FAMAGUSTA REGION L o c a l - C o m m u n i t y - N e w s - E v e n t s - P e o p l e Cyprus Autism Society Autism is a group of complex disorders of brain development. The disorders are characterised in varying degrees by difficulties in social interaction, in verbal or nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviours. Most cases involve a complex and variable combination of genetic risk and environmental factors that influence early brain development. Each individual is unique and therefore is different from other children. So far there is no cure for Autism but in children, especially pre-school and school age, early intervention with the appropriate medication can do wonders. The Cyprus Autism Association was founded in 1990 and is recognised by the state as a charity non-profit organisation. The main purpose of the association is to ensure the rights of Autistic people and that through the treatments they need, to ensure a better quality of life both in health and education. The association established the first specialised centre for intervention in 2004 in Limassol. In 2008 followed the second intervention centre in Paphos, while in 2010 a third intervention centre was established in Nicosia. In the centres, programmes for adults run from 07:00 to 15:00. The Centres in Nicosia and Limassol work programmes after 15:00 up to 19:00 for children of pre-school and school age. The Centres provide children and adults rehabilitation treatments, education, protection and similar treatments proven to be needed by people with Autism. The association also helps people with information on various topics including the rights of people with Autism. Future goals include creating centres in the other provinces and the creation of houses in communities for all day employment of adults. With regards to the children our goal is to inform and enlightenment parents, people, teachers and medical staff about Autism and what to expect living with an Autistic person. We are also looking to create new programmes in new spaces depending on the needs of the people. Currently in our centres there are 73 people who receive treatments. You can find more information about the association at: www.autismsociety.org.cy and in Facebook: Σύνδεσμος για Άτομα με Αυτισμό Κύπρου Nicosia intervention center: nicosia@autismsociety.org.cy - Tel: 22512262 Limassol intervention center: Limassol@autismsociety.org.cy - Tel: 25343462 Paphos intervention center: paphos@autismsociety.org.cy - Tel: 26221346

LARNACA REGION L o c a l - C o m m u n i t y - N e w s - E v e n t s - P e o p l e Lefkara Through a Lens Recently, I went to one of my favourite places in Cyprus. The lovely village of Lefkara, tucked away in the hills. The trip was organised by the U3A Larnaca and such was the response that two coaches were laid on to accommodate everybody! Our first stop was Ayias Minas Monastery. Going through the gates, one is struck by the peaceful atmosphere. The wonderful, large mosaics of the Virgin Mary and other saints on the outside walls, lead the visitor into the actual monastery. The double-storey house is built around a shady courtyard, occasionally we could see a black-clad nun silently walking through to the cloisters. Parts of the building are out of bounds to preserve the privacy and sanctity of the monastery and its nuns. Photographing the nuns is strictly not allowed, the monastery is a holy place of worship as well as the home of the nuns. The scent of the jasmine and blossom was quite heady and left a spiritual feel to the monastery. We paid our respects in the little chapel and left the quiet and peace of this wonderful place, purchasing some home-made preserves at the door on the way out. The warm sunshine seemed to bless the buildings and its pious residents. Then, on to Lefkara itself and a welcome cup of coffee at one of the kafenions there. It seems that at all points in Lefkara there are places of interest to see or a stunning view to photograph. All day we could hear the ‘click-click’ of club members taking their photographs, so many opportunities to capture the essence of this pretty village! Then, we were given the opportunity to do what most ladies (myself included, of course!) like to do - we went shopping in one of the most prominent lace/silverware shops. This was the point where some husbands went ‘missing’ - I wonder why! The exquisite lace has made Lefkara famous all over the world over the centuries and you can still see a few of the ladies of the village working at their embroidery outside their houses. The tradition to make this type of work has been handed down from the time when the Venetians ruled Cyprus and it is said that Leonardo Da Vinci actually took a piece of this lace back for the altar at Milan Cathedral. The intricacy of the work means that it takes a long time to complete even one small piece, so the work is appropriately priced and is highly collectable. Our next call was at the workshop of one of the silversmiths of the village. Here, we could see two brothers working the silver into delicate patterns. Lefkara is also famous for this silver filigree work and the skill has been passed down from father to son over many hundreds of years. We were given a quick tour of the small workshop and it was interesting to see how the pieces were decorated by the craftsmen. Many pieces are used in Churches for weddings, christenings and other ceremonies. Then on to a wonderful lunch at Tasties Restaurant who opened especially on that Monday for us. Delicious! The last call was to the House of Patsalos, a museum in the village created from a merchant’s house. There we were able to see how a rich person’s house would be furnished and decorated in the middle of the last century and earlier. The House has many rooms, symbolising the affluence of the family and was built around a large courtyard. The House is painted in the typical Venetian Blue colour which is famous throughout Lefkara. Lofty, airy rooms and high ceilings meant that the house was cool and welcoming, no need for air-conditioning in those days! The furniture throughout the house was hand-carved with symbolic patterns, each piece an heirloom. Now a Museum, it is interesting to see the many showcases featuring costume and artefacts from a bygone time. Well worth a visit, it is a hidden gem in this historic village. We then left for home, agreeing that it had been a good day out. So many opportunities to take photographs. Helen Barrett, Larnaca Community Writer 10

