best birthdays come from YOU
he photographs you take of your child’s next birthday will tell the story ... or not. What kind of story will it be? One in which you are racing around grousing that you don’t have time to throw a birthday party? One in which you are frazzled and unhappy looking in the shots? Or one where those in the shot are smiling, bright-eyed, and you are, too? That’s the one your child will remember. There’s a shot I have of my backyard when I was about 6 years old. I am in a frilly party dress, I have a party hat on and I am smiling ear to ear. Seeing that photo, I remember my mother. She was a stayat-home mom who volunteered for a million things. She was one of the greatest Girl Scout moms in town. She also made our Halloween costumes every year, cooked dinner every night, cleaned our house, took care of our pets and cars, paid the bills, found time for substitute teaching and time for taking a role in a play every now and then. She had been a professional actress before she had children so she found a way to keep that passion for her first love alive. Because she kept a passion for the things she personally loved alive, she was able to be happy for us, a fun mom, and with every memory I have of her, she is smiling, laughing and involved. That’s the kind of mom I want my children to remember me to be. With all that I do, I hope that what I offer them is a warm and loving mother who has the time they need from me. So it’s refreshing that birthdays are going basic again. We are returning to being involved in our children’s special day and not just paying a whopping $300 for someone else to take our role away from us. Bring back the simple joy of a birthday party where you are snapping the pictures, where you are cutting the cake, where you are playing along in the games. There is one life to live with your children. I have four and they are growing up too fast. There’s nothing I can do about that and suddenly I find myself wanting to stop time ... wanting those in-the-trenches days where I fell exhausted and weary into my bed after chasing roustabout younger-than-10s around all day long. Believe it or not, those photos you are snapping today will soon enough be forgotten in a digital file ... to be discovered (hopefully) one day by a curious member of your family who wants to remember you and wants to remember you well. What will it be? When they open up that file or look at that print will they see you in the shot involved and playful? Or will you be out of the picture with some unknown person cutting the cake for your child? These are the moments of your life and your child’s life that are meant to be special. But they only are special if you are front and center. Center your heart around your children. And don’t let any amount of money take that away from you!

NOW TAKING NOMINATIONS! Does your child love his doctor? Does your doctor take time to listen and respond to your concerns or go above and beyond” in some ways?
WHO HAS BEEN NOMINATED SO FAR? Betsy Peerless, M.D. Health First Physicians, Mason
Morissa Ladinsky, M.D. Group Health Associates, Mason
She guides me to think and act as a parent on my own. Whenever I ask her thoughts on something she always replies, “First, you have to do what makes you comfortable.” Then she will give a story or her thoughts. She never makes me feel like my decisions are “wrong.” Claire Wellington
My kids, as well as myself, LOVE Dr. Ladinsky. She is so fun, and vibrant and has so much compassion for children and for my kids. She listens to everything I say or ask about for each one of my three kids, even if they are not the ones being seen at the time. She has supported us on taking matters in our own hands when it comes to seeing specialists when needed. She NEVER makes me feel inadequate as a mom. She always tells me I am doing everything right and what is best for my kids. She encourages me to stick through things when I share my concerns. She’s extremely open minded and I know she has my back. Emily Long
Jeff Drasnin, M.D. ESD Pediatric Group, Milford Dr. Drasnin is amazing with my children! My son has a very rare chromosonal condition (only 18 in the world have it) and Dr. Drasnin has been very supportive and helpful with setting up testing, therapies and specialists for my son. He has been with us every step of the way even offering to just talk when I am feeling overwhelmed about a situation. He treats my son like an equal and doesn’t ignore him or talk over his head like some of his doctors do. The office has an e-mail system where you can ask questions and get quick answers, the staff is super friendly and if you have an emergency they fit you into their schedule where they can. They play a huge part in our lives! Courtney Retherford
Ronna Schneider, M.D. Suburban Pediatrics Associates, Inc. Liberty Township Dr. Schneider is amazing! She meets the mom where she is and tells you straight what she recommends. She balances her medical training with her heart and her gut to help you determine the best care for your child. We came to Dr. Schneider during my son’s infancy which was not the typical story. He had the worst colic (screaming at the top of his lungs for 14 - 21 hours daily) and was not eating well, bloody stool, and terrible bouts of constipation. Things were really off track. She looked at the entire situation and put us on a track for success and improvement. I will be forever grateful to her and the rest of the staff at Suburban Pediatrics! Dawn Mansour
These are just a couple of the doctors that have been nominated for Favorite Docs. Nominations are still open, and we want to hear who you would choose. Cast your vote today for our 2012 list at

