8 RULES FOR VISITORS AND YOUR NEWBORN
E
verybody wants to "ooh and aah" over the new baby! That's wonderful and everything, but keep the following in mind for when you have visitors over to your home in the early weeks. • Ask visitors to wash hands when they arrive • Ask visitors to reschedule if they are sick • Permit visitors to see, not touch, the nursery • Ask visitors to kiss the baby on top of the head only • Oversee all visitors who want to hold your baby • Do not let anyone smoke around the baby • Say, "Yes!" when a visitor offers to bring a meal • Say, "Yes!" when a visitor offers to do a chore

Y
es, breastfeeding is good for your baby, but are you aware of how good it is for YOU? A new study published in Breastfeeding Medicine says you may not actually know how good it is for your body.
CONSIDER THIS: • Nursing moms reduce their risk of breast cancer by 3 - 4 percent for every 12 months they breastfeed in addition to a relative decrease of 7 percent for each baby born. • Women who breastfeed are less likely to develop ovarian cancer, Type 2 diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis. They also may have improved cardiovascular health. Source: March of Dimes

BABY
BITS FIND THE RIGHT PEDIATRICIAN FOR THE BABY
T
he first year of your baby's life is an important one. Your little love will see his pediatrician often during the first 12 months and receive various immunizations along the way. When you go to the hospital to deliver your baby, they'll want to know who your pediatrician is, so be ready. Consult with friends and family to get referrals for favorite pediatricians, then make appointments to interview them. Here are questions to ask when you go: • Will you see my baby in the hospital or another doctor?
Caring for an Infant When You Work at Home
P
lenty of new parents find themselves putting in extra hours of work at home on a daily basis. But how do you do it when you're on infant care? You just do it. But much can be learned from parents who have done it before. Here are helpful tips:
MASTER THE MINDSET Staying positive is crucial in keeping calm and multitasking. Do whatever it takes to live in the moment during this special time.
MUTE BUTTON You will be amazed at how ambidextrous you can be. Learn to hold Baby in your arms while
using your phone (and use that mute button). Keeping Baby close will keep him calm. Also, invest in a baby swing for when he is happy to sit nearby.
BE FLEXIBLE During these days home with your infant, the normal work day is no more. Realize that and prepare to work strange hours. Some days will go smoothly, most won't.
WORK IN INCREMENTS With a newborn you have to work in "pockets" of time. Get used to getting work done in unexpected moments.
HIRE HELP If you become overwhelmed by too much work and not enough time, consider hiring a baby sitter so you can get it done.
PATIENCE IS ALL Now is the time to practice patience with yourself, with your spouse and with your newborn.
DON'T NAP WHEN THE BABY NAPS Make an arrangement to share nighttime feedings so you get a little more sleep. That way, during the day, you can work when the baby sleeps. It's surprising how much you can accomplish in a one-hour block of time or more.
BABY CARRIER Babywearing is the best way to keep Baby close to you as you aim to accomplish tasks. It also lets you be hands-free, which means you can type, make calls and do just about anything else that needs doing. Source: workfromhome.com
• How soon after we leave the hospital will we see you? • What is the schedule for well-child checkups and immunizations? • How long are typical wait times at appointments? • How do you handle afterhour calls? • Which urgent care do you recommend? • What's your availability for last-minute needs? • Will you take my calls or will I speak to a nurse? • Do you provide acute care? After meeting different doctors, decide who you are most comfortable with. Were you rushed? Did you feel listened to? What were the office and support staff like? Be satisfied with your choice because you'll be with this doctor for years to come!

M IN A HIGH-RISK
HOW TO SUPPORT A MOM
PREGNANCY
WHEN YOU'RE EXPECTING AND DEEMED HIGH-RISK, EVERYTHING YOU KNOW ABOUT BEING PREGNANT GOES OUT THE WINDOW. BY SARAH LYONS
y first three pregnancies were easy. I felt great, barely had morning sickness, remained active and was able to maintain all of my pre-pregnancy activities. Then, I experienced a triplet pregnancy. Everything I knew about pregnancy went out the window when I found out at 21 weeks I was expecting, not one, but three babies. My head spun as the doctor told me my first goal was to make it three more weeks, which is considered viability — 24 weeks gestation and when a child will have a chance of survival outside the womb. My doctor told me getting off of my feet would improve my blood pressure and flow to the placenta and babies, and also decrease the pull of gravity and pressure on my cervix. (please turn the page)

