Milestones 1. EYE CONTACT (6 - 8 weeks)
This first milestone lets you know that your infant's on track.
2. SMILE
(6 - 8 weeks) Not to be confused with a smile related to digestive gas, a genuine smile happens in response to someone else's smile.
3. COOING (8 weeks)
Sweet little sounds like "ooh" and "ahh" start happening spontaneously.
4. BABBLING (3 - 4 months)
Cooing expands when Baby starts to use his tongue. At 6 - 8 months, Baby will start babbling back to you.
5. REACHING & GRABBING (5 - 7 months)
Using hands and arms, Baby shows an interest in touching and holding. Create opportunities for this.
6. ROLLING OVER (5 months +)
At this age, Baby will lift his head, push up on his arms and try rocking. Using his head and arms in a "mini" push up, he will amaze you when he flips from front to back.
NOTE!
Babies vary on exact milestone timelines. If you have any concerns about your baby's development, consult with your pediatrician.

BREAST FEEDING How do YOU Roll? SOME MOTHERS SAY THERE'S NO SHAME IN BREASTFEEDING IN PUBLIC: CONQUER YOUR FEAR AND JUST DO IT! OTHER MOTHERS SAY IT'S APPROPRIATE TO COVER UP WHEN BREASTFEEDING IN PUBLIC.

Y
ou survived childbirth and learned the art of a successful latch, but if you have decided to breastfeed your baby, there is one final frontier you will need to conquer: the art of nursing in public. “Breastfed babies, especially newborns, nurse frequently,” says Holly Robinson, a registered nurse and international boardcertified lactation consultant. “No matter how well you plan, eventually you are going to find yourself out of the house with a hungry baby, so it’s important to be prepared.” The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends exclusive breastfeeding for about the first six months, and continued breastfeeding — along with the introduction of complimentary solids — for one year or more. While not every mother chooses to breastfeed, those who do are likely to breastfeed longer and enjoy the experience more by learning to nurse in public with confidence and ease. PUBLIC
BREAST FEEDING PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT For many new moms, breastfeeding presents enough of a challenge in the comfort of your own living room, so the thought of nursing in public — where other people might see you — can be terrifying. To boost your confidence, practice in front of a mirror so you can catch a glimpse of what others will (and will not) be able to see. When you're ready to venture out of the house for the first time, consider attending a local breastfeeding support group or grabbing coffee with a supportive friend. “I started small — going to the same coffee shop every day — for practice,” says breastfeeding mom Rhianna Mathias. “It was a shop I’d patronized a lot before Baby, so I was familiar with the staff and felt comfortable there. Nursing in a group setting (as in a mom’s group in the early days) was also a comfortable place to practice and gain confidence.”
FIND YOUR COMFORT ZONE Some mothers feel totally at ease lifting their shirts to nourish their newborns, no matter where they happen to be. Others prefer a bit more privacy. No matter what your personal preference, be prepared when you head out in public and scope out the setting as soon as you arrive. Look for a comfortable chair or bench where you'll be able to sit and nurse when Baby gets hungry. If you're dining out and prefer to breastfeed discreetly, ask for a corner booth or table so you can sit with your back to other patrons. Many shopping centers and museums also offer private nursing stations as a courtesy to breastfeeding mothers. “I found that corners were my friends because I could simply turn a bit to get her started,” says Melissa McAlpine of her experience nursing her daughter in public. “After the baby is latched on, there’s not really anything to see, so I could swivel back.”
14 • winter 2018
DRESS FOR SUCCESS
KNOW YOUR RIGHTS
The right clothes and accessories make all the difference when you’re out in public and Baby decides it's time for a meal. Wear a stretchy sports bra that can be pulled aside as needed, or learn how to unhook and lower the cups of your nursing bra with one hand. Many breastfeeding mothers like to pair a specially designed nursing tank top with a cardigan or loose blouse, since the top can be lifted up while the tank still covers your middle (where many of us have stretch marks we prefer to keep hidden). Other mothers prefer to simply unbutton a few top buttons. A fussy baby is what draws attention, so wear clothes that make it easy to get baby latched on quickly.
Keep in mind, when it comes to nursing in public, the law is on your side. Tennessee supports and protects breastfeeding families.
