MEMORABLE MOMENTS

greatparks.org/parksathome

S

ome of the best childhood memories I look back on are when I relentlessly searched for slimy nightcrawlers the night before my step dad would take us fishing; or when we packed a picnic lunch then headed out to the lake with turkey sandwiches and chips; or when we would go on Sunday drives

searching for a fishing spot. I remember that one time I cast the line into a bundle of bushes and somehow had that first big catch … my first catfish. It was a baby catfish, and you would have thought I found gold. Looking back, I remember it wasn’t just me who reeled that fish in, my step dad made that moment special for me — little did I know, he had been hanging onto the line the entire time waiting for the first bite. My memories consist of playing, familiar smells and using my imagination; learning small lessons from my parents and just having fun. What I don’t remember is being disappointed that we didn’t stay out longer, or the size of my fishing pole — only the little moments stuck with me. I had a Snoopy fishing pole, and I would walk around the yard pretending to catch fish with it. Everything else didn’t matter, just play. Don’t feel like you have to go all gung-ho on family walks, even if the kids are ready to turn back and go home; or stop at nothing to make that first fishing lesson “the perfect cast” — be realistic, and be flexible. Be ready for any given moment that your idea of what the day would look like

will change the moment the kids are tired or it rains. In reality, kids won’t carry good memories of their parents carrying a load of fishing equipment just to sit at the banks for hours until they get a bite; or that drug-out fishing lesson. They will remember how much they didn’t enjoy that, and they will remember the small things like the smell of the water, the butterflies and the silliness. If you anticipate that first catch with your kid and you don’t get a single bite, or you plan on a sunshine day and it pours, put your chin up and know you are creating this memorable moment for your kid, and you will find more enjoyment out of it, too. Everything else doesn’t matter. Kids find happiness in the smallest things that you may not know about until they are one day all grown up, walk up to you and say, “Mom, remember when …” I remember that night I caught my first nightcrawler - he pulled away but no way I was letting go. I had such a proud moment of accomplishment as I ran up to my step dad showing him all of the nightcrawlers I caught for our big fishing trip. The next day, I caught a tiny bluegill and the expression on my

stings & bites in

summer

TURN THE PAGE FOR FAMILY HEALTH

You’ve only been outside 10 minutes and your little one is eaten up by bugs! Here’s what you need to know.

A

typical summer’s evening: The kids are running around the yard, catching lightning bugs and rolling down grassy hills. They run in for a bath and bedtime and are covered in mosquito bites. Wait, are those mosquito bites? Maybe it was a tick. How do you really know? According to Nick DeBlasio, M.D., medical director at Pediatric Primary Care Center at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, distinguishing what’s what can be challenging. This goes for ticks as well — unless the tick is physically there, it’s very hard to tell. However, the treatment is about the same as long as your child is not allergic. Instead of worrying so much about bites on kids, jump right in and start tending to it. Of course, all kids react differently to bites. One kid can have a huge swelling from a mosquito bite or bee sting, whereas another child won’t have any reaction at all. “The main thing is good, symptomatic care,” says DeBlasio. “Really trying to control the symptoms, the itch, the swelling; to really just try and keep the kid as comfortable as he can be,” he adds. For babies and kids, the treatment is rather similar. For any bug bite, you apply a layer of topical hydrocortisone cream or offer Benadryl for as early as 6 months old to help with the itching. If there is pain and swelling, use ice, and if the affected area can be elevated, then do that, too. Give it a couple of days to heal, but if you notice