NEW PARENT She also told me each and every day would make a difference. "Having a baby is a wonderful and joyful event," says Cornelia Graves, M.D., with Tennessee Maternal Fetal Medicine. "We want to make sure the mother and baby are both safe at the end of the journey," she adds. According to the March of Dimes, for every day your baby stays in your womb between weeks 23 - 26, survival odds increase by 2 - 4 percent. After 26 weeks, 80 percent of babies born survive; after 28 weeks, 96 percent make it. For weeks after receiving the news of my triplets, I barely slept. I read every book and blog I could find on high-order multiples pregnancy and prematurity. The information was overwhelming and terrifying. Once I came out of shock, I realized I had to move forward with a new normal for the health of my babies. Thankfully, I received a lot of support from my friends and family.
VISITS
Many moms with a high-risk pregnancies are put on bed rest at home or in the hospital. While resting in bed may sound like a nice vacation for a busy mom, after a day or so it actually is extremely boring and typically gives you too much time for worrying. Bed rest is lonely, so encourage visitors. When a friend offers to deliver a meal, say yes. A care package with movies, magazines and treats is also nice when stuck in bed.
HELP WITH THE OLDER KIDS
A mom experiencing a high-risk pregnancy may feel like she's letting her other kids down because she's not her normal self. Show support by offering to pick up the kids, even if it’s just for a couple hours. Driving the kids to school or activities is also a big help. Keeping the kids in their regularly scheduled activities helps lessen the anxiety they feel with the changes at home.

something up for you when she's out running errands. You can do your grocery shopping online and have it delivered or say "Yes" to having a friend pick your groceries up for you.
PROVIDE A MEAL
Providing meals for your family during your high-risk pregnancy is a huge help. When a friend asks to get a meal plan going for you, say "Yes." Suggest easy-toheat-up casseroles and freezer meals and let friends stock your pantry with quickfix meals and snacks.
HELP AROUND THE HOUSE
When faced with the question of “How can I help?” it is often difficult for a mom to come up with an exact answer. Be bold. Tell friends that your baseboards need attention as does the overwhelming load of laundry. Tell them you'll repay their efforts when you can. Or ... consider lining up a cleaning service until you're back on your feet — months from now.
CHECKUPS
A high-risk pregnancy usually warrants extra checkups. “I looked forward to the weekly scans,” says Loretta Jones, mom of triplets. “I only made it to 27 weeks, which was incredibly scary, but I felt better because I had just been at the doctor two days before.” Having weekly checkups and ultrasounds are common for high-risk pregnancies, and it can really put a mom’s mind at ease when she's given a thumbsup for the day. During a high-risk pregnancy, a mom often feels overwhelmed with the things she's missing due to bed rest including time with her spouse and other children, her work and normal daily responsibilities. Combined with worrying about the baby’s health, it's an extremely stressful time. By allowing friends and loved ones to assist you with the basic needs of your family like cooking, cleaning, errands and being a sounding board for her concerns and fears, you will relieve some of your stress so you can focus on your health and that of your baby. Sarah Lyons is a mother and freelance writer.
Baby Guide
TYPES OF BED REST In general, a pregnant woman who is diagnosed with a highrisk pregnancy is prescribed either one of two types of bed rest: • MODIFIED BED REST (MBR) This requires a pregnant woman to rest as much as possible, but it does not mean she has to remain in the bed at all times. Every doctor has a different definition of MBR, but for the most part it means that you can walk around your house, shower and take basic care of yourself. Usually you are told not to do laundry or lift any heavy items (or children) and not vacuum or scrub the floors. There may be an extra order of pelvic rest, as part of your MBR, and that just means no intercourse of any type. This can be a bummer for many moms, but if you are suffering a high-risk pregnancy, sex may be the furthest thing from your mind anyway. • STRICT BED REST (SBR) Limits a woman to bed for most of the time, usually with the exception of bathroom needs, unless you are asked to use a bed pan for many weeks. Any situation where periods of standing are necessary should be avoided. SURVIVE BED REST • Facetime or Skype with friends and far-away family • Decorate your room to please your senses • Pamper yourself • Watch Netflix • Stay off the Internet or search for success stories only