Open Mic Night at ‘Tree Of Life’ On 2nd December, my husband and I did something quite exciting....are you guessing? Well, we were invited to the first Open Mic Night to be held at The Tree of Life Centre in the heart of Larnaka. A gathering of like-minded folk at the Tree of Life Centre to ‘have a go’ at reading out their offerings of poetry or short-stories. We were all a little nervous at first, but soon confidence grew and we all enjoyed each other’s work. We had a judge (Alexandra Manglis) who was listening intently to what we had to say and prizes were awarded at the end of the evening to those she thought were the best. Fifteen people read out a poem or short story (some were in English and some in Greek) - a wonderful start to Open Mic Nights. The event was organised by Soulla Ak and her brother Mario Andreou at Tree of Life and also James Mackay, who compered the evening. This was an excellent event, held at a venue which exuded a feeling of peace and tranquility. The Tree of Life Centre opened recently and is a wonderful place to hold events such as this, or any appropriate courses. The old building, formerly a house, has many delightful, lofty rooms and everything needed to hold diverse events and courses. The Open Mic Night attracted mostly writers and also those who just wanted to listen, but all agreed that the excellent venue added to the ambience of the evening. Some of the readings were of a serious, introspective nature and some were humorous, a real cross-section of poetry and stories. A large audience enjoyed the evening (and the lovely refreshments) and it is hoped that the next Open Mic Night will be held early in the New Year. For more information, please contact: Soulla Ak, Mario Andreou or James Mackay at The Tree of Life Marcou Dracou 9, Larnaca, Tel: 24 821921 or see Facebook: Tree of Life Centre Written by Helen Barrett

You're a great leader on the 16th and when you're put in charge things get done. You'd rather not delegate the bulk of the workload but even a superhero like you needs help every once in a while. Save the most important tasks for yourself and dole out the rest to your most trusted minions. 17

A Clean Page As we wave goodbye to 2016 and all that it has brought us, or in some cases what it has taken away, we now welcome 2017 with open arms and happily embrace the fresh start of a New Year and maybe new you? What are your resolutions? Maybe it’s to lose a few inches off the waistline, to shake off some bad habits, to get fit or to make more effort with family and friends - maybe less in some cases. How many times have we all been at this point of change and start with so much dedication and drive, only to throw it to the wayside a couple of days or weeks later and slip back into what we feel is easiest or comfortable? There is so much we all wish and hope for but life sort of gets in the way and weakens our ambition and dreams. I truly admire those who can achieve what they set out to do. To witness that cup of glory when you reach your goal must be so rewarding and uplifting. I believe the correct way to achieve your goals is to start with one single step in the right direction. Basically the story of the tortoise and the hare - time is insignificant, what matters is the journey and what it brings to enrich your life. If a situation or a circumstance actually brings you more sadness than joy, maybe this is the time to consider that single step? Change isn’t easy, it is difficult but we all have the resources to do it. Believe in yourself - You CAN be, do, have and achieve anything you desire! Start by making a wish list and put everything on it, no matter how little or extreme the things are that you want to experience, possess or remove from your life. It may surprise you how achievable some things really are. The most important thing is to be happy and healthy for the New Year. I wish each and every one of you a Happy New Year and look forward to the journey of 2017. I hope that you laugh a little louder, smile a little bigger, love a little deeper and walk through life a little slower.

Keep ‘Mobile’ this Winter I love to get the kids to make things that we can use to decorate our home and quite a few times we have made mobiles, or wreaths for the different holidays or seasons. This winter we have been feeling the chill so we decided to use this as our inspiration and add a little sparkle to the duller days. We decided to make some pretty wintery mobiles with added snowy effects and lots of glitter (much to Daddy’s disapproval as he ended up covered in it too). What you will need: A Stick White School Glue/Elmer’s Glue Sea Shells Pompoms Glitter (the more sparkle the better) Fake Snow Flakes (available in stationary shops) Twine or string Fishing Wire A Glue Gun/Superglue (adult participation recommended)

