The first thing to do is to consider the amount of space that your files take up on your internal drive. Anything over 320mb and you might want to consider investing in an external hard drive, nothing too fancy just something for under €100 that offers a decent amount of space. Personally, I have used a 1TB hard drive and it’s served me well for six years now. Before upgrading, be sure to plug your new hard drive into one of your USB ports and put it somewhere that won’t get knocked especially if you have quite a collection of files, as they could take a couple of hours to transfer fully. Then, just transfer your documents from your internal hard drive to your new external one. It’s best to choose to copy them, rather than cut them just in case anything goes wrong with the transfer. With your files transferred, you will now have them stored securely on your external hard drive and you will now be able to upgrade your operating system without concern. What about those of you that might be locked out of your older operating systems, like those that are no longer supported (XP, for example)? Well, you could always purchase a SATA/ IDE to USB adaptor and transfer the data that way, if you want info on how to do this, drop me a quick email and I’ll let you know. I hope that this helps a few of you good folks - until next time, Michael. Article written by Michael of Web Copy Hub, michael@webcopyhub.com, www.WebCopyHub.com DAXI GADGET WRITER WANTED! Just for a Change - Boats! During August I enjoyed many swim sessions in the afternoon, just to cool off at Trinity Beach, Ayia Triada. One weekend I noticed a large Rib (Rigid-inflatable boat) coming out of the harbour. My first observation was that it looked quite new, closely followed by noticing that it had two Mercury 300hp engines. If I had to guess, I would have thought it could cost in excess of £100k, but my main thoughts were why would anyone need 600hp? Who could deny it has great poser value? Their finest moment was when all the 'commoners' were watching as they pushed the twin throttles forward and the boat moved like a bat out of Hell! How much does it cost in fuel to look that cool? Well, of course that depends on how much throttle you are using. More throttle equals more rpm. Typically, full power on those 300hp engines is around 6000 rpm but not everyone is going to want to do 70 knots so I guess 2/3rds throttle or 4000 rpm is the most you would want. Now here’s where it gets interesting! The fuel burn at that level is 34.25 litres x 2 = 68.5 litres per hour. That is going to cost €77! Okay if you can afford the boat maybe you have the money for the fuel. I quite like the idea of a small speedboat and I've looked at what would suit my needs and how much it may cost. A four seater capable of pulling a skier would need 75hp or more. The fuel burn for a four stroke 75hp at 2/3 throttle is 12.5 litres per hour, that’s just over €14. What You Need to Own a Boat You do not need a licence if the boat does less than 15 knots but anything faster will require a Cyprus boat licence. You will have to take a practical and written test. RYA is not recognised in Cyprus so you must have a Cyprus licence and a bill of sale must be completed by the seller using an MS20 form. The cost of registering the boat to the new owner is just over €34. This is usually paid by the previous owner to make sure it has been done. The boat must have a VHF radio and the licence must be current. The annual fee is €20. With boats capable of more than 15 knots, a safety inspection must be carried out on change of ownership. There is no less than 26 requirements to be met for the instructions to the owners of high speed small vessels laws 56(I) & 60(I) of 1992 and 60(I) of 1999 Regulations P.I. 121/99. If your boat passes the inspection, you will receive your circulation licence which is valid for 5 years. The fee for this depends on the length of the boat. Up to 6 metres is €51.26, up to 7 metres is €95.68 and this increases all the way to 15 metres which is €384.44. If you trailer a boat you must have a driving licence which covers pulling a trailer and you must include cover for a trailer with your vehicle insurance. The trailer itself has to be registered with its own log book. There is no legal requirement to have insurance for the boat but what if you had an accident at sea resulting in a third party being injured? Do your homework before buying a boat and understand all the legal requirements I have covered. There are lots of choices when it comes to buying a boat so try to get it right for all your requirements. Remember that old adage - act in haste repent at leisure! THE LATEST SPORTS AND EVENTS NEWS

LOCAL SPORTS - CYPRUS RALLY Is it really a year since I reported on last year’s rally? Well, here it is again but it very much looks that from the early signs our local readers will have to travel a little further afield in order to see any of the action this year. Whereas the ceremonial start and finish last year took place at Finikoudes on the Larnaca sea front, this year it will start on Limassol’s promenade on 7th October and end at the same venue. Also, I can find no mention of the local stages at Klavdia and Kellia which were included last year. The event is now in its 45th year, as in recent years not only will it be the closing event in the European Rally Championship but points won will also count towards the Middle Eastern Rally championship for those also involved in that event. The HQ for the event will be in Nicosia which will also host a special street stage taking which includes part of the UN green line which runs through the city. From the websites I have looked at, it would appear that with less than a month to go, details of stages have not yet been published. So if you are interested in attending the event I would suggest you keep an eye on this website: www.cyprusrally.com.cy If you have any suggestions or are involved with a sport you would like to see featured, please e-mail me at barrettdg@yahoo.co.uk Written by Daxi Sports Writer: Doug Barrett