HEALTHY MAMA BAN "IFFY" HABITS IN PREGNANCY BY KIERA ASHFORD
Increase Baby's healthy development by taking good care of yourself.
B
eing pregnant brings an exciting turning point in life for you, but it can also come with some hard adjustments. When you're expecting a baby, you need to take a few hard looks at some of your habits. Maybe you love to exercise. Maybe you love to vape. Maybe you take prescription meds or smoke marijuana. Here's good info on what this may mean to your teeny, developing nugget.
EXCESSIVE EXERCISE You're on time every single day for your workout routine. That's not such a bad thing, right? However, now that you're pregnant, it's time to look at your particular routine and whether it's safe for you and Baby in your pregnancy. "If you're healthy and your pregnancy is normal, it's safe to start and continue most forms of exercise," says Hannah Dudney, M.D., OB/GYN with Centennial Women’s Group in Brentwood. "Women with certain pregnancy complications should not exercise during pregnancy including certain heart and lung conditions, cervical insufficiency or cerclage, pre-term labor, placenta previa, pre-term ruptured membranes and preeclampsia," she adds. Regular exercise is beneficial to both Mom and Baby as it promotes a healthy weight gain during pregnancy. In addition, Dudney says exercise may also decrease your risk of gestational diabetes as well as preeclampsia. Further, it can reduce back pain and constipation.
16
FALL•WINTER 2018-19
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity every week. Moderate intensity means you raise your heart rate and break a sweat — brisk walking, pilates, yoga, barre, light running and circuit training. However, you should still consult your doctor and keep an eye on your overall balance. "Throughout pregnancy, your center of gravity shifts forward thus changing your balance," says Dudney. "Falling in pregnancy can be harmful for both Mom and Baby, so avoid activities that increase your risk of falling," she says. You may find that you get out of breath more easily and may need to take more frequent breaks during exercise. In addition, Dudney says the hormones from pregnancy cause your ligaments to become relaxed which makes you more injury prone. She says to avoid high-impact activities or those with jumping, cutting and quick changes in direction. "If you're a competitive or rigorous athlete and wish to continue your sport through pregnancy there may be a safe way to achieve your goals," says Dudney. "However, you shouldn’t do this alone. Speak to your obstetrician early in your pregnancy and together you can design a plan with modifications tailored to your specific needs."
MEDICAL MARIJUANA If you're thinking about trying to conceive or you're currently pregnant, Bell says to avoid using both medical and recreational marijuana. "Marijuana smoke contains many of the same respiratory illness causing components as tobacco and sometimes in even higher concentrations," adds Bell. "Scientific data on the effects of marijuana in mother and baby are limited, but some suggest there may be developmental issues, low birth weight, slight increased risk of stillbirth and possibly pre-term birth. Furthermore, medical marijuana is not regulated by the FDA, which means there are no safety precautions or dosing recommendations for women who are pregnant or nursing."
VAPING Time and time again, you hear you should stop smoking while you're pregnant, but what about vaping?
OPIOID ADDICTION In 2016, the National Institute on Drug Abuse reported 1,186 opioid-related overdose deaths in Tennessee.
Baby Guide
Women should quit all types of tobacco products. Jennifer Bell, M.D., OB/GYN with Centennial Women’s Group at Summit, says this include smokeless products like vapes. "Vaping products contain nicotine. Nicotine in babies can lead to low birth weight and shortened pregnancy," says Bell. "Nicotine patches may be used by pregnant women with close supervision while attempting to stop smoking. This should be done with proper counseling and discussion of risks of exposure to nicotine," she adds.
"Unfortunately, opioid addiction is on the rise across the country and especially in our state," says Bell. "With nearly half of all pregnancies being unplanned, many women struggling with this addiction may become pregnant as well," adds Bell. It's important to seek prenatal care and discuss opioid use with your provider early and often during your pregnancy. This gives you the chance to get proper care and treatment in order to minimize harm to both you and your baby. "Opioid use in pregnancy has been associated with restricted growth in the baby, placenta problems, pre-term labor and even death," says Bell. "Following delivery, neonatal abstinence syndrome may be encountered which may mean an extended hospital stay for Baby. This is when the baby goes through withdrawal and is typically accompanied by high-pitched crying, feeding trouble and sleeping." You want what's best for Baby, right? Why not give yourself the benefits of life without the harmful habits that could potentially hurt you and your child? Experts says you need to want to change. Don't be afraid to seek help with anything that worries you during your pregnancy. Cut back on unnecessary routines and enjoy your pregnancy to term. Kiera Ashford is associate editor for this publication and mom of three ages 2, 8 and 12.
