Life With Baby

I

t was time for my postpartum visit. Already. How has it been six weeks? I proudly brought my newborn baby girl, Catherine, with me, excited to show her off. The lady at the front desk looked at her with an “Aw, she is adorable!” As I’m getting soft looks and sighs, all I could think about was, “Please don’t cry, please be calm for me during my appointment.” I walked in the doctor’s office, rocking Catherine back and forth in her car seat. She was doing OK, but ready to cry at any given moment and me forgetting that she is in fact a baby. Baby’s cry, that’s what they do, and if anyone knows that it’s a doctor. My doctor walked in and Catherine decided she would be calm for me the whole time. I relaxed as my doctor gave me the thumbs up to move on with some normalcy. He laughed and smiled as he gazed at this beautiful baby he delivered. He asked how I’m doing and honestly, it was hard to answer. I wanted to complain about how sleep-deprived I was and how hard everything was. But instead I replied with, “I’m doing good.” He said back, “Yea, that’s good. You know it’s tough but they say the hours are long and the years are short, right? It will go by fast so try and enjoy it.” This really hit me. I’ve heard, “Enjoy every moment,” but what he said meant so much more to me. He was right — thinking about how quickly my other kids have grown — it was a bittersweet thought. I made a mental note as I walked out of the office. Life with Baby is a huge adjustment, no matter how experienced you are. It’s been lovely escaping to “babyville” for these short six weeks — not having to worry about anything other than juggling life with three kids and surviving long nights and challenging mornings — but wow, has it been hard. Week one a slap in the face; week two, I thought I had it; week three, things began to calm down, and then there it was, another challenge. I forgot how long it took to “get it.” Meanwhile, I'm doing my best over here to enjoy every little moment, every “coo” and soft Baby touch and snuggle. It’s easier said than done, and all I can say is, you can only do your best. There will be days where you may question your parenting knowledge and find yourself Googling breastfeeding tips and YouTubing sponge bath videos, and then there may be days where you feel on top of the world, ready to tackle that first outing with Baby. Whether it's your first, second or third, having a baby is always a huge change, so give yourself that time AND grace while you ease into a new flow. You don't have to "get it" all right now, so take tasks as they come, and remember to take care of YOU, too during your new life. If you think your best friend is handling it all with flying colors, guess again and go check on her. Then ask her to go grab some coffee because more than likely, she's going through it, too. Yes, this time is sweet and goes by in a blink of an eye, but if you miss a "little moment," don't beat yourself up. You can't possibly do it all; remember it all. Take breaks, don't overbook yourself and always remember, your best is enough.

Teach Kids Bike Safety Bicycle sales have exploded since the pandemic hit, so be sure the kids are up to speed on what they need to know about safe riding. By Susan Day

M

any parents get very excited about giving their kids a first bicycle without giving a second thought to safety. But once you take the training wheels off of your child’s first bike, anything can go for a kid. Messaging from you to your child on bike riding safety can go in one ear and out the other, so it’s important to slowly but surely teach safety to your bike-riding kids and to do check-ins periodically to make sure that what you teach sticks. But where to start? First and foremost for kids on two wheels: helmets. For all of the statistics out there on head injuries and traumatic brain injury, if you pick up anything here, it’s that wearing a helmet dramatically reduces the incident of hospitalization after a fall or crash. Don’t take a cavalier attitude toward riding bikes without helmets, regardless of the fact that Ohio has no helmet law. Secondly, to teach your kids to ride safely on a bike, ride with them at first on your own bike. And know a couple of things about Ohio bicycle laws. Such as:

Q: Can My Child Ride a Bicycle in the Street? Yes. Ohio law does not include an age requirement for riding bikes on a roadway, however riders of all ages must follow the rules of the road. Make sure your child can ride safely and predictably by evaluating his abilities. Q: What road rules do kids have to follow when they are biking? One key Ohio bike law is that bicyclists must ride “as near to the right side of the roadway as practicable,” yet, a rider does not have to ride along the right side of a lane when it is unsafe to do so.

SAFETY TIPS FOR KIDS • Wear a helmet that fits properly. (Get a helmet fitting PDF at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website) • Adjust your child’s bike to fit his height and make sure the bike is safe to ride • See and be seen: wear bright clothing when you ride, watch for cars, etc. • Use verbal and non-verbal communication with motorists through eye contact and signals found at NHTSA. SKILL #3

RIDE A STRAIGHT LINE Take your child to a park, playground, or empty parking lot for practice and find a straight paint stripe on the pavement. Have your child practice riding on the stripe without veering to one side or another.

LOOK BACK WITHOUT SWERVING Have your child ride the same stripe while you hold a cardboard picture of a car. As he rides past, hold the “car”up or hide it behind your back and say, “LOOK!” Your child should look back and say “CAR!” or “NO CAR!”

STOPPING AND SPEED CONTROL While practicing, have your child slowly ride toward an item on the ground to stop just before hitting it. Gradually increase the speed and watch for skidding (not good). As your child speeds up, he will need to start using his brakes sooner.