How to: Step 1 - In a small container mix together some white glue, fake snow, and glitter. In another small pot just put some plain glue. Step 2 - Hand your kids a paintbrush and set them to work painting their stick with the snow and glitter glue. Make sure to cover it well to ensure the finished article looks frozen and sparkly. Set to one side to dry. Step 3 - Using the plain glue, ask your kids to paint the outside of the shells and then sprinkle a generous amount of glitter over the painted surface. I recommend doing this on an oversized piece of paper so that you can fold up and dispose of excess glitter easily. Again set these to one side to dry. Step 4 - Once your children’s sticks and shells are dry it is time to get the glue gun and pompoms out. Cut your fishing wire into pieces then stick them onto your pompoms and shells for hanging. Step 5 - Tie some twine or string to either end of the dry stick. Then get your kids to decorate them with the shell and pompom baubles. Lots of glittery, winter themed, sparkles to adorn your home made by your special little snowflakes! If you have the space try to hang these either outside or in a window space, so that the sun can make them sparkle even more. Written by Sam Barnes. New Year…. New You! with Clean 9 by Forever Living Products With the New Year upon us and the Daxi Business Awards only a few weeks away I decided it was time to get rid of some of those excess festive pounds and slim down so I can fit into my stunning dress for this special event. So when Lisa Aston approached me with a product I have used in the past which has helped me not only slim down but detox my whole body I knew it was just the kick start I needed to my new health regime. Clean 9 is a detox and cleansing programme manufactured by Forever Living Products, the biggest Aloe Vera producer in the world. The programme is designed to be used over 9 days, hence the name and in those nine days you can expect to lose weight, look and feel better and begin to eliminate stored toxins that keep you from absorbing the maximum nutrients in your food. Now, don’t get me wrong the first two days of the programme are tough and require a lot of discipline BUT with appropriate healthy snacks and taking the supplements, shake and aloe at the specified times of day you can keep hunger at bay. Days 3 to 9 are a lot easier as larger and more filling meals are introduced alongside the aloe and supplements and it is recommended that you do carry out some exercise even if it is only a brisk walk. With the programme you get a book to guide you through the nine days including space to record your progress and weigh and measure yourself. Unlike other programmes you can weigh and measure yourself regularly throughout the programme on days 3, 6 and 9. This is so encouraging as you really can see the results that quickly. My Results In total I lost 10lbs in 9 days and 1cm off my arms, 3 cm off my waist, 5cm off my hips and 1.5cm off my chest. To say I am delighted is an understatement and if I am honest I did not exercise every day but most days. The hardest thing for me was staying off coffee but surprisingly after the first couple of days I did not miss it and I felt lighter and had more energy. Thanks to the Clean 9 programme I am one step closer to the new me and fitting into my dress for the awards, not to mention all the lovely comments I have had off people who have complimented me on looking slimmer and they did not even know I was trying! There is a further programme available from Foreverliving called ‘F.I.T.1’ to follow on from this which I am now keen to get my hands on to keep up the momentum and the fantastic results I have seen. Scoliosis Scoliosis is a medical condition in which a person's spine is curved. The spine might look like the letter ‘C’ or ‘S’ from behind. Sometimes symptoms are not obvious, but they can include: • Backache or low-back pain • Tired feeling in the spine after sitting or standing for a long time • Uneven hips or shoulders • Spine curves more to one side • One shoulder blade that appears more prominent than the other • Uneven waist Scoliosis can be seen at any age but it is most common in those over 10 years of age. Signs and symptoms typically begin during the growth spurt that occurs just prior to puberty. Scoliosis is about two times more common in girls than boys. If a scoliosis curve gets worse, the spine will also rotate or twist in addition to curving side to side. This causes the ribs on one side of the body to stick out further than on the other side. Severe scoliosis can cause back pain and difficulty in breathing. Treatment depends on many things: • The cause of scoliosis • Where the curve is in your spine • How big the curve is • If your body is still growing Complications of scoliosis can include: • Low back pain • Lower self-esteem • Breathing problems (in severe scoliosis) • Persistent pain if there is wear and tear of the spine bones • Spine or nerve damage from an uncorrected curve or spinal surgery There are various forms of scoliosis but to keep this simple I will classify it in only two forms - structural and functional. Structural scoliosis refers to developmental scoliosis which developes as a child is growing. Functional scoliosis is where the spine is normal but an abnormal curve develops because of a problem somewhere else in the body. This is more common in adults than children. This article focuses on structural scoliosis. School screening programs have helped to identify many cases of scoliosis. This allows people to be treated with various means such as osteopathy, observation or bracing. These, it is hoped, may avoid the need for surgery in many cases. Most people with scoliosis can live full, productive and normal lives.

24

Osteopathic treatment involves looking at the curve of the spine from the sides, front and back and also the symmetry of the body to see if the hips and shoulders are at the same height. The range of motion, muscle strength and reflexes may also be checked. The treatment may include osteopathic manipulative treatment to the pelvis and the head, the rib cage, the abdominal wall, the back muscles and the fascial mechanism of the body as well as the area manifesting the spinal curve. In addition to, but not in place of the manipulative treatment, some simple exercises may be given to perpetuate the benefit of the treatment. THIS ARTICLE ‘SCOLIOSIS’ IS FOR INFORMATION ONLY AND IS NOT A SUBSTITUTE FOR MEDICAL ADVICE. PLEASE SEE VIKKI WOOLLETT FOR AN INDIVIUAL DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT PLAN.

Red Carpet Attire For The Daxi With the Daxi Business Awards just around the corner many of us may find ourselves initially excited about the prospect of attending the biggest event of the year but then the moment of panic strikes when you suddenly think.... What should I wear? Formal, Style, Colour, all these aspects need to be considered. Ladies and Gentlemen, there really is nothing to worry about, it’s actually quite simple. Gentlemen

Let’s start with the Gents because like it or not it’s always easier for the gents and by that, I mean there are only three major rules to follow for gents and then you can’t really go wrong. 1st rule - Tie or bow tie is a must. 2nd rule - Jeans, Trainers or T-Shirts are a big no-no. 3rd rule - Tuxedo, suit or formal jacket accompanied with nice classic trousers or at the very least, shirt, tie and trousers. Colour wise men in formal attire can choose from black, grey or a variety of different coloured jackets and trousers just keep it classic. Use your imagination on the shirt colour, the tie or bow tie, keeping classic matching or complimenting colours for the trousers and jacket. Also shoes are very important. Most gents don’t wear formal shoes that much here in Cyprus so comfort and smartness are a must. Make sure shoes are nicely polished and accessorise with tie pins and cuff links to give that ‘dapper’ polished look.

