here’s plenty of fun and learning to be had in your own backyard this summer if you’re brave enough to go outside in the heat. Kids are. Put sunscreen on them first then let them go — here are fun ideas to share to get started:
Listen to a cricket symphony Catch a few crickets and place them in a screened container. Crickets make their music by rubbing comb-like structures (called “files”) against a rough surface on their front wings. The males chirp in the evening — I guess they’re whistling at the females!
Create a nature collage

Tell your kids to collect small, natural objects in the backyard or on a walk at your local park: Different grasses, sticks, pebbles, seeds, nuts, flower petals. Let the kids glue them onto cardboard in a collage. Add paint to make unique designs and bring the collage more dimension and color.

Fill a pan with cool water and take it outside. Let kids dip their feet in the water then walk on your sidewalk. Quickly trace the feet with chalk. Or, simply hose down your sidewalk and allow the kids to draw on it with chalk. Make a hopscotch court!
I Spy a Cloud ... Lie on a blanket on the grass on a pretty day (faces in the shade of a tree!) and study the clouds. What do they look like? Take turns guessing which cloud looks like ... oh, say ... a flying turtle or some such!
Trace shadows Place a tablet of paper on the ground under a small plant, flower or other item. Trace around the shadow on your paper. Repeat the process throughout the day to see how shadows move as the sun does.

My son absolutely loves his doctor and even calls him his friend. I truly agree. He talks to my son and asks him questions and listens and responds to my sons answers. He not only listens (not just pretends to) but he genuinely cares, not only about the child but the family as a whole. He goes over everything, head to toe, inside and out and takes the time to ask you questions about your child that have to do with every day life, not just his health. While I already knew there was not a better pediatrician anywhere, it was proven to me the day I took my son in on a Monday and he had been sick over the weekend. I mentioned having been a little worried about him and the doctor asked why I hadn’t called in to the after-hours line, and I said I didn’t want to bother them on a weekend over a minor fever etc. He said if I was worried about my son, he wasn’t doing his job. That has stuck with me ever since and I appreciated that more than he could ever know. Jeanette Ridener
Dr. Greenhill and staff are top notch! My kids love to go to the dentist and Dr. Greenhill’s office makes it fun while providing excellent care! Joy Suwinski

Bruce Allen, M.D. Hyde Park Medical Arts Building Dr. Allen went above and beyond duty when it came to the birth of my second child and my health afterward. I was very sick after giving birth and whenever I needed him, Dr. Allen was there. He didn’t stop looking for what was ailing me and even to this day, four years later, he still takes the best care of me and I can call him with any questions/concerns I have. ur nation’s big day is a great time to celebrate, but you can make it even more meaningful by joining a 5K run and walk in memory of 6-year-old Tony Merk, who lost his three-year battle with cancer last Independence Day. The event kicks off at the Colerain Township Government Complex (4200 Springdale Road) at 8:15 a.m. with a Flag Ceremony, followed by a chip-timed walk/run, with awards for top finishers. A free Superhero Sprint for little ones will follow, along with refreshments, a fun zone, and emceeing from Channel 5 Sportscaster George Vogel. Proceeds from the race will benefit the Pray Hope Believe Foundation, founded by Tony’s parents, and which raises funds for pediatric brain cancer research and support. Individuals and families can register online at prayhopebelieve.org.