signs of infection coming on, take note. “Definitely check to make sure [bites] are not infected,” DeBlasio says. “Around day two or three is when they can become infected and more painful.” DeBlasio says infected bites are not that common, so simply monitor your child’s bites to make sure they aren’t over scratched, which can cause infection. If you have concerns, reach out to your pediatrician. PROTECTING BABY For babies younger than 2 months old, bug repellents are not recommended. Instead, dress babies in protective pants and long sleeves and avoid buggy outdoor exposure. For babies and kids older than 2 months, it’s safe to use repellents such as Deet (10 - 30 percent concentration; the higher the concentration, the longer it lasts), but spray it on the outside of their clothing rather than directly on the skin. As for little faces and hands, avoid spraying directly. Spray it on your hands first, then lightly apply to children. Plan accordingly for times when the kids will be outside for extended periods like a family hike, camping trip or just a simple walk around your neighborhood. In addition, avoid sunscreen and insect repellent combos — it’s best to apply each separately since they carry unique application procedures. KIDS VS. ADULTS You wonder, how did so-and-so get so many bites and I didn’t? DeBlasio says kids get eaten up more than adults just by virtue of being outside more.

cincinnatifamilymagazine.com

“Kids are running around, sometimes they don’t have shoes, oftentimes you have kids wearing bright colors, stuff like that,” he says. “Those are things that make kids a bit more vulnerable but they are not more sensitive to the bite,” he says. Of course, if your kid has a known allergen always keep an epipen on-hand. If he gets a sting, it’s time to use it. “That’s what they’re there for,” assures DeBlasio.

BITE PREVENTION AVOID STAGNANT WATER Mosquitoes love hanging out near water. AVOID FRAGRANCES Hair and body sprays and colognes should be avoided if you plan to be outdoors. COVER FOODS This keeps bugs from swarming around. WEAR CLOSED SHOES Cover little feet with socks and shoes. PATCH TORN SCREENS AT HOME Go through your home to temporarily patch torn screens until they can be mended. WEAR NEUTRAL COLORS Bees love bright colors and floral prints. Opt for light colors instead. PLAY OUTSIDE IN MORNING Bugs love hot temps, so let the kids play outside in the morning before temps heat up.

Toddler Parties Made Terrific

At Home parenting

BY NYKETA GAFFNEY

18 June 2020

“Where Every Family Matters.”

Understanding your little one’s needs and interests will help make his special day a blast.

I

t’s time to amp up your creativity skills and make your toddlers’ birthday work. To no surprise, it’s going to take a bit more than crafty fun and extra balloons — it’s hard enough social distancing with a 2 - 5 year old, now to throw a successful at-home birthday for him! It won’t be easy, but it is possible. If there’s ever been a time for thinking outside of the box, it is now. For toddlers, they desire two things: fun learning and staying busy.

GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT In my opinion, toddlers are the coolest part of the human population. They are in the intricate phase of soaking up information, grappling with fine motor skills, testing boundaries, becoming expressive and developing their personalities. The focus is primarily on keeping them safe as they begin to explore the world around them. Meanwhile, they are like free-spirited, fearless beings keeping moms and dads at the edge of their seats daily. It is important to remember that a toddler is experiencing just as much emotional development as they are cognitive growth. Take a deep breath before taking on any toddler related project — it is very likely that one minute he will appear delighted, and the next it may seem as if his entire world is crashing down. Mood swings are totally normal. According to Carolyn Brinkmann, director, Early Childhood and School Age Services, CoStars by The Children’s Home, there are many reasons why a toddler will “act out.” “Their ‘acting out’ behaviors could be related to them feeling confused or frustrated by a situation,” she explains. “They may also feel overstimulated, hungry, tired or sick. When young children experience these ‘big feelings’ they often do not have the language needed to express their worries or fears.” Be mindful of his reactions, and rather than getting frustrated or angry and take a step back and assess the environment or situation. And be aware of the sensory around him. “Children learn best and retain the most information when they engage their senses,” according to an article on EducationalPlayCare. com, a site that provides full and part-time child care and educational programs for ages 6 weeks - 12 years. Senses act in such a way that allow toddlers to investigate, learn and then become confident. The more confident a toddler is, the more mature he becomes in his actions. Knowing that toddlers have the quick ability for swift mood swings and that they require lots of attention and exploratory can help you as you plan a great toddler party. When you have a group of toddlers, anything can happen, including meltdowns. According to Brinkmann, the way you react can turn that emotional mood swing around. “Children under the age of 5 rely on trusted adults to co-regulate,” she explains. “Be present and close by, observe and respond with a calm tone of voice and be ready to offer choices when possible.” And now you’re ready to host a your toddler party!