Style: For this kind of event you also have quite a bit of choice with different styles of evening dresses. There is the classic princess shaped long gown which is a hooped shape at the bottom, the mermaid shape which is very flattering and ideal for those with a fuller figure. There is also the classic long body wrap dress or the two piece gowns a combination of either a corset top with a rich layered long skirt or the Spanish model look with a rich, feminine top paired with a long pencil skirt. For the more conservative ladies out there that want to avoid long evening gowns there are some stunning knee length classic formal and cocktail dresses which are always right for such an official event especially when accompanied with a pair of gorgeous heels and an elegant clutch bag.

Ladies

As far as the Ladies are concerned things are a lot more complicated and challenging. Women have to consider everything from the type of formal dress: evening or cocktail, colour scheme, jewellery, hair, nails, makeup, shoes and bag.

Colours: Let’s talk about choosing the colour first. We have all tried and tested, black, red or black and white gowns which are always a safe and classy choice and are easier to accessorize. For that extra special look you can also go with a bit of a glitter. Gold or silver embroidered evening dresses are very spectacular and they really stand out when you are posing for those ‘all important’ red-carpet photos. When we are talking about formal & black tie events grey, navy blue, mauve, cream and dark green colour dresses are also fantastic choices.

Accessorise Your Assets! Let’s be honest here ladies, half of the finished look is the hair style that you choose, the make-up and your jewellery and accessories. Organise these well and you are half way there! All of us Ladies have something that we really like about ourselves, for instance if you have nice arms and hands then show them off by choosing an attractive bracelet and a sleeveless dress. A nice neck line and shoulders will look beautiful with an off the shoulder dress, a stunning necklace and your hair up. Last but not least, wear your smile to complete your stunning look. After all its not every day you get to be photographed walking down the red carpet in the spotlight of fame and glamour! Written by Elena Leontiou

The Spy, By Paulo Coelho

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

Paulo Coelho enchants us one more time with his ability to turn stories into beautiful masterpieces. His latest novel ‘The Spy’ was published in November 2016. This piece of written art describes the beauty behind the story of Mata Hari. Written as a series of letters, The Spy tells the unforgettable story of a woman who dared to break the conventions of her time and who paid the price for it. It starts when she arrived in Paris without any financial resources. After escaping from her violent husband, the strong will of survival drove Mata to become a symbol of independent women.

Captain Jack Sparrow takes us to another breath taking adventure. With a budget of 320 million US dollars, Johnny Depp and the team of bad pirates return to the screen. We are waiting the first projection of the movie in May 2017. Salazar escapes from the Devil's Triangle and is determined to kill every pirate at sea including him. Capt. Jack's only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artefact that bestows upon its possessor total control over the seas.

After a couple of months, she becomes one of the most elegant women in the country. Her exotic dances and eccentric feminine sexuality win the attention of many rich men. Due to her bravery to dare the moral and social norms of the society, she was accused of espionage. The novel digs deeply into the intrinsic emotions of the complex historical figure. ‘Forgive but do not forget or you will be hurt again. Forgiveness changes perspectives, while forgetting may make you lose the lesson’.

Palliative Care What is palliative care? Palliative care is care given to improve the quality of life of patients who have a serious or life-threatening disease, such as cancer. The goal of palliative care is to prevent or treat, as early as possible, the symptoms and side effects of the disease and its treatment, in addition to the related psychological, social, and spiritual problems. The goal is not to cure. Palliative care is also called comfort care, supportive care and symptom management.

Is there any research that shows palliative care is beneficial? Yes. Research shows that palliative care and its many components are beneficial to patient and family health and well-being. A number of studies in recent years have shown that patients who have their symptoms controlled and are able to communicate their emotional needs and have a better experience with their medical care. Their quality of life and physical symptoms improve.

When is palliative care used in cancer care? Palliative care is given throughout a patient’s experience with cancer. It should begin at diagnosis and continue through treatment, follow-up care, and the end of life. Who gives palliative care? Although any medical professional may provide palliative care by addressing the side effects and emotional issues of cancer, some have a particular focus on this type of care. A palliative care specialist is a health professional who specialises in treating the symptoms, side effects and emotional problems experienced by patients. The goal is to maintain the best possible quality of life. Often, palliative care specialists work as part of a multidisciplinary team to coordinate care. This palliative care team may consist of doctors, nurses, registered dieticians, pharmacists, and social workers. People do not give up their primary care physician to receive palliative care. If a person accepts palliative care, does it mean he or she won’t get cancer treatment? No. Palliative care is given in addition to cancer treatment. However, when a patient reaches a point at which treatment to destroy the cancer is no longer warranted, palliative care becomes the total focus of care. It will continue to be given to alleviate the symptoms and emotional issues of cancer. Palliative care providers can help ease the transition to end-of-life care. Where do cancer patients receive palliative care? Cancer centres and hospitals often have palliative care specialists or staff. They may also have a palliative care team that monitors and attends to patient and family needs. Cancer centres may also have programs or clinics that address specific palliative care issues, such as pain management or psychosocial issues. A patient may also receive palliative care at home, either under a physician’s care or through a hospice, or at a facility such as a Nursing Agency that offers long-term care. How do people talk about palliative care or decide what they need? Patients and their loved ones should ask their doctor about palliative care. In addition to discussing their needs for symptom relief and emotional support, patients and their families should consider the amount of communication they need. What people want to know about their diagnosis and care varies with each person. It’s important for patients to tell their doctor about what they want to know, how much information they want, and when they want to receive it. 32