Summertime is Here! Families should adopt water safety guidelines before heading to the pool, waterpark, or lake. Always maintain constant supervision with children around water. Teach your child to swim or enroll him/her in a class. Do not rely on air filled “swimming aids” as approved life vests. Tell your child to never dive into shallow water. Parents should learn how to perform basic lifesaving skills. Happy Swimming - and don’t forget the sunscreen! Home Solutions for Summer Bummers
R
ight along with long and lazy days come sunburns, bug bites, and itching and scratching. Hit the kitchen pantry for home remedies recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and everydayhealth. com to cure and fend off minor boo-boos — but be smart! If symptoms don’t improve, or seem to get worse, call your pediatrician.
OATMEAL An oatmeal bath can help soothe several ailments, including sunburn, rashes and bug bites. Grind a cup of regular or quick-cooking oatmeal until it’s pretty fine and then dump it into a bath of lukewarm water. Rinse off thoroughly and pat dry.
APPLE CIDER VINEGAR AND YOUR CREDIT CARD For a bee sting, use the edge of a credit card (or fingernail) to scrape out the stinger. Once that’s done, soak the area in apple cider vinegar to relieve swelling, or just apply an ice pack for about 20 minutes.
BAKING SODA
AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION
Did you know that baking soda has astringent qualities? Next time a bug takes a bite out of your crew, make a paste of baking soda and water and gently apply. Baking soda is also great for those suffering from a heat rash — just add a few tablespoons to the bath.
Take a few steps to prevent common summer ailments:
GINGER Enjoy a bit too much summer BBQ? Ginger, whether fresh or brewed into a tea, can help settle a tempestuous tummy.
HONEY Honey can act like an antibiotic cream if you don’t have any handy. Just dab on a bit of the sweet stuff and cover with a bandage.
MILK AND TEA When kids are itching from exposure to poison ivy, a compress soaked in cold milk rather than plain old water might be just the ticket. Or, try applying a moistened tea bag to itchy skin (use black or green tea). A green tea compress also works well for relieving sunburns.
• For heat rash, limit physical activity on super hot and humid days, wear loose cotton clothing, and stick to the shade. • Keep little ones’ fingernails short to prevent infection from scratching at bites and rashes. • If kids have been in the woods, check them for ticks. If you find one, remove it with tweezers but save it in a plastic sandwich bag. If a rash develops at the tick bite spot, your doctor can analyze that bad boy to see if it carries Lyme disease. • The AAP recommends avoiding insect repellents containing DEET on infants two months and younger, and using repellents sparingly on children over two months. Parents should steer clear of sunscreens that contain insect repellents, since sunscreen needs to be re-applied throughout the day, while insect repellents should only be applied once.

• Going camping? Add plenty of garlic to a meal you serve to your family prior to your trip — insects will be repelled by the odor in your sweat (unfortunately, your fellow campers might be as well)!
tips from local moms on our Facebook page
ALISSA DELUCIO says, “Run vinegar on poison ivy areas … cuts through the oil and helps dry it up. Vinegar is also great on sunburn … helps remove the heat factor. LYDIA BLAKE-REYNOLDS says, “Baking soda and water (enough to turn it into a paste) works really well on stings. Seems to take down swelling and calms the skin plus it’s supposed to draw the stinger out.” JULIA GINNOCCHIO LUNIEWSKI says, “I use Thieves Oil on poison ivy. I use a homemade blend of essential oils to deter bugs — they strongly dislike cedar, lavender and rosemary. I grow the fragrant herbs near all the doors into our home. I don’t have any tricks post-sting, but calendula helps with most skin problems, irritations and rashes. I make cherry pit packs for booboos. The cherry pits keep cold for three hours so it helps with swelling.”

a
young girl and her little brother ran past the fragrant trellis cascading with tiny, white, star-shaped flowers. “Look mommy! They’re here. They’re still here!” The mother lifted the kid-sized bikes from the curb at the edge of the butterfly park. “Yep. Right where we left them.” The comfortable feeling that it’s OK to leave bikes and belongings unattended, the relaxed pace of a small town, and the beauty of charming streetscapes in a fairy-tale setting make Rosemary Beach a perfect place for families. Established in 1995, Rosemary Beach is located on Florida’s panhandle and is about a 12-hour drive from Cincinnati, or a convenient flight through the two-year-old Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport located in Panama City Beach. Rental units include anything from hotel rooms, to condos that comfortably sleep six, to houses for extended family and friends. Beach-front and gulf-view places come at a premium price, but the community’s old world appeal assures beautiful views of flowers, trees, parks, and picturesque buildings no matter where you are in Rosemary Beach. And distance isn’t really a problem. Residents and visitors seldom need their cars in this small town. Most people bring bikes or rent them at the Bamboo Bicycle Company, that offers adult and kid-sized bikes, along with kid trailers and more. It’s also pleasant to walk through the area, enjoying the fitness trail that winds along boardwalks throughout the community, or strolling along the cobblestone streets, past shops, restaurants, fountains, and gardens on the way to the beach. And the beach is worth the walk or ride. Accessed with a passcode, the private beach is uncrowded. Chairs, sidetables and spacious umbrellas are available for a fee, but you’re welcome to bring your own, or to spread out blankets or towels. Adventurous souls can also rent catamarans, kayaks and surfboards, and even sign up for “Sea School” and learn to surf, sail, kayak and skim board. But I loved just relaxing on the sparkling white sand, and watching

