Because lots of little things go into the biggest joy in life. By Susan Day

BUILDING BABY BONDS 4 MOMS & DADS ______________ 1. CUDDLE

Get in touch with your inner softy! Moms can snuggle Baby while breastfeeding, and Dads can snuggle and kiss while bottlefeeding. Snuggle together in bed as a family in the mornings.

2. NIGHT

DUTY

Take on and share the baby bathing and late-night feedings like they're a privilege, not a drudgery.

3. SUPPORT

EACH OTHER

Moms tend to take over more than is necessary causing Dads to stay in the background, but guard against it. Work to balance out the baby care, so he learns to want you both equally.

4. ROCK,

COO and SING

You don't need a good voice to whisper sweet nothings or to sing a lullaby. Hum and sing to your child while you rock him.

5. GET

FRESH AIR DAILY

Don't be cooped up inside; use a carrier or stroller and get out together for daily walks.

6. READ

TO YOUR INFANT

Start this activity early and continue doing it daily. Mom and Dad can switch off, sharing special books and the animated sound of your voices with your child. Source: BabyCalm by Sarah OckwellSmith (Skyhorse; 2014)

Nashville's First Outpatient Birthing Center Arrives Next Summer

W

hen Baby + Company opens in Nashville next summer, the Middle Tennessee area will join in the nationwide growing acceptance of holistic childbirth. Birth centers are seeing a resurgence of interest across the country: The American Association of Birthing Centers lists nearly 300 centers in 40 states, almost doubling the number of centers in the past five years. Nashville's first outpatient birthing center is a partnership between Maternity Centers of America and Vanderbilt University Medical Center — Vanderbilt will provide the staff, including nurse midwives and Medical Director Bennett Spetalnick, M.D., and partners. Baby + Company will be a boutique maternity center, one that promises an exceptional level of personalized care within a high-end design. The center will be located near Vanderbilt and will feature five large birthing suites, a family room, kitchen, exam rooms and other support areas geared toward women seeking a natural delivery experience without anesthesia. Women wishing to be candidates for the center will be fully screened; only low-risk women will be accepted. Learn more about Baby + Company at babyandcompany.com.

Baby Talk: Start Babbling! Recent findings show that it's not so much the amount of words babies hear that spurs their early efforts to talk but how the words that they hear sound. Researchers from the University of Washington and University of Connecticut measured parents' use of regular speaking voices with their babies versus the exaggerated, sing-song animated speech known as "parentese." They discovered the more exaggerated the parents were with parentese, the more their babies communicated. What are you waiting for? Start babbling!

FROM PREGNANCY THROUGH DELIVERY By Kiera Ashford

In a world full of mysterious ingredients, it’s becoming more and more common for women to choose natural pregnancy and childbirth. Here's what you should know.

E

xpectant moms can be some of the healthiest women around when their aim is to provide the absolute best physical environment for their growing baby. Hearing all the reports about what not to use or eat while pregnant can make just about any soonto-be mom decide to go all natural … and there are some advantages, too.

Advantages of a Natural Pregnancy When you start to think about what you can do to make your pregnancy as natural as possible, talk with your spouse about helping you achieve the best outcome: an all-natural childbirth preceded by natural childbirth classes and a healthy full-term pregnancy. “The more natural your approach (one which relies on healthy lifestyle choices and use of the least interventions and medications possible), the healthier your children will be for the next generation,” says Lauren Feder, M.D., author of Natural Pregnancy: Practical

The Baby Guide

Medical Advice and Holistic Wisdom for a Healthy Pregnancy and Childbirth (Hatherleigh Press; 2014). Feder's book provides loads of information on different pregnancy conditions, homeopathy for childbirth, the different emotions women go through during a pregnancy, birth and more as well as a lengthy discussion on both natural births and the medical approach. “The more a pregnant woman knows, the more comfortable she’ll be making decisions during her pregnancy, labor and birth,” says Lindsey Seger, chapter leader of ICAN of Nashville (icanofnashville.webs.com), is a Certified Childbirth Educator and instructor with An Everyday Miracle Childbirth Classes (aneverydaymiracle.com).

