Find Time for You, Mom!

Stop saying “I only have one kid” when another mom tells you she has four. Stop canceling your dinner plans with your friends because you feel bad leaving the kids behind. Stop thinking you are not doing enough because you see other moms doing “more.” What I am trying to say is, being a mom is tough, no matter how many kids you have, if you work full-time or part-time, if you have a nanny to help ease the load or if you ask for help every now and then. Give yourself credit for all that you do at the end of the day, afterall it is a lot and more than likely, above and beyond. Being a mom is hard no matter your situation because when you think you aren’t doing the physical part of it, you are taking on the mental load of it all. Therefore, around-the-clock, you are Mom.

Moms these days are just plain burnt out (read more about “Mommy Burnout” on page 12 - yes it’s a real thing!) to where they can no longer juggle their own life interests or hobbies. Feeling like you have to take the load on alone is detrimental to your mental health and well-being. This is why we all need to ask for help (I know, not as easy as it sounds) and take time to ourselves whether that be a trip to Target (alone!); a nail date with your friends; a quick weekend getaway; stepping away from the chaos and finally reading that book; or simply having someone take over the household things-to-do. Always give yourself credit, no matter what. You are doing enough, and yes you do deserve some downtime to unwind - and not just on Mother’s Day.

Here are some great local outing ideas for you to go do solo or with friends! I am an active person but I also enjoy my relaxation time - so this list is a compilation of both:

• Go to the theater or comedy show - The Taft Theatre and Aronoff Center have brilliant shows you can laugh and cry to. Head to cincinnati. broadway.com.

• Go for a walk - I love a good walk on a nice, crisp morning. Arrange for someone to hang with the kids while you explore, alone; or head to meetup.com for weekly group hikes if you want to mingle with other people.

• Head to dinner with your gal pals - Friends are always a great outlet when you need to chat or just sit and laugh about nothing.

• Schedule a Workout - Find your zen in a hot yoga class or pencil in an exercise meetup with the girls - a good sweat session is a great way to flush out toxins and relieve stress. Head to mindbodyonline.com and sign up for a class near you!

What do you do with all of your kids' old school papers and artwork?

“Here is one to keep memories (not specifically artwork): When both of my boys were born, I created email addresses for them when we were in the hospital before we came home. Each week I write them an email. It doesn’t have to be super long but I include pictures and what went on the past week. When they turn 18 I will give them the passwords to their email accounts. It’s an electronic memory book; I did not create this idea, but happy to share it."

“We have a small storage tote that we use as a treasure box. At the end of the school year, we go through what’s accumulated and decide what’s best for tangible memories (ornaments, handprint poems) and what’s best for just a few photos (doodles, scribbled art, anything that can wilt or will mold now or later) and then can be pitched. If it’s photos, we line up all her projects and take a few pictures with her in the center before they get tossed. We try to get a few good close ups so she can see a lot of what she did years later. Her work won’t last, but the memories will."

You’ve made a major life decision — no more kids! So now what? Understand your options and weigh out the risks and benefits of vasectomy or tubal ligation.

No More Kids! Now What?

You’ve created the family you’ve always wanted, and you are done. Now what? It’s time to find your best birth control option that will lead to the next chapter in your life. This could mean a vasectomy for him or tubal ligation (tubes tied) for you. Which is the best way to go?

David Aichholz, OB/Gyn at The Christ Hospital Physicians, says that as long as a couple is certain that they have completed their family, then there are some permanent sterilization options they can choose from.

“For men, a simple vasectomy can be done in the office of a urologist under local anesthesia in most cases,” he explains. “This is quick and easy with low risks in terms of complications. A follow-up semen check with the urologist is needed to be certain that no living sperm are present several weeks after the procedure,” he adds.

The other option is for Mom to have tubal ligation or have her fallopian tubes removed. In other words, a permanent birth control that reduces your chance of getting pregnant to 1 percent. In the past, according to Aichholz, this wasn’t always the case. Before, tubal ligation (having your “tubes tied”) meant doctors would remove only a short segment of the tube, meaning most of your tube would still be left in place.

“While this works for most people, a failure rate is still present of four pregnancies in 10,000 women where half of these failures will be in the tube — or ectopic pregnancies.”

Since this can be very dangerous, many OB/Gyns will now offer what is called “laparoscopic surgery” where they actually remove the whole tube, reducing the chances of fallopian tube cancer and eliminating future risks of ectopic pregnancy.

How it works

If you and your partner made a decision for you to get your tubes removed, then it’s important to understand the risks and benefits, and how the procedure would be done. If having a C-section, a tubal can easily be performed, says Aichholz, where the entire tube is removed on each side after delivery and stitching up the uterus. If you are having a vaginal delivery, you can have them removed afterwards, however, this hasn’t been a favorite amongst doctors.

“This has fallen out of favor due to the risks involved of increased bleeding and the fact that only a portion of each tube can be removed at that time,” explains Aichholz. “I prefer to wait five to six weeks after a vaginal birth and go to the operating room then to laparoscopically remove both tubes at that time.”

Most women will go home the next day, with a recovery time of four to seven days.

Which is Best?

Although a vasectomy is lower risk and less invasive than getting your tubes tied or removed (vasectomy has the lowest risk of failure — unwanted pregnancy — among all sterilization or birth control options including tubal ligation) it is completely up to the couple on how they want to go about this major life decision.

Ask your OB/Gyn what options are best for you and your significant other. There are lots more details that go into each of these procedures, so it’s important to weigh out the pros and cons of each.

“Emotionally, no couple should enter into a sterilization surgery unless they are sure that no further children are desired,” says Aichholz. “It has been my experience that if the decision was made for the right reasons, then no regrets are there afterwards. I think a couple should talk to their health care providers about these issues and then can meet with a Urologist or Ob/Gyn physician to learn more.”