the gulf’s waves roll, collapse on themselves, and spread their gentle fingers of white foam. I also took advantage of complimentary court time at the racquet club, and even signed up for a group tennis lesson. Since I hadn’t really played since my youngest child was born, I felt a little nervous, but it was a great experience. I joined three others for the lesson, and the pro, Mike, was able to pinpoint and improve each of our weaknesses, praise our strengths, and help us move at our own pace. The club features eight fast-dry, clay tennis courts and even offers a “match” making service. After tennis, I was ready for a dip in one of the resort’s four pools. I relaxed at “The Cabana Pool,” named for its cabana-style dressing rooms. It welcomes families with its separate children’s pool, and adjoining playground. There’s also the heated indoor/outdoor “Sky Pool,” with motorized panels that can open or close, depending on the weather; “The Barbados Pool,” designed in a French West Indies architectural style; and the “The Coquina Pool,” located beach-side, with a negative-edge. Tennis and swimming work up an appetite, and Rosemary Beach has plenty of restaurants. Choose from fine dining choices, like Edwards, to the relaxed, yet gourmet, Summer Kitchen, to the ultra-simple hot dog stands. You can also save money by stocking up at Publix, about a five-minute drive away. Many other attractions are also a short drive away, including bike trails, bays and beaches, and several parks. At Eden Gardens State Park, I toured the beautiful Wesley Mansion, a southern gem, reminiscent of “Gone With the Wind.” It showcases a collection of Louis XVI furniture that is the second largest in the United States. After the tour, I strolled through the meandering gardens, relaxed on a bench overlooking Tucker Bayou, and witnessed a wedding with the mansion, reflective pond, and fountain as a backdrop: the perfect ending to my vacation at Rosemary Beach, and its fairytale-like setting. J Barbara Littner David is a local writer and mother of five. She is also the author of Cincinnati Trips for Kids, a collection of more than 40 great Cincinnati-area attractions.

Ker-ching! If you wait until you can actually afford a baby you’ll never have one, so careful financial planning is in order ... Here’s what you should pay attention to: Health Insurance Your employer’s health insurance will be the most cost-effective option available to you for your baby’s pediatric care. Research the benefits covered in your plan, such as the delivery of the baby, hospital stay, doctor fees and well baby checkups, etc. After the baby is born, fill out the necessary papers to add your child to your group health plan. Most insurance plans require that you add your child to the plan within 30 days of birth.
There are so many things to tend to with a baby — feeding, sleeping ... oh, and all that stuff!
Pre-Baby Budget Beyond your rent or mortgage, car payment and utility bills, what do you spend on a weekly basis? Keep an expense journal for 30 days. You may have to eat at home more often to pay for all those diapers and tweak your budget to adjust for other needed items. Pre-Baby Expenses What do you REALLY need for your baby? Check on Craigslist or ebay for hardly used items (but be aware of recall items). Also, keep in mind that babies grow fast so don’t overspend on infant wear.
Protect my skin from the sun with a 50 or higher SPF sunscreen that’s labeled “Broad-Spectrum” and plop a hat on my head, too. Please don’t ever, ever leave me by myself in a car or in water.
Money Tip Think about it: If you can resist spending $25 a month and invest it instead, you’ll have $10,855 when the baby turns 18 (assuming a rate of 7 percent)!
Nest Egg
W
ith a baby on the way, everything will soon be more expensive than
you think, says Katina Z. Jones, author of The Everything Get Ready for Baby Book. So start creating a nest egg. With just $20 a paycheck, you’ll feel better knowing you have some type of cushion set up.

