Building a Foundation for Your Kids

When I was a kid, I wanted to sign up for every activity in the book. It began with cheerleading, then it was dance, softball, track, chess club, choir, drama- you name it. Needless to say, from my childhood to my teenage years, I had my parents running amuck. Was I passionate about every extracurricular? No, and some of my interests just came and went like the wind. There were, however, those few sports/activities that I loved the most. And today I thank my parents for introducing me to all of it.

It all started with cheerleading. I remember how badly I wanted to be on the cheer team. I started a new school in the middle of my second grade year, and I can vividly recall all of the friends that I made. This one particular day, I saw one of my new friends bounce up out of her seat after class and grab her cheer poms out of her cubby. The intercom buzzed in, listing o the end-of-the-day announcements. I heard there were cheer tryouts, and just like that, a light bulb went o in my little kid brain. That’s what I wanted to do, I wanted to be a cheerleader. As soon as I got home, I begged my mom to sign me up. We were late signing up, but I was allowed to jump into tryouts, hoping I could learn the choreography in time - I had two days. The day they announced who made it on the team, I was holding my mom’s hand tight. We were assigned a number - I was number ‘0’ - and I watched my friends being called, one-by-one. I saw disappointment in some kids’ faces and I sank. Then to my surprise, the final number was called, “Number ‘0’.” My mom and I bounced up and down like a bunch of jelly beans. From that day through my senior year in high school, I cheered. I competed in competitions and added dance into the mix, and that was my thing. Above everything else, cheer and dance were my number one.

I love it when I hear the confidence in my kids’ voices, and I see the cute, excited expressions on their faces when they are sure they want to do something. When their minds are set on a sport or activity, I have no regrets signing them up and going all in. Over the years, my big kids have slowly eliminated little activities they were once involved in, and I see it narrowing down to one or two main interests as the years go by. All of the little things I signed them up for - pee wee soccer, Tball, basketball - have merged into bigger things. I believe those “little things” helped them learn the foundations of sports and playing with a team. It also kept them active and strong! Now, they chose their “thing”; their niche. (For now, at least.) But it brings joy to me knowing they are truly in it and they enjoy it.

So when you sign your kids up for a million little things when they are little, know that you are building a pathway for them to explore more and beyond. One day, they will just know what their thing is. And you as a parent should be proud of that because you helped get them there. The next time you wonder if you are wasting your time as you watch your toddler pick dandelions in the soccer field, don’t. That little toddler will one day learn from that experience and find their thing!

Strength Training for Kids

Back when we were kids, strength training for kids didn’t often cross our minds. Lifting weights or performing any sort of resistance training was thought to cause injury to kids’ growth plates. After years of research and studies, experts have actually discovered the exact opposite.

“It is good and encouraged to participate in resistance training to improve balance and coordination,” says Kate Berz, DO, assistant program director at Pediatric Sports Medicine Fellowship; and Grant Poston, physical therapist I at the Division of Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. “Powerlifting, maxing out and body building should be avoided until skeletally mature.”

But before your kids hit the weights, there are some rules that come along with it. First, it is recommended that kids begin a resistance training program gradually, especially if they are starting from scratch. It takes some time and practice to build these newfound skills.

“For example, increasing running mileage 10 percent per week until full volume is reached,” says Berz and Poston. “This helps avoid overuse injuries. Each kid is different, and this increase depends on where they are starting, their experience and what stage of growth they are in.”

Their growth says a lot about when they should start a strength training program and the amount of loads and repetitions they

should be taking on throughout the week. Kids who have not hit puberty, for example, should not yet focus on strength training. Instead, they should focus more on technique. Once they hit puberty, they can slowly add on new exercises and increase weights/ repetitions to improve their fitness and keep them interested, says Marc Schneider, MD, orthopedics & sports medicine physician at The Christ Hospital Health Network.

“Prior to puberty, when hormone levels are relatively low, strength training can improve muscle tone, but won’t significantly increase muscle bulk,” explains Schneider. “As your child goes through puberty, strength training will actually cause the muscle to hypertrophy (bulk up).”

The goal of strength training prior to puberty is to gain coordination, balance and to develop foundational skills, adds Berz and Poston.

Benefits of Strength Training

So if you are wondering when it is OK for your kids to begin a strength training program, the answer is, there is no particular age that is the right age to start, according to Berz and Poston. However, your kids should be motivated to strength train on their own without adult pressure, should be able to follow directions and the goal is proper form and not heavy weights. In addition, your kids should be supervised by an adult or a certified strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS)

or a certified personal trainer. From here, the benefits are endless and worth every squat and pushup.

“Regular participation in resistance training favorably affects overall health, reduces injury, improves motor skills and sports performance,” they continue. “Strength training helps with insulin sensitivity, cardiac function, positively affects bone health and is fun for kids to participate in together.”

Strength Training and Sports

If your kiddo is signed up for an upcoming sport, it’s important to prep them physically by participating in a strength training program taught at a local facility or have them partake in team conditioning. Always keep in mind that the ultimate goals are to have fun, exercise, gain skills and be with friends.

“The American Academy of Pediatrics has a recommendation for no more than one sport/ team per season, one to two days off from scheduled activity per week, three months off per year; hours of participation per week should be less than the child’s age,” says Berz and Poston. “We also recommend that a child only participate in one sport per day. Children should also have proper nutrition, proper sleep and proper hydration.”