What Technological Innovations can we Expect in 2017? Mobile Phones iphone 8 - As 10 years have elapsed since first appearing on the market, we can guess that the next iphone’s version may be Apple’s most innovative phone. These are likely to be the technological features: entirely glass design, LED display to improve image resolution, no home key, new screen dimensions and wireless recharging. Samsung - The Korean manufacturer will surely release Galaxy 8 and talks are reported that it may be a foldable phone on which they have been working for years. This may also be confirmed by the fact that recently they have filed a patent for such a device. Gaming Sony - with the new Play Station 4 Pro and Microsoft, with the latest version of Xbox, aim towards 4K resolution games and virtual reality through appropriate viewers. Nintendo - plan to release the new console Nintendo Switch which is due to be on the market in March and which will be their first hybrid console running either on TV or as portable device. PC The trend goes towards the portable computer, increasingly thin and light, but it is most likely to be the year of the final success of the so-called ‘2 in 1’, namely those portable computers with a detachable keyboard that turns them into tablets. One of the best examples may be the new Surface Pro by Microsoft, expected to be available on the market at the beginning of 2017. IOT (Internet of things) The term ‘internet of things’ is a neologism used in telecommunications referring to those physical devices connected to the internet. In 2017 we will witness the spread of home devices that connect to the net: thermostats, video surveillance systems, control systems for appliances and sockets operated from PC or smartphone while you are away from the home. Also e-commerce tools to order products directly from home like the Dash Buttons, where you just have to push it and it communicates to the supplier’s server (in this case Amazon) that you ran out of tomato sauce, toilet paper or detergent and you will get such products delivered to your door. “One day I'm going to buy a Rolls-Royce” - Jack Kay's Story That's what a teenage boy promised himself when he looked at a Rolls-Royce parked in Bolton town centre many years ago. In 1982, Jack bought a 1973 Bentley T finished in two tone brown over gold, which had the registration number 1 BNM - but it's not a Rolls-Royce is it, you may be thinking. It is in fact exactly the same as a Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow with different badging and design of the radiator shell. The profile of the bonnet had to be reshaped because of that. The bumper and hubcaps were also different. The engine valve covers with the 'Bentley' logo were used when available. Jack owned this car in the Manchester area for six years and only sold it because of the vandalism that was inflicted on the car’s bodywork. He explained that there seemed to be a resentment against the owners of those types of cars and estimated that it had been in the body shop on a dozen occasions. Jack retained the registration number 1 BNM which he transferred to his next car, a 1979 Mercedes Benz 500 SEL. He was never really happy with this car though because he found the ride too hard and felt all of the bumps on poor road surfaces, so he sold it 8 months later to buy a Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit, again transferring the 1 BNM registration. This 1985 model was only 4 years old and was finished in Ocean Blue with Magnolia leather interior with blue piping. Jack was now living in Bolton and never had the problems with vandalism that he had with the Bentley. He did however, whilst visiting Manchester, have the car broken into when the passenger quarter light was smashed to gain access to the glove box (which unknown to the intruder was in fact unlocked) and was forced open damaging the woodwork. It took 9 months to conclude the damage rectification, necessitating the whole dashboard being replaced as matching the walnut colour and grain could not be achieved to an acceptable standard. The reason for the break in was to steal the car's service records, presumably to alter and use for a similar car! Owning a Rolls-Royce is quite an expensive and time consuming commitment as Jack explained. "I used this car as my main transport and it would only do 12 miles to the gallon. I also cleaned the car myself because I was never happy with the standard when someone else did it. With a car of this prestige, it has to be kept immaculate all the time and serviced at the correct mileage or time intervals. Luckily for me, I had a chap that specialised in Rolls-Royce and Bentley cars whose charges were reasonable. He also inspected this car before I bought it because although it might look ok, it may also need a great deal of money spent on it! I owned the car for 17 years, only selling it because I moved to Cyprus - it would have cost too much in duties and of course the road tax would have been massive. I sold the number plate separately to the car for £11,000. Although I miss the Rolls-Royce, I fulfilled my ambition to own one and now that I am retired and living in Cyprus I am happy with the memories." Written by Graham and Jenny Inch 36