top 10 new parent issues CRYING
While hunger is the most obvious reason for a newborn’s cry, it’s not always the reason. Often infants just need to be held, or are uncomfortable in some way. Many techniques can help soothe a baby including singing, walking, cuddling or changing the environment. Discover the “5 S’s of Soothing” developed by Dr. Harvey Karp in his bestseller, The Happiest Baby on the Block, and search it on YouTube for valuable videos.
DEVELOPMENT
The Halo SleepSack In 1991, prior to the Back-to-Sleep Campaign that launched in 1992, William Schmid and his wife lost their firstborn to SIDS. Bill Schmid went on to develop the wearable sleep sack to encourage safer sleep for infants and to bring peace of mind to parents. The HALO SleepSack is now the number one choice of hospitals across the nation. Learn more and shop for one at halosleep.com.
At some point during your baby’s first three months, he”ll be able to raise his head, follow moving objects with his eyes, focus on faces, begin to notice his own hands, and even learn to give his first social smiles. Check out the American Academy of Pediatric’s (AAP) developmental milestones from birth to 3 months at healthychildren. org.
DIAPERING
The amount of wet diapers your newborn has depends on whether he’s formula or breastfed, but on average, newborns will have 8 to10 wet diapers per day. Baby’s stool will change significantly from the first meconium stools to a seedy yellowish stool for breastfed babies and greenish stools for formula-fed babies. Prevent diaper rash by keeping baby’s skin clean and dry and applying petroleum jelly after each change.

General Care
Only sponge bathe newborns until the umbilical cord falls off and (for circumcised boys) until the circumcision has healed. Keep the umbilical cord clean and dry and gently clean around the base area with rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab a few times a day. You’ll be given instructions for care following your baby’s birth. In general, for Baby’s good health, be sure that anyone who handles him washes his hands first.
GOOD PARENT?
According to William Sears, M.D., author of more than 30 parenting books and a leading proponent of the attachment parenting philosophy of parenting, the key attribute of a good parent is responsiveness. If you are responsive to your baby’s cues, even if you sometimes can’t figure out what he wants or needs, you’ll be a good enough parent, as long as you care and try.
SIDS
The incidence of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) has decreased more than 50 percent with the AAP’s “Back to Sleep” campaign. Always place Baby on his back to sleep, use a firm sleep surface, keep loose bedding and other soft objects such as stuffed animals and toys out of the crib and schedule and attend all well-child visits.
Sleep
Your baby will be examined in the hospital first then at the doctor’s office around two-four days old, then again at one-to-two weeks old, 1 month old, and 2 months old. Baby will be monitored for length, weight and head circumference on a growth chart and an immunization schedule will be established.
According to the AAP, the average newborn spends about 16 hours a day sleeping, but it varies by baby. Full feeding sessions help babies sleep longer. New parents are advised to follow an eat, wake, sleep pattern for their newborns. The first three months of a new baby’s life will cause sleep deprivation for new parents since newborns require around the clock feeding sessions.
EATING
Temperature
From birth, formula-fed babies will eat every three hours while breastfed babies will eat more often at every two-and-a-half hours. Breastmilk is easier for babies to digest, so their stomachs are ready for more sooner. Anticipate an average of eight-12 feeding sessions per day for newborns.
When you’re concerned that your baby feels feverish, the AAP advises obtaining a rectal temperature with a digital thermometer for accuracy. Other options are not as accurate and accuracy is important with infants. Call the doctor for a fever of 100.4 degrees or higher. (please turn the page)