EXPECTINGEverything to Know

If you are having complications during your pregnancy, your OB/Gyn may not prescribe to you what was once referred to as “bed rest” but rather “activity restriction.” Over the years, bed rest has actually been known to cause more problems than solutions to your pregnancy which is why the term “bed rest” is increasingly becoming known as “modified activity” or “activity restriction” amongst physicians.

From Bed Rest to Modified Activity

Whether you’ll be asked to actually “put your feet up” really boils down to your practitioner’s preference. According to Andrew Chang, MD with Kettering Health Medical Group OB-GYN, bed rest has been commonly thought to help with preterm labor/preterm birth and possibly preeclampsia. However, over time, evidence has shown that that not only does it not help prevent those things, it may increase risk of blood clots, deconditioning and bone demineralization.

“Modified activity, weight lifting restrictions, and pelvic rest are more commonly recommended to obstetric patients who are at increased risk for preterm labor, vaginal bleeding and preterm premature rupture of membranes,” Chang explains.

Your #1 Hometown Family Resource 12 april 2023 feature
A growing number of physicians are moving away from the concept of strict bed rest. Now, it’s recommended for moms having complications in pregnancy to partake in “modified activity.”

EXPECTING About “Bed Rest”

About an estimated 20 percent of pregnancies in the U.S. each year are being prescribed activity restriction by their OB/Gyns. According the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, “there are no studies documenting an improvement in outcomes in women at risk for preterm birth who are placed on activity restriction, including bed rest and there are multiple studies documenting untoward effects of routine activity restriction on the mother and family, including negative psychosocial effects.” Therefore, the ACOG does not recommend traditional bed rest stating that there is no evidence that it actually helps prevent or treat pregnancy complications.

Modified activity may mean avoiding lifting objects less than 20 pounds, avoiding anything in the vagina and not overdoing things, says Chang.

“I recommend mothers to continue their daily activity, but avoid excessive activity like exercise, but to continue daily living activities,” he continues.

When Modified Activity May be Ordered

Your doctor might prescribe either modified activity at home or admission for observation at the hospital if you are experiencing major complications in your pregnancy. Although there is no “one size fits all” in this situation, in general, if you are at risk for preterm labor, vaginal bleeding, preeclampsia, preterm premature rupture of membranes, multiple babies, impaired fetal growth or have discomfort in your third trimester, you would qualify for modified activity at home, says Chang.

Since bed rest is not recommended by many physicians due to its risk of causing blood clots and other complications during pregnancy, your doctor might instead put you under the hospital’s care due to complications or give you restricted activity to do at home.

“We don’t recommend strict bed rest so depending on the diagnosis that warranted modified activity they can even continue to do

low intensity exercise (ie. brisk walking),” says Chang.

Reduced activity at home/work might mean to shorten your workday in your third trimester, schedule regular times to rest and restrict activities such as exercise, stair-climbing and walking or standing for extended lengths of time. In general, reduced activity outside the hospital means you’re still up and walking around, doing some work, easy errands and light chores. So don’t expect to have to sit and kick your feet up for long periods of time.

Reduced activity at the hospital would mean constant monitoring at the hospital, which means hospital admission. By nature, you can expect to spend some more time in bed than if you were at home. However, since there are concerns about prolonged inactivity, doctors will often take steps to make sure you remain healthy by prescribing light physical therapy during your stay, blood thinners and/or leg compression devices to prevent leg clots and physical therapy with prolonged hospitalizations.

Finding Support

Pregnancy alone can bring many challenges, and if you add modified activity or hospital observation to the mix, this can take a toll on a woman’s mental health. Undergoing complications in pregnancy while being limited to everyday life activities is hard for anyone, which is why having supportive family and friends by your side can make this whole process easier.

“I think having a good support network is critical,” says Chang. “Asking friends, family, or significant others for help is a good starting point. Seeking help from a licensed Behavioral Health Specialist would be another good source.”

For the most part, many women who are recommended for modified activity in the outpatient setting normally adjust, he continues. The time where mental health becomes a concern is when moms are admitted for preterm, premature rupture of membranes,

putting them in the hospital for weeks during their pregnancy.

“I think having good social support is key,” Chang says. “Keeping busy with activities, games, walking around the unit, going outside for short periods of time (if allowed by the staff) can all be accommodations to help mothers cope with this.”

Connecting with Your Mental Health

No one said this time would be easy. It will bring many challenges, so finding ways to support your mental health is key during this time.

Stay connected. This is when you need your friends, family the most, and don’t forget your OB/Gyn. Reach out to support groups on social media to connect with other moms maybe going through the same thing.

Structure your day. Establishing a routine, whether it be penciling in a quick walk around the neighborhood, or organizing your paperwork, routine is routine.

Work from home. Ask your boss if you can work remotely as long as your practitioner and supervisor are all on the same page.

Pick up a new hobby. Get crafty or teach yourself some new tricks and trades.

Organize and get ready for Baby. This is a great time to get your photos organized and gather everything you need for your new bundle’s arrival.

Start a journal. Recording your thoughts can help you express how you feel and help you cope with your mental health.

Seek support. Modifying your activity in pregnancy can be very emotionally challenging. Never hesitate to reach out to a family member, friend or mental health specialist for support.

We See the Importance of Regular Vision Screenings

From birth until about age 8, a child’s eyes and brain form vital connections. Anything that blocks or blurs vision in one or both eyes can slow down or prevent these connections.

Does your child:

• have crossed eyes?

• squint frequently?

• tilt their head to see better?

Regular vision screenings by health care providers are an important part of finding any problems in kids.
