Don’t Lose Yourself Too Much, Moms

always be “days like that.” Now if the “days like that” turn into weeks or longer, there’s probably a deeper issue. And it’s true that Moms who lose themselves in the family shuffle, who cut off their unique interests altogether, risk unhappiness in life. You must keep your creative juices flowing, seek friendship from others, and should you get lost, find your way back to who you were before

you allowed mothering kids to completely dominate your life. As an adolescent, trying to figure out who I was (whether I knew I was doing that or not), I observed my mother to find clues to me. I remember looking through her drawers and closet — just telling the truth here — and feeling dismayed that most of her things were worn and in a state of disarray; the bottom of her closet a horrid tumble of shoes I didn’t like; her jewelry box a tangle of trinkets. A stay-at-home mom who was also deeply involved in the community (teaching, performing, writing, volunteering), my mother was never only about the kids; she had lots more going on. Mom had endless interests and curiosities, so she was always up to something, and I loved that about her. She also had a very healthy sense of humor. But you’d better believe she got overwhelmed at times. Her chaotic personal belongings gave her away. She could go ballistic over the tiniest thing if she felt put upon. More than once I saw her sweep a pile of clutter from counter to floor in a swift swoop ... yet she always recovered quickly. I know she enjoyed unwinding and watching television with Dad most nights after we kids were in bed. I don’t think she drank wine at night like so many moms do now, but early one Saturday morning before Mom and Dad were up, my sister and I found the “for company only” yellow glass ashtray in the TV room ... and we’d had no company the night before ... It held a smoked cigarette butt stained with Mom’s rosy lipstick! Some sort of respite, perhaps? The truth is, each mom is capable of handling different amounts of family life. As each child matures, child maintenance lessens. Once your children are teens, you may yearn for those “easier” days when they were more compliant. So when it gets tough and lonely, you have to look beyond your walls and not be so small about your life; think to the future and beyond your world, but also know it’s absolutely OK to have a good cry now and then ... preferably in a bubble bath ... while someone else is watching the kids.

I can’t wait until all my kids are old enough we can camp as a family, and yes, we will be roughing it with tents, the basics, and even unplugged!” Kelly Lewis

WHAT’S HER ACE SCORE? Studies say childhood trauma may impact future physical health. Here’s what to know.

A

pril is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, and while it’s critical to take steps to end child abuse in our communities, it’s also important to understand how abuse will affect children as they grow into adulthood — in other words, it’s all about knowing their ACE score. What’s an ACE score? In the late 1990s, the Centers for Disease Control and the Kaiser Permanente’s Department of Preventative Medicine coordinated the Adverse Childhood Experiences Study (ACE). The study asked a series of questions that measured stressful experiences in childhood — physical and sexual abuse, of course, but also experiences like divorce, death of a family member, if a family member was mentally ill or an alcoholic, or whether or not a child felt hungry, alone or unsupported while growing up. Researchers found a link between childhood trauma and adult social and emotional issues — adults who experienced trauma as children were more likely to abuse alcohol and drugs, or engage in risky behavior. But they also found a link between childhood trauma and chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, lung cancer, and autoimmune diseases. The initial study, along with nearly 60 other studies that followed, also found that those who experienced more

12

April 2016

than one type of trauma were at greater risk of developing emotional, as well as chronic health, problems. “The ACE Score attributes one point for each category of exposure to child abuse and/ or neglect included in the Adverse Childhood Experiences study,” says Jill Gay, Director of Treatment Services at the Family Nurturing Center. “Add up the points for a score of 0 - 10. The higher the score, the greater the exposure, and therefore the greater the risk of negative health consequences.” For example, an ACE score of four increased one’s risk of pulmonary lung disease by 390 percent (which makes sense — a child who experienced trauma is more likely to engage in risky behavior like cigarette smoking). Additional research has found that stressful or traumatic events also affect a child’s brain development — it’s hard to focus on learning fractions when the brain is too busy thinking about when the body might get to eat next or is worried about Mom or Dad at home. “It’s important to know that the cumulative total of a child’s adverse experiences can cause detrimental negative health consequences,” says Gay. However, she also points out that while adverse experiences are very common — think about how many families you know that have experienced divorce — your child’s ACE score doesn’t have to mean they will struggle as adults. It’s all on how kids perceive and cope with the

“Where Every Family Matters.”

trauma, according to Gay. That means it’s up to parents to take proactive measures — be aware of the impact of adverse experiences and know the resources available, like school, church, family or your community. Says Gay, “How support systems respond when a child has an adverse childhood experience can be the difference between it being a trauma and it being traumatic for the child.”

WHAT’S YOUR ACE SCORE? Head to cincinnatifamilymagazine. com or nkyfamily.com to take the 10-question survey. Add up all your “yes” answers to get your ACE Score.