How to Manage

Aas a mom, have you ever gotten to the point where you just didn’t have it in you? You don’t feel like running the errands, shopping, cooking or explaining to your children why they can’t have ice cream before dinner … so, you let them have the ice cream before dinner. You are not alone! Mommy burnout is real and every now and then the symptoms pop up like a sore thumb reminding you that you are in fact human. That burnout we experience simply means that the cup we pour from needs to be refilled.

What exactly is mommy burnout? It can be described a number of ways. Some may agree that it is the culmination of stressors which have peaked from performing at a high level over an extended period of time without waiver. In other words, it is the selfless act of a woman loving

her family and putting them first instinctively. It is a mother who has grown tired, who needs a break and time dedicated to herself. And you know what? All of it is very normal.

To heighten the conversation, as women became a firm fixture in the workforce in the 20th Century it generated study around subjects such as the ability of women to maintain it all for the family’s sake. Research conducted at Maven Clinic in 2020 found that working mothers were 28 percent more likely to experience burnout due to the unequal demands of work-life balance placed on working moms. The expectation: women can get it done. Women can have a career and be great matriarchs. The challenge with that, though, is overcoming the guilt of imperfections within parenting.

ally come to realize as a collective that being a mother is a full-time job. Nurturing, teaching, cleaning, cooking and disciplining while “soft parenting,” although a labor of love, is not for the faint of heart. A woman who commits herself to providing her children and/or partner with her undivided attention day-in and day-out will experience exhaustion. Full-time moms also have task lists and demands that raise stress levels, impacting their mood and overall health as well.

What we must understand about mommy burnout — whether a working mom or a stayat-home mom — is that any prolonged exertion of emotional, mental and physical energy will require recovery time. It’s no different from an athlete leaving the field or getting off the court. Women have to be afforded the opportunity to decompress and rejuvenate from all that they’ve contributed to their household in order to come back to their loved ones whole.

Expressing Your Needs

How can women combat the symptoms of mommy burnout? The reality is, that dropping your cape is not giving up, it is empowering yourself to be free enough to focus on what you need to be your best self. The first step in that freedom is expressing to your partner, family and friends that you’ve reached a critical stage. Asking for help or sharing exactly what your needs are ensures that the message gets delivered to those who care most about you and then provides them with a call-to-action.

“Burnout is a real entity,” says Rivendale. “But what I think moms need to know is what is burnout versus untreated postpartum, anxiety, depression, PTSD or a more severe mental illness. Because there can be a lot of overlap in those symptoms.”

To determine alone how to categorize symptoms is difficult task. Although self-diagnosis is easy, it is not our greatest ally. Consulting with your physician validates the experience from a medical professional’s standpoint.

“The biggest thing I would say as a mom, or parent, is if you are finding that you are dealing with lack of connection, lower mood, lower energy … while all the symptoms may be related to burnout, they could be related to depression or anxiety,” explains Rivendale. “My first line suggestion would be to bring it up with your primary care physician or OB/Gyn because they will be able to help you distinguish between those things.”

Engaging Your Circle

After you’ve been transparent with your partner and/or loved ones about being in the state of mommy burnout, allow them to support you – without guilt! One of the awesome things about parenthood is that you get to discover new networks of people who go through similar experiences who can offer sound parenting advice.

Enjoying THIS Life

It is an incredible job unlike any other to be able to raise human beings, nurturing them to be good people who one day will make positive contributions to the world. However, most importantly, moms are human. Every human being needs intervals of decompression, therapy and the opportunity to have fun! That should not get lost along the journey of motherhood.

“I really want to emphasize that seeking treatment or evaluation for what you feel is burnout should not be stigmatizing,” says Rivendale. “There is so much stigma around mental health — particularly for moms — that we kind of think anxiety is normal and we can’t really enjoy motherhood but it doesn’t have to be that way. If you feel that way, talk about it.”

To all moms: take your well deserved break! Utilize your network to step away for a moment and love on yourself. Book that spa appointment, buy that new dress, walk in the park with your friends, enjoy date night with your partner and be your own advocate when mommy burnout happens.

D. Rivendale, assistant professor of clinical psychiatry and neuroscience at the University of Cincinnati, encourages check-ins with loved ones to help navigate what you are feeling and receive the help you need from your support system.

“If you’re [fortunate] enough to have a partner I would say touch base with that partner daily, if not weekly, on what your needs are,” says Rivendale. “If you don’t have a partner and it’s within the realm of reason, talk with family members or friends. Have someone be available at least once a week to give you some time on your own to do what you need to do.”

Being vocal about mommy burnout and the internal challenges you’re experiencing enables you and your loved ones to be proactive in breaking down barriers that get in the way of your health and happiness. This also provides comfort in knowing you are not alone and that there are people who will come to your aid when times get tough. Having resources and an outlet as a parent is invaluable.

Whether you’re a single parent or one with a partner, there are local organizations that can help (see sidebar).

Bottomline, everyone needs someone. Moms need to be able to depend on others when life becomes challenging. It is the compassion of your family and friends that will see you through the stressful periods of life.

“Find two minutes of the day where you can be mindful in some way,” says Rivendale. “Literally to connect and ground to the present moment. I have some patients who love finding an affirming phrase that emphasizes what they want to be intentional about – getting away from a list mentality.”

Meditation is one of several ways to relax your mind, body and spirit, helping to put in perspective as a mom the things that are within your control and accepting those things that are not with a more peaceful heart. If meditation does not speak to you, find ways to release endorphins through exercise. Moving the body does wonders for brain health and overall mood. Motion positively impacts your