Infant Swim Resources for Youngsters & More
S
ummer time means water time and parents will need to be extra vigilant of little ones around bodies of water, large or small. Swimming for tots should begin as soon as possible, says the American Academy of Pediatrics (aap.org), but just because kids know how to swim doesn’t mean they can be unattended in the water. That same message has been taught for years in Infant Swim Resource (ISR) classes — programs designed to teach children as young as 6 months old life-saving skills in the water through daily one-on-one sessions lasting only 10 minutes with a Certified ISR Instructor. ISR classes see to it that children learn to hold their breath underwater, roll onto their back, float unassisted, and rest and breathe until help arrives. Older children are taught a swim-float-swim technique as they make their way to the edge of a pool. Children first learn to perform these tasks while in swim diapers or swim trunks, then they learn the same skills while fully clothed, so they learn what it feels like should they accidentally tumble into a pool. Find local instructors at infantswim.com. Many area pools offer parent/child swim lessons that encourage babies and toddlers to become comfortable in the water, teaching them basic skills like floating, and preparing them for formal swim lessons.

Throw your child a BEST BIRTHDAY by keeping things simple at home or by heading out to one of the area’s top party spots!
O
By Sherry Hang
K, so maybe we can’t all surprise our little ones with a birthday trip to Disney World, but Greater Cincinnati has plenty of ways to “go big” for
your child’s special day. Want to party with dinosaurs? Gotcha covered. Throw out the first pitch at a baseball game? Presto! Read on ...
Totally A-Maze-N Trains rule the day at EnterTRAINment Junction (entertrainmentjunction.com), but birthday parties can really go off the rails (we mean that in a good way!). Enjoy everything from refreshments to party supplies, a private party room and admission to EnterTRAINment Journey, but the real fun lies in the bonus packages and the center’s rotating “journeys.” Kids are drawn to the A-Maze-N FunHouse — a wacky tour that leads you through a mirror maze, a tilt room and more oddities. “Opening the A-Maze-N FunHouse really spoke to our audience and further expanded requests for birthday parties, which were always popular,” says Don Oeters, owner of EnterTRAINment Junction. “But now we have taken it to the next level in attracting the 6- to 12-year-olds because of the mix of unique attractions we offer,” he adds. Party prices range from $159 - $249 for up to 25 guests, with bonus options available.
Be sure to visit our web site at cincinnatifamilymagazine.com or nkyfamily.com for even more party ideas! Train lovers will enjoy a party at EnterTRAINment Junction.

