Summer Camp Memories

M

Feb. 3, Mar. 1 and Apr. 7 • 8:30 a.m.

y summer camp memories as a kid consist of waking up to the smell of breakfast pizzas sizzling around the fire; feeling free and independent; being fully in charge of my belongings; choosing what I wanted to wear for bedtime before it was lights out in the cabin; telling silly stories to my friends while we tried to cover up our giggles during quiet hours; and my first time braving the high ropes course. This was the good stuff. I was an outdoorsy kid and I still love spending time in nature; and, challenge is my middle name. So when we were given the choice to take on the heart-pounding high ropes obstacle or another activity that was less scary, just guess what I chose. Even though my knees were shivering uncontrollably, I still wanted to get across. I felt safe knowing that I was harnessed on and if I were to slip, I would hang tight until I got my feet stable again on the thick rope. All I could remember thinking was, I have to get across, I have to get across. I can’t wait to tell Mom what I did. With a little grace and confidence, I made it to the other side with maybe a few slips and long, deep concentrated breaths along the way. I remember how good it felt when I told my mom and saw the excited, proud reaction on her face. Nothing was better than knowing my parents were proud of me, and wow, did I feel like I turned over a new leaf. I felt like I grew a little bit more that weekend and broke out of my shy shell. My summer camp memories are something I will hang on to forever which says a lot. Isn’t it funny what kids remember from their childhood? I remember family vacations, playing with neighborhood friends, best friends at school, girl scouts, field trips, camps and of course, getting my first stitches. Kids hold onto those impactful memories — good and bad — and will carry those with them through life. I love thinking back on these warm, happy moments that are so clear because of the positive bearing they had on me. I want the same for my kids! Yes, they have experienced time away from me at day camp, or an overnight sleepover with a friend. But, this may be the year that my 10 going on 11-year-old, Will, may experience a weekend full of independence, too. I see he is ready — his maturity; responsibilities he has taken on; being OK without me; and his excitement to try new things tells me this might just be his year. “Mommy, I want to learn how to use a bow and arrow” and “I want to go backpacking in the woods in the middle of nowhere” and “Mommy, can I go kayaking, too?” He has observed and heard about my exciting adventures, and he wants in on it, too. I’m ready for him to experience and feel what I did as a kid. I think summer camp truly helps shape a kid's childhood, leaving them with memories they will never forget and may just impact who they become as an adult. Now excuse me while I sign Will up for his first-ever summer camp adventure!

QUESTION: When my 2 year old throws a tantrum, she sometimes smacks me. Any advice on how to break her from this? “She’s 2! Most 2 year olds are struggling to self-regulate and don’t have a solid grasp of consequences (i.e., if I hit I get a toy taken away). Instead, model being the calm in her storm of emotions and help her to use her words to express frustration. You can tell her, 'Oh my, I see you’re very frustrated. You hurt mommy. When we are upset we use our words. What might help you feel less frustrated?' Then, offer her options to help her such as taking a break, deep breaths, going for a walk, or finding a quiet toy. Check out the book, Flip-It. It is a wonderful resource!"

“Hang in there and definitely follow through with timeouts. You can use a timer and take away more than one privilege when she hits and let her know hitting anyone is not okay." C.J. Jennings “Maybe ask if she’d like a hug. And let her know you understand her frustration, however hitting mommy or daddy isn’t nice." Sarah Willman “Listen to Dr. Becky's podcast ('Good Inside'). YOGA: Helping kids be aware of mind, body and soul.

Increased concentration, confidence and mood are only a few of the perks that yoga offers kids. PLUS: turn the page to read how schools are helping kids with mindfulness. By Kelly Hater

Y

oga is a powerful way to teach kids how to build a strong foundation of selfawareness. Yoga teaches kids how to slow down and become aware of themselves; aware of the breath, the mind, the body and the soul. Building a strong foundation in your kids will help them manage the challenges that come with life in a positive way. Yoga also: • Teaches techniques for managing anxiety. • Helps kids’ emotional wellness by focusing on the present moment. • Increases developmental strength, flexibility and balance needed for health and longevity. • Boosts confidence and provides empowerment. • Reinforces kids’ concentration through focusing and memorization abilities. • Helps kids de-stress about school, homework and peer relationships; yoga is a healthy coping strategy used for a lifetime.

Encourage the joy of movement in your kids for their well-being as they grow.

Aiming to positively impact kids’ mental health, Cincinnati schools are helping kids to relax and recharge. By Amanda Hayward

A boy relaxes while listening to a three-minute music excerpt at school.

