WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT BABY'S
GOLDEN HOUR
BALANCING ACT 4 WAY S T O M A K E PA R E N T H O O D W O R K F O R Y O U
1. ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS MAKE TIME FOR YOURSELF. Many new parents says it's the number one thing that helps them succeed as a working or stayat-home parent. Make time for friends, in fact, seek them out. Participate in something that does NOT include your kids, or in a parent group where you can take them with you.
2. FALL IN LOVE WITH TO-DO LISTS. It will maximize your efficiency. Use an app like Wunderlist or whatever you prefer to keep on top of all your family & work details.
3. DROP THE GUILT. When you simply can't do stuff like hang out with friends or volunteer because of baby duty, it's OK. It's time to create your own balance now that works for you. Be creative in finding ways to make time for others.
4. KNOW THAT YOUR BEST IS ALWAYS GOOD ENOUGH. Give up the idea of perfection you may have had about life as a mom or dad. There will be super-hard days and there will be easier ones. Allowing yourself to be an imperfect mother or father will make you better at your role.
Baby Guide
Nine long months later come the first minutes following your baby's birth. The first 60 minutes are dubbed "The Golden Hour" for the positive bonding moments you can have with your baby. The first exchanges of eye contact, sounds and touches are all a part of bonding. According to Caring for Your Baby and Young Child: Birth to Age 5 from the American Academy of Pediatrics, when your infant is finally placed in your arms for the first time (as long as you and the baby are fine), the bonding begins. Here's how your newborn (and you) should be treated: • Healthy infants should be placed immediately on your chest for skin-to-skin contact until the first feeding takes place. • The nurse should perform the first physical assessment while the baby remains on your chest. • Weighing, measuring, bathing, eye ointment and any injections or blood tests should wait until after the first feeding. • Your baby should remain with you throughout your recovery period.

Tried & True Things 3 PRODUCTS THAT I RECOMMEND! BY KIERA ASHFORD Your money's precious, so don't waste it on things you won't end up liking. These three baby products have become keepers at my house: BOTTLE. STAT! Yes, it's pricey, but the Baby Brezza Formula Pro (babybrezza.com; $179.99) is a life saver! Babies go from fine to starving in seconds, and this gadget makes formula in fast order. My husband loves how effortless it is to use — even the kids love to make a bottle for baby brother!
TEMP TRACKER
NEWBORN SCREENING IN TENNESSEE An infant's first few weeks of life are precious. That's why it's so important for newborn screening to be done for numerous conditions. While you may not like it when the nurse comes in to get a few drops of blood from Baby's heel on that filter paper, know that those drops are critical to learning more about your baby's health. The Tennessee Department of Health tests about 80,000 newborns a year for

about 60 congenital conditions. If the state public health lab detects a potential problem with a sample, follow-up nurses will contact your pediatrician in addition to a regional genetic center for more indepth testing. Last year, all newborns started being checked for severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID), a rare genetic disorder that leaves babies at risk of early death from infections that normal immune systems typically fight off. Learn more about what to expect of your newborn's health screening at tn.gov/ health/section/newborn-screening.

Suspect a fever? The Withings Thermo (withings.com; $99.95) keeps track of its rise and fall. The app helps you keep track of medicine doses — great for a new mom's forgetful brain. Being able to show the doc how your baby's temp fluctuates makes a diagnosis clear.
NIGHT, NIGHT. Going on vacation — or camping — is a breeze with the Dreamliner Travel Bassinet (us.diono. com; $69.99). My little guy stays comfy in a netted area. It's so light and slim!

EXPECTING
LABOR OF
LOVE How to know when it's go time. BY CHRISTA MELNYK HINES
There it is again. Another contraction. Your mind is trying to figure it out. Is it labor? Is it Braxton-Hicks? Come on, that definitely feels like too much pressure down there! Through each step of your pregnancy, you're mothering a growing baby, but you're also preparing emotionally and physically for the final, most challenging leg of pregnancy's marathon — labor and delivery. Wondering what to expect? We've got you covered — read on!
Baby Guide