Make Your Bathroom Safer A New Year’s Resolution for those of us becoming less abled: make your bathroom safer! All the statistics tell us that most accidents happen in the home and that’s mainly because we don’t take enough time to think about what we are doing. I’m sure a friend won’t mind my mentioning the time she stood on the loo seat - and went right through it. She made light of it at the time (one leg jammed in the loo was rather comic) but she had broken several bones in her foot and ended up having a medical boot. When I first started writing articles for Daxi 6 months ago, I concentrated on how to help you find or achieve a ‘look’ by little shortcuts or tricks of the trade, but to make major changes in the bathroom you need the help of professionals, either in design or in fitting, or sometimes both. We also need to remember that balance and mobility problems do not just affect those of us getting older, and that the bathroom should be a pleasant place to be, whatever your age, whether you live here, holiday, or rent out your house or apartment. Concentrating on safety, there’s only space here to look at what I consider to be the two main danger areas: the first is slipping and the second possible scalding. A great quick fix for slipping is an anti-slip spray we found at Interhome in Paralimni, but this sort of thing is now much more widely available (in case you’d given up looking for it!) and of course can be equally useful used outside on those tiles that should have been anti-slip in the first place… ‘Hurdling the bath’ is another slip hazard - as is getting out of it - so changing it for a shower with level tray or wet room floor (and adding grab/safety bars) is high on the list. A thermostatic shower valve is the answer to possible scalding, but not a standard item on the plumber’s bathroom list, it would seem. Even a luxury hotel I had the good fortune to visit recently had a manual shower valve with erratic pressure, and alternating stone cold and scorching hot water. However, if you can’t find the specific item you need, virtually anything is available by mail order these days, sometimes at a premium price, and it depends on how important it is to you. Always seek advice from a professional before ordering, as getting it wrong is even more expensive. And making the bathroom a pleasant place to be for all ages and requirements? A challenge to look at next month! Kindly Written by Corinne Twining - Interior Designer. Trees and Their Roots

Daxi Compost Corner

Sometimes when we plant trees in our gardens we do not take into consideration the problems that may be caused by the root systems growing underground. There are two sorts of roots, big ones that act as an anchor branching over a large area or some plants having tap roots that go straight down with branching roots growing off it. Growing off these large roots are the second kind of root, the fine roots which take in water and nutrients. Plants can take in solid foods, they suck up minerals that are drawn up through the plant and then release the water as evaporation through the leaves.

We eat more potatoes than any other vegetable and they will grow in most well drained soils. You do not even have to have a plot of land, you can grow your own potatoes in a large container or dustbin that has drainage holes in it. Buy some seed potatoes from your local stockist, these will be free from disease. Put a three inch layer of compost in the bottom of your container. Potatoes grow up not down so not a lot of soil is needed underneath. Cut your seed potatoes in half and plant them in the soil with the eyes on the top. Plant them about 5 to 7 inches apart and then cover them in another 3 inches of compost. When your potatoes have sprouted and the plant is about 5 inches, cover them again with another 2 inches of compost. Keep repeating this process until your dustbin is full. DO NOT FORGET TO WATER AT LEAST ONCE A DAY. When the leaves turn yellow on your plants it is time to harvest your crop. Stop watering for a week then you can tip out your soil and dig out all your potatoes. Leave the potatoes to cure for 2 weeks before using.

A problem with roots is that they spread underground to places you do not want them to go. Not so long ago a neighbour had a problem with a roof that would not drain away after the rain, the drain pipe from the roof went under his patio and into his garden area but the drain pipe had been covered with top soil. After digging out the drain in the soil it was found that one of the trees had sent out a root straight into the pipe! When it was pulled out it measured about 16 feet in length with a dense network of fine roots causing the pipe to block. Roots can be very invasive so take into consideration the roots when planting trees in your garden and the damage that they can cause under your block paving. It is easy to see the damage done by the roots of the Ficus trees planted along the road side and the way they lift all the paving.

SALES - RENTALS - DEEDS - MORTGAGES - LEGALITY - ADVICE

Communal Fees and Potential Buyers To all of our lovely readers, we welcome you to the first property news of 2017 and wish you a very happy, healthy and wealthy 2017! It’s January and we are now in the middle of our (very short) winter. For those of us in the property industry this is our planning period - time to organise the marketing strategy, work on partnerships and fire up ideas to bring in new buyers for 2017. 2016 was a better year for the property market although perhaps not as good as we had hoped. At the time of writing this article, the final figures for the year were not yet published, so we will review this overall in the next edition. Something very interesting has become apparent over the last year and the team have been talking about it regularly at our weekly meetings. We sell a lot of apartments in various areas but more and more the communal fees and maintenance are becoming an issue with new buyers. They might totally love an apartment but if the annual charges are too high they don’t make an offer at all, or, if they are too low and the block is poorly maintained they will do the same and this is a pattern that has been repeated regularly over the last 12 months. The question of communal fees has become such a hot topic that we must now display them on our website. Also when viewing with a client, it must be listed on documentation supplied to them. If the communal fees are perceived to be high versus the quality of the complex, it is a serious concern to the potential buyers and in many cases this will sway their decision towards something more reasonable. On the other side of the coin, complexes might have low or zero maintenance fees but are not well maintained; closed swimming pools, lifts out of operation, untidy communal areas, dirty stairwells etc. are typically selling at a reduction of 10-15% over those which are well maintained. The overall message is that communal fees and communal management are hugely important in terms of the value of your property. There are some extremely well run complexes in our areas that are beautifully managed and presented, others that are now starting to reap the rewards of good management and still more that are eyesores. Every one of you can make a huge difference!