Mindful Music Helps School Kids

N

othing is more rewarding than seeing your kids run toward you from the bus stop, eager to tell you about what they learned at school. And to your surprise, they tell you about the “brain break” they took or the GoNoodle yoga video they watched at the end of the day. Next thing you know, they are practicing breathing techniques at home. What is all of this about? In Cincinnati, a national program called Mindful Music Moments features incorporating a single piece of music each week over the intercom or in the classroom. It offers a preK-specific program (free in Ohio) and also serves grades K-12 with most schools falling in the K-8 range, according to Stacy Sims, founder and director of Mindful Music. “Schools receive audio journeys in a web app that combine mindful, creative prompts with a three-minute excerpt of music, so that students experience the benefits of music appreciation and mindfulness daily,” Sims explains. This program aims to positively impact kids’ health throughout participating schools. Research proves mindfulness and music listening are particularly helpful in helping young kids to know they have agency over their emotional responses, she continues. Recent studies have found that schoolaged kids who learned the technique showed a 24 percent increase in positive social behaviors, 24 percent decrease in aggression, 15 percent improvement in math scores and improved classroom behavior

(i.e. self-control, paying attention, respect for others) according to the Developmental Psychology Journal and the Journal of Child and Family Studies. “I think it is important to remember that when our youth are dysregulated due to stress or trauma, the part of the brain that manages compassion, empathy, planning, problem-solving, is not even online,” says Sims. “And language-based solutions [‘be quiet, be calm, pay attention’] are not effective commands as the brain cannot process these concepts.” So, why now? Jennifer Russell, school counselor at Creekside Early Childhood School, says they were seeing kids weighted down by stress. “We were noticing that our students were coming in very stressed in the morning, and there was just a lot of irritability, and they just had a lot on their plate for little kids,” says Russell. After careful research, the partnership with Mindful Music began. This fun and effective program also partners with Cincinnati arts organizations including musical numbers by the Cincinnati Symphony, Cincinnati Opera and Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra. More Health Concepts in Schools Some local schools, including Lakota, have also incorporated weekly specials that focus on breathing techniques, says Russell. “Kids learn through play and applications,” she explains. “Things are very play-based, even with the breathing exercises.” “Calming corners” have also become wide-

spread throughout the school district. Each classroom has a designated space for kids to recharge, which is just another response to kids that have feelings, says Russell. It’s a quiet space full of resources such as books, coloring, drawing and more for kids to relax and unwind. “The secret sauce is really creating time and space for students to notice their breath, thoughts, and emotions and to have time each day to come to appreciate the nature of their own mind and feelings and to feel curious and open to the experience,” says Sims.

PRACTICE AT HOME You can incorporate mindful practices at home with your kids: • Use Provided School Resources Check your kids’ backpack daily for the free resources sent at home. • Stay Connected Follow your schools’ social media, check your e-mail often and stay in-the-know with what your kids are learning at school. • Prioritize Quiet Time Take a moment to wind down toward the end of the day with your kids (read books, listen to music or simply talk and listen). • Get Involved Volunteer in your kids’ classroom. PLANNING AHEAD

Happy campers at YMCA Camp Ernst, located in Burlington, Ky.

So, What’s Sleep-Away Camp REALLY About? Want to know more about overnight camp? There is more to it than you may think. Read on to hear from local camp directors about what your kids will really take away from camp this summer.

A

By Amanda Hayward

hhh … sweet, sweet summer camp. Many parents and kids anticipate camps to kick off the sunniest time of the year. Just think about it — you can almost smell the sunscreen, feel the warmth of the sunshine and visualize your kids carrying along their loaded overnight bag, hats on, ready to go. This is what overnight camp is all about, right? Yes, that and a lot more. It’s about friendships, independence and freedom, learning new experiences and overall, coming back home refreshed, revived and ready to tell you all about it.

12 february 2022

Experience and Independence It’s about new experiences and gaining independence. Both of these are strong, concrete skills kids will achieve while away from home, and parents will, too. Not only is it rewarding to know that your kids are learning and growing while away from home, they bring it home with them and we get to witness that firsthand. Unplugging and Connecting Not only will kids unplug a little from their daily tech routine, they are unplugging with each other, according to Elizabeth “Eli” Cochran, executive director at YMCA Camp Ernst. “Overnight camping started in the late 1800s as a movement

Your #1 Hometown Family Resource

to get kids out of the industrial/city environment and back to the fresh air of nature,” Cochran says. “In many ways, the purpose is the same today - unplug and connect with each other, oneself, and nature, while building leadership, friendship and confidence.”

more skills in the sport he loves, sport camps are a great way to go. Sports camps can include everything from sport preparation to the ability to try an array of great sports including football, basketball, soccer, tennis, golf and more.

