editor's note By Amanda Ciani

Children Bloom, Too READERS: Editor Amanda Hayward is on maternity leave. Her column will return next month.

M

ay flowers are blooming. It is so magical to watch the whole process occur. From meer seeds to sprouts and then one day … they unveil a beautiful flower atop a sturdy stem. It brings about a sense of wonder when you think about how something so tiny can become a colorful joy-bringing bloom. With each changing season, it is easy to reflect on my own children’s growth. As the spring days get sunnier and warmer, my three sons are shedding their long-sleeved shirts and pants to show off their new wardrobes. Longer arms and lankier legs emerge as I marvele at how grown they suddenly appeare. It feels like it happened overnight — they are growing like weeds! Looking at my boys' physical change and growth, I also need to take a moment to reflect on how I can help my children be sturdy so they too can blossom and flourish in life. How am I preparing them to stand strong? What things can I do now to set them up for emotional success? In what ways can I teach them to be independent? There are no simple one-size-fits-all parenting answers, but I do have three tips parents can work on to help their little ones grow: • Lead through example. • Model behavior: use manners, empathy and patience! Little ears are great at listening and you are your child’s biggest role model. • Find teaching moments in every single day. Cooking dinner, cleaning and doing laundry are all a part of life. Listen to tunes to make it a little more fun or simply talk about your day! • Encourage open dialogue. • Life can be hard, but it helps to talk about it! Find solutions and navigate the tough stuff together. While there are cloudy days in nature and in parenthood, remember that kind words are like water and encouragement is like a ray of sunshine. This month, press pause and appreciate where your children are right now, reflect in where they were not too long ago, and dream about the future. Enjoy the process and marvel in the beauty. Amanda Ciani is associate and entertainment editor. She is the mom of three boys. 2 may 2021

EDITOR PICKS TOP 3 Baby-safe Sunscreens • Neutrogena Pure & Free Sunscreen SPF 50 • Thinksport Sunscreen SPF 50 • Baby & Child Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50 by Mustela

A

Sun Smart and How

re you in too much of a rush to put sunscreen on your kids? Don’t be. Build a little extra time into your routine on sunny days because young skin requires 30 minutes for that protective film to develop. Also, be aware that skin cancer in adults is directly related to sunburns in childhood. First things first: The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) emphasizes babies younger than 6 months stay out of direct sunlight. Instead, protect them with shade, use sun hats and protective clothing rather than relying on sunscreen alone since it’s not recommended for ages under 6 months.

With the sunniest season upon us know how to protect your precious children’s skin.

Never Say “Sunblock” Sunblock or sunscreen? Is there really any difference? And is that the only way to protect kids? Manufacturers of sun products ditched the term “sunblock” years ago. And while chemical sunscreens are the most common product for filtering ultraviolet rays to protect kids from UVA and UVB rays, sun safety includes more. “Sun protection involves several different things,” says Pranav Sheth, M.D, a dermatologist at Group Health

By Susan Day

cincinnatifamilymagazine.com

— a TriHealth physician partner. “Many people think of sunscreen, but that’s not the only way to get sun protection,” Sheth explains. Parents can help little ones to avoid direct, excess sunlight between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.; have kids wear protective clothing and wide-brimmed hats; reapply sunscreen every two hours and check light skin periodically for damage. Children with blonde or red hair, blue eyes and a family history of skin cancer are more prone to sunburn, so be particularly careful with them. “One can’t undo skin damage,” Sheth says, “however, you can reduce damage and possibly the progression of skin damage with good sun protection measures.” When it comes to applying sunscreen on kids, many doctors have concerns about spray sunscreens since aerosolized particles can be inhaled — especially dangerous for children with asthma or other lung issues. Remember, too, that sunscreens can expire, so follow expiration dates listed on products. Susan Day is editor in chief of this publication and a mom of four.

get your kids in the swim!

Compiled by Amanda Ciani

It’s never too soon to learn about water safety.

A child relying on “floaties” for safety is not water competent. Always be watchful around swimmers — even if you think your kids are excellent swimmers.

I

t’s NEVER too young to start swim lessons. In a 2019 statement, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommended parents start swimming lessons for their children beginning at age 1. “Drowning is the single leading cause of injury-related death among children ages 1 to 4,” says Sarah Denny, M.D., F.A.A.P., lead author of the AAP policy statement, “Prevention of Drowning” published online in Pediatrics.