Communal Property Advice 5 While there are many benefits to owning a property in a communal building, development or resort, there are also additional concerns. Your fellow owners and neighbours become part of your investment, almost as if they were indirect partners. They can negatively affect your investment as much as a bad business partner can affect a business. This is why it’s essential when purchasing property with communal facilities that you properly understand the unique aspects relating to communal property ownership. This issue: Communal Maintenance V’s Site Improvement If you missed it in last month’s article, I discussed the benefits of selecting the right location for your AGM to gain more owner involvement by increasing attendance at the Annual General Meeting. In this article I will discuss the benefits of looking at more than just maintaining a building/resort. ‘You must spend money to make Money’ - Plautus I know before many of you have even got this far, you may be thinking, REALLY? We just about keep to the current budget and you’re talking about spending money on extras! Ok, I understand that you may be finding gaining collections from owners difficult and have unit owners grumbling about how much they need to pay already. So think about a company that’s just ticking on, focusing only on keeping the lights on and not looking to the future. A business consultant would look at this and say that the company is stuck in a rut, that it should invest in themselves by doing something different to attract new customers and move the company forward before they start going backwards. Well a communal building operates very similar to a company, you have income, expenditure and a board of directors (committee). The only thing different is, you don’t have the option to get new ‘customers’, so you need to work on keeping your existing ‘customers’ happy at all costs. This is the problem, unit owners who are unexcited or apathetic about their properties are going to be less likely to be involved and more likely to pay late or not at all. This starts a cycle that can cause major financial problems for the buildings. While paying communal fees is a legal responsibility, it takes a lot of work to get the money in but it’s far easier to get payments from happy owners than sad or uninterested ones. So by including in the budget some money to be spent on

visually obvious improvements, rather than just focusing on keeping the corridors clean and the lights on, this may be the difference in your income rates increasing, staying the same or slowly declining. RECIPES - FOOD - DRINKS - INGREDIENTS - TIPS

Meatloaf Stuffed with Spinach, Ham and Cheese I hope everyone had a really nice Christmas and I would like to wish everyone a very happy and healthy new year from all of us here at Blueberries. For this month’s recipe I am making meatloaf, but not just any old meatloaf! I stuffed mine with cheese, ham and spinach and then wrapped it in streaky bacon and served it with gravy. This makes a beautiful change from a normal roast dinner and can be eaten cold the next day with a nice salad of your choice. INGREDIENTS: 1 kilo of prime mince beef 2 eggs 1 cup of breadcrumbs 1 ½ teaspoon of salt 1 teaspoon of pepper 2 to 3 teaspoons of garlic mince, or a teaspoon of garlic powder (this is optional if you are not keen on garlic) 4 to 6 slices of mozzarella cheese or Edam 1 packet of baby spinach leafs 10 to 12 slices of streaky bacon METHOD: 1. Mix your mincemeat with the 2 eggs, breadcrumbs, salt, pepper and garlic. 2. Get yourself a square oven tray and place a sheet of aluminum foil or cling film to cover the whole tray, making sure it over laps over at the top. 3. Place your meat on top of the foil or cling film and pat it down to make a firm and even square. 4. Cover the mince with your ham (streaky bacon), if it takes only 4 that’s fine (don’t worry if you need all 6) 5. Then layer the slice cheese on top of the ham (streaky bacon). 6. Place the spinach evenly on top of the cheese. Now take the end of the cling film or the foil and roll your mince into a nice firm roll a bit like a Swiss roll. 7. Put it in the fridge for half hour to firm up, then discard the foil or cling film. 8. When the roll is firm, wrap it in another foil, the same size as last time. This time it must be foil because we are going to cook with this. 9. Place your streaky bacon on the foil, overlapping so we can roll the meatloaf again. 10. Cover the end of the meatloaf with bacon and using your foil roll it up tightly like a big sausage. 11. Put it on a tray and bake for about 180°c for 25 mins on medium/hot heat. 12. After 25 mins, take it out and remove your foil carefully. If you have problems let it cool a little more. 13. Put it back in the oven at 260c for about another 20 to 25 mins or until the bacon is nice and crispy. 14.Take it out and leave it for approx. 10 mins to cool down. Slice and serve either on its own or with gravy, then add your accompanists. Enjoy.