AT-HOME TODDLER PARTY Note: Social distancing guidelines require that you keep your party to under 10 tots.

ACTIVITIES TREASURE HUNT: Designate a room in the house to hide “treasures,” like small toys, candy or anything ageappropriate and provide fun clues to “help” them find the treasure. The goal is to promote good self-esteem and keep the littles happy. MUSICAL CHAIRS: Music is great for toddlers’ sensory and will liven up the party. The number of chairs used is always one short of the total number of children participating and decreases as kids are bumped out of the game when the music stops. PAINTING: Remember to ask guests to bring an old shirt to wear over their outfit. Cover the floor with old sheets and dropcloths. Provide paper, paints and easy templates. BALLOON TOSS: An outside activity, kids love tossing jiggly balloons to each other. JELL-O MASH: Prepare a bowl of Jell-O for the number of guests, and have them place inanimate objects in their bowl. Ask kids what it feels like. Encourage them to compare how one object feels from another. Toddlers love to make a mess and use their hands. Let them indulge, and don’t forget to have them wash hands before and after each activity. PUPPET SHOW: It’s time to go old school - bring his imagination to life. Draw faces on brand-new pairs of socks, or, find affordable hand puppets online. Perform a show with Q&A, and allow him to touch the puppets at the conclusion of the show.

things to do

CELEBRATE YOUR

GRADUATE Got a graduate? During this unprecedented time in world history, he may not get to see caps flying or enjoy a brunch out with all the relatives, but he will sure see all of the effort you put in to praise and honor him.

DRESS UP YOUR FRONT DOOR Get more mileage out of that cap and gown by hanging it on your front door. Add streamers, balloons, twinkly lights and other décor. Consider your graduate’s specific interests, goals, dreams and favorite activities and search online for printouts, college mascots, pictures of friends and lots more. Enlist siblings to add details. If you have a front lawn, create a festive sign using poster board; write: “Honk For the Class of 2020,” or a message that applies to your own graduate. Decorate the mailbox

while you’re at it.

WISH LIST Be ready-set when someone asks, “What does he want for a graduation present?” If you haven’t already done so, sit down with your grad and compile a thoughtful list of gift suggestions. And, just to get ideas flowing, search “creative graduation gifts” online. For starters, you’ll find a number of gift boxes, such as the “I’m So Proud of You” box of goodies ($39 on Etsy). Perusing the items in these gift boxes may give you ideas for how someone could put together their own-made gift box ... tailored to your grad!

22

June 2020

I LOVE A PARADE! Who doesn’t love a parade? Send friends and loved ones an Evite to take part in a drive-by graduation parade! Choose a date and time for all these folks to drive by your house, honk and wave. Tie balloons outside, throw confetti, and spray some Silly String; blast the grad’s favorite music (and maybe some “Pomp and Circumstance”). Do what it takes to make it a huge to-do. And, before the parade passes by, be sure to have your grad’s cap and gown at the ready!

GREATEST HITS KARAOKE PARTY Round up your grad’s friends for a greatest hits’ singalong session. Send an Evite, utilize a video chat app (such as Teams, Zoom, FaceTime or Google Meet), and play some popular tunes. Go “vintage” with songs from the grad’s birth year. Invite parents and guardians to sing along, too. It might be a little embarrassing for the grads, but more than likely it’ll be a hoot. Then shift to modern music like Camila Cabello’s 2020 hit “My Oh My,” or “Intentions” by Justin Bieber, or sillier hits like “Baby Shark,” by Pinkfong.

“Where Every Family Matters.”