Getting Out of That Comfort Zone This is for kids and adults alike. Of course, you need to first look at the age and maturity of your kiddo before deciding if they are up for the challenge. Once you see they are more than ready to explore and be away from home, it may be time for him to be immersed in a fun camp community. “Going to camp really is the best way to get out of your comfort zone and into the ‘challenge zone,’” says Cochran. Kids will not only be supported and surrounded by enthusiastic role models, they get to try and learn new tasks while celebrating their achievements, she continues, and parents have something to celebrate, too. “Parents, too, need camp — as a break from scheduling, cleaning, driving, etc., and can benefit from the taste of independence their camper gains from camp,” says Cochran.

Religious Camps Religious camps tend to be focused on a religious faith. Kids will participate in both religious studies and daily practice, all while getting the most out of the recreational programs the camp offers.

Learning Communication Skills Not just learning communication skills, overnight camp is the gateway to communication skills, says Joe Mendes, director/owner at Camp Roosevelt Firebird. “It’s really the whole package of personal growth and communication skills,” he continues. “Kids develop courage and empathy as they learn to face uncomfortable situations without parental support [emotional, physical, conflict, homesickness.]” Kids also learn how to deal with these emotions and overcome them, says Mendes. These are skills that they can take with them throughout their youth and even adulthood.

Coed Camps Made for boys and girls to enjoy activities together, in “real world” familiar and balanced home-life situations — the big difference is that they are at camp! All kids can find joy in interacting together, too. Coed camps provide a great way to prepare your kids for the world they are living in. Gender-Specific Camps Boys-only or girls-only camps are generally smaller, more intimate camps. They focus on all of the fun activities you would expect at any camp, just leaving out some of the social pressures some campers may feel.

Check Out Cincinnati Family’s Summer Camp Directory starting on page 14. —————— Mark Your Calendars! Cincinnati Family’s 2022 Summer Camp Adventure Fair

Fitness Camps Kids and teens learn to eat healthy and stay active at overnight fitness camps. Some camps will have daily indoor and outdoor activities, a healthy eating menu and education on how to have a healthier lifestyle. It’s not just focusing on a camper’s physical wellbeing, they focus on emotional and social health, too. Special-Interest or Themed Camps Focusing on a specific area of interest including animals, nature, crafting, cooking, technology, art, theater and more, there’s no doubt there is a camp out there meant for your kid. If your kiddo is into a specific hobby, a specialty-themed camp may be right down his alley. The main focus is usually on that interest, plus you will find that the camp counselors have vast knowledge in the camp theme, too!

Making Lifelong, Strong Relationships This is truer than true. Overnight camp counselors have witnessed transformation in kids Saturday, March 19 and the true friendships they built literally, at the Blue Ash Recreation Center overnight. “Kids come for the first time for the exciting activities and love to return year after year for the friendship and acceptance,” says Cochran. “I have seen kids Special-Needs Camps grow leaps and bounds in confidence, self-advocacy, leadership, For your kid with special needs, these camps focus on activities self-awareness, curiosity and so much more!” geared toward camper abilities; have a knowledgeable staff with expertise to understand campers’ challenges; and of course a Types of Sleep-Away Camps supportive and fun atmosphere for your curious camper. There are So what kind of sleep-away camps are out there for your kid? Quite some wonderful summer camps and summer programs out there a lot, actually, and for every kind of kid! During your search, make for kids and teens with physical, learning and developmental special sure the camp is accredited by the American Camp Association first, needs, where they can have fun every day in an active and carsuggests Cochran. ing summer camp environment. Many private summer camps are “Camp is youth development at its finest and camps are ready to designed around the special needs and disabilities of their campers partner with parents in this great adventure of raising empathetic, including amputations, or diabetes, autism, and many others with curious, kind kids,” she continues. “Look for a camp that is run by doctors and/or nurses on staff. Other camps have a more “incluprofessionals who are trained and up to date with best practices in sive” approach and provide special access, equipment, sessions or the fields of child protection, youth development, teamwork, facilitaprograms for campers with special needs and more. tion, mental health, inclusion and social-emotional development.” Before you send him off, Mendes’ advice is to tell your kids you Here are some common overnight camps you can expect to are excited for them but also be frank - there will be moments of come across during your research: adversity but no matter what, they can do it, you will be successful and you and their camp counselors will help them along the way. Sports Camps This can lead to a more positive camp experience for them and you. By far, one of the most popular types of summer camps for kids is sports.