Staying Healthy & Strong Taking the natural route during your pregnancy means committing to being healthy and strong for the best out(please turn the page)

nature baby come. Stay away from smoking, drugs and alcohol. Take your prenatal vitamin, and if you decide to try an all-natural diet, discuss it with your doctor first to be sure you don't eliminate something your body needs. “Stay well nourished with good wholesome foods, move your body every day to build stamina and strength, tend to any chronic medical conditions you might have like high blood pressure, diabetes, etc.,” advises Seger. Mothers Naturally (mothersnaturally.org), a public education program from the Midwives Alliance of North America, tells pregnant women to eat nutrient rich, whole foods and avoid highly processed foods and empty calories — eating organic when possible — and suggests that if you’re craving sugar, eat protein to alleviate that craving.

face," she adds. “Without an epidural in place, women can feel the body’s cues to change position, to move or bear down,” Segar says. “Labor is less likely to stall out, and you’re less likely to have an instrumental (vacuum or forceps) or surgical birth,” she adds. Aside from being a full participant in your baby's birth, another advantage to a natural delivery is that you will not have to endure the side effects from any interventions. “You’ll have the shortest recovery time, and Baby will be more alert and better able to initiate breastfeeding,” says Seger. “Plus, women report that birthing normally gives them a sense of confidence and exhilaration, in much the same way that running a marathon or climbing a mountain does,” she adds.

Natural Birth

The Delivery

While delivering a baby with an epidural allows pregnant women to feel virtually nothing and leads mothers to feel like they're not a part of their baby's delivery, really, natural childbirth is just the opposite. "Birth is our superpower as women," says Jeannie Casey, AAHCC, CD (DONA), HBCE, PD, of Nashville Childbirth (nashvillechildbirth.com). In choosing natural childbirth, she says, "Women want to feel all the movement and to work with their bodies to give birth. They want to be emotionally connected to the baby and experience all of the birthing process and bond with a baby who's alert, looking into the parents' eyes and ready to bond on mom's

What about those contractions!? While the thought of childbirth pain can worry a woman endlessly, there are natural ways to alleviate discomforts. A simple change in body position can be all that you need to relieve your pain. “Lying flat on your back is how we’re accustomed to seeing women labor on TV and in movies, but most women find that position to be quite uncomfortable in real life,” says Seger. “Upright (standing, leaning forward, walking, slow-dancing) and asymmetrical (lunging, walking up and down stairs) positions are favorites,” she adds. If a change in position doesn’t give you the comfort you’re seeking, be vocal about

14 • fall/winter 2014/15

it. Don’t whine or complain, but hum a tune or sing your favorite song. “Vocalizing through contractions can be very helpful,” suggests Seger. “Whether that’s singing, humming, chanting an inspirational phrase or moaning, the woman who doesn’t feel like she has to be silent is usually doing better than the one who does.” In other words, don’t worry about what everyone in the hall hears! Staying calm does wonders for a woman under stress, too. “I can’t stress relaxation enough,” says Seger. “The more you can work WITH your contraction instead of fighting it, the better. All sorts of techniques exist to help you stay calm and loose: the touch of your partner, counter pressure on your back, rebozo tricks, deep slow breaths, aromatherapy, self-hypnosis, you name it,” she adds. But, don’t wait until the last minute to try something out. Give them a practice run and see how you feel doing them in the comfort of your own home. “You’ll be more successful if you can practice techniques beforehand and get a sense of what works for you. That’s where childbirth classes really come in handy,” says Seger. If you begin to feel the urge to call for an epidural, don’t worry. It could be a sign that you just need to try something different. “Maybe you’d like to get in a deep warm tub or bounce on the exercise ball awhile,” says Seger. “Remind yourself that you’re doing very well and that you only need to worry about THIS contraction. Pain meds aren’t a sign of failure — they’re just the last technique in your bag of tricks,” explains Seger. “A woman who has an epidural in place may have pain relief,

The Baby Guide

but she will still need emotional support and physical assistance to assume different positions,” she adds. After all is said and done, you’re sure to feel exultant about the adventure you just accomplished and the healthy lifestyle you’re introducing your newborn to, and that seems to be drawing more and more women toward natural deliveries. “Whether or not they are interested in natural birth, nearly all my patients come seeking an additional approach that honors both the body and the spirit of mother and baby,” says Feder. Kiera Ashford is the associate editor for this publication and mother of two children, ages 8 and 4.

TIPS TO TAKING THE ALL-NATURAL ROUTE • Eat well (whole, real food), fruits and vegetables, limit sweets • Get plenty of protein (60 grams or more a day) • Use sea salt • Get in trace minerals • Drink plenty of water • Listen to your cravings: Chocolate cravings can mean you’re low on magnesium. Odd nonfood cravings like ice, laundry detergent, dirt and chalk have been tied to a condition called pica — which could mean you're a little anemic. Source: Jeannie Casey

HELLO, 3RD TRIMESTER

nesting

By Meagan Ruffing

What do you do when you're feeling overwhelmed by all that needs doing before Baby arrives?