CELEBRATORY DINNER & DESSERT What celebration is complete without a delicious dinner and a scrumptious cake or other treats? Local restaurants offering both pickup and delivery services these days can assist you. Just to whet your appetite, we suggest The BonBonerie (2030 Madison Road, | bonbonerie.com). The BonBonerie provides delicious desserts, including special-interest cakes you can pre-order. Be sure to make it a dinner that features your grad’s favorite foods and cake, whether it’s coconut, or pineapple upside-down, or rich dark chocolate with peanut butter icing. And you won’t only be celebrating your young person. You will also be helping to support Cincinnati’s small businesses by placing a special order for your grad’s favorite meal and dessert!

FIND THOUSANDS OF IDEAS FOR HOME DECORATING WITH GRADUATION IN MIND ON PINTEREST.COM. JUST SEARCH “GRADUATION DECOR.”

GO VIRTUAL, TOO ORGANIZE A VIDEO PARTY Zoom is the app du jour, so arrange a Zoom call in honor of your child. Reach out to all of your contacts (whom you’ll invite beforehand) to ask them to think of something meaningful to say to your senior once you’re all on the Zoom. Do know that not EVERYONE knows how to use Zoom, so be prepared to teach a few stragglers the ropes. They will need to download Zoom before hand and be able to click on the invite link you for the exact time.

INVITE FRIENDS AND FAMILY TO MAKE A VIDEO Send a text asking everyone to send you a brief celebratory video (give them a deadline!) and then get a friend who knows how to edit all of the videos together. On a designated day, at a time of your choosing, gather your immediate family around (and of course, your grad) and show the video. There will be moments of joy and tears — especially if you’re able to get a few key videos from family far away. You can also create a group video using Tribute, which makes it easy to combine multiple videos into one.

ADOPT A SENIOR Make sure the grads in your neighborhood feel special. Choose a graduate to shower with appreciation, small gifts and honks.

ORGANIZE A VIRTUAL KUDOBOARD A Kudoboard lets you create an online group card filled with messages, GIFs, videos and photos. You can also create a shared virtual document using Trello; Google Drive; Slack; Zoho or something else.

ORGANIZE A PHOTO SHOOT Use your neighborhood Nextdoor App to organize a time when all of the seniors in the neighborhood come together for a sociallyresponsible photo shoot.

“Where Every Family Matters.”

M

emories with Dad searching for the perfect fishing hole, getting your very first fishing pole and

your first big catch. As kids, we remember these moments forever, and it’s the little things that stick with us. It’s not about the big boat; or stopping at nothing to bring home a bucket of fish; or spending time buying all of that highquality fishing equipment. Favorite memories derive from laughing, simplicity and just being together. So before you head out on your first fishing trip this summer, remember this, keep it simple. According to Neal Ramsey, guest experiences director - West at Great Parks of Hamilton County, the first experience means everything. “You need to make this a fun experience,” Ramsey says. “It’s got to be something they’re going to want to do again.” What you don’t want is to plan for a 4-hour day, and no matter if your kid is tired and ready to go home, you push to hit your fishing goal. If they are ready to leave, then call it a day. Afterall, it’s not all about catching a fish, it’s about spending time with your kids. Ramsey suggests letting your kids have a say in the day. If they get distracted and want to run around in the grass, let them. If they decide they want to skip rocks, great! “Kids will let you know when they are ready,” he laughs. They will have fonder memories of your time together. Their memories of the nifty fishing equipment and those long boating excursions with you juggling life vests and hawling bags and supplies? Not so good, and they may not be so excited about your next fishing trip

DOs and DON’Ts DO plan for a shorter day

Simplicity is key and you don’t want to drag out the day. “Set it up for a fun day,” Ramsey suggests. “If they don’t want to leave, bonus!” Set aside enough time for fun, but don’t expect it to go as planned.

DO pay attention to weather Is it cool and windy? Chance of rain? This

will make a huge difference, especially if you plan on casting your line from a boat. If it rains, don’t grab the umbrellas and head out anyway. There will be more sunny days.