LABOR OF
LOVE Getting started, discuss what labor's like with your doctor. "They've seen it all and can often offer a lot of reassurance," says OB/GYN Tara Chettiar, M.D. "Remember that you're going into this as a team and everyone has the same goal: healthy mom and healthy baby." A written birth plan is a helpful way to think through your preferences and choices surrounding the birth of your baby. Discuss your plan with your provider as well as any circumstances that might necessitate a medical intervention like an induction or Cesarian section. Also decide where you're going to have your baby. These days, expectant parents are fortunate to have multiple choices of birth centers and prestigious hospitals with highly trained, experienced medical staff.
HOW DO I KNOW? Many women feel Braxton-Hicks contractions — occasional, irregular cramps felt since the middle of pregnancy — beginning around the 20-week mark. These contractions are more of an uncomfortable nuisance than painful. They're also characterized as more erratic than active labor, tending to last 10 - 20 seconds every 10 - 15 minutes. If you're bothered by them, make sure you're getting enough fluids. "The most common cause of false labor is dehydration. Pregnant women get dehydrated much easier than non-pregnant women," Chettiar says. Hot baths and showers can provide relief. It's very common to think that some of what you're feeling is "too much" and that something MUST be going on, but take heart. These are, for the most part, the effects feeling your baby's weight on your muscles. "Heat is a natural muscle relaxant so a heating pad on your back — not your belly — is a great option," Chettiar advises.
14 • spring 2017
LABOR: FIRST STAGE. Some signs of early labor include your water breaking (which is the rupture of the amniotic membranes), backache, blood-tinged discharge, menstrual-like cramps and low abdominal pressure. Stay close to home, try to rest and be prepared to head to the hospital as the time between contractions increases. Time your contractions from the beginning of one to the beginning of the next (not the end). And a quick tip about water breaking? Know that unlike dramatization of labor in movies, only about 15% of women have their water break spontaneously as labor begins.
also recommends a squat bar to help ease pain during the pushing phase. Your emotions may run the gamut, too. "There are many emotional challenges, such as despair, hopelessness, inadequacy, elation and a sense of accomplishment," DeBrabander says.
DRINK UP!
“The most common cause of false labor is dehydration. Pregnant
ACTIVE LABOR: GO TIME
women get dehydrated much easier
If you're in active labor, contractions are painful and rhythmic in nature, lasting 30 60 seconds and occurring every five minutes for at least one hour. Call your midwife or doctor. During this stage, expectant moms feel a wide range of emotions from anxiety and fear about the labor process to excitement that they'll soon be cuddling their long-awaited baby. To stay comfortable, try natural pain relief like intermittent walking (unless you've dilated beyond seven centimeters), sitting on a labor or peanut ball, or asking your partner for a gentle massage on your lower back. "Listening to music for distraction and shallow breathing techniques are (also) helpful," says OB/GYN Peter Caruso, M.D. Labor and delivery nurse Genna DeBrabander also suggests activities like slow dancing, imagery and visualization, along with changing positions from one side of your body to the other for pain relief.
than non-pregnant women."
PUSH! Active labor has advanced to transitional labor when the intensity of your contractions increases and the cervix dilates from seven to 10 centimeters. At this point, you've entered the second stage of the labor process, which can last as few as 15 minutes to as long as three hours or more. During this stage, you'll start to push. Shallow breathing techniques during the first part of a contraction and pushing at the peak of a contraction can help you manage any pain or pressure you're feeling. Caruso
Baby Guide
— Tara Chettiar, M.D.
While this is the most physically and emotionally taxing part of the labor process, by the end of all of your hard work you'll be rewarded with a baby in your arms.
ALMOST DONE. The last stage of labor is the delivery of the placenta. You may barely notice these contractions after giving birth to your baby. The placenta develops during pregnancy. It attaches to the uterine wall and is connected to your baby's umbilical cord. This organ supports your baby throughout her time in your uterus, providing oxygen and nutrients and removing waste products like carbon dioxide. If you plan on keeping your placenta, let your doctor know. After the delivery of your placenta, you may experience cramping as your uterus contracts. You'll likely encounter perineum pain and swelling, too. "Topical medications, oral medications and ice packs are great to aid these discomforts," DeBrabander says.
Christa Melnyk Hines and her husband are the parents of two sons. She's the author of the self-published book Confidently Connected: A Mom's Guide to a Satisfying Social Life (2013).