R

ight around the end of your second trimester and somewhere in the beginning of your third, something magical happens in your pregnancy. This something magical is called "nesting." Simply put, it's a term that means you're preparing for Baby and therefore, wanting to clean everything in sight and getting organized before the arrival of your precious bundle of cuteness. For some women, this period of nesting is a relaxing and comforting time for them as they organize and control what goes where. For others, it can be a bit stressful depending on other factors in life such as an outgrown home where there's not enough storage and space to put things in the place that you want them to be put. So what do you do when you're nesting but feeling overwhelmed about where to begin? Many women ask this question, and unless you're pregnant yourself or have been pregnant – this very distinct stage in pregnancy may cause more stress than relaxation. Try these seven tips and ideas to get you started on your way to creating a calm, organized and nesting-approved home that

16 • fall/winter 2014/15

The Baby Guide

results in a place where the entire family wants to gather. No matter the size of your living quarters or the question of where to begin, this list will give you the nudge you need to get things going.

7 TIPS 1. Make a list. Lists are great because they're visual. Do it the old-fashioned way with a pen and paper. Write down everything on your mind from organizing your shoes to washing all of the baby’s new clothes. Having something tangible to read from will help you stay focused. 2. Be realistic. You may think that repainting your master bathroom three months before you deliver is a great idea. But hang on. Nesting is a time of organizing and settling in. Save the painting for your husband or paint your soon-to-be baby a one-of-a-kind masterpiece made by yours truly if you really have the itch to paint. 3. Take your time. Revisit your list of things to be done and do them one at a time. Trying to tackle everything at once will leave you feeling overwhelmed and defeated before you've even tackled that first item. Give yourself grace when it comes to tidying things up and take it slow. 4. Enjoy nesting. Nesting is one of the many fun times during a woman’s pregnancy. It says, "The end is near," and this, that and the other needs to be done before the baby is born. Nesting allows for some sort of control over the pregnancy and signals to the brain that, "Yes, I am ready for this baby to come." Bottom line, it feels good to be prepared.

5. Include the kids. If you have other children, this is a great time to let them help you with organizing the home. Kids love to help; especially when it comes to the arrival of their younger sibling. Something as simple as putting the baby’s bows in a bin to vacuuming the nursery can make all the difference to your children when they want to help. 6. Reflect. After one thing is done, take a break and eat a snack. Take time to reflect on where you are in your pregnancy. Enjoy the moment. Relish in the fact that your other children get a smile out of helping. Embrace the idea of waiting until after naptime to tackle the dishes. Take time to be in the moment. 7. Save something for your husband. Just because you think you can get everything done by yourself, your husband may want to be involved! This serves two purposes: 1.) You can direct your attention to another task and 2.) Your husband will feel needed and appreciated when he sees how happy you are now that the curtains are hung in the baby’s room. It’s a win-win. Nesting happens. It's part of a woman’s pregnancy that many look forward to. Take this list of ideas and get started on your own list of "to dos." If the baby decides to come early, you will be comforted knowing that everything is in its place before the arrival. If you go past your due date, well, now you just have more time to nest.

necessities: Buy the two essential safety items: the car seat and the crib. Stock up on newborn must-haves, including enough outfits, bibs, bedding, and changing and bath supplies.

what can wait: Making lots of meals in advance to freeze for the newborn days. You'll be fine as long as you know good restaurants that do take-out. Toys: Baby won’t be doing much more than sleeping and eating the first few weeks. Installing baby gates, outlet covers and drawer locks. You’ve still got months before baby crawls. Big home remodeling projects. This isn’t your last chance ever.

Meagan Ruffing is a freelance parenting writer. She is pregnant with her third child and is currently enjoying the nesting stage.

anderbilt University, United Health Foundation and Yale University joined forces in spring 2014 to launch a new prenatal care program in Middle Tennessee that is built around four key concepts: expect, connect, explore and grow. Expect With Me offers prenatal care in a group setting with the goal of providing valuable social and emotional support to expectant moms in addition to standard prenatal care and education. Expect With Me features 10 two-hour care sessions during the second and third trimesters. Each installment includes a physical assessment, an evaluation of the mother's and baby's vitals, and a group education, skills-building and discussion session. The program comes with a secure Web portal with social networking features so the women in the group can stay connected between sessions and have access to a strong support network. Expect With Me is aimed at those in their first trimester, but participants may enroll up to 24 weeks into their pregnancy. The program replaces traditional, individual prenatal appointments and is billed the same way by insurance. Participating facilities are Vanderbilt Center for Women's Health (719 Thompson Lane, Ste. 27100, Nashville) and Center for Women's Health at Northcrest (522 Northcrest Drive, Springfield). What if we could give Tennessee babies the best possible start in life? We can.

There may be nothing a new mother can do for her baby that is more healthful or critical to early development than breastfeeding. If you know a new or expecting mother, there’s nothing like a solid circle of support by family, friends, and health professionals to encourage breastfeeding. So get on board. Breast milk. Babies know it’s perfect. Visit www.healthytennesseebabies.com to see for yourself just how perfect. New mothers can find support and encouragement by calling the Tennessee Breastfeeding Hotline at 855-423-6667 (855-4BFMOMS).