If you can’t stand the heat... ..get out of the kitchen! Well, I dare say it hasn’t had too much attention these past few months. However Christmas is approaching (!) and it might just need some sorting out and a few low cost quick fixes. If you have a small kitchen, storage is definitely the major problem. This means – wait for it – having a major ‘minimalizing’ session and getting rid of stuff. Unless you have someone to build cupboards to the ceiling to store all that stuff you don’t use/hardly use/have never used, be brave, ditch it and see how much cupboard and worktop space magically materialises. Overflow can’t-do-without stuff can go into those nice Ikea boxes on top of the wall units. Add shelves if there’s room, and maybe hang your (best) saucepans beneath them. A kitchen trolley would be useful here – a sort of moveable multifunction island if you can park it elsewhere. What can be done about boring or outdated doors? If they’re laminate, they’re probably best sprayed professionally but painting wood doors with chalk paint is a great idea – and much more fun. Before you get too excited, best check whether the cabinet side panels and various support panels have to match or be painted too; it might turn into a bigger job than you thought (we did say quick fixes). Of course, you could just paint some of the units, replace all the handles - with the ones you wished you had chosen the first time around - and you could still achieve a totally different look. Also, replacing all the white, or more likely, yellowing electrical sockets with chrome or stainless steel is a magic little touch. Removing tiles is not a low cost quick fix, but you could over-tile if you really hate them. Another option if you have plain tiles is to over-tile the hob splashback area only; it’s usually the focal point of the kitchen. If the ranges available locally don’t appeal to you, now’s the chance to think outside the box and use sheets of mosaics (or make your own design) – or even use large format décor tiles. Who says they have to go in the bathroom? Still lacking pizazz? Paint the walls a dramatic colour. It’s amazing how changing the background is sometimes all it takes to bring about a completely different perspective on things. Happy cooking. Kindly Written by Corinne Twining - Interior Designer. Market Update 2016 Well, the green shoots of recovery are DEFINITELY appearing! The property market in Cyprus is finally on the mend with sales Island wide predicted to hit over 6000 units in 2016. Sales have not been as robust since 2012 but the convergence of low prices, improved property laws and a favourable exchange rate are working in our favour. It remains a buyers’ market with a great deal of stock available on both new and resale property but prices have levelled out and are not predicted to drop further still. Cyprus wide property sales are up 30% for the first 8 months of the year so let us look at sales in your regions:

Larnaca

Sales in Larnaca have performed just slightly below the national average but are up a very respectable 28% year on year. Sales to non-Cypriots are up 15% and to local buyers 32%. This is a sure sign that Cypriots are taking the opportunity to buy now while prices are good. We understand from our colleagues in Larnaca that there is an upsurge in interest particularly from Lebanese, Russian and Middle-Eastern clients.

Famagusta

Famagusta has performed slightly above the national average with sales increasing a healthy 32% year on year. Sales to non-Cypriots are currently 3% down on last year from 66 transactions to 64 but the domestic market is up a massive 51% for the first 8 months of the year. It is interesting that our experience is that there have been a lot more foreigners paying deposits this year and we believe that the figures will even out over the coming months.

A buoyant property market is vital for the recovery of the economy and we are delighted with results so far this year. Property sales impact on every kind of local business from furniture suppliers, to restaurants, to service providers and they bring a welcome influx of cash to the regions. Long may it continue! Communal Property Advice 2 While there are many benefits to owning a property in a communal building, development or resort, there are also additional concerns. Your fellow owners and neighbours become part of your investment, almost as if they were indirect partners. They can negatively affect your investment as much as a bad business partner can affect a business.

Step 4: Know your rights and obligations The management committee are the elected representatives for the property owners and are responsible for millions of Euros of property investment. You should study in detail the regulations and make use of your rights. Also make use of local resources and communal property experts for advice.

This is why it’s essential when purchasing property with communal facilities that you properly understand the unique aspects relating to communal property ownership.