Don't Cover Up!
“I'm not [covering up] to feed child. I think Americans really
my need
to quit sexualizing every moment of life and get a grip. The mother and baby aren't thinking anything other than feeding and bonding time. People AND their children see more of the female anatomy at the local swimming hole or walking through the mall and see a Victoria's Secret advertisement." — Samantha Downing via Facebook
A few key accessories can also make nursing in public easier. Learn how to nurse while carrying baby in a sling or Baby carrier. Try wearing a fashionable scarf or poncho that can double as a cover when Baby is breastfeeding. Mom of two Melody Meiners is a fan of nursing covers, specifically the kind that have weights in one side or that tie around your neck and tent up. “It makes switching sides so much easier if you prefer to stay covered,” she says.
Baby Guide
TENNESSEE LAWS: • A mother may breastfeed in any public or private place she is authorized to be. • Breastfeeding shall not be considered public indecency or nudity, obscene or sexual conduct. • Local governments shall not prohibit breastfeeding in public by local ordinance. • Employers must accommodate breastfeeding mothers at work. Also be aware that, sensationalized news stories aside, most people genuinely support your right to nurse in public, and mothers do it every day. “I never had any rude comments, in 10 years of nursing, only supportive ones,” says breastfeeding veteran and mom of four Jennifer Heffern. Martine Samocha, who also breastfed four children, adds that “even though you think everyone is watching you, you're mostly being ignored.”
FAKE IT ‘TIL YOU MAKE IT If you feel nervous about breastfeeding your baby in public, you're not alone. “The first few times can seem uncomfortable,” admits mom of two Tammie Egloff, “but it gets easier.” You will gain confidence gradually, so in the early days and weeks, smile politely at passers-by and rest assured that the more you nurse in public, the less self-conscious you will become. “Eventually,” says Robinson, “you will appreciate the freedom that comes with knowing that, no matter where you are, you always have the perfect food ready to feed your baby.” Alyssa Chirco is a freelance journalist and mother of two, as well as a former breastfeeding mom. She has nursed babies in restaurants, on airplanes and even at the beach.

THE RISE OF POSITIONAL PLAGIOCEPHALY (aka: flat head) BY KIERA ASHFORD
E
It's alarming to be told your little one has a misshapen head. But, don't worry. His little flat spot can be corrected.
ver so quietly, you tiptoe into the nursery to check on your newborn for the second, no third … oh, who are we kidding? It’s probably the 10th time tonight! Yep, still breathing. But, what you should be checking is the position of his head as he’s lying on his back. Is he facing the same direction he was last night or the night before? Did you turn him around and find that he’s facing the same favorite direction yet once again? This, among other things — like not enough tummy time — can cause your child to have an unsightly flat spot on his noggin. But, don’t worry! There are ways around it.
16 • winter 2018
RISE IN FLAT HEAD CASES When the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) introduced the Back-to-Sleep Campaign back in 1994, the objective was to cut the amount of SIDS-related incidences. While it’s widely known that this campaign has cut the risks of SIDS tremendously, it does have a side effect. “Back-sleeping obviously increases the likelihood that babies might develop flattening of the head (positional plagiocephaly),” says Amanda Petty Gammel, D.O., a pediatrician at Murfreesboro Medical Clinic. Gammel adds that there’s definitely been an increase in cases of positional plagiocephaly. The main cause, she says, is lying
Baby Guide
in the same position regularly and for long periods of time. “Because young babies’ skulls are still soft and malleable, they can adjust over time to adapt to the shape of the surface that they’re lying on, creating a flat spot in this area,” says Gammel. The AAP cautions that even though having your baby sleep on his back can lead to a flattened head, parents should not stop placing babies on their backs to sleep. “The recent rise in cases of plagiocephaly may also be related to increased awareness and recognition on the part of practitioners,” adds Gammel.