DO go to “small” water

Especially if your kids are still little, according to Ramsey, smaller lakes and ponds make it easier to catch a fish. As they grow older, you can start experimenting with larger lakes and heading out on the boat.

DO choose live bait

Choosing a Fishing Spot We live in an area with an array of beautiful fishing spots that are a quick car ride away. Consider some of these fishing spots. Tip: call before you go and don’t be afraid to ask if the fish are biting or once you get there, ask where the best fishing spot is! MIAMI WHITEWATER FOREST 9001 Mt. Hope Road, Harrison, Oh greatparks.org/parks/miamiwhitewater-forest MITCHELL MEMORIAL FOREST 5401 Zion Road, Cleves, Oh; greatparks.org/parks/mitchellmemorial-forest

This is the easiest way to catch a fish if you’re a beginner. If it’s their first time fishing, use live bait such as mealworms or wax worms — everything that swims will eat it. Or even better, if you have a yard, have the kids search around for nightcrawlers the night before!

DON’T carry too much

FERNBANK PARK 50 Thornton Ave., Cincinnati, Oh; greatparks.org/parks/fernbank-park

Keep your equipment light. The last thing you want is to lug along loads of heavy equipment and use your time together getting it all setup. Your fishing rod, your kids new fishing pole, bait, snacks, sunscreen, water, hand sanitizer and towels. Done.

DON’T target a specific fish

This can be way too complicated, especially with younger kids. Whatever they catch, whether it be a giant catfish or little tiny bluegill, make a big deal of it!

DON’T stay in one spot

Move around and let your kids have a say on where they want to go next. Ask, “What looks good to you?” Ramsey says it’s all about their level of experience. If they are younger and you’re not getting a bite for the first 5 or 10 minutes, move on!

DON’T take anything for granted

Ramsey says safety first. Be mindful where you choose your fishing spot, watch the kids closely, and never let your kids bait a hook or handle fishing equipment by themselves unless they already know how. Guide them through it and assist them with their first cast. When they catch their first fish, Ramsey suggests “doing the dirty work for them” by taking the fish off the hook and then showing them their accomplishment.

ACTIVITIES

ONLINE EXCLUSIVES ON CINCINNATIFAMILYMAGAZINE.COM

• Spread sunshine! Print out a cheery sun coloring sheet and personalize it with fun designs, vibrant hues or encouraging words, then mail it to a loved one, such as a grandparent. A happy sun should help brighten someone’s day.

• Make a Rainbow After a storm comes a beautiful rainbow. Don’t toss away those broken crayons too quickly; they can be melted to help create a colorful work of art. Use tape to mask off a design or letters on a canvas. Peel all wrappers off the crayons and have a grown-up apply heat to the crayons using a blow dryer.

• June is the perfect month to visit a local farmer’s market to pick up fresh produce! Head to our site to find out who’s open, what’s in stock and also for delicious recipes for healthy, tasty treats. • Books Just Right for Summer. • Great ideas for Father’s Day (June 21) including how to do a Dad’s Day Photo Shoot; grillin’ ideas and subscription boxes for Dad. • Backyard Water Safety (even if area pools are closed, neighbors have pools and families need to remain diligent)/ • Water activities for kids in the backyard.

• Sunny Day Shadows Grab some chalk and head outside on a sunny day. Kids will love tracing shadow shapes as the day goes by; trace shapes of favorite toys, and also trace some family members who can move into different positions for this exercise. How do the shapes and sizes change from the morning, noon and evening? Part science and part art project, “sunny day shadows” can keep kids busy for hours.

NATIONAL ICE CREAM DAY is JUNE 7 But you can enjoy chocolate ice cream ANY day of the year! Still, in honor of the delicious chocolatey cold cream, we have delish dessert ideas for summer including Chocolate “Nice” Cream; Summery S’mores Chocolate Ice Cream Pie and more. Get the recipes at cincinnatifamilymagazine.com.