4 Steps to Increasing Communal Fee Income

This article is how to increase payments into the communal fund. Dealing with hardened debtors will be covered in a later article. Owners’ not paying their communal fees in full or on time is a problem most communal buildings face. While there are certain circumstances when the chances of collection are low, most get away with not paying, simply because of a lack of appropriate action to get that debt. Step 1: Remove Excuses Owners trying to avoid paying their communal fees will generally look for some kind of justification to explain their actions, both to themselves and others. Removing these excuses makes it harder for them to find this justification. The most common excuses are: lack of accounts transparency, no committee or improperly elected committee, no recent AGM in the last 12 months, low levels of site maintenance and lack of knowledge of their obligations. Step 2: Provide 100% Transparency Related to step 1 but vitally important, it’s essential to make all aspects of the communal operations fully visible to owners. Include accurate and clear monthly income & expense reports, records of the AGM & committee meetings, breakdown of fee calculations etc. There are many free online passwords secured file storage solutions available to help distribute these documents to owners. Step 3: Provide Consistency Even the strongest structure can be overcome by constant, well placed and steadily increasing pressure. Always chase overdue payments as soon as they become overdue. Have a set chase schedule and elevation procedure and stick to it. Every contact should provide a slightly higher level of pressure than the last and never allow long periods of no contact with owners in arrears. It takes time and effort; so expect to make 20-60 contacts (phone calls, emails, visits etc.) per debtor to obtain a payment.

Chocolate Fondant (or Molten Lava Cake) with Vanilla Ice-Cream This has to be one of my favourite desserts. It’s very popular in a lot of restaurants and surprisingly very easy to make at home. I just love the divine melting texture with that sublime liquid centre. It was supposedly invented by a French chef who was making chocolate cake but took it out too early and discovered it was still soft and gooey on the inside. It tasted delicious so he decided to serve it as it was, but just renamed it. It was made popular in the States by an American chef. Personally, I don’t care who thought of it, I’M JUST HAPPY THEY DID! INGREDIENTS (should make about 10) 50 gms of melted butter for brushing ramekins Cocoa powder for dusting ramekins 200 gms of dark chocolate cut small (or just bash it until you get small pieces) 200 gms of butter, cut small 200 gms of caster sugar 200 gms of sifted plain flour 4 eggs plus 4 yolks METHOD • Firstly, we need to pre heat the oven to about 290F and get our moulds ready (ramekins). • Using the 50 gms of melted butter and a brush, brush all around the ramekins and put them in the fridge to firm up for about 5 mins. • Brush them again and dust with the cocoa powder. Place a spoon of cocoa powder in each ramekin and make sure it is completely coated, then put the extra powder into a bowl so that you can use it again. • Put a pan of water on the heat and another bowl on top of the pan, making sure the bowl does not touch the water. • When the water is boiling, turn the heat down to simmer and place your chocolate and butter inside. Stir every now and again until all of the ingredients are melted and combined together. • Take off the heat and leave to cool for about 10 mins. • While it is cooling, place your eggs and caster sugar into another bowl. Whisk together by hand or using an electric mixer, whisk until you get a nice runny paste. Slowly whisk in your chocolate mixture then the sifted flour. • Fill up your ramekins and place them on a tray in the oven for 15 mins max (I took mine out at 13 1/2 mins). Leave to cool for a few mins - not too long because when the fondants are warm they taste better. Then serve. • I serve mine with vanilla ice cream and homemade caramel sauce, HEAVEN.

LAW - FINANCES - YOUR RIGHTS - INVESTMENTS - ADVICE - GUIDANCE

QROPS - Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Schemes Since their launch in 2006, the popularity of QROPS (Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Schemes), an HMRC - recognised overseas pension, continues to grow amongst expatriates and individuals considering a move overseas. Demand for QROPS has experienced continuous annual growth which looks set to continue throughout 2016/17 as the market continues to mature and more people become aware of their considerable benefits. Due to the ever changing exchange rate and recent Brexit concerns, many clients and acquaintances both in Cyprus and across the region ask in what currency they should have their pension paid to them. The people based in the Eurozone and holding a UK pension scheme will have witnessed a roller coaster ride over the past 10 years. The rule of thumb for any financial advice is to have retirement income paid out, in the currency expenditure is expected to be paid in. The majority of an individual’s expenditure will be in the currency of their country of residence. This means receiving an income in Sterling which then has to be converted to the Euro for example - this provides a huge risk with currency fluctuations making it very hard to plan from month to month. Using simple figures of a person receiving a pension scheme of £10,000 and its conversion to Euro’s can illustrate this point when using an example (assuming no inflationary increase in the pension scheme)