Reds fans can step into their favorite players’ shoes (or, a-hem, jerseys) at the Reds Hall of Fame and Museum (cincinnati.reds.mlb.com/cin/hof/index.jsp). Parties begin at $175 and kick off in a private room with refreshments, a film on the team’s history and then a tour of the Museum. Kids have a great time calling famous plays in the broadcast booth says Special Projects Coordinator Colin Ethier, or even playing Xbox baseball in the Kids’ Club House, where they can also try on team jerseys. For an additional fee, party-goers get a ticket voucher to a Reds game at the Great American Ball Park. RSVP in advance, Ethier says since the timing of a game effects availability. Head a little farther south, and you can have a birthday bash at Florence Freedom’s ballpark (florencefreedom.com). “We’re a very child-oriented park,” says Denise Newbolt. Along with a kids’ zone, a summer reading club, on-field activities and campouts, the team’s birthday parties include all the usual fixings, visits with mascots Belle, Liberty and the Freedom, a custom cake from Newport’s Fantasy in Frosting, and best of all, the birthday child gets to throw out the ceremonial first pitch! Parties start at $195 for 10 people.
Ages 1 - 12 can party at Cincinnati Museum Center (cincymuseum.org), with parties for 25 guests in your chosen museum, programming led by an educational presenter, refreshments (including cake) and clean-up. Kids can choose from a bunch of themes, including construction, animals, a tea party, dinosaurs, space or an Egyptian theme. Call at least two weeks in advance — prices are $200 for members and $225 for nonmembers.
From Peanuts to Dinos Ten - 15 or more friends can party with the Peanuts gang at Kings Island (visitkingsisland.com) or kick it in the Dinosaurs Alive! Prehistoric Party Pavilion. Dino fans will get a party guide to show off the lifesized creatures, while Snoopy lovers can enjoy a private party room for the birthday child and his friends, including a visit from the Peanuts gang for a small additional fee. Perks include refreshments, discount admission coupons for Kings Island (or in the case of a Snoopy Party, admission tickets to the park and waterpark), reserved VIP parking for the birthday child, special gifts and more. Parties are scheduled at set times, and prices range from $19.99 per person (for a Dinosaurs Alive! Party) up to $41.37 per person (for a Peanuts and Snoopy Party). Discounts are available for season pass holders.
Action and Adventure Does your kid love the thrill of the chase? Let him and his friends go nuts with laser tag missions at Lazer Kraze (lazerkraze.com), at either of their two locations or in your own backyard, since these guys will bring the games to you. Parties include two missions for up to ten kids, and all the usual suspects — refreshments, a party room, a party coach and a return pass for the birthday boy or girl. Customizations are available, and a special Munchkin Madness party is available on Saturday mornings for younger kids. Birthday parties at the Erlanger location can range from laser tag to a party in the new indoor trampoline arena. Prices start around $129 and go up from there. Lazer Kraze also offers limo service so kids can arrive in style (an excellent option for the “Diva Spa Party”)! Just because a venue doesn’t offer a specific party package doesn’t mean you can’t take advantage of its offerings. Ozone Zip Line (campkern.org/ozone) is a great place for adventurous young ones (provided they are at least 10 years old, weigh 80 pounds, and you have one willing adult per child). A traditional tour ($75 per person) includes seven zip lines, seven Skybridges and a central tower and takes about three hours. Although most tours stick to eight people, Ozone’s Chris Addison reassures parents that his staff is prepared for birthday celebrations and can manage groups larger than eight. All you need to do is give some advance notice and RSVP at least two weeks out.
See life-sized dinosaurs at Kings Island as part of the Dinosaurs Alive! Prehistoric Party.
Water Babies The season for pool parties is here so why not hit up some of the largest pools in the area? Head over to Coney Island’s Sunlite Pool (coneyislandpark. com) for swimming, food from LaRosa’s, ice cream, miniature golf, and Poster Dart at the Games of Skill Arcade. Price is $18 per person, with a minimum of eight. (If your child’s not into water fun, choose the all-day admission to Coney’s Classic Rides.) Your birthday child and nine of his closest friends can spend the day at CoCo Key Water Resort (cocokeycincinnati.com) — for $29.99 per person, you get two hours of swim time, one hour in a private party room, a birthday meal, cake, a $5 arcade card and more.