the legacy of
parentless parents By Kara Benken Garrod
When you’re a parent, the loss of your father or mother while you’re raising young children can be devastating. Keep cherished family stories alive and find the extra support you need if your parents are no longer with you.
I
n desperation, I handed my keys to a “nice enough” looking stranger, accompanied by a brief explanation before I cut through traffic on foot. I could not believe I abandoned my car on the side of the road, but as I saw it, I had no choice. It was Memorial Day and a beautiful morning for a parade. As the daughter of a firefighter, I have always loved parades, but this particular morning my father lay dying in a private room at Hospice. The parade route blocked my access to him, so crossing through I barely noticed everyone’s smiling faces. I cannot recall ever feeling so hindered. I had been with Dad all night as he worsened and was transferred from my parents’ home to Hospice. By 5 a.m. I knew my infant would be waking soon and that I needed to go home. While the stress of the past month had dwindled my milk supply, both in terms of my output and freezer storage, I was determined to keep breastfeeding and wanted to be home when she woke. Struggling with the expectations of my role as a daughter, versus my role as a mother, when I left my dad in the wee hours I knew in my heart it could be the last time I ever saw him alive, though he barely knew it as my sister and I whispered our tearful good-byes to him.
In Grief, With Children Many months after Dad died — after the restless nights, the vivid dreams featuring him alive and smiling, and after beating myself up for not taking a more proactive role in battling his cancer — I could contemplate my loss and sometimes control my tears. But the day my daughter turned 3, and the moment my 1-year-old started pointing her index finger to meet a loved one’s — just like her big sister did with my (please turn the page)

the legacy of
parentless parents
Dad at that age — those were the times I was unable to move beyond missing him. My tears flowed freely, and my toddler asked if I was sad because I missed Granddad. What she doesn’t realize is that I miss him for her and for her sister. It is my children’s loss I mourn the most. I understand parents should predecease their children, but this knowledge does not make it any easier. If your parent dies while your own children are still young (or yet to be), the loss is multiplied; for then you are no longer “simply” suffering your own loss, you are mindfully mourning the loss of a grandparent for your children, as well. At 2-and-a-half and 6 months, my girls were too young to know him; they will not have memories of him, except for those I help create. I selfishly yearn for ten extra years so they could know him for all his faults, quirky jokes and honor.
A Changing Demographic The unfortunate truth is our children no longer have their lifetimes to establish a relationship with their grandparents. Many of us will parent our children without one, or both, of our own parents. Allison Gilbert explains in her book Parentless Parents: How the Loss of Our Mothers and Fathers Impacts the Way We Raise Our Children that while our life-expectancy is increasing, it is not keeping pace with the rising number of babies born to women age 35 and over. “For the first time in U.S. history, millions of children (and their parents) are actually vulnerable to having less time with their grandparents than more,” writes Gilbert. This is a true loss: not only in terms of trustworthy childcare for doubleincome families, but also in sharing knowledge, from family genealogy to skills like quilting, sailing or fishing. For those of us without a parent or parents, we must take on the responsibility of actively communicating aspects of that person’s life with our children. We begin by sharing photos and stories, but when our kids’ eyes gloss over, we need to take a new approach. “If you have some tangible things that were special to you from or because of your parents, sit with your child and tell them about it,” says “parentless parent” Hildi Cornwell, whose mother died when she was 14, and father when she was 26. “I told [my son] about my homemade pound puppies and we played with my purple pinewood derby car together a lot.” Gilbert also suggests taking “Grandparent Field Trips” to Grandpa’s workplace, or Grandma’s hometown, so your children can actually experience them. Or, layering photos so your children can see what physical attributes they take from their grandparents. Another suggestion is writing letters to your child from his grandparent. As Gilbert points out, no matter how many parenting books you read, they can’t supply the answers to a parent’s eternal question, “Was I like that?” We might take for granted the grandparent’s story beginning with, “When your Mom was your age …” but for parents without parents, these stories are gold. Gilbert suggests maintaining communication with your parents’ friends, neighbors, coworkers, and other family members — anyone who can relate stories to your kids, as your parents would have. Those stories are as much for you, as they are for your children. “I still desperately need to be parented, too,” says Jessica Minor, who was 21 when her mother died. “My mother would search my eyes and know just what to say to point me in the right direction. She had a gift for drawing out the best in people, and I feel like I need her more than ever at this stage in my life.” A mother to two young daughters, Minor adds, “I grieve daily that I am not able
20 July 2012
to navigate these early years of parenthood with her; all the ins and outs, ups and downs.”
Becoming Your Own Parent With your own parents gone, you can’t expect your spouse or your in-laws to take on the role of parenting you, because their roles are already defined. “I must do the things I think my parents would have urged me to do for myself,” writes Gilbert, citing working out, spending time with friends, or going for a walk. “No one is saying that my kids don’t need things and that my husband isn’t rightfully in need of whatever his needs are at that particular time. But my job alone — one no one else can take care of — is making sure that the voice that takes care of me, is equally loud.” Just as there is no time frame for grief, there is also no way to predict when it will strike the hardest. I knew all of “the firsts” would be difficult, but my mood would plummet when I could not predict a certain memory would surface. That’s when it’s most helpful to have a network of friends. If you prefer cyber support, you can join the Parentless Parents group on Facebook, which Gilbert helps moderate. Also, in response to her book, Gilbert has helped establish chapters of Parentless Parents support groups across the United States. If you’d like help organizing a chapter, you can email her at allison@allisongilbert.com. Parents don’t get bereavement time. But we do get a sisterhood: a beloved cousin who holds your screaming baby through the final salute at a funeral, or a new friend of your daughter’s, whose mother becomes one too, having recognized a common loss, or all the people who come out of the woodwork to tell you they are there for you. It is not just a saying; they are. When we are suffering, they are there to hold our hands, or our car keys, at precisely the right moment. And for that act of kindness, we appreciate them, always. Kara Benken Garrod is a local writer and mom of two.
Where Can I Find Help?
T
he death of a parent’s parent, whether unanticipated or long expected, elicits grief. Locally, people can find help through The Goldstein Family Hospice of Cincinnati and Fernside Grief Center (fernside.org). Though the administrative offices are housed in Blue Ash, support groups meet at five different locations throughout the city. All of Fernside’s services are free of charge. “It can be very helpful to share your experiences with your peers, and that’s true for both children and adults,” says Vicky Ott, executive director at Fernside. When explaining death to your children, Ott urges the use of specific language. Say things like, “the body stopped working and he died,” rather than, “they are sleeping and they won’t ever wake up,” which can yield sleep issues for young children. “To pretend it did not happen, or it is not going to happen, is not helpful,” Ott adds.
Visit cincinnatifamilymagazine.com or nkyfamily.com for tips on what you can do if a parent loses a parent.