ADVENTURES
TAKE BABY CAMPING
Peace Will Come ... After All BY LAURIE ZOTTMANN
C
amping with your baby can be fun and liberating, but it can also be intimidating. Infants are complicated creatures, and sometimes it feels hard enough to meet their needs with a house full of resources, let alone out in the wilderness on a camping trip. Camping's not just for the childless. Here are tips and encouragement from baby-camping veterans to inspire you to give it a try.
16 • spring 2017
watching the trees and birds. Older babies love exploring this new world of bugs, rocks and sticks. Fretful minds unwind away from the multitasking demands of home.
HOW TO ENJOY IT Conquer camping with infants by having realistic expectations and packing wisely. Those are the keys to unlocking the top three challenges of baby camping:
WHY SHOULD I BOTHER?
1) SLEEP
Sarah Lambert is a seasoned family camper who started both her girls camping as infants, and she even camped while she was pregnant. “I think my life is easier when we are camping, and I have more time for fun and adventures with my girls,” Lambert says. She captures the paradox: although it takes a lot of preparation, taking your baby into the wild can ultimately break you free. You leave behind the pressure to make everything perfect and get to see how well your family and your brain thrive on simplicity. While parents get restored by laid back hikes and starry skies, infants delight in
Yes, it will be hard, but after a period of adjustment, peace will come. Be ready to try different things, and give it time. It may take two nights of thinking the apocalypse is nigh before your little one finally believes tenting is OK — you might find sleep on the third blissful night. In addition to bringing a variety of familiar, soothing stimuli, keeping close to usual schedules of bedtime and naps (even short ones on walks or drives) helps Baby re-establish rhythm. Starting a bit early with a relaxing bedtime routine in the tent also helps prime the pump for comfort and rest.
Baby Guide
PACK FOR LITTLE CAMPERS MULTITASKERS: • Playpen • Stroller • Baby Carrier NIGHTTIME AND SLEEP: • Favorite bedtime loveys, blankets, music and books • Zip-together sleeping bags for co-sleeping CLOTHES & DIAPERS: • Extra diapers and wipes • At least three full outfits to mix and match in lots of layers and quick-dry fabrics • Sunsuit/fleece suit combo MESS MANAGEMENT: • Paper towels and wet wipes • A bucket/dishtub to keep clean water handy for quick washes • Plastic bags for diapers, clothes COOKING: • For beginning eaters: mashable foods (like avocado and banana), squeeze tubes of purees and instant oatmeal • For nursers: Warm bottles in hot water or breastfeed BUG PROTECTION: • Net to cover playpen, stroller and backpack carrier • Bug spray (DEET-free) • Dryer sheets, Avon Skin-so-Soft or Listerine • Long pants, long sleeves and footie outfits
2) COPING WITH CRYING Given that Baby's experiencing a major adjustment, some meltdowns are inevitable. The great news is that many of the best baby-soothing strategies are intrinsic to camping like a baby carrier, or focusing on sights and sounds like a babbling stream or the wind in the trees. You will also have bottles, soothers and breastfeeding available. If all else fails, take your baby into the car for a little privacy and just wait it out. It will pass, and your fellow campers will survive.
3) REGULATING TEMPERATURE Pack clothes in multiple layers of quickdry fabrics with warm features Baby can’t squirm out of (hoods, footies and foldover hand cuffs rather than blankets, hats and mittens). Expert infant campers Ryan and Verena Tarves have another elegant solution. They pack a few pairs of synthetic body suits (like UV-blocking water suits) and use them as a light outfit for splashing and roaming around in the midday heat as well as a dry under layer at night. For cool evenings and sleeping, they top the
suit with a hooded and footed fleece suit with fold-over hand covers. Another smart move: plan the location and the season of your trip so it will not get too cold at night. Tennessee days and nights are warming up, but night temps can still get low in spring and summer. Heather Lee Leap managed to keep her baby warm on a substantially cold night. “We camped in the mountains around freezing at night with a toddler. We bundled her in polypro long johns, a fleece shirt, leggings and her fleece snowsuit ... with the hood up. She slept between us, and we didn't worry about her getting out from the covers!” Once you've conquered these three camping conundrums, you'll be ready to find your family’s bliss in the woods. Pick up that baby, pack up that tent and go have a wonderful, relaxing time in the bush. Laurie Zoottmann is mom to a toddler and preschooler. They survived their first camping trial by fire and will be taking their new confidence into the wild again this summer.
RESERVE YOUR PERFECT CAMPING SPOT: TNSTATEPARKS.COM/ACTIVITIES/CAMPING
SUN: • Baby-safe sunscreen; hats; sunglasses; shade covers for the baby carrier or stroller; UV suits HEALTH AND SAFETY: • A first-aid kit. Also: Know infant first aid and CPR
Be prepared for cold nighttime temps. Pack Baby's clothes in multiple layers.

BIRTH PHOTOGRAPHERS: It's Trending to Get Pics in the Delivery Room
T
aking pictures and/or video during Baby's birth used to fall solely into Dad's hands, but that's almost impossible to do when the big moment arises. Lots of parents are hiring birth photographers — it's a growing trend in the delivery room. If you can spring for it — most experienced birth photographers charge between $1,500 - $2,500 for the service — it's a convenient and bold way to document your baby's delivery story. So, what should you look for in a birth photographer? Of course, "look for someone with experience," says Kalli Pavon, owner/photographer with Kalimana Film Stories in Middle Tennessee. She says to seek "a professional birth photographer who's proficient at the craft and documenting a variety of labor and delivery situations." Many birth photographers will capture a c-section, too, as long as your hospital staff permits it. "I have captured many cesarean births," says Cindy Lennon, a birth photographer with A Sacred Delivery, serving the Middle Tennessee area. "The decision is made by the attending doctors and staff at the time of surgery. But if I'm not allowed in the room,
Kalimana Film Stories captures a local mom and baby moments after birth.
I'll take photos before and after the surgery," she adds. Birth photographers begin snapping pics from the time they arrive during your labor. How much of the actual birth the photographer captures depends on you. "Some families want to see it all, while others just want to see photos of moments they can share with others," says Pavon. "Either way, a professional birth photographer is able to accommodate the family's desires," she adds. For a list of birth photographers in the Middle Tennessee area, see the directory on page 20.