June 20th 2005

£10,000 x 1.50 = €15,000

December 29th 2008

£10,000 x 1.02 = €10,200

July 24th 2012

£10,000 x 1.29 = €12,900

March 11th 2013

£10,000 x 1.15 = €11,500

March 11th 2015

£10,000 x 1.42 = €14,200

Using a QROPS to transfer Sterling denominated pensions then utilising Euro denominated assets to pay out an income in Euro’s could help prevent such large fluctuations in income. This can also protect against a permanent depreciation of a currency’s value and make for a happier retirement.

Halloween Fun! October is a funny month in Cyprus, the change from summer to winter happens almost overnight as the summer season ends and everyone starts to wind down for the winter. For the last few years we have marked the change with a get together and although we don’t NEED a theme, the end of October provides us with a great one. Halloween is now an official event in our family calendar, despite the fact I’d never actually been to a Halloween party until 2010, for us it’s now something to be celebrated along with Christmas and Easter. I love Halloween, it’s a chance to decorate, dress up and eat far too many sweets - what's not to enjoy? I enjoy planning treats for the boys, so last year we invited a couple of friends over for a mini Halloween party. It was held a day early on the 30th as we were going to be working over the whole weekend, so it meant that the fun began for the boys as soon as they finished school. Leo was very excited about it, although I was probably more excited than I should have been! As always, for me the part I actually enjoy the most is the lead up to the event, so I loved Friday morning decorating and preparing some spooky food and treats. I presented them with a scavenger hunt when they got home. On a piece of orange paper (keeping it to the colour scheme!) I quickly jotted down a list of things to find among the decorations; a hanging bat, 6 pumpkin faces, 2 glowing skeletons, 6 spiders and so on. Surprising, it was a really big hit and kept them both happy and working together for ages. With the spooky music playing in the background (got to love a YouTube playlist!) and the food laid out, we all started to eat when everyone arrived. We played a couple of games, Pin the Nose on the Pumpkin and a favourite from last year Hanging Doughnuts, which as it turns out is ridiculously difficult! Of course the main event for the kids was the Trick or Treating which I had planned in advance with a few of the neighbours. I love the low key way we can do this here in Cyprus and living in a small apartment complex, we all trooped out to see what goodies we could find. I had given each of them a Halloween bag, with some themed worksheets inside, colouring pages, Wordsearch, a maze and word puzzles found on the internet. This kept them busy while they all sat and did them together amidst a pile of empty sweet wrappers! Despite the huge amount of sugar they must have consumed, the excitement wore them all out and my boys were in bed almost as soon as everyone had left. It’s almost time to think about what we will get up to this year! Pets of the Month

Rascal is a Cyprus poodle cross terrier. He was born approximately in late 2014. It seems that when Rascal was picked up he had been very neglected. His coat was so badly matted and he had to be completely clipped. Whether that was because he had been living on the streets for some time or because he had a very uncaring owner we do not know. Rascal is full of energy & likes to be with people. We would not recommend a home with very small children as he can be quite over excitable. A calm and quiet home with time to show him love and to play with him would be perfect. He will need basic training but this boy is a very quick learner. Although he is okay with other dogs he can be dominant because he has only just been neutered and has not quite grasped that he does not need to prove he is the ‘man’ about town! Rascal is definitely not a cat lover because he enjoys chasing them. He is quite a character and well liked amongst the volunteers at Argos. What he really needs is a home. Oshie is a cute male puppy. He is a mix breed with very soft semi long coat and is fully vaccinated. Oshie is so very active, plays all the time, is adventurous and curious of new things. Oshie and his sister were saved from being euthanised. They both need a chance of a new life. Please do not let him grow old in the shelter. He needs a loving home.