WAYS YOU CAN GET INVOLVED Find out how you can participate during April’s National Child Abuse Prevention Month — turn to “Things to Do” on page 50 for a roundup of opportunities happening locally, courtesy of the Family Nurturing Center. Spring Safety Tips! Spring has sprung and the warm weather means more outside activities for children. Always make sure that your child has sunscreen on while playing outside - make sure it’s waterproof and made for children. Children should always drink plenty of water and stay hydrated while playing sports. They should always wear a helmet while bike riding or skateboarding. Make sure outside equipment is safe – slides should not be hot, swings should be soft, and the ground surface underneath should be energy absorbent. SMALE RIVERFRONT PARK: Everything’s to Love About It! Ride the Carol Ann Carousel, explore the adventure playground, swing and find lots more to do along the Ohio River. By Barbara Littner David

T

here are carousel horses, of course: Zinzinnati Oktoberfest Horse, Observatory Horse, and Cincinnati Baseball Horse, among others, but the Carol Ann Carousel at Smale Riverfront Park also allows guests to ride on a gorilla, an elephant, a car and a frog prince. Even more unusual, riders can saddle up on a selection of pigs, an Ohio River Catfish, a Bearcat, Bengal Tiger, and a variety of insects, including a Cincinnati Cicada and the Queen Bee. Housed inside glass, the carousel features 44 Cincinnati inspired characters, along with panels depicting historic Cincinnati landmarks. Smale Park, itself, is now among Cincinnati’s most popular landmarks. In addition to the iconic carousel, the 40-acre park, located along the Ohio River, between Great American Ballpark and Paul Brown Stadium, features endless opportunities for family fun.

PLAY! The Heekin Family/PNC “Grow up Great” Adventure Playground is a fully accessible playground near the Roebling Suspension Bridge. Its rock canyon challenges kids to climb to the top of the twin slides, and then race to the bottom. Young adventurers can cross the swinging rope bridge, balance on climbing logs, and hop across stepping stones. Meanwhile, parents and grandparents

Swing with the kids and enjoy the breeze on the Rosenberg Swings by the Roebling Bridge.

can play along, or relax and watch from the playground’s ample seating. And, when summer heats up, a fog mist keeps kids cool.

COOL DOWN! When rising temperatures call for more than a mist, visit the Sue & Joe Pichler Family Fountains. Underground, a 26,000-gallon tank and two miles of piping filter and recycle water, for the three spectacular aboveground features. An urban waterfall flows in two cascades along the Grand Staircase on Vine Street, and rain curtains shower from glass balconies. But it’s the 61-head Splash-andPlay feature that provides wet and wild fun as kids stomp on, sit on, and revel in the spray. And at night it all gets a little cooler, as colored lights illuminate these spectacular water features. There’s more water fun at the P&G Go VibrantScape. From the top of the Oinkithopter, a climbing structure in the shape of a flying pig, climbers can get a view of the entire riverfront, or at least a scale map of it. A granite three-dimensional model of Cincinnati’s riverfront teaches about flooding. Man the pumps and turn the Archimedes’ screw to release water, and then control the rising river by opening and closing model flood gates. And for those who want mood music for the flood, or accompaniment for the flapping wings of the Oinkithopter, there’s a giant piano. Musicians and curious toe tappers

“Where Every Family Matters.”

can jump on the keys of the two-octave foot piano to ring the 32 chimes overhead.

LEARN! Experience more immersive learning at the Black Brigade Monument. Described as “a place of reflection, blending facts, poetry and art,” the monument tells the story of the Black Brigade, volunteers of African descent who constructed barricades to defend Cincinnati from Confederate attack during the Civil War. The area physically echoes the fortifications built by the brigade, and includes bronze statues, interpretive signs, and carved stones naming all 718 members of the brigade. Smale has everything else we love about parks: grassy fields for Frisbees and kites, beautiful flora and fauna in the Gardner Family Grove & Rose Garden, picnic tables, and paved pathways for biking and walking. And there are swings. On both the east and west sides of the Roebling Bridge, the Rosenberg Swings, family-sized, trellis-shaded porch swings, welcome park-goers to sit, swing and relax, and watch the river roll by. J Barbara Littner David is a local writer and mother of five. She’s author of Cincinnati Trips for Kids, a collection of Cincinnati-area attractions.

EXPERIENCE: Highfield Discovery Garden By Tina Pratt After a week of learning about dinosaurs at school, it only made sense to go to the Highfield Discovery Garden for their dinosaur educational program. We had never been to Glenwood Gardens, so I was excited to check the place out with my daughter. After paying for our admission ($2 per person!) we skipped out the doors and towards the Highfield Discovery Garden. It was a peaceful trip down the path to the BIG 25-foot tall tree. It was a bit chilly, so we were the only ones on the path. My daughter immediately recognized how peaceful it was and smiled with excitement when she heard birds chirping! We also spotted a GIANT squirrel (for real … it was the biggest one I’ve ever seen) on our way down to the garden workshop for the program with the naturalist. The naturalist taught us about dinosaurs, including what their names mean. She also showed us many fossils including a dinosaur bone, dinosaur egg and fossilized dino poop! As soon as my daughter heard it was poop she let go of it and asked for a wipe. I couldn’t help but giggle. We also got to see dinosaur figurines, play with puppets and color a dinosaur picture. When the educational program was over, we headed outside to explore the garden. We followed footprints imprinted on the path and tried to figure out which animal the prints came from. The prints lead us to the 25-foot play structure shaped like a tree … although my 2-year-old daughter thought it was a bit scary. Luckily, if your kiddo finds it frightening, you can enter from the backside which is not as “scary.” We had a blast bouncing on the bridge over the water and waving to the frogs. Sister enjoyed “hiding” under the play mushrooms as she said they looked like umbrellas. We also enjoyed going into the play house and having a tea party together. After our tea party, we decided it was time to head home for dinner. We look forward to heading back out to Glenwood Gardens when everything is in bloom! Highfield Discovery Garden is located inside Glenwood Gardens (10397 Springfield Pike). Call 513-521-7275 or visit greatparks.org/parks/glenwood-gardens/the-highfielddiscovery-garden.