A party with friends is certainly nothing to sniff at, but perhaps your child’s birthday is a great excuse for the family to do something special together. An overnight adventure at Great Wolf Lodge (greatwolf.com/mason) gives you access to their 79,000-squre-foot water park featuring the Hydro Plunge, River Canyon Run and Alberta Falls, as well as awesome games like MagiQuest, themed guest rooms with special areas just for the little ones, an arcade, and the Scoops Kid Spa. Even planning a party is a perfect chance for some bonding time with your birthday child. Says Krissy McWhorter, “My daughter Mackenzie is a super creative and helpful little girl so she is very involved in her party planning every year. We first decide what we want to ‘do’ for the party. Bowling, bounce house, Minute-to-Win-It tournament (a BIG hit last year), a sleepover, etc. Then we decide on the colors and pattern of the paper goods, including invitations, plate, napkins, tablecloths and other items. We usually make our own invitations since I’m a scrapbooker, but a super easy way to get kids involved is to design one on the computer.” And while baking a cake together may be a little messy, there’s room for creativity here too. McWhorter recommends making cupcakes and simply adding gel food coloring to pre-made vanilla icing.

Just for the Family
Mix It Up If you’re not up for a completely homemade party, consider a combination of an off-site adventure and a party at home. A scavenger hunt at Cincinnati Art Museum (cincinnatiartmuseum.org) followed by some art-making fun in Artworld is a great way to occupy kids before heading into Eden Park for a picnic. Speaking of picnics, there’s nothing easier than renting a park shelter and providing all the fun and games yourself, but if you want to up your game a bit, consider coordinating your party with one of Hamilton County Parks’ new Picnic & Play Packages at Miami Whitewater Forest (greatparks.org), or with one of Cincinnati Parks’ many nature-themed programs that are designed for all ages (cincinnatiparks.com). The Cincinnati Nature Center’s Nature PlayScape (cincynature.org) gives kids room to explore the natural world, guided by their imagination — you can bring items from home or borrow from the center, including magnifying glasses for inquisitive minds, bug boxes for those who don’t mind a little “ick,” and trowels and buckets for those who just like to get dirty. You can picnic on the grass or benches.

Sure you can let someone else host your child’s party, but be an active participant when it’s time for the special day, says author Marnie Ann Pacino in her book Cool Party, Mom! The Other Three Words Every Mother Loves to Hear (Create Space; $16.95). Find tips, resouces and all kinds of ideas for real moms needing easy-to-do. Throwing a party does take a can-do mindset, though. “I am doing everything myself,” says Elsmere mom Erica O’Bryan of her son’s upcoming Lego-themed party. “I made Lego invitations out of card stock and cut out circles to make them look like Legos, I’m making Lego jewelry for the goodie bags, and I’m making my own Lego-inspired cake and piñata.” With that much homemade goodness, O’Bryan’s party is sure to be remembered!

make summer
count! T Local moms share terrific tips for weaving fun and learning into your children’s summer. he bell will ring, the doors will fly open and the kids will be full of summer an-
ticipation as they burst from the school buildings. And
yes, the first couple of days of summer vacation are
great, but as parents, we
know that exuberance starts to wane after a week or so.
So many parents enroll their kids in summer camps or
additional educational classes. Others see this time as
a chance to provide educational enrichment opportunities best suited to their child’s interests or needs. It is a chance to indulge in hobbies that spark your child’s creativity and your own.