LAW - FINANCES - YOUR RIGHTS - INVESTMENTS - ADVICE - GUIDANCE

Financial Security in an Ever-Changing World Michael Doherty, CEO of Woodbrook Group, which offers unbiased financial advice in Cyprus and around the globe would like to talk about the importance having a life insurance. In an increasingly uncertain world, financial security is essential. If you were to suffer a serious injury or illness, or worse, the last thing you or your loved ones want to worry about is the ability to cope financially. Since no one can predict what the future holds, it is vital that we plan for all eventualities and this includes making sure that life insurance is part of your overall financial plan. We often ignore life insurance - however, for a relatively low cost, it is a powerful tool to help meet a wide range of personal and financial objectives. Most people are familiar with life insurance as a way of providing funds to replace lost income in the event that the family ‘breadwinner’ passes away. However, it can also be used to pay off existing liabilities such as mortgages and bank loans, as well providing funds for school fees for children and grandchildren. At Woodbrook Group, when discussing life insurance with clients we focus on four key areas: Income Replacement: Especially pertinent for younger families - as the ‘breadwinner’ you need to make sure you have sufficient life cover in place to protect your family in case the unexpected happens. Wealth Replacement: A life policy is an inexpensive way to pass significant wealth to your next generation. It also allows you to spend your own personal wealth today rather than worry about leaving a cash legacy. Estate Planning: Life Insurance written in Trust will make sure there are funds available to pay estate duties and other taxes. Business Planning: If you are a business owner you may rely on a number of key people for the successful operation of your company. Keyman, Partnership and Shareholder Covers are all key aspects to any business. If you are from the UK and you have existing cover it is also important to make sure that you check your policy wording to make sure you are covered when living outside of the UK as many providers do not cover you beyond mainland UK. Our team and myself would be happy to provide more detailed information and advise you which provider and solution could be the best for your unique situation. Please don’t hesitate to give us a call if you would like to know more about this topic or if you are interested in a free no obligation quote. Geocaching in Larnaca Every year in the winter months, the Salt Lakes in Larnaca are host to thousands of migrating flamingos. An impressive sight to see in the many photos which pop up online every year, but one I had never actually seen for myself. So just before the boys went back to school I suggested we drive to Larnaca and have a look for ourselves. After our recent geocaching adventure, I thought I'd take a look at the app to see if there were any near to our destination. The boys were excited to see that there were actually several. There was a geocache at the Kamares Aqueduct which caught my eye and we decided to head there first. I'd seen photos of the aqueduct and had always fancied going to have a look, but then always decided it was a bit pointless to drive there and have the boys moan that there was nothing to do, plus the fact that I didn't know where it was! Of course having set the GPS on my phone for the cache finding, the aqueduct was not a problem. It was quite interesting driving round backstreets and seeing the roads of Larnaca that I'd never been to before. It started to rain on the way there, something that would usually have me in a bad mood before arrival but I was unusually optimistic and to my surprise the rain stopped by the time we got out of the car. For a change, we were dressed for the weather and the boys were surprised that we let them go walking in ankle deep clay-like mud! We walked along following the GPS but somewhere along the way, we took the wrong path, which ran parallel to the cache. We got down to 60 metres before it started going up again. Aaron took a walk across the long grass and found he was getting closer but we came to the conclusion we wouldn't be able to get to the cache due to the wet overgrown bushes. After retracing our steps and discovering that we were on the wrong path, we decided to give it one more try, plus the boys were desperate to run over the bridge we had passed. As a child I loved steps and demanded to go up any we saw, for my boys its bridges! Of course, I don't want to spoil the search for you, should you wish to try and find the cache yourself but we found it in the end. It involved a bit of an ‘off path adventure’ but there was much excitement as we located it and thanks to the GPS we even found a short cut back to the car! By now, we were starting to lose the light but we decided to swing back past the Salt Lakes on the way home, stopping to find another two caches on the way! After all that, we never did get to see the flamingos! Pet of the Month Beautiful Ella is a lovely girl looking for a forever home. She is a mix breed, measures 49cm shoulder height and was born in January 2012. Ella is quite energetic and would enjoy playtime and walks. This gentle and easy going dog would suit any home. She is great with other dogs but a little over excited about cats. Ella has been at the shelter sometime now and is in desperate need for the love of a home. Spayed and fully vaccinated.

Ask Gina Dear Gina, During the summer my kids brought a stray kitten home and I let them keep it as long as it was kept outside. Everything was fine up until now because the kitten stayed in a box outside under the veranda. As a young boy I was allergic to cats and now I don't want the cat to come inside the house but my kids and wife say that it's much too cold for the cat to stay outside all winter. I have bought a cat basket and put it under the porch stairs but it now jumps in through the window! Am I being too dramatic? I keep thinking about all that cat hair all over the house! Pavlo, Frenaros Dear Pavlo, I don't think you have much choice. If the cat wants to get in the house it will find a way believe me! You see with cats it's like a deal. A cat thinks like this, ‘if you feed me, I have the right to do whatever I want and whenever I want’. When you own a dog you choose them to be your pet, with cats it's the other way round, they choose you to be their owner! Are you worried about the cat hair all over the house because of your allergy or the mess? Did you know that if you’re allergic to cats it’s probably sticky particles of cat skin that make you sneeze? These attach to shoes and clothes and can hang around for a very long time. You might not be allergic to them any more, nowadays you can get tested to see if you are still allergic to cats. As for the cat hair all over the house, trust me it’s not as bad as you think. So come on give it a go, bring the cat basket inside the house and maybe add some cat nip powder in it so that your cat will sleep in it and not on the settee or beds. Regards, Gina Happy New Year Daxi readers!! I hope you had a wonderful Christmas and that 2017 will bring you everything you wish for.