Y
CORRECTING FLAT HEADS While the look of your precious little one’s crown is not as appealing as you’d like, Gammel encourages parents not to worry so much. “Asymmetry of the skull that’s caused by positional molding doesn’t cause developmental delays,” says Gammel. “It’s primarily a cosmetic issue. It doesn’t harm brain development and typically doesn’t cause any lasting appearance problems.” If you feel that you’re bothered by the look of your baby’s flat head, there are simple ways you can correct it, although Baby will outgrow small flat spots on his own. This is done simply be spending more time on his belly or as he learns to sit up, more time off of his back. However, Gammel says, in progressive or severe cases, orthotic molding helmets may be considered. Surgery is rarely indicated. “Because the majority of infants improve by 6 months of age, repositioning should be attempted as initial treatment,” adds Gammel.
PREVENTING FLAT HEADS Take precautions to prevent your baby from ever getting a flat spot in the first place. Increased tummy time is the easiest way to do so. If Baby hates tummy time and still
spends most of his time sleeping, consider another way to prevent flat head while slowly increasing his tummy time attempts. “A baby should spend at least 30 - 60 minutes a day on it’s belly,” says Gammel. “Babies shouldn’t spend a prolonged period of time in a car seat or bouncy seat as this can also increase flattening and asymmetry of the skull,” she cautions. “Change the direction Baby lies in the crib each week,” says Gammel. “This change will encourage him to turn his head in different directions to avoid resting in the same position all the time.” The same goes for babies that favor one side, but Gammel says to try laying him down in a different position while awake and have something interesting to look at on the opposite side to encourage him to look the other way. You can also use the above methods on preemies if you suspect a flat spot is emerging. “Premature babies’ skulls are more malleable and therefore at a greater risk of positional plagiocephaly, but they’re also at a much higher risk of SIDS,” says Gammel. “The cosmetic inconvenience of a flat head does not outweigh the risk of dying,” she adds. Gammel says that holding your preemie more often when possible can also help reduce his chances of getting a flat spot.
Baby Guide
Besides, who doesn’t love a little more kangaroo time with their little love? Cuddling with him until he’s snoozing away promotes better bonding anyway. Now, as you go to place him in his crib, try to remember to change the direction in which you lay him down. Kiera Ashford is associate editor for this publication and mother of three children ages 11, 7 and 1. Each have had their own little flat spots pop up and go away on their own.
COMBAT FLAT HEAD SYNDROME WITH TORTLE tortle.com | $24.99 Baby can wear this beanie while laying in a car seat, sitting in a stroller, playing in a bouncer or napping in a crib. It has a cushy support roll that you place behind the ear of the side opposite that you want your baby to look. It keeps Baby from favoring one side to help prevent or correct flat head syndrome.

Hypnobabies
Self-hypnosis provides a more comfy birth experience
W
hen it comes to labor and delivery, it's safe to say all expectant moms aspire for a childbirth experience that's as comfortable and pain-free as possible. One way many moms achieve this is through childbirth hypnosis. Hypnobabies is a fully comprehensive childbirth class that's an option for moms-to-be. It's available in Middle Tennessee through Eden Birth (edenbirth.com) and Nashville Birth and Babies (nashvillebirthandbabies.com). "Not only do we teach the self-hypnosis techniques for having an easier and more comfortable birth, but we also teach about normal pregnancy and birth; stages of birth; diet and exercise choices to maintain a healthy and low-risk pregnancy; different positions one may use during labor; breastfeeding benefits; newborn procedures and more," says Summer Watt, RN, BSN, CCRN, HCHI, who teaches Hypnobabies through Eden Birth. Watt is also a four-time Hypnobabies mom, and she's expecting her fifth baby in January. "I am, of course, preparing for this birth using Hypnobabies once again," she adds. The benefits of childbirth hypnosis taught through Hypnobabies are numerous, says Kayla Smith, a Hypnobabies instructor and
VIP Midsouth
hypno-doula with Nashville Birth and Babies. "The hypnosis that we use helps to eliminate the fear, tension and pain cycle, which means Hypnobabies moms request fewer drugs or none at all. It encourages women to remain relaxed and confident during pregnancy," says Smith. She notes that many Hypnobabies moms have shorter births as the relaxation they experience helps create less tension between the groups of birthing muscles. Hypnobabies classes are typically six weeks long with at-home maintenance exercises. While Watt says self-hypnosis is great for a variety of moms, there are a few who should proceed with caution. "Prospective students with seizure and mood disorders should obtain permission from their physician prior to enrolling," she notes.