Shalom Baby and Sensory Sunday: Two Great Resources for Families with New Babies in the Jewish Community “Whether it’s your first baby or your fourth, adding a brand new member to your family can be as stressful as it is joyful. That’s why Shalom Baby was born,” explains Nikki Sandor, Program Coordinator. “Our free Shalom Baby Starter Kits are packed with gifts and resources to help young Jewish families get connected to each other and the Jewish community with no strings attached!” Shalom Baby Starter Kits are available to families in the Greater Cincinnati Jewish community with babies 18 months and younger in which at least one parent is Jewish (mother or father). Funded by a generous grant from The Mayerson Foundation, these kits are sent right to the recipient’s front door three times throughout the year and contain gifts and goodies for parents and babies too, such as a “Tushy Towelettes To Go” container, a Baby’s First Jewish Holiday board book, a fork and spoon set, a hard bound copy of the popular book Jewish Family & Life, as well as a variety of other Jewish cultural and ritual items. The Shalom Baby Starter Kit Series is a program of Shalom Family, which also hosts some of the largest family events in the Jewish community, attracting hundreds of people each time. These events are always FREE and take place at some of the most popular family-friendly venues in town. In addition, Shalom Family offers Sensory Sunday playgroups twice a month at Gymboree in Mason for families with children 18 months and younger. To sign up for the free Shalom Baby Starter Kit Series and to learn more about Sensory Sunday and Shalom Family events, go to www.myshalomfamily.org. And, for families, in which one parent is Jewish and the other isn’t, or in which one or both parents have converted to Judaism, The Mayerson Foundation offers Fusion Family, and the New Traditions Gift program to help young families get connected to Jewish life and the Jewish community on their own terms. For more information about any of these programs, please call Julie Robenson at (513) 703-3343 or visit www.myshalomfamily.org or www.fusionnati.org.