Animal World Day – 4th October

Since 1931 it’s been the mission to raise the status of animals rights in order to improve the welfare standards around the globe. How far have we come? Has the situation of neglected, stray animals and their rights improved during these 85 years? Maybe a fraction of what would have been expected of an 85-year struggle. Now I’m going to share the piece I wrote a few years ago, especially for this day. Some of you may have read it before and some of you will be reading it for the first time. Please note that this was not written with the intention of offending anyone. WHEN GOD CREATED EARTH HE FIRST MADE THE HILLS, THE TREES, THE GRASS, THE BEAUTIFUL FLOWERS, THE STREAMS, THE RIVERS, THE MOUNTAINS, THE SEA, THE SUN THE RAIN, THE FISH, THE BIRDS, ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL - THE ANIMALS! AND ON THE 6TH DAY HE LOOKED BACK UPON HIS WORK AND SMILED TO HIMSELF, EVERYTHING WAS PERFECT, EXCEPT FOR ONE THING. HE HAD FORGOTTEN TO GIVE THE ANIMALS A VOICE! SO LASTLY AND ALTHOUGH DOUBTFUL HE CREATED MAN. "OH WELL, WHAT THE HECK" HE THOUGHT TO HIMSELF, WHO'S GOING TO NOTICE IF HE MADE ONE IMPERFECTION AMONGST SO MUCH PERFECTION!

It would be great if things would happen on their own but on the 3rd you need to make a maximum effort to make sure it all gets done. Tasks are easier when you don't have to do them solo, so why not ask a friend for some help? It seems like everything is a struggle on the 11th but it doesn't have to be that way. Look for every option available before deciding.

You're feeling great on the 16th and when your self-confidence picks up like this, you not only get great ideas, but you're brave enough to implement them. Is the world ready for your creativity? Only time will tell, but the initial reviews are very good. The 28th is a perfect day to hang in the background, because certain personality types get on your nerves. Why put yourself through more than you have to?!

You're a big picture kind of guy or gal. You don't want to get bogged down in the details but unfortunately that's exactly what the 1st through 3rd calls for. Once you get through this little episode, you should be home free! You'd love to pass off a lot of your problems onto someone else on the 6th but that’s not how it works. Everyone is happy to have that fiery energy of yours on their team.

All of the things that usually make you yawn are much more exciting on the 4th. Is it your attitude toward them, or are things actually different? Either way, it's awesome! Taking the rational approach is beneficial on the 10th especially when it comes to your money. If you want to make more of it, listen to reason instead of emotion. You have wonderfully focused energy on the 20th.

Familiar surroundings are drastically altered on the 13th leaving you to wonder if you had it right in the first place. Where is the line between perception & reality? Can you tell the difference? You don't take no for an answer & your level of determination is sky high. You're ready to take the initiative on the 20th because you can probably handle the responsibility but is it something you want to volunteer for?

You love to be a homebody, cozying up on the couch and snuggling with your peeps but on the 12th the big crazy world calls you out of your comfortable shell. Take care of business quickly so you can get back home to the safety of your nest. If you get invited to an elegant gala on the 20th – go! It's fun to get the chance to dress up and see and be seen with all of the pretty people.

The 3rd and 4th is a good day to pay some attention to your financial matters. Does someone owe you money? Maybe it’s time to collect your debts! Romance is your top priority on the 10th especially if you have someone who's been trying super hard to snag your attention. You get the chance to network and hobnob with some pretty important people on the 22nd which could change your entire outlook.

The 22nd is a triumphant day. If you've been competing with someone lately, you're bound to be declared the winner. You love to explore unexplained phenomena on the 6th & anything unusual captures your attention. When something is out of place, you want to know why, you're really good at getting the answers. You're a powerhouse on the 18th, you don't like to share the things you worked so hard to obtain.

Spend some extra time tending to a friendship or similar personal relationship that you might have been ignoring lately. You'd love to make an intellectual connection with someone on the 24th and 25th but sometimes the mental chemistry just isn't happening. You know that song that's going through your head on a constant loop? Listen closely to the lyrics. They might be meaningful and giving you a message!

The 21st is an excellent day to get your way but you might have to play on people's emotions a bit. You don't normally like to use overly persuasive methods but you're so good at it right now. A window of opportunity opens up on the 31st, are you brave enough to go for it? You have more than enough talent & experience to be a complete success. Scorpio - what are you waiting for?

It's nice to be appreciated. Your friends, family and all the other people in your life love you for so many reasons on the 4th and they aren't afraid to tell you exactly why you're so special to them. Aww, what a great way to start the month! You begin a new journey on the 9th which could really have a long-lasting and far-reaching impact on your life. Don’t be surprised by the outcome!

Are there any limits to what you're capable of? Your genius shows in so many ways on the 2nd, that you have a hard time choosing just one area of expertise. Why not show the world what you're capable of in as many different ways as possible? You're as close to a super hero as it gets! You seem to be unaware of your own velocity on the 11th, so it might take someone else to slow you down.