make summer
count!
As a mom of four, turning my house into a classroom for the summer is not appealing, so I look for nontraditional ways to help my kids stay connected to their brains until classes start in the fall. Yet for many of us, if we are not intentional, the summer will pass in a haze of sleeping in, watching TV and playing video games. So we asked parents and educators for ideas on how to have an educationally fun summer with your family.
Inspiring Reading Stacy Neal is a mom of five, who favors a laid back approach to summer. She says that since her family’s school year is extremely structured, she will give her kids a break for a while. Yet Stacy’s kids love to read, so she takes advantage of the Cincinnati Public Library reading programs (cincinnatilibrary.org). The Library offers four age-based programs that kick off June 1, with a variety of games and events at each location. The kids enjoy earning prizes as they accomplish their reading goals. For Northern Kentucky residents, the library systems in Boone, Kenton and Campbell county all offer summer reading programs (bcpl.org, kentonlibrary.org and cc-pl. org). The Scholastic Summer Challenge (scholastic.com/summer) and the Barnes & Noble summer reading program (barnesandnoble.com/ summerreading/index.asp) are good options for avid readers as well. One of my kid’s favorite activities is family read alouds. For years, we have picked books that appealed to our whole family and I read them aloud after dinner. My boy plays with Legos quietly, while his sisters color or draw and Dad does Sudoku. It’s nothing special, but they love it. As a matter of fact, I thought that as they got older they wouldn’t want me to read to them anymore, but I was wrong. My teenagers will make suggestions of what books we could read and will remind me if I take too long in starting a new book. For Allison Koontz, mom of three elementary boys, she has found a phone app called Scientific Tuesdays (revision3.com/scientifictuesdays) to be useful. She says the app gives specific instructions for simple science experiments that
20 May 2012
CF 18-21 (SummerFun).indd 20
her boys will have fun doing, while learning in the process. For kids who enjoy experiments, this is an easy way for parents to get quick ideas that use items already around the house.
Learning Naturally Jen Isaacs, mom and elementary teacher, says summer is time for her son to enjoy all things outside. One of their favorite activities is “creeking.” She says they enjoy talking about what lives in the creek. They also take advantage of the city’s many parks and nature trails. Jen says there are so many fun, educational things to do outside in the summer, that even a nighttime walk can become a learning event when you talk about how it is different from the daytime and why. For more information on park activities, check out cincinnatiparks.com or greatparks.org, and visit the Cincinnati Nature Center’s website at cincynature.org. I have always loved zoos and Cincinnati has a good one. No matter how old your kids are the Zoo never seems to lose its appeal. Since my children range in age from 16 to 1, there is something for everyone there, including me. The Zoo is intentional about providing opportunities to engage your child’s mind, so you don’t have to come up with all the ideas yourself. To find out more about Zoo hours and programs, go to cincinnatizoo.org.
Learning at Home Give your children practice reading and writing in everyday situations. Have them keep a summer journal of all the things they want to remember to share when they get back to school. This is a great way to encourage your child to practice writing and it will be a wonderful keepsake when they are older. Use your family garden to inspire journaling. Kids can write down questions and observations as your plants grow. Take the time to get involved in your community. PBS offers fun ideas on their website ZOOM (pbskids.org/zoom), including volunteering at a soup kitchen, taking part in a park clean up and other service ideas. Helping others can boost kid’s self esteem and encourage them to focus
on others. Many of us take advantage of the extra time in the summer to watch more movies. The site Kids Off the Couch (kidsoffthecouch.com) is a website that takes the films, books, music and media that kids love and uses them to inspire family adventures. This is a great way to combine entertainment and learning.
Learning From Afar Even a family vacation can be an opportunity to expand your kid’s mental horizons. Theresa McClure, veteran mom of seven, will take her crew to Washington D.C. this year. She says that asking questions is sometimes all it takes to get your kids thinking and start a learning conversation. One of the topics that she plans on instigating is about leadership. Theresa wants to get her kids thinking about what makes a person a good leader and what type of president do they want to lead their country. She feels that seeing the Capital and being at the White House will make these questions more alive for her kids. Also, it gives her an opportunity to encourage them to be good leaders. Regardless of where you travel, there is always something new to discover. If heading to the beach, check out a few books on what types of creatures you may see there. Learn about why there are waves and tides. Then talk about those things as you squish your toes in the sand ... and oh, what makes different colors of sand? Why do we need to wear sunscreen? Teaching our kids doesn’t have to be structured. It doesn’t require formal planning. It just takes time, an open ear and guided questions. As Kristen Dooley, mom of two girls says, “Learning is a part of life.” We teach our kids from the time they enter the world, we hold their fingers and help them stand, then walk, how to drink from a cup, hold a spoon, how to tie their shoes. Parents are some of the most natural teachers in the world. So launch into summer on a mission to explore a new galaxy with your kids, and they will be all the brighter for it. It’s as easy as starting in your own backyard. J Mysti Koontz is a local writer and mother.
